I had such a nice stay here, Marcus and his wife Fran were incredible hosts with wonderful recommendations for hiking, sight seeing, iglesias, restaurants, and more. They are locals to Castro and created a very welcoming, safe and fun environment at hostel ballena. Facilities were clean and I felt safe staying here as a solo female traveller.
I had an incredible stay at the Refugio Ballena Hostel. Marco and Fran are a lovely duo, full of energy and smiles, who are eager to share both their home and island. The second I arrived, I knew I wanted to stay longer than I had anticipated (and I’m so glad I did ;) ).
The hostel itself is very well thought out, is extremely clean, and always has warm natural light. The kitchen is beautiful and very spacious and my bed (dorm) was comfortable.
The walk from the bus station to the hostel is lovely, a straight walk through the center to the Río Gamboa and then a continuous view of the palafitos. I did this walk a total of 7 times during my stay at a variety of hours and can confirm it’s extremely safe.
When I arrived, the hosts showered me with tips on Castro and day trip suggestions to all parts of Chiloe. The two are extremely knowledgeable on the region and their suggestions were much better than those of the guidebook I had been traveling with.
Overall, I had an incredible stay here and would recommend to all. It was a truly perfect experience for me!

The room was cosy, the bed and bedding was really comfortable and warm, there was enough space for all my things, there was a desk at the window where I could do my writing, the bathrooms were large, spotless and had everything anyone would need (including a hairdryer), the kitchen was large, well-equipped and immaculate, the living room was cosy, comfortable and quiet. It is a great place to meet people because of the large kitchen table where guests gather. All in all the place exceeded my expectations and was in the perfect location for quiet and also for the local bus to the national park and a short walk into town (bus also an option if you don't like to walk like I do). The owners are amazing and helpful and friendly and kind. I would highly recommend staying here for a few nights at least so you can benefit from this wonderful space.
