I was hoping it is close to the city center. It's not for a family who has an aging relative and can't walk very far. It's in an industrial part of town and we had to take numerous taxis as a group of 6 we took 2 taxis as no vans available. The rooms are dated. No real breakfast except for muffins and yogurt. The plus side is it is a big room and fits 6 but beware when we were here the temperature was warm weather and the one wall air-conditioning took all night to cool down and they offer us only 1 fan. It's average. Not spectacular and not too too bad. If you're a good walker maybe the location works. Bit for us lazy bums the taxi fares add up and we could have saved our fares and booked a hotel closer. Hope this helps in your decision making choices.

The bedroom was really good, comfortable beds and the small kitchen had everything my family needed. Washroom had lots of towels (good for our big family). The parking structure is convenient. They offer a muffin and yogurt as breakfast. We stayed overnight in the hotel and I loved the blackout in the window, it helped everybody sleep until late.

Clean, very spacious rooms. Affordable rates. Staff were friendly and professional. Stayed here 3 days and loved its proximity to downtown shopping, sights and restaurants. Beautiful walking/cycling trails over and along the Gorge water way are just steps from the front door. Pet friendly. Only downside was I was working and didn’t have time to check out the pool! Restaurant was undergoing renovations at the time of my stay.

Service is reasonably quick and helpful. Parking is a bit of a free for all. Access in and out is limited from Gorge road during heavy traffic times. Rooms look dated. Carpet is old, towels are so-so, tvs are small, and views are okay at best. Not a bad place to stay, but far from a luxury resort.

BED BUGS! Don’t stay here! I checked in and sat on the bed. I noticed something on the pillow and looked, bed bug! Took a look at the other bed, another bug. I went down stairs and brought the bug in a bag. Thanks for offering me another room but, no thanks! So gross! I will never stay at another Howard Johnson again.

Our original plans fell through and we needed a hotel fast, the staff went above and beyond to accommodate our needs and book us a room. The location was prime and our room was clean as a whistle. Everyone we encountered was friendly and we had a blast, we would book here again in a heartbeat. I recommend this to others!

Clean with friendly check in. Plenty of parking in need of update but well taken care of. the guy who checked me in on Tuesday and out on Wednesday was an absolute delight, friendly, pleasant, engaging and quick to smile. Dealing with him made my stay better.

Not the poshest place in the city but also not the most expensive. Location is ok if u have transport but there's not much in walking distance. It's clean and cosy with discreet friendly helpful desk personnel. They try to accomodate any request so long as it doesn't slide too far into the ridiculous Quiet. Comfy beds. Lots of hot water. Helpful cleaning staff. No smoking which is fine by me. Even tho I smoke I don't like it when the room stinks of stale smoke. All in all it's a good bargain for a traveling single or business person. We're here for a long stay in a suite. It's an older, quaint little hotel but SO clean and comfy. The staff are lovely. The restaurant has closed down waiting for new management but lots of restaurants close by. The Victoria bus service is excellent and right outside your door. The Galloping Goose trail is across the street. We enjoy daily walks along the waterfront. Today we saw 2 seals. Love it here!

First things first: The room was quite clean, the beds were comfortable, and the view from our room was pretty nice. The kitchen suite was why we chose the hotel and it was equipped well enough to allow us to cook our suppers there. The price was very fair. Aside from that, the hotel and it's decor are quite dated. Our room had an incredibly strong smell of a deodorizing spray or air freshener. It seemed as though there are a large number of people whom live at this hotel (not a negative, just a comment). The pool area is nice enough, though spartan. The pool is allegedly 9' deep in the deep end, but I am not sure it was even 8'. Good size overall and nice to be able to play around in and throw a ball around. There is no hot tub, however both the men's and women's change rooms have dry saunas. The workout area has a treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical machine, and a TV to watch while you exercise.

My son and I stayed here and were pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness, helpfulness of staff and the fun pool, especially considering the price we got it for. We will definitely stay there again.

Toilet problem, shower curtain not working properly, staff trying to charge you the 250.00 deposit you have to leave to rent which is a ripped off. The cleaning lady are awesome. 2 stars is over rated but the cleaning lady make that happening.

Sure, the beds are a little small, but the pillows are just fine! And it was SO CLEAN. Everyone was absolutely awesome, from front desk to room attendants. Restaurant is closed now due to lack of business, but they do offer free coffee and muffins in the morning. We have stayed at a few hotels this year, and this was by far my favorite, and the cleanest. Pool, exercise room, sauna too! (Travelodge on our last trip was the worst, so was the Sandman! )

BED BUGS! We stayed here and the whole hotel is infested with the bed bugs. Upon my complaint the night staff let it slip that "we keep spraying, but they keep coming back! " Night staff did not have any suggestions of how to deal with the problem, other than moving me to another room. Still had to pay for the night and inconvenience. I took a picture on my cell phone to confirm the bugs, and showed it to staff. Upon inspection of the mattress, I discovered that this hotel does not use bed bug covers as a preventative measure.

Reasonable price. Good service. Had stayed here during the Thanksgiving weekend for a night. Rooms are okayish and maintained quite well. The only problem is that the rooms don't have enough charging points. The charging points available are under TV stands or desks and are very inconvenient to reach. Bedside charging ports would have been quite helpful.

We had a room on the ground floor. The room was clean. There was an iron but no ironing board. The outdoor patio area left much to be desired.

I will say this that it has a pretty good location as far as the city goes. But in the room I noticed that there was blood on the bathroom shower curtain, and on the floor. When they came in to clean up the room the bed was not made and the towels where not replaced just refolded. So over all I would not stay here again. It will not let me post anything without giving a star, that is the only reason why I gave 1star.

Beds where small… my feet hung off the end, the bathroom shower curtain was broken, was told breakfast to be included only to find out it wasn't, hallways smelt like strong disinfectant. I will not recommend or stay at this hotel again. Customer service was polite but unapologetic.

The room was clean and air conditioned. There was a coffee maker in the room and the complimentary muffin and yogurt were appreciated. However, I have a couple of observations. 1) A damage deposit was automatically charged to my credit card with the comment that it would be refunded in 24 — 48 hours if there was not any damage to the room. That was not indicated on their website or Trip Adviser. What assurance do I have that hotel management would not 'claim' that there was damage to the room so that they would not have to credit back my deposit? I do not appreciate the assumption of guilt on the part of the Howard Johnson organization. 2) It would have been nice if there were a stopper in the sink or if the bathtub stopper worked. Also, for the amount I paid for the room, one would hope to have glass glasses and coffee cups, not plastic or paper! Overall, a low passing grade.

I really enjoyed staying at the Howard Johnson for a few months this winter. While its not perfect they try hard to keep the surroundings looking nice. They even renovated a few rooms while I was there. I had a north facing room and really enjoyed the peace and quiet.

One of the best value hotels I've ever stayed at. 9ft deep pool, 2 saunas, weight room. Huge selection of great rooms; under $100, home offices, mini apartments, suites etc. Staff is always available and helpful, sometimes too much so! Only downside is very steep parking lot, can be a bit of a climb from front office to your room. But location is prime and it's a small price to pay for being right next to downtown Victoria.

The third bed is a sofa bed not very comfortable while the first two are normal, the room is still spacious.

Overpriced, decor hasn't been changed since the 80's, peeling paint in the bathroom, breakfast is only muffins and yogurt, powerful smell of cheap air freshener that blasts your senses when you walk in the room, obvious bad patch job of a hole in the wall. The ceiling is visibly covered in grime, there are no screens on the windows so bugs have free reign if you want fresh air. Don't come here. Just awful.

I don't recommend. Loud music until 2am from the bar so if you're looking to sleep it's a no go. Poor service at the desk. I will say the maid service isn't bad so everything is at least clean.

In the pictures it looks so nice, in person it was gross rooms were small and washroom was also very tiny. Dirty floor and smells disgusting. Would not recommend this to anyone. Windows are close to ground level and had no screens. The receptionist Calles at 12am to ask for the payment. AC doesn't give out cold air. Everything is very filthy and dusty. Walls and curtains are disgusting. Only one of the key cards works. Worst hotel experience ever. Never stay here!

"HO-JO" Needs total re-vamp! Seriously, "Whoa-Jo! " Absolutely awful! No refrigerator. No Microwave. Much of room had broken items. Shower & shower floor dirty upon first entry. Bed broken; had to switch beds in middle of the night. Bugs; spiders and ants. A lot of noise from transients, prostitutes and druggies in motel parking lot. Had no idea when I booked this room from Vancouver, that this hotel was in such bad shape. Took pictures to prove story. So bad, that in the morning, I insisted on a reduction in overnight rate from CAN$99 + Tax to USD $44 total.

Nice hotel for a stay over or if your looking for a couple of days and want a full kitchen to cook food yourself would recommend. Also has a pool and a restaurant and bar downtown stairs so entertainment isn't far away.

Looks nice on the outside was drawn in because it was a good price had pool and was pet friendly. Our room was small and the beds were hard. When we went to the pool it looked nice but after a while vision started to get cloudy when we got out of the pool I experienced a burning feeling in my eyes that really hurt and lasted for a long period of time (3-4 hours) do not recommend unless you like burning eyes.

Great staff. Nice beds. Big rooms. Nice location with easy access to Victoria locations.

We were there for 2 nights for a business trip end of Dec 2015 and had to take some printouts and the front desk staff was very easy to deal with and helped to get us the printouts every time. Did not experience their bar & restaurant yet. Planning to stay there on the next trip and hopefully will experience more services.

Super friendly staff… yes a little dated but comfortable and warm.

I'm happy with my stay at the Howard Johnson at Gorge Road. Was staying for a week so it was great to have a small kitchen and a bedroom that was separate. The Staffs were super friendly, bed was comfy, room was clean, and there was free parking and internet Wi-Fi. The only nitpick would be that the hotel is not exactly new. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend for the price.

The receptionist staffs were really friendly! I was offered room service without requesting for it. The hotel was also pretty affordable compared to the rest in Victoria, albeit kind of aged.

Staff are friendly and efficient. Pool looks nice. My room was spacious and very clean. The walls are a bit thin so you might hear your neighbours at night if they're loud. Also it's a pretty far from downtown if you don't have a car, but I had a very pleasant stay.

The night clerk Joanna was a great help when my door key would not work properly and she assisted with getting a taxi the following morning. Very custom service attitude. Thank you Joanna.

We took a room here for one night, since all the other places around were booked out. Good things first, the staff at the front desk was really friendly and helpful. And it is a only a 5min drive from Victoria downtown. The room however was dark and moldy, my mattress had a big strain on it. It was OK for a night but we would probably have stayed somewhere else if we could.

For the hotels in this price range around this area, I like this hotel the most. Stable internet, pool, clean, and lots of parking.

Registered here last October, 2012, playing in a pro tennis tourney up there. Needed QUIET, and a simple, clean place to crash. This was both. Don't know where the negs' come from, but I have nothing but good to say. In fact, I'm coming back up for the tourney now in 2013, and re-booking.

Don't get trapped by this place, seems like an ok hotel at the front desk but once you get to the rooms it's quite obvious that you've made a terrible decision, hard as rock beds, the whole place smells, showers are moldy, afraid to touch anything because of what might be on it, and the water even smells terrible so you can't clean anything, Oh and the pool! It kinda seems like you might get murdered if you go down there or at least it looks like something out of a horror movie and I doubt you'd wanna go in it after seeing the rest of the building.

I dont know where all these good reviews are coming from. We wish we had done more research before booking a room. Everything is extremely dated and even sitting on the bed is uncomfortable. Would not recommend.

Service was great, I had a few requests that I needed to talk to the front desk about and they took good care of me and my family with a smile on their faces. The cleanliness of the rooms could be better. The bathroom problem someone else reported regarding the mildew is still an issue in our room. In our suite, we had a kitchenette. The caulking around the sink looked like someone had a little too much coffee (very shaky! ) From an environmental standpoint, I was impressed to see LED light bulbs everywhere; that must have cost a fortune! I was lucky enough to have a view over the Galloping Goose Trail park; quiet and very nice to look at (ask for this, the other side is a parking lot with a noisy fan on the neighbouring building. Overall, they need some tweeks in the plumbing/bathroom cleaning and maintenance department, good for the money.

The hotel staffs were super nice and attentive! Their service made all the difference during my stay. There is even a indoor swimming pool here, and that was pretty cool. The prices here were also decent for the money. My only gripe was that the hotel could use a few more staffs, and maybe an update to the decors. Would definitely visit this hotel again.
