My colleague and I have stayed at the Best Western Tin Wis several times since December 2012 for work. It is built on an absolutely stunning piece of property overlooking the water with views that truly take your breath away. During our stays, though, numerous issues began to emerge. For example, my credit card was charged a cancellation fee for dates I was never scheduled to stay, the rates that we were charged differed from week to week, my colleague and I were charged different rates for the exact same room, and we often did not get the rooms requested at the time of reservation. Granted, all of these issues were relatively minor, and were addressed once they were brought to the attention of the staff, but are still somewhat unexpected when staying at a professionally run resort. Further to this, there seemed to be an undercurrent of unrest among the staff members, where some staff members belittled some of their co-workers in front of us for the mistakes that were being made. As well, while most staff members were extremely friendly and accommodating, there were a couple who could be downright rude at times; these individuals seemed to follow the philosophy that “the customer is always wrong. ” And finally, the fitness room was constantly under-repair while we stayed, with staff being unable to tell us from week to week (when we called in preparation for our visits) whether we could expect it to be open. Because our experience at the Tin Wis was more positive than negative and because the location was so beautiful we just brushed these occurrences off, although we were getting to the point of asking jokingly prior to our arrival: What will happen at the Tin Wis on this visit? The tipping point for me occurred when there was a miscommunication over how many copies I wanted made of a document. The person helping me (one of the individuals I alluded to above) thought I wanted more copies than was actually the case. Fortunately, we realized the miscommunication before too many copies were made. But because the material was sensitive, and some of it copy-written, I asked to keep the extra copies so I could shred them myself. She then proceeded to try to charge me for the extra copies, rudely saying that if I wouldn’t let her shred them, then she would have to charge me. It was at this point that I asked to speak with the manager-Paul Dodds. Paul was extremely apologetic over the incident and removed the additional charges from my account. As well, he covered our wine with dinner that evening. However, one thing he couldn’t guarantee is that we would not encounter such rudeness and unprofessionalism in the future from this employee, and I got the impression that his hands were tied in this respect. For this reason, following a very awkward check out with this individual where no apology was offered, my colleague and I have cancelled our remaining reservations and made alternative arrangements. I also informed my contract manager of the difficulties so that she might inform others interested in staying at the Tin Wis.
