The mornings were very noisy, and the shower water came out brown. The room — especially the bathroom — felt extremely old and poorly maintained. My first impression was the bathroom, which didn’t look properly cleaned; it seemed worn out, and I even noticed dirty water residue in the bathtub. The worst part was being woken up at 7 a. M. By construction noise. The heater also couldn’t properly warm the room if you kept the curtains open to enjoy the view. I understand the hotel is undergoing renovations, but either the rooms should be quiet in the morning or they shouldn’t accommodate guests during construction.
This place needs major change. It's got so much potential, but for the price vs experience? It's not worth it. The place has an "old" charm too it, but it also comes with the "neglected" feel. The pool area is nice, but old and kind of gross upon close inspection. The food is like eating at a truck stop diner, but worse. For everything it could be, it just lacks. And I get it, it's not an easy building to repair, I'm sure it would be a crazy major cost to bring back to life, but it's just a shame they let it get to that it is now. For instance, the food and eating experience, it should be top notch, they even have an old restaurant on the ground level, there could be patio space on the Spadina side. I spend thousands a year on Marriot brand hotels, I would rather stay at the airport location for half the price. The Bess is just not worth it.

I chose this hotel for a two-night stay based on good reviews, its central location, castle-like architecture, and river views. While the building looks impressive, the stay itself was extremely disappointing.
The room lacked basic amenities. There was no proper air conditioning or ventilation, no bathroom fan, and a broken window that had to be propped open. After showering, the bathroom remained damp and smelled humid for days. A standing fan was provided, but the thermostat only blew hot air, making the room uncomfortably warm.
When I reported this, the front desk simply acknowledged that renovations were needed and took no action. At nearly $300 per night, this hotel offered very poor value. I expected an upscale experience, but a budget hotel would have been far more comfortable.
