Villa Tugendhat is a modernist architectural masterpiece located in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. Designed by the famous German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the villa was built between 1928 and 1930 for the wealthy Jewish family of Fritz and Grete Tugendhat.
The villa is a three-story building with a flat roof and a façade made of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Despite its architectural significance, Villa Tugendhat has had a tumultuous history. The Tugendhat family was forced to flee the country during World War II, and the villa was subsequently used as a dance school, a rehabilitation center, and a hospital. In the 1980s, the villa was declared a national monument and underwent a major restoration, which was completed in 2012. Today, the villa is open to the public and is a popular destination for architecture enthusiasts from around the world.
