Lovely hotel, read a lot of poor reviews which are undeserving. Staff were incredibly helpful and very friendly (we were stressed with two, tired and hungry young children) they couldn’t have been more understanding or helpful.
Disappointed that we weren’t told at the point of booking that the pool wasn’t open; but that’s fine.
We are staying in one of the suites which is perfect for children to run around. Only basic bathroom products are provided (just soap) so remember to bring your own shampoo etc.
Yes part of the decor is dated but it’s nearly 200 years old so it’s to be expected and I think it adds a little bit of charm to the place.
Definitely recommend, great value for money and we will revisit.

Arriving in this brilliant hotel check in was easy and fast! Staff were lovely.
On getting key I went to room and discovered I had been booked In a lovely suite as visiting for my Birthday The room was gorgeous lovely furniture lovely views.
The bed was super comfy Could not fault the room or my stay Thanks again love the royal x.

Booked for one night and I was a bit apprehensive after reading reviews but no worries we paid £59 for a double room with sea view and breakfasts and it was excellent. It’s an old building with loads of original features and rooms are warm and well appointed would definitely stay here again.

Lovely staff, right on sea front, its a little old fashioned but was still lovely to stay in.

Incredibly slow service at the bar on the evening. At breakfast in the morning all the plates were freezing cold, goodness knows where they had been stored but they were freezing.
They ran out of bread and one of the staff had to nip out to get some more! She didn’t return while we were there but it was 09.15 on a Sunday so guessing she was waiting for a shop to open!
There was no coffee, they kept running out of hot water for the tea. It was just unorganised and pathetically poor in the dining room. The hotel must be a hundred years old so you would think they would have had it sorted by now.

Expensive. Breakfast was an absolute shambles. Ran out of eggs then got eggs then ran out of plates. Ran out of bread for toast. Teabags were absolutely tasteless. Would have expected a better room for what we paid.

We had a lovely large sitting room with sea view, bedroom and bathroom. We had such a relaxing 3 night stop. They are busy renovating, so I think when they have finished would definitely stay again.

This is a beautiful building that sadly has been left to neglect no money invested in the structure. Poor staff training although staff were friendly not very knowledgeable limited in help that could be given. Our room faced the fire escape the windows were sash and painted so badly that they couldn’t shut. Resulting in sleepless nights as the seagulls were nesting and mating all day and all night. The rooms were poor decor the maintenance work is ongoing and very make do. Britannia seriously need to invest some money into this hotel. We did complain and we were moved sadly our bags were not. We were upgraded to a suite which was bigger not any grander. The cleanliness of the rooms is disgusting. We found our bathroom floor in the suite with pubic hair trimmings dust and mould around the bath. Polish which had been smeared and not cleaned off the mirrors there is nobody who checks up on cleaning or maintenance of rooms before a booked guest goes into the room. First room we were given had no tap in the bathroom sink it had not been connected. We had a lovely stay as Scarborough is a gem we really had a great time at the spa too thoroughly recommend a show or the orchestra in the mornings very lovely. Just a shame Britannia haven’t provided the service, quality of hotel and have no money to pull this hotel upto the standard it should be the location is and the main entrance is really all it has going for it.

Very friendly and helpful staff, lovely warm spacious and very comfortable rooms very clean and smart. Highly recommended.

The staff need supervisor the rooms need a good clean dirty sink and bath.
Only two bulbs in chandelier instead of eight one of those was flickering.
The food was all dried up I couldn't eat it.
Only one bar staff for the whole hotel dirty glasses had to be changed.
TThe only clean nice place was the ladies toilets on the first floor.
We had two evening meals the second day was left overs from the day before discusting.

Had a fabulous time at The Royal Hotel.
Unfortunately some of the guests spoilt the atmosphere, the older generation were definitely grumpy and had attitude.
The hotel is obviously being revamped and being restored to its former glory.
Rome wasn’t built in a day and residents need to be patient.
The reception, dinning and housekeeping staff were all very friendly.

Made us feel really welcome. Great location looking down at the bay and our room was amazing (Room 110 — the Churchill Suite).

I can honestly say with hand on heart this was the worst experience I have ever had in Scarborough. We arrived at the hotel 3hr after checking in time, they couldn’t find the room key and when it was eventually found one of the staff had to check the room to see if it was ready.
We were then sent away from the reception with a hand wave telling us what direction to head for, we eventually went back to the reception after 30mins asking if someone could please take us to the room…
We had booked. Standard double but we got a room underground with no windows,, we would have never booked this room but then was told they no alternative,, the staff where less than helpful n apologetic and when I was asked by a elderly on her 80th birthday if I could complain on her behalf as she had paid over £1000 for a week to celebrate her birthday and was in tears explaining how badly she had been treated by the staff… I can honestly say stay away from this place all they want is your money with nothing in return not even a smile … out of ten I would rate minus 100

Room gorgeous however toilet broken had maintenance up twice still constantly flushed all night and didn't flush when needed too. Not nice.

Stayed in the sit well suite absolutely amazing, stayed 4 times in different rooms all amazing.

We arrived on Friday and asked if there were any single rooms for one night. The receptionist was great and got us a double room each. Helpful and friendly staff … Iove the Royal.

Bad experience. My purse was stolen from my room and I have not been dealt with the way I should have been. Would not recommend.

Great location and the hotel has a great atmosphere. Used the swimming pool and steam room. Very enjoyable but pool is small so don't go expecting to swim around if more than half a dozen people in. We thought it was a bit of a cheek to have be charged to use the pool when we had already paid to stay. Had a room with a sea view which was a good size with en suite bathroom with shower. The windows really did spoil the sea view though as they were filthy and that's being kind. Bed was large and comfortable. Bed was re made by staff in the morning and room tidied which we though was very good as we were only on a 2 night weekend break. If you go for breakfast avoid going at 9am it is chaotic we saw 3 members of staff get totally overwhelmed by the influx of people at this time. The breakfast choice was good, cooked well and set us up for the day. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay. The staff were very good as was the hotel and facilities.

Loved this hotels character, it is a little run down in parts but work is being done to bring it back to its glory. All staff during our stay went above and beyond to make our stay pleasurable. I personally thought the food was excellent, bar prices were very reasonable and a wide choice of alcohol was available great view from our window on top floor over looking sea. Close to seafront either a nice stroll down a path surrounded by gardens or a trip down a Victorian tramway. A lot of the guests were elderly so don't expect a young trendy vibe. All in all a very pleasing experience.

Really nice place, looks amazing inside when you first enter the hotel. Clean rooms, huge bed, ensure bathroom is a good size. We will be coming back here.

On the positive side, it was easy to find in a good location and had good views. However, the staff seemed disinterested. The room had a good sized comfortable bed but unfortunately the room was dirty, tired and to top it all off the bathroom door would not close at all. There was a missing lightbulb and damage evident throughout the room. Downstairs in the bar, an armchair with a broken arm nearly resulted in a spilt drink and a fall. Not what I would expect from a hotel with premium prices.

Enjoyed my stay despite falling into the underworld through a portal which opened unexpectedly in the hotel's magnificent staircase. Here the King of the Goblins (Scarborough section) presented me with several challenges, such as getting my room key from the belly of a giant toad using only the hotel's cutlery. Disgusting but managed it eventually. Comfortable room and nice breakfast.

Staff need a lot of training in the dining room as they don't know how to speak to customers and they don't have communication skills. The Hotel is falling apart needs a lot of work to bring it back to its wonderful status. The Hotel caters more for the elderly bus trips and taking advantage of them thinking they don't require the same standard as other younger customers. … The Dining Hall needs to move with the times its run down the cutlery is old the plates are dangerously to hot when picking them up the juice glass are out of date and very tiered the cups and saucers are no better no tea pots or coffee pots. The food is not up to standard when handling the utensils to pick up your food they are to hot to handle. The jams are in big jars and the spoons fall into them then you have to fish them out and they would be all stuck up with the jams they should be all individual small jars as you don't want other people touching the jar or spoons not hygienic after all the hotel customers have touched them. The rooms are falling apart wardrobes the backing was not stuck to the structure you could see all the nails on the backing. The curtains needed tie backs the lace in the windows need replacing the bathroom towel rail cheep cannot support the towel the toilet needs to be secured better as it moves when sitting on it the bed quilt cushions all need replacing old and worn.

A wonderful hotel. We liked the fact that you can put what food to put on your plate. The only think we were unhappy with was the price of wine. For example one large glass of wine was as much as a good bottle of wine from any outside store. Apart from that we had a great time staying at the Royal.

Bit tired but once a very grand place that has kept some magnificent features. Food was passable but should have been more in keeping with the luxurious setting it once was. Evening entertainment aims to please more mature clientele. Managed to get a good value deal though so would go back.

Beautiful staircase. A bit shabby, carpets could do with a good deep clean or replacing. Smells badly towards the back function room. Overall it needs a good clean.

Good quality hotel in centre of Scarborough. 3 minutes from tram/elevator down to the south beach. Elevator has been operating since the 1800s so I guess it's a well tried and tested method of transport. Alternatively, Hotel is only 3 mins from the meandering steps down to the beach. If you decide on the steps walk down, then do save some energy for the return walk back up, it's a mission but we'll worth it. It's a nice hotel with lesuire facilities and evening entertainment on site. Only criticism I can mention is that I don't believe that the hotel patio and tables view, showing the view down to the sea, is a mystery, as its definitely not a view from this hotel!

Lovely location. Rooms are light and airy, bathrooms very nice and modern. Could do with some refurbishment as it does look dated. Not keen on the food. Hotel staff wonderful. Beds are back breaking … Refused to serve me a pint of blackcurrant and soda!

Very disappointing and won't be going back what a waste of money. Very misleading photos and information on the site. Stained furniture. Didn't feel safe. No organisation. Conflicting information displayed in the hotel to what the staff said. Rude staff just walking straight into our room with no notice, no knocking nothing. Massive invasion of privacy. Unfair charges to use the pool even though we had paid enough to stay. Mucky ceilings and surroundings. No heating in our room so had 3 plug in heaters just shoved in various spaces in the room. And key card saying room with sea view, next joke! Huge tree in the way we looked out to see a rusty staircase outside not quite a sea view! Best part about this hotel… Leaving! Will not be going back.

Looks a bit worn from the outside. But well looked after inside with good decor and a fantastic staircase. Dinner and breakfast were both good. Parking is the only problem as they don't have a car park. But if you park in the local NCP (about 10 mins walk) you get a 30% discount and it costs about £7 per day. Hotel is well positioned for shopping and sight seeing.

I thought the hotel was looking tired even though the decor was good it seemed dated. We had a superior double room with a sea view which was splendid and to be fair made the weekend worth while. Not great if you want complete quiet as we could hear a lot of noise from wedding function that was also there. Service was ok but not great. On our arrival there was a large queue to check in with only one receptionist. Staff were friendly but not very warm. Just average. No parking facilities just an n c p car park about half a mile from the hotel. We didn't have an evening meal just breakfast which to be honest for the type of hotel it is thought was substandard. The bread wasn't covered and was quite hard before toasting. Coffee was weak. Sausages were cheap brand and scrambled eggs were watery. Bacon was fatty and pastries were dry.

Used to stay here in the 80s and was a great hotel, looks a bit grubby on the outside now. Dirty windows etc, I really wanted to stay here on my recent visit but some of the reviews put me off. I opted for Premier Inn, 1 minute walk away.

Variable quality rooms. Some are great and offer a great sea view while others are… not so much.

Food is very poor cold and just cheap products used. The bar staff are sluggish polite but very slow no get up and go. The room is very small cob webs from lights and smoke alarm. Some of the waiting staff polite some very up there own. The only thing I like about this is the view of my lady opposite me on my table. Very abrupt order a pint have to pay there and then no tab no waiting till after meal. Sent main meal back as undercooked and like said before cheap produce. Would give half a star if I could. Come on guys sort it out asap.

Once elegant and still showing many features of a bygone day but now rather tired. No parking at the hotel. There are ramps inside the building but I can't recall seeing any obvious wheelchair access from the street. Food alright but nothing to shout about. Disappointing that the salmon caesar salad was made with tinned pink salmon.

We have stayed at the Royal hotel in scarborough many times and in most of there beautiful rooms over the years. Staff are always very attentive and friendly. Some of the reviews I've seen are totally untrue. Fantastic place and home from home.

Had a brilliant 2 night stay here food is really nice the room was clean and tidy and we had a sea view. Close to town centre and beach. Would come back again better than the Grand.

This is an old style hotel with colonial style features, remarkably in reasonably good condition, as these hotels Can cost a fortune to keep up with. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was good rather than outstanding. Our room was spacious, clean and warm enough for a February evening.

We were disappointed with the experience. They sat us on the stage with all the speakers and dirty windows, dirty carpet and curtains coming off their rails, stained tablecloth. The coffee was cold and stewed. The scones were microwaved. All the cakes were old, the cream had a crust on it. Sandwiches were fresh but uninspired. Hotel is very dated and tired. Staff were nonexistent.

Wonderful overnight stay! Room was delightful and staff were very pleasant. Breakfast buffet was great! Would go back again.

A majestic Hotel indeed folks, visually stunning on first impressions, I had a double room with a sea view, and it was very nice indeed, the hotel staff are very helpful, and will attain to your needs without hesitation. Yes there's a few places that need a lick of paint etc, but this did not deter me in the slightest as I love Victorian architecture, of course it's an old building you have to expect a few nicks here and there, but if anythings bothering you just speak to the staff like I said they are there to help you, let them…

Visited last night for the auto 66 presentation the hotel itself is nice but the events staff were unhelpful. Despite informing the hotel twice before we arrived and then again when we got to the hotel that one person in our party needed a gluten free meal this did not happen. Everytime the staff came to the table we again told them we needed a gluten free meal this never arrived. My neice was sat at our table without a meal while we all had ours this caused my neice to get upset and ended up in tears. After about 3 hours of us arriving she finally got her meal along with a load of excuses. We were not offered our money back until I informed the events manager that my neice wanted her money back by the end of the night (she did get a refund)
Who would have thought you would have to go to all this hassle to get a gluten free meal!

The hotel could be lovely it just needs some finishing touches like our room was nice and we had a lovely sea view but the windows needed a good clean. The spa I thought was a bit cheeky asking paying guests to pay £4 and not being told that the steam room was out of order and the sauna if you wanted to use it you had to ask but there was no one there to ask. I think the 20 min free Wi-Fi is a bit dated and then you have to pay for it again bit annoying for a paying guest. The breakfast was £10.50 for continental Buffett which wasn't bad and the staff seemed friendly enough. Great hotel with so much history and in a fantastic location but just needs a bit of TLC.

A grand looking hotel that doesn't even have a kettle in the room with unfriendly and unhelpful staff. Sink tap in the room is frankly disgusting and a health hazard.

Fabulous. Nostalgic and value for money. A Jewel of its time. Obviously such a place could always use some updating, but that's what makes it special. Will certainly return again.

Stayed here at the weekend for two nights with a big group of friends had a lovely time. Yes the hotel needs up dating but the staff work really hard & the Christmas decorations were really lovely on the stairs very festive.

The worst hotel Ive ever stayed in. Spent 2 nights here with a bus tour. On first impression, very nice but when we saw our room, cleanliness alot to be desired. Thick dust on bedside lamps, headboard, toilet seat marked with a blue stain and cant be removed, shower rose dirty and dirty marks round plug holes; large heavy wardrobe sits on wedges because room slopes, very dangerous as this is in front of bed. Room freezing, had to use spare blankets and no spare heater. Evening meal was disgusting, even cream for sweet had been watered down. Breakfast was very good though. When leaving we were told to have luggage outside of our rooms for 7am and night porter would collect as they didnt have other staff to do this. We had a very poor sleep on 2nd night due to loud booming music to approx 1am and we were on 4th floor and at back of hotel. We had ours out at 645 and they were still sitting there at 815 when we gave up and carried them down to foyer ourselves. Handed in our key, reception staff to busy having their own conversation to even ask if we had enjoyed our stay. Advice stay clear.

The hotel needs updating but overall a nice stay. Staff were friendly. Good location as not far from the train station. Some rooms have nice views out to sea.

Beautiful hotel but rooms are at a very low standard. The standard of a budget hotel it's a shame a great hotel being let down. Cleaning standard fair but not great. Staff are very helpful can't do enough for you. Would I come back here again NO.

But this time perhaps not the best.
Room was comfy, but water from the sink was coming back into the bath and stunk the bathroom out. Complained 3 times but nothing done, although we were offered another room if not sorted but we were going to be out all day.
And had only one night left so no point.
We had a meal on Sat night in the restaurant.
Which I have to say mine was ok but my wife left most of hers as it wasnt up to scratch.
Lack of staff was most evident, not offered a drink with our meal as the waiter had gone missing for half an hour, I presume working behind the bar. Stayed in the hotel on Sat night.
Because of the weather and enjoyed the entertainment with a good crowd of people.
We will be back as this may have been a one off. And we do like the hotel.

Jaded and understaffed. Leisure pool costs extra, dirty and badly needing refurbishment. Breakfast is acceptable however evening meal is best avoided — suggest eat somewhere else. Don't bother complaining, it makes no difference.

We have stayed here a few time and it's just got worse they are charging for Wi-Fi now we are paying to use the pool. We got married here an it was good so we returned here. You can get a b&b on the north side a lot cheaper. We booked a sea view the last time we came here and was given a room with no window in so we complained and they put us in a sea view room. The breakfast is not up to much ether I don't no what's happened here in the last 2 years we wrote head office a letter but we didn't get a reply so looks like we will be staying somewhere else from now on … only person that as helped us is a young man called Tom he's the only member of staff that knows any thing about customer service rant over now but we won't be coming back.

The sea view room (if you stood on tip toes and looked through the fire escape), was cold, I bought a hot water bottle from Wilkos. The room was on a slope, we placed a deodorant can on it’s side and it rolled across the room. The breakfast was good but felt the evening meal was poor. Staff were nice and friendly and the service was good.

Arrived to find our twin room was a double, took over an hour and fifteen minutes to sort. Two towels in the room for two adults. Not the best, most organised stay I've ever had in a hotel. My colleagues room was awful too. Looked like they'd quickly made the cleaner's cupboard into a double room…

The staff work their socks off so to make sure guests are kept satisfied and to have a good stay. The food is amazing, aswell as the lager, beer and spirits are great tasting plus very reasonable prices. The beds are comfortable so you will get a decent sleep. The rooms are clean. This hotel has such an ambience, a relaxing atmosphere. Please try, I'm sure you'll agree with me after staying here.

Love this place for a cheeky little drink on an evening. It's a beautiful building with lovely staff. Can HIGHLY recommend.

Such a shame, this place could be magnificent with some cash and TLC. Sadly very tired and unloved. The £100 + rate for rooms is a bit of a joke. The room was clean, but shabby. We did have fun though playing hunt the kettle when we fancied a cuppa… I won't tell you where it is, don't want to spoil your fun! Breakfast was pretty shoddy, indifferent staff, lukewarm coffee and poor quality sausage and bacon. The "Spa" facilities (please note use of inverted commas) were dire. Filthy changing rooms and toilets, no pool towels, no staff by the pool, a general air of lack of maintenance. The hairdryer left a lot to be desired! If you have small children please keep an eye on them here, especially if they are prone to wandering off… they could find themselves in the pool, and not a soul would know where they were! The pool is down in the basement, basically anyone could wander in… We stayed for one night, the following night we stayed at The Crescent, a world apart… we will be staying there again!

Staff attitude was poor they could do with a course in customer services. The first room they gave us stunk of paint despite the fact there was visible damp on the room, the headboard was too small for the bed, the tiles in the bathroom were all cracked, the enamel had come off the toilet seat with a stunning view of nothing. We requested a change of room to which we were told we will have to clean one. The next room was a little better apart from being filthy with dust everywhere and the room being that much on a slant that when you sat on the chair it felt like you were falling backwards. Bed was rock solid felt like sleeping on an ironing board. Worst nights sleep I have ever had! Avoid at all costs!

The royal hotel is absolutely stunning and very clean. All the staff are very welcoming and helpful. It's in a very good location quite central to everything so is no problem with being able to walk to go where is needed.

Positives… looks good from outside, especially at night. Fantastic Victorian foyer, hallway, and staircase. Nice, large bar area with good views. Service to a good standard. Negatives… common theme with Britannia, piss poor maintenance programme, on the cheap. Always niggling things that let the appearance and overall opinion down. Not consistent with every room, but can fault ours for a sink tap with more lime scale than a 20 year old kettle, and a bathroom window that had rotted so was simply boarded over with another pane smashed. You get what you pay for, and the common theme through reviews, tells you why you don't pay royal prices here.

Just got back home from a lovely weekend in The Royal can't fault it at all. We stayed in room 324 which was newly decorated. The bathroom was nice fresh and clean. The breakfast is buffet style and plenty to choose from. All in all a pleasant experience.

I booked three rooms for my family for two nights (I could not get rooms at my first choice hotel) as we were attending a family wedding. We checked in late afternoon and were told the rooms were together and I signed for them all having been pre-paid. A very short time later we were told that one room had been changed to another floor because an existing guest had asked to stay on another night. Not the end of the world but I find the story less than credible given such a short time had elapsed since our check-in. Two of our rooms were very clean. In the other room an enormous house spider ran from under the bed but my daughter-in-law bagged it with a shoe (this was the room that had been changed). The spacious bathrooms were clean but showed signs of wear and age. The procedure for charging drinks to one’s room is bureaucratic to say the least. You can’t just use your room card, it has to be stamped and a limit agreed. I’ve stayed at many hotels around the world and have never encountered this approach before. I wondered what sort of clientele they have. They already had my credit card details! During the evening a whole group of us were waiting at the bar for some time to buy drinks but the bar man had disappeared. I raised it with reception and they said they were ‘getting a float together’. This was not good service! The queue for breakfast was enormous, slow and seemed unnecessary given the capacious dining room. The staff did their best with a silly system.

Stayed recently with a coach party, and was allocated room 326, which was complained about by a visitor a while ago. The room was really very poor, no light, small window, single bed with double mattress overhanging, etc. Etc. So after unpacking decided to enquire if any better room was available, bearing in mind that my booking was at very reasonable price. I approached an Assistant manager, STEVE, who tried his utmost to find me something suitable, as single rooms are not readily available. However, he came up with a single 5th floor, Room 524, which was wonderful compared to the one given to me on arrival. He instructed me to let him know if I needed any help in transferring my belongings to the better room, but I did manage. Hard work on your own! but it was well worth it. Well done Steve, you deserve a medal, and it absolutely made my holiday. Very many thanks. Food, entertainment, room service, etc. Was excellent, and could not fault anything else. Just the room.

It's a very old fashioned hotel, with elegant reception and dining room/lounge. Rooms were alright in size but the beds weren't very comfortable and the hotel wasn't in the best of conditions with uneven floors and generally a feel of low quality. The staff were super nice and helpful, and the TV was brilliant, but there's no Wi-Fi in the rooms, just in the lounge and reception. The breakfast was nice though. I'm not a fan of the old style of hotels, so I wasn't very impressed.

Stayed here 2 night room was dirty 2 best pushed together even tho we booked double bed so we had to sleep in single beds the entertainment was shocking in both nights the bar staff didn't have a clue what they were doung while the manager walker around eyeing up the men most of the night instead of chipping in and helping out. U pay for what u get cheap and dirty.
