Located on the A5074, just outside of Windermere heading towards the Lyth Valley. This pub serves good locally sourced food, with a selection of quality beers and has the benefit of offering accommodation should you wish to be based in a more tranquil and beautiful area. Well worth a visit.

Had a lovely meal here. Big thumbs up as it is one of the very few places that serves food until 9pm. Everywhere else in the Crosthwaite area stopped at 8:30 or even earlier. Ridiculous. Anyway, excellent food, good beer selection, decent service even though they were busy, and reasonably priced. Had to go and chase dessert but that's ok, we were just relieved to get fed.

Lots of own brewed beers, a very pleasant atmosphere and interesting choice of restaurant quality food make this a nice place to be. The countryside surrounding Winster is gentle and beautiful and a lover quiet area for low level walking in the Lake District.

Great restaurant / pub with a fantastic sun terrace. Choice of real ales and keg beers and ciders. We couldn't rate the food as not within our budget but the menu choice sounded excellent.

Such a gem! Both dishes we ordered were delicious. I had the pork, mango and stilton sausage and it was absolutely perfect. Great service. Would definitely come back when in the area.

Was just passing so no preconceptions or recommendations to go off. Fabulous lunch of haddock chips and peas, definitely well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

Lovely country location, great atmosphere friendly service and delicious food. Shepherds pie one of the best ever, burger superb fish and chips big and proper home made chips. A brilliant meal will definitely be back.

Really nice friendly place and staff. Food is good and if you're a gin connoisseur they have over 100 to choose from. Cosy ambiance in the bar area and a good car park at the rear.

We stayed in one of the homes the business rents close to the pub. It’s a beautiful 4 bed located 3 mins drive away. The quality and surrounding of the home are amazing. The landscape is something special a truly amazing area. The only issue I had was they did not have an instruction booklet on how to work different things in the property like Wifi and heating.

Our favourite stooping off point in the south lakes. Great food and good beer. Dog friendly as well.

Ordered cottage pie which was delicious, full of flavours! And the bacon and brie sandwich — bread crusty and warm, and brie melting inside. The best was saved for last… the sticky toffee pudding — to die for, all food was very very yummy! Service was excellent too, loved it, food and drinks came quickly. View from restaurant was amazing, so tranquil. Restaurant interior was tastefully decorated. We will definitely return.

Beautiful building in a picturesque location, lovely rooms, amazing restaurant, incredible gin selection, fantastic beers. I'm starting to run out of superlatives so I'll just say that I can't recommend this place enough, either just for popping in for a drink in the roof-level beer garden with its views, or for staying in one of their gorgeous rooms. A practically perfect place in its own right, but it's also only five minutes drive from Bowness on Lake Windermere, if you can tear yourself away long enough for a trip out :)

Was expecting a pub meal but this was more like fine dining! Absolutely spectacular food and the service was brilliant.

A lovely spot just outside Windermere, perfect for that romantic getaway you've been promising yourselves. The stepped slate and lime-washed exterior is adorned with well-kept flower pots that extend all the way to your door — the smell of lavender woke us in the morning, a wonderful start to the day. The staff are attentive, not intrusive, the menu is thoughtfully put together and expertly delivered — I cannot recommend the blue cheese panna cotta highly enough. The Brown Horse also offers a fine selection of gins to sample, the best of which is easily the damson sloe with lime and elderflower; the perfect companion to the gently faded, faintly French decor that instantly relaxes. The Brown Horse is a place worth finding and worth coming back to, something we intend to do time and again in future.

Honestly one of the best places we have ever stayed, really friendly staff and great food, really great atmosphere. Out of the way so you avoid the hustle and bustle of tourism but still close enough so you can enjoy the touristy bits, definitely would stay again.

Gets my elusive 5 stars. Stayed here for 3 nights. Authentic old English Inn. Fantastic room very comfortable, brilliant service. Food is fresh and of a high quality, made with fresh produce from their own farm. While we were there, Hugh Laurie came in for lunch. Quaint old place, situated in heart of Lake District, ideal getaway for quiet secluded weekend.

Great lakes pub with real ale from their own brewery. First class food for lunch or evening meal. Very reasonable prices and an incredible selection of gins not found anywhere else. Without doubt my favourite eating and drinking place in the lakes and by the way the staff are so friendly and the service is brilliant.
