I recently attended a medical convention where the Marriott Marquis was the Headquarters Hotel. The hotel structurally is fine with the staff being most accommodating. However, after traveling 3000 miles from the New York metro area to San Francisco, I was tired, fatigued, and hungry when I arrived at the hotel on Friday afternoon. Traditionally, in my travels throughout the country and abroad, when I arrive at a hotel I immediately pick up the phone and order room service while I decompress from the flight. This time, I was shocked and utterly surprised to find out that at the Marriott Marquis, a premier hotel, ROOM SERVICE WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE! This hotel is not a Holiday Inn or a two-star hotel. The "Marquis" in its name should reflect nobility and royalty. However, I assume due to a corporate decision, the guests now have no options with respect to being treated to the expected amenities, such as room service, associated with a hotel of this caliber. Then, the hotel made a written statement about the elimination of in-room dining: "In response to the changing needs of our guests. " That's nonsense! Please, do not insult my intelligence! Every guest wants to be pampered and their new policy strips that expected amenity from their guests. The corporate decision appears to have been made solely on economics versus the guests' expectations. I am sure there is a "trend" in many hotels Food and Beverage service to eliminate room service, but I thought that the Marriott Marquis was of the stature, such as the Plaza and the Grand Hyatt, that room service was part of the hotel DNA. The next morning, without breakfast in bed, I trekked down to the Mission Grill only to be told that there was a 25 minute wait FOR BREAKFAST! The next morning when I finally went to breakfast, I asked for a menu and was told, "we do not have a la carte" WHAAAAT! Being a single, female dining alone, I had to get up, stand in line at the buffet and try to balance my handbag on one arm and a plate on the other, all the while trying to put some scrambled eggs and whatever on that plate. It was a mess! This is supposed to be a luxury hotel! At almost $400 a night, they should be ashamed to charge guests that amount without the commensurate services. That hotel was not a Fairfield Inn or Courtyard by Marriott. It was the Marriott Marquis near the Convention Center, for goodness sake! Guests expect more, pay for more and should receive more that their other lower-priced hotels. Eliminating room service at the Marriott Marquis is a colossal blunder! All I know is that I will NEVER come back to the Marriott Marquis and I will never recommend this hotel with its new "No Room Service" policy to any of my colleagues or friends (and I have stock in the company).
