During our 3-night visit to Paris as the second to last stop on an organized tour of Europe for young adults, it was scorchingly hot outside. Unfortunately, in the late June heat, there was no air conditioning (despite the controls being on a thermostat, which did not work) and the Windows did not open. Three of us living in a room that barely fit the two beds on the ground (there was a bunk bed overtop) pushed up directly against each other, with no room to both walk and have luggage, didn't help the temperature. These beds, if you can call them that, were no more than two paper-thin mattresses resting side-by-side on a large linoleum table. When we went to reception to complain about the stench in our shower (which is entirely viewable to the common area of the room via a completely transparent glass door), they gave us two fans. The fans helped, but there were already three young women living in a room with two outlets, so we could not charge our phones or cameras while simultaneously enjoying the sweet relief of the room being 93 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 95. The rest of the members of our tour group also complained that the air conditioning was not working, so it was not just our room. In an attempt to sleep in, I placed the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door, and when I left the room midday, a very pushy, rude maid came in the door and began rearranging our things, and taking towels that we had brought ourselves (which looked nothing like the hotel's towels — there was no mistaking them), despite my asking her not to in perfect French. All in all, this tour was not supposed to stay anywhere fancy, but we stayed in perfectly clean, spacious, well-decorated rooms in the 6 other cities we visited, all of which were equipped with standard 21st century amenities such as outlets and air conditioning. This was the clear outlier, and nobody on this trip would have booked this hotel had it not been pre-arranged. In fact, one member of the group paid for his own room across the street and accepted the loss of having paid what I can only assume was about €7 for this room. Avoid at all costs, especially in the summer.
