Location, newness, breakfast content – certainly a five-star rating (though being in a restricted area means Yandex taxis won't pick you up until around Registan Street). Yet my rating is one star. Why? Because I cannot overlook aspects beyond the scrutiny of online reviewers: sales compliance and fire safety protocols.
① I booked a Standard Room via Expedia, yet upon check-in, I was assigned a Budget (Economy) Room without any explanation. When I noticed this and requested a room change, I was told they were fully booked and couldn't provide a Standard type (a group of about 10 guests arrived just then, so I could vaguely guess overbooking was the reason). Not wishing to waste time finding alternative accommodation, I requested at least compensation for the price difference. The response was that since the Standard room was booked at a discounted rate, it was cheaper than the Budget room's standard price, hence no compensation could be offered (despite the Budget type being continuously sold at a discounted rate). Furthermore, when I was told to speak directly to the manager and handed the phone, that manager unilaterally hung up. One can only imagine the character.
② Why are the budget rooms unacceptable? Because they lack exterior windows (only corridor-facing windows). This hotel's first-floor evacuation route is one-way only, towards the entrance. The basement, housing the kitchen, opens into an atrium.
Excellent place to stay when you are on Samarkand. The location is superb from where the Registan square and Bibi Khanym mosque are at walking distance. The rooms are spacious, comfortable beds and clean bathrooms. Staff is extremely helpful and accommodative. I will strongly recommend a stay at hotel Maroqanda.

I recommend this hotel. It's very near Registan Square. Walking distance. Rooms are comfortable. I didn't interact much with staff but generally Uzbeks aren't so friendly at first, it could be a language barrier. My only comments are that the bed sheets are a bit rough, and breakfast starts at 8am, which is a bit late if you have a morning tour scheduled.
