I’m so pleased I didn’t look at the reviews before we stayed here overnight before our our flight as I wouldn’t of booked.
The staff were very welcoming, warm and friendly. Lovely room on the 2nd floor, spotlessly clean, lovely comfy bed and cosy linen. Food in the bar is good value. Alcoholic drinks a little high but the bar staff make up for that. Don’t listen to the reviews, this place is great and incredible value.

I would not recommend this Hotel due to poor and rude reception service, mostly by a very rude asian (India/pakistan) woman who speaks very poor English and does not understand English much too. She is very unhelpful, misinforms you, tells you that your email information is incorrect and she is more than happy to argue with you too. The rest of the staff there are a little more polite.
In the 2 days staying here we have yet to speak to a British staff member. You have to speak slowly and clear otherwise you get some random reply. The food here is very limited. We was recommended to have the Buffet evening meal. Unfortunately it was not much of a buffet, you had choice of chicken or fish with vegetables. Thats it, for a cost of £18… But, the food was excellent, very good indeed. The deserts were very good too. The hotel is quite nice but there are parts that look tired or neglected. Our room was very clean and comfortable with a large Smart tv. Wifi is free but its not the best. Aircon works good, its climate control and easy to use.
The bed is tired but comfortable. Bedside lights are far too bright especially if you wish to read a book while your partner is sleeping. The swimming pool is not in operation. The room telephone does not work. The drinks are a rip-off, and don't expect a smile or manners when being served at the bar. I would have scored this hotel 7.5 out of 10, but due to the very poor reception service I can't score this hotel more than 3.

No services were open all of the bars were closed, pool is closed and when I asked for a full room service menu I was told 'we only have ham and cheese' what that means I don't know but the staff were as useless as the unopen bars.

Service was good, welcoming and room clean and big, drinks at bar very expensive tho.

Great rooms massive and comfortably warm.

Ideal for overnight stay although wouldn't want to stay any longer
The food in the 3 restaurants was very expensive.

Whoever the events coordinator is really needs more training, a boxing event of about 1000 people would require more than four bar staff, the waiters and waitresses that were here for table service were unorganised, almost all their time was spent waiting for the two staff that were working the pop up bar to pour the drinks, decided against trying to get a drink in the end as when you attempted to get their attention they look straight through you.

Great staff rooms are lovely and clean and big.

Excellent food and service. Clean and well presented if a little faded. For a night before a flight this place is ideal.

We arrived this evening having had a long drive up from the Cotswolds. We had prepaid for our dinners which was fine up until the staff said they didn’t want guests sat in the restaurant but we couldn’t understand why as there was plenty of space for people to dine, we requested that we sit in the restaurant as it was more comfortable for us instead of sat in our rooms. I would like to say we had a lovely meal & went to bed full & happy unfortunately this wasn’t the case! We had just finished our starters when a rather large guest decided to dine along side us in the restaurant! Now we can perhaps understand why staff didn’t want guests in the restaurant & no wonder when your dining with a rat! We were asked to evacuate the restaurant & taken into a separate room where we were offered room service. Unfortunately by this point we didn’t quite fancy anything else to eat knowing that there was a rat in/around the hotel. I’d like to think that staff/management weren’t aware of the animal situation but seeing the size of it & being told we couldn’t use the restaurant we struggle to believe that. We will definitely not stay here again
& we won’t be recommending you. Not only is it unpleasant but highly dangerous as rats as I’m sure you know carry many diseases & can also contaminate food.

Lifts have got a horrible smell in them. The breakfast was cold, had to tell the staff to turn the hot plates up. Defiantly wouldn't rate it a 4star.

Booked in for 1 night as we used this hotel for parking as off to gatwick for holiday.
Very brisk staff when checking in and not friendly.
Upon checking in at gatwick I realised I had left my iPhone charger in our room. I telephoned and explained the situation and was told it would be there for collection on my return.
Alas on my return it wasn't, the guy at reception really couldn't be bothered to check and eventually did but no luck with my charger.
So remember if you leave anything behind by mistake then don't expect to get it back.
I did email the hotel on my return to the uk but no response.
Also drinks at the bar are so expensive.
Would I stay here again? Most certainly not.

Booked for one night over the weekend but wish we had booked into the other Copthorne down the road as first impressions of this hotel was unwelcoming and disinterested reception area and staff. Checkout was even worse. Rooms clearly need refurbishing. Beds not the most comfy and furnishings and bathroom stained and worn. Dont expect a nice quiet weekend lie in as cleaning staff like to have a loud full on discussion outside your room at 9am and then continue to talk loudly despite opening the door to make the three of them aware of their inconsiderate noise level. On check out reception staff expected us to pay the room bill without being able to check the charges as they said it wasnt possible to print out the details. Eventually, after insisting several times, we got a printout. At no point was we asked about our stay and in fact both receptionists didnt crack a smile at any point. Awful customer service and we did not leave with a very good impression of the place.

Attended wedding since my daughter got married same place in 2013. Hotel need lots of imrovement/refurbushing. A nice venue but…

Ideal for travel to Gatwick but uber drivers took us to the Copthorne Hotel so make use the Effingham. Little dated but wasn't there long enough. Found the beds comfortable.

Lots of parking and spacious hotel and grounds. Had a room in the basement which was clean and comfy. Forgot my toothbrush and asked for one at reception desk when I checked in at 4pm which I was told would be 'sent' to my room. Was told latest for room service was 10.30pm so had to order food before I went out and leave it to go cold so I had food to eat after my evening out, plus the bar had sold out of bottles of large or small still water. No toothbrush when I returned at 10.45pm with my bottles of still water purchased outside. Went back to reception to be told I would have to wait until morning as no house keeper on duty. Everything else was okay and breakfast was good. Just make sure you don't forget to buy water or take your toothbrush…

This place has a nice event hall, went to a wedding during a weekend and they decorated it really well, but it's in desperate need of renovation, the hall was really hot, it wasn't air-conditioned, the hotel itself needs a lick of paint outside. It's all white so it looks bad that the building looks dreary, the carpets are all dates like out of something from the 80s, no double glazing so the hotel rooms have a draft coming from locked windows, but the bed was comfortable. Would I book to stay here for the weekend… Probably not, but having a place so sleep after having a rowdy night in the event hall… I'm not gonna be fussy.

Went to the 'spa and gym' with my PayAsUGym pass. It was absolutely dire. Completely run down — the ladies changing rooms were dreadful and the showers equally bad although the water was hot. The jacuzzi was boarded up, the pool had a rusty shutter pulled down over the entrance, the lights were very low and it was quite scary showering as a lone woman. The activity room (that I didn't use) was equally bad and had a huge hole in the ceiling where a light was missing. Absolutely would not return even though I can go for free to this gym with my pass.

Very disappointed… was here for a wedding and had a family room. For 2 nights… shower was rubbish, water was just trickling… no Ac and we all know how hot the weekend was… there was a power cut… for a few hours… it was just awful… I expected better. Won't be staying here again…

Was attending boxing event on30th june queue for bar was ridiculous over 40 min to get an over priced drink was nothing short of a joke food again had to queue but this was good food and fair price but you then had to eat outside as was not allowed to take it back to our seats staff seemed to be overwhelmed by the quantity of people one bar even ran out of beer.

Great value hotel. Room and bathroom good. Parking provided for the duration of our holiday. A little tired looking in places and very hot in the rooms.

Turkish wedding. Food and drinks flowed. Service was good. Grounds were good. Prices were reasonable. Buffet breakfast was good. Rooms and hotel were a little tired.

Combined overnight stay and parking for a two week holiday. Location is very good, for good and all reasonably priced.

This sprawling hotel property offers a broad range of room types. There are many price structures which may be confusing when choosing a room type. Some rooms are extremely tired with signs of heavy wear. However, this does not distract from the room's overall comfort. The dining room offers a broad range of selection including creative vegetarian dishes. There are both prix fixe and a la carte menus.

Posh on the outside cheap on the inside. Don’t bother trying to get served in the sports bar. And they’ll rip you of on the soft drinks and spirts. Rooms good apart from my TV don’t work.

I loved this hotel! I want to go back. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The Customer Service was excellent. It was an older hotel and I appreciated the charm. It had that Old English Appeal. I just loved it!

Lovely venue for a wedding with a beautiful draped main hall. Staff are also polite and friendly with rooms fit for purpose.

Lovely environment, great staff, and definitely a place to visit to charge your body and soul. The surrounding nature and architecture of the hotel is awesome.

Worked there. The place itself is really nice just stupid manager derision mate the place ending up like sh… t. Half of managers don't even speak good English I don't know how they got positions there.

If we fly from Gatwick we stay here. Good parking … the executive rooms are great. Brilliant garden centre over the road at the roundabout. Costa coffee as well!

Came here for a wedding, the bedroom weren't modern and beds weren't particularly comfortable and the breakfast was just standard but nothing special. However the hall/venue for the wedding was quite good, there was definitely a lot of space which was helpful as there were about 500+ guests. The hotel staff were very quick in turning it from the wedding scenery to the reception. As this is a big venue they offer many different events like boxing which can be very noisy and can heard from your room I might add. All in all it was ok.

Attended for a New Year's Eve party. There was good parking, and the venue was decorated beautifully with plenty of space. Unfortunately the reception area for the venue was small and there was no cloakroom; the toilets were also messy. Otherwise a good venue.

Absolutely shocking! avoid at all cost's if you actually want warm food, warm venue and staff that can understand you… all aspects handled poorly and there are so many better venues out there!

Very affordable, comfortable room (with a small, private terrace) Wonderfully comfy bed! And the friendly and helpful staff make this hotel a pleasure to visit, even on a short business trip. Very grande looking from outside, although perhaps a little 'tired' looking inside. Great atmosphere … Sports bar with the usual bar games (pool, darts etc) and a fitness centre.

The event was for a corporate Christmas party, this was by far the worst event I have ever been too, the food was dry, hard and ice cold, I've had warmer ice creams in my life, the scene was awful as half the lights didn't even work. The event was freezing cold, given that it was 5 degree's outside and it was warmer outside than it was in the venue was shocking. One gentlemen went to complain and the manger on shift, he said the food was 'adequate' and that the temperature was 'fine' The party was on until early in the morning but we decided to leave at 9 and we got there at 7… The worst thing is that we ended up having to pay for parking too! That was absolutely aweful, after an awful journey, horrible event and food and they ask us to pay to leave?! Well it's safe to say I'll be passing for prior events at this shambles of an establishment. Thanks for your "shoddy hospitality"

Had our work xmas party here. The event was excellent and a great venue, food was good for a large event. The hotel itself is a little dated, the bedrooms could do with a lick of paint and were a bit dirty. Breakfast was pretty good.

The beds were comfy and the rooms clean, but the airport parking is not managed in any way — parking is a free for all with people parking in the most inappropriate places. Keys are taken as cars 'may' be moved, but it looks like cars have been abandoned all over the place. I also phoned ahead as the motorway was closed, making us very late, to be met with a receptionist who didn't speak very good English telling me that at 7pm I was too late, they were over subscribed and I would have to go elsewhere, even though I had paid for hotel and airport parking. Thankfully when we arrived there was someone sensible on the reception desk and everything was fine. Would have been much better without the added stress!

The reception staff were very friendly and the room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was fine. Unfortunately they are the only 3 good things to say about this hotel. The bar prices are so over priced. 2 baileys and a coffee. £32.2 beers, 1J2o and a wine £24.3 Jagermeister master, 2 vodka tonic and a coffee £62.
Not only that but we got charge £10 more than the receipt stated. Which the bar staff gave back.
The bar in the function room was terrible. Hardly any choice on spirits and wine.
This was for a charity event with over 200 people, so they would of made plenty of profit. Couldn't recommend this hotel to people.

Perhaps not the usual guests, but we parked there for a week, travelling on to Gatwick by a discounted taxi and onwards on holiday. We returned at 1am via another discounted taxi, booked in which was no problem to the staff, slept soundly and left for home in the morning. Totally stress free.

Very reasonably priced airport parking and overnight stay. Hotel decor is dated and TV, although modern, did not work properly but the bed was comfortable. Would definitely use the hotel with parking again at this price.

This is a lovely hotel that is screaming out for an update. We booked a night after getting tickets for the open air cinema that was being held on site. We upgraded to a Club room and had a large double room with a view over the golf course. However the TV didn't work and the carpets are threadbare. The bed was very comfy though. Had a fantastic dinner. The set menu was lovely and the wine was very good. Breakfast is a buffet style, but not once in the 45 minutes we were there was all the food available at any one time. The scrambled eggs took 15 minutes to arrive, by which time the hash browns were all gone, (1st world problems I know) The staff were running around trying to cover front of house and do replenishment, there just wasn't enough of them. Overall we had a nice stay but this hotel could be so much better.

Lovely hotel in beautiful setting next to golf course with lake. Clean and modern. We had room number 9 which was with twin beds which were very comfy with sprung bases. Quiet room and great bathroom. Breakfast also very good with great choices. I have stayed at other hotels near Gatwick but none were as nice as this so Def would come back.

Attended a white collar boxing event. Service was very good and all staff I encountered (bar or security) were very good.

Shame because it's a nice enough place but very dated. Also a god awful TV system that you're stuck with because the other inputs are restricted. 21st Century guys, get with it.

OUR EXPERIENCE AT THIS HOTEL WAS NICE AND NASTY! Rooms need a reform, salia crap of the basin and the bed sheets were dirty. We were staying at this hotel because EasyJet cancelled our flight and got us here without giving us any solution to return to Mallorca and the hotel staff (especially a Brown receptionist and a waiter in the bar), rather than empathize with all of us, they were very nasty and gave us no nothing stay while the company's flight said they were covering our costs. They made us pay for water and drinks because said that only entered us food (£ 8 per person qie was not enough for a sandwich), even at breakfast and despite being pregnant and found children in the same situation. Who can deny something as essential as it is the water God… and over in a situation as well! NOT WOULD TO THIS HOTEL IN THE LIFE… WHAT A LACK OF HUMANITY!

Hotel outdated nooo the following, super reception staff unfriendly and the staff in general or normal or unfriendly… a 750cc water bottle cost me 4. £ 30 for q get an idea… the carpet of the room with holes… super old furniture and over we have stayed here through easyJet for a flight cancellation and they say q drinks do not enter and in easyJet told q was all inclusive… will I do not recommend it for anything and not put less star pq can not be… DO NOT COME TO THIS IF YOU CAN AVOID IT.

Decor takes you back to the 1980's. Outrageously uncourteous and unhelpful staff, from the check in staff to the maids. Won't be staying again.

We were here for our company Christmas party. The dining room had been decorated in the style of narnia and looked really good. A live band played too. It was a really great atmosphere. An excellent location for Christmas parties.

I don't usually write reviews but having read some of those less than complimentary about this hotel, I wanted to redress the balance, so here goes… Our stay was brief but enjoyable and the hotel staff were very efficient and helpful. Whilst the hotel is somewhat dated, the room was large and bed comfortable. The bathroom was equally large, clean and although I am not a fan of shower curtains, the shower worked just fine for us! Well done Copthorne Effingham.

For someone who must stay in 40 to 50 hotels a year this is by far the worst I have stayed in. If I could give it ales than one rating I would. Where do I start. — room dated — TV didn't work and needed two requests to get someone to fix it — Wi-Fi pathetic — took 20mins to fill a bath — food overpriced and not that great — drinks expensive and last but by no means least — I received a wake up call at 5.22am that I hadn't requested Never again. I very rarely write reviews but this was a horrible experience from start to finish.

Very poor choice, look and feel. Room furniture is dated, the restaurant is not refurbished since the late '60ies, at best a 3 minus stars hotel. Not worth the stay and trip, much better hotels around.

Rooms very dated, needed a mortgage to buy a drink, only stayed because I got it half price wouldn't have paid the full price, poor for a 4* hotel.

The Pool closed in November 11, notices say temporaly out of order. Does anyone know if it will ever be reopened.

This was the most dissapointing hotel ever. I booked a one night stay in the executive connusaur room and god only knows what the basic rooms are like. The spa in the photo's looked good, I wouldn't put my dog in it, dirty dull and not as the photo depicted. The bar was deserted on a saturday night, plenty of wedding guests though. A truely awful experience, complete waste of money and a dissapointment all round.

The hotel is comfortable enough, and the nearby and recently refurbished pub at the A264/B2028 roundabout is excellent value. Beware the online reservation system! The hotel reception declined to honour the reservation I had made on the Web, saying its system handled no numbers of that length, and that guests often arrived as I had. In fact, the woman waiting behind me to check in was in the same situation. The hotel found me a room at a similar rate, but without the broadband connection I had booked. No responsibility here; the problem was all mine, it appeared. At £15.75, breakfast offered poor value and desultory service: avoid.
