We went today for a spa day. Cannot recommended Darina the therapist enough. She was just amazing. 🤩

Amazing treatments by the lovely and very professional Darina in the spa.

The food was lovely but the room we had was awful room number 127 the noise was terrible all we heard was bottles getting put in bins. Then like a boiler going on all nite it was a nightmare.

I was with a friend for lunch, really friendly staff greeted us and helped us to our table, the menu was very limited as it was lunch time, I would assume there will be more choice on the dinner menu. The food was well cooked and very tasty I really enjoyed my lunch, and the service.

Everything was excellent, staff amazing.

Great stop with nice food and there is great polish map of Scotland.

Staff are fabulous. Food is delicious. A little bit of faded grandeur but so likeable. Prices are reasonable and the grounds delightful.

Went to superhero party today. DJ was fantastic, characters were lovely with the kids especially my son with ASD. And best face paints have seen. All the staff were so lovely and great food. My son is asking if we can go tomorrow! Thanks for bringing a bit of fun and joy back.

Lovely quiet location but close to Peebles amenities. Lovely clean, modern hotel. Staff were really friendly and helpful and despite last minute staff shortages the remaining staff work very hard to make sure our stay was unaffected. Bar had a good selection of drinks, delicious food and lovely wine.

Just home from a last minute decision to have a much needed break away with hubby and dog. Found the staff very helpful and friendly making this a very enjoyable experience. High standard food, comfortable and clean accommodation (we had the dog friendly standard room). Superiours all booked. lovely grounds to wander about with the bonus of the map of Scotland to view. Brilliant weekend away for our 10th wedding anniversary. Back in the same place 10 years later… lovely hotel, amazing place, brilliant breakfast. Bus stop on the main road to take you into Edinburgh (if your thinking of booking) Staff very friendly and will do anything to make your stay even more perfect. Great stay with my friends I would definately go back in the better weather to see the surrounding area. All the staff were so friendly and accommodating.

Just returned from a two night stop at the Barony. Please ignore the comments about squeaky floors! The building is 500 years old for heavens sake! I think I’d creak a bit at 500!
Staff were excellent. Nothing was too much of a problem. Meals are well priced and not sparse on quantity either!
The grounds well kept, and a lovely path up the hill is good to walk off the massive breakfasts!
If there’s one downside, the room is a bit worn and in need of a makeover, but that’s what gives it its character.
All-in-all, highly recommended.

Very friendly staff food was delicious rooms well clean, there's was nothing we could fault, we even had an afternoon tea which was delicious, next time we go back we will take our dog as the hotel seems very doggy friendly, the log burning fire was just amazing.

Stayed here in early 2016 and had various issues. Sent an email to complain about our points and did not even receive a response from the hotel. Restaurant was freezing, room was cold and some of the staff were very rude. Haven't been back and not planning on returning.

We had a lovely Christmas Party night on Saturday, staying over in a very comfortable and stylish room. The food was delicious and the staff very attentive. What a lovely way to begin the festivities.

Arguably the best place to escape to from Edinburgh! Surrounded by outstanding natural beauty, right next to significant works of public art, historical building and lovely retreat with all the amenities you’d expect at a great hotel! A true gem and the bar prices are good and great food!

The place looks nice and the reception staff lovely. But we arrived with 39 Guests on a 14m coach. They was two male staff and I asked where to park the coach he said down there?. We have 200 parking spaces a narrow road in and grass verge. I did tell them I can damage the grass or bump a car. But when I asked y didn’t they corn a place off when they New we was coming. The reply was not our problem. This place will be at the bottom of our Hotel recommendation.

Good afternoon I would like to express my great disappointment in the £168 overnight stay we had at Barony castle. Myself and my partner were looking forward to a relaxing night away before our baby is due (next week) but unfortunately it was far from relaxing. At first we were given a room at the other end of the hotel but unfortunately I did not have the energy to walk up all the stairs numerous times, The receptionist kindly changed the room to the first floor where we… were given a small room, with one thin pillow (i asked reception for a few more as there were no more in the cupboard). The carpet was extremely dirty. When we went down the stairs for a drink there was no where to sit never mind eat as the hotel was overrun by loud wedding guests — it would have been nice to have been told this as our stay was very expensive and it would have been nice to enjoy a relaxing overnight. Our dinner was £80 ontop of our stay which my partner described as bland "cruise" food, he is a head chef at a Scottish restaurant and was bitterly disappointed with the whole experience. When we went upstairs to have a nap and change there was " dance music" blaring from the suite rooms until tbe early hours of the morning. We would have mentioned this at check out, however the reception was over run with guest's and we were rushed out the door. Overall a horrible experience and we will not be back, however some form of compensation would be very welcome.

Lovely hotel in a very picturesque setting within easy reach of Edinburgh. Nice comfy rooms with tea/coffee facilities and good quality English breakfast. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will visit again.

Just had the most fantastic two days at this lovely hotel. Reception staff so helpful and friendly, rooms clean and comfortable, food very good. The highlight had to be my hot stone massage in the spa by the lovely Debbie, well worth a visit. Hotel very dog friendly, lovely walks. Will return.

A beautiful place to stay for a break. Situated near Peebles and a drive away from Edinburgh. Beautiful inside and outside, breakfast and lunch also dinner. Lovely gardens to see, there is a car park for visitors. Also in use for weddings and birthdays and anniversaries.

We had a lovely afternoon tea. A bit expensive to others we have had but lovely just the same the place is very clean and spacious. Nice staff too.

Lovely hotel with friendly staff. The rooms were more than big enough with tea and a kettle at your disposal. The only minor complaint we had was that the rooms were a tad too hot and we couldn't open the window completely. The restaurant offered a very nice Sunday roast. Breakfast was also very good. There was a buffet of both continental and English breakfast and a few menu items, like eggs Benedict, could be cooked to order, with no surcharge. If you stay at this hotel: don't forget to take a look at the Scottish map, which is only a 2 minute walk away.

The castle and grounds are beautiful, the walk to the restored altar is definitely worth seeing as is the Polish Map of Scotland. The hotel itself is good, currently having some refurbishment and looks great. Worth upgrading to their Prestige rooms, bigger and Jacuzzi bath. If having dinner I would recommend the Black Rock Steak experience. A fillet steak you cook on a lava rock, great experience and the steak was amazing. We also used the Spa facilities and these again were good. Will be returning in the near future.

Booked a table for two for lunch and was looking forward to a very rare and quiet afternoon. Poor service with skeleton staff lead to lengthy waits in ques with lots of wedding guests. No Organization of the function being held or the guests that came to the establishment whom were there to eat. Was seated at a dirty table covered in fish leftovers. Not one member of staff could smile and there was no feeling of welcomeness or communication which for a castle/country retreat with so much potential is pretty poor. The bride /groom and their party we felt should have had their own space without the prying eyes of dining guests. We personally were put off by a group seated behind us commentating on every aspect of the wedding they could see. We asked the reception desk staff for some paper to write on and they proceeded to break all confidentiality and handed me a bit of paper with the wedding guests names rooms requirements and bank details and room prices. Some serious management issues need addressed. All in all not a good experience.

The building has such a vast history, as well as the area. Not the prettiest of buildings to look at. Currently undergoing a major facelift internally. You can't do much with the exterior of a listed building. The grounds are lovely. The food is fantastic! The Polish Map of Scotland can't be fully appreciated as the stand is way to low… Perhaps add a taller stand.

A lovely place to stay. The staff were very helpful. The welcome could have been a little warmer. The spa was amazing the food to die for. Very special place. There is a lot of grounds to walk around in and lots see.

Didn't think we were going to like on first impression, appeared a bit standoffish but really good visit. Visited the polish map and it was impressive. Good food and altogether a good experience. Yes would go back.

Was there for my mother's wedding and she couldn't have picked a better place. The service was great and the staff were amazing and really went that extra mile to make my mum's big day special. 10 out of 10.

Thanks for a relaxing couple of days away. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The lava rock steaks were a brilliant experience and really tasty. I had a lovely spa treatment too. Great to see the map of Scotland in the grounds.

Was there from Sunday till Tuesday room was fabulous we were upgraded to the darnhall room it was huge with lovely views. Staff very helpful and food delicious will certainly return great place to stay. .

Went for an overnight stay. Has amazing spa facilities. Greeted with a large glass of wine and canapes. Lovely staff. Fantastic range of food at breakfast. Has casual or formal dining. Treatments best booked in advance. Polish prisoners of war interned here. Beautiful place to get married. Lovely grpunds for photographs.

Had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. The drive up to the castle is impressive, with the castle awIting us at the top. Staff Re excellent, so helpful all our needs and wants. Food was very good and wine list very affordable. We were caught in a snow blizzard and with certain road closures, and the Castles driveway covered in 2 feet of snow, we were forced to stat on! No hardship, log fire, hot chocolate and very accommodating staff made our extra days, very comfortable. Both my husband and I are going back in Spring to enjoy the picturesque grounds that the Castle sits in. Special thanks to Steve, Samantha, and our waiter for a most enjoyable stay. You all made us feel very special.

Stayed here 12th/13th February 2018. Although we only had an overnight stay I can't fault this hotel in any way. The staff were very courteous and helpful. We had the 'classic room' which was big enough for 2 and nice and clean with tea/coffee facilities also nice and warm. The bed was big and comfortable with extra pillows in the wardrobe. Spacious bathroom with lovely soft towels on a heated towel rail, this was very welcome as it was snowing and cold outside when we were there. The food was excellent… sandwiches in the bar Monday afternoon and 3 course evening meal in the restaurant. Delicious with brilliant service. As for breakfast… everything you would expect from a buffet, plus extras on the menu card. The hotel grounds are a pleasure to walk around. I highly recommend this hotel and we're looking forward to another visit in the summer.

Very friendly and helpful staff, some parts of hotel have been refurbished, others haven't and they really need it now. Bedrooms comfortable and although warm you were reminded 24/7 the heating was on due to noisy radiators, but that might just be due to the age of the plumbing. Steak on the Stone in the restsurant was simply delicious. Lounge area very comfortable with a good range of drinks. Needs upgrading now and despite this being our third visit probably wouldn't go back until refurbishment has been done.

We had a lovely time at Barony Castle. Room was big and clean with seating area. Bathroom had a jacuzzi bath and steam proof mirror. The bar had plenty of places to sit. They have a nice sized pool with a sauna that we loved. Restraint felt a little cramped but the food was nice. I wanted a steak, but it was a "cook yourself" deal. So I didn't bother. Breakfast was a buffet with everything! We had a nice walk around the grounds and it was beautiful with plenty to see including the Great Polish Map. We would recommend and go again.

Came with my husband for our wedding anniversary and had a really relaxing and enjoyable visit. We paid for a privilege room and enjoyed the amenities that that provided, as well as the spa bath in the room. The bar had a lovely, warm atmosphere and dinner in the restaurant was very enjoyable. We used the pool and sauna which were both relaxing, though we were lucky in that it was quiet when we went, I don't think I would have enjoyed it had there been many more people. The next morning breakfast was self serve and had a large selection of anything you could want at breakfast. Before checkout we had a walk around the grounds and visited the great Scottish map, although it was covered in snow it was still a great sight with interesting history. The alter at the end of the yew trees was another notable area to visit. The snow made what was already a nice walk into a romantic winter wonderland. I will definitely be returning. Staff were all very friendly and accommodating too, especially when we got our car stuck in the thick snow!

Stayed here with the girls as a Christmas present to each other. The hotel is lovely and receptionist was very friendly and chatty on arrival, booked us in for our evening meal and very informative.
The food in the restaurant was lovely, all three of us thouroughly enjoyed it.
We decided to go for a drink in the hotel bar before heading back to our room. At about 10.30 my friend ordered two french martinis and a pina colada (relatively simple cocktails).
We waited about 40 mins for them to come — at one point the bar staff had disappeared completely. When they finally arrived one of the martini glasses was almost half the size of the other! For £7.50 is a joke! We mentioned to the waiter who said dont worry they're just different glasses!
We had a room on the first floor and found it very nice and clean. Two single beds and a double.
The only gripe we had about the room was far too warm and no way of turning the heat down.
I would return to the barony castle hotel in the future as these points haven't put us off, just miffed at the service in the bar area.

Love staying at Barony castle, this was our second stay. Unfortunately room 132 has a very cheap/old/tired uncomfortable mattress and now I'm struggling with my back (it's aggravated a long standing back issue). The hotel were great and allowed our dog to stay for the night for a fee. The food in the restaurant was really good but the healthy eating chicken lacked a bit of flavour. The cook your own steak was a massive hit with my partner and he said it was a very good quality fillet. The deserts were amazing, the chocolate and orange torte is definitely one to try. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast, despite turning up 15 minutes before serving was due to stop there was still a great selection and it was lovely and fresh. We will definitely return.

Stayed as overnight guest, very comfortable room, gym and pool facilities a little small but okay. Tasty breakfast. Overall well presented and well priced, would definitely stay again. Well done.

The rooms were freezing cold, due to the radiators not working. The building looked like it had seen better days and was in need of renovation. The evening meal was very basic and the entertainment pretty standard. Luckily there was lots of alcohol so I ended up not being bothered by any of it. Definitely wouldn't go for anything other than a work do.

Noisy hotel, freezing cold pool, broken Sauna, broken hairdryer. Staff in spa allowed me to book a massage in advance of my arrival only then to tell me on the day the girl who does them was never scheduled to work that day. Would not do a spa day here as the pool area is also used for children's swimming lessons. To add to this the rooms were not cleaned properly and the lift was broken. Food is fantastic however.

Very nice location. Comfortable hotel. Staff in the main very friendly and helpful. My only problem was the fact that the meat was served very rare which I realise is the way chefs rave about but it really isn't the way most people like. Apart from that I would highly recommend.

We booked an overnight stay with breakfast. On arrival there was a wedding taking place which of course meant the hotel was very busy, we were supposed to have a superior double room, it’s was very small, not superior at all. We went to the public bar which was full of wedding guest, fair enough, waited for 10mins and never even got looked at by bar staff despite being in the line to be served, the bar was of course very noisy and it was at this point we realised this was not going to be the relaxing time we had thought we would be experiencing.
Upon this we made the decision to leave, we had got to the hotel after 3pm and checked out at 5 past 4, meaning we hadn’t even been there an hour. At the reception we explained that we wished to leave due to noise and how busy the hotel was, which of course was our choice. I’m unsure what most people are looking for when they go away, but we are normally looking for a nice relaxing time.
I was of course charged the full payment for the night and immediately contact the company by email explaining why we decided to leave, assuming that a big company like Mercure may be sympathetic and understanding, but apparently not, I received an email yesterday stating we would not be refunded the £121 they took from us for being on their premises for under an hour. I have of course responded to this however they are not will to refund our money.

I took my wife to Barony Castle hotel for our 24th wedding anniversary. The hotel itself was nice, rooms are a bit basic but they are okay. However, for the full duration of our stay the lift was not working properly, I reported this to staff within 30 minutes of our arrival and was told the engineer was on his way, it was still malfunctioning when we checked out two days later. On our last night my wife and I actually got stuck in the lift on our way up to our room, this was very distressing. I later found out that untrained staff had been just using the reset button each time the lift failed and none of them seemed to understand how dangerous that could be. At no point did any lift out of order signage go on the lift door's. We had been given a room on the third floor, which if the lift had been working would not have been an issue, however I have very serious osteoarthritis and I am weeks away from a hip replacement operation so walking up and down three floors of stairs was very painful. This whole episode made me question the running and management of the actual building and who if anyone was in charge of health and safety because to just keep resetting the lift and allowing guests to keep using a lift that was clearly in desperate need of a service from a trained engineer was a serious lapse of health and safety. All of the above is a crying shame because it spoilt what is otherwise a nice hotel with pleasant surroundings and very nice staff.

Read mixed reviews of the place but we had a great stay away. Its close enough to home for travel but still has the feel of being away from it all. Set in nice surroundings and grounds for walking — and has an old fashioned kind of charm. We had a voucher deal for b&b which also included canapes and a cocktail each. We actually turned up the day before we had booked (my mistake) but the staff were great and managed to accomodate us anyway even though it was quite busy with a conference on and I would have given 5 stars because of this only to take one back off because the pool, sauna and jacuzzi were closed whilst we stayed and we enjoy these facilities when away so this was poor. We ate in the bar and the food was nice and the drinks were reasonably enough priced for a hotel. The room was comfortable enough (there was stains on the carpet but at the end of the day thats relatively minor) and we slept well. Breakfast was good and a choice of porridge, cereals, pastries, fruit and cooked breakfast so something for everyone. All the staff I came across were also friendly and helpful. Ive stayed in more luxurious venues bur overall an enjoyable stay — ideal for a quick getaway.

Place is just run down and dirty. Food is mediocre at best and not worth the price. We were told on checkout we had an upgraded room and had to pay an extra £15. The upgrade was a coffee machine in the room. WOW! That's pretty standard in every other hotel. The people in the room upstairs from us had a shower and water started running down the wall from the ceiling into our room. We didn't dare use our shower as the amount of filler around the edge of the bath was a cause for concern. Disturbed sleep due to the continuous squeaking of floorboards as people walked around their rooms, or got up during the night to use the bathroom. Now this next point is down to preference, but the room was roasting hot. The radiator was off, the lobby outside the room was a good temperature, but our room was like the centre of the Sun. So hot that the loads of water that had poured down our wall actually completely dried within 15 minutes! Not a good place to stay.

Oh dear! What a disappointment. Wonderful building and surrounds let down by a dismally run hotel. Food below average, room not cleaned on our second day, toilet roll holders falling off wall. Staff disinterested. We felt like second class citizens. Sorry Mercure but we wont be back.

Hotel of the Mercure chain with strengths and weaknesses. Location very nice and also the first impression from the outside nice. If you want to go to your room helps a good sense of direction. Zimmer was o. K. Just how to note those old sliding windows, no idea. For the "spa" area, you need a code that you get at the front desk on demand. Food was so far O. K. Personal friendly.

Posh hotel for a budget price. A little dated and rooms a bit small. But best in the area for money and only half hour drive into Edinburgh.

Wonderful place to stay though a little far off. With Uber you will love it. But never go for 301. Nice food though.

Lovely place to spend 2 days. Although away from Edinburgh, the place is charming and it's surroundings are fantastic. Wi-Fi did not work properly, the toilet had trouble which was fixed, does not have lift. So few glitches here and there. But as I said, it has beautiful walk around it and it is placed in great suburban landscape. So worth the stay. Moreover, the rice was really attractive.

Lovely grounds, hidden gem is the Polish map of Scotland. Lovely castle setting. Deals are always available on voucher sites. Adequate standard rooms and some lovely suites. Only down point was you can't just have a steak cooked for you and put on a plate, they only offer 'steak on stones', I know this is popular with some people but I don't like paying £28 for my dinner and having to cook it myself ;)

A lovely setting. Upon arrival was greeted by very helpful and friendly staff. Hotel is very clean with a lovely atmosphere. Used a conference room, water, glasses, mints, paper and pencils all provided. Nice and tidy and of a good size. Could have done with a few extra plugs but nothing we couldn't work around. A gorgeous hotel in outstanding countryside and lovely views. Was a great overall feeling.

Lovely venue and friendly staff, but a few details let them down. The check in staff hadn't received all the information about our stay from the agent we booked through (dinner reservations, wine for the room etc. ) which took a bit of time to sort out. The room itself was pretty tired. The window wouldn't stay open as the catch was broken and the paint in the bathroom was peeling off the wall. Both food and service were mixed at dinner and breakfast. Won't rush back.

Stayed in room 301 for one night with one treatment with my partner on the 5/1/17. Must say I won't be rushing back. Staff where friendly and spa treatment team where excellent very friendly. The hotel room was of average size and was fine a few scuffs on walls but other wise ok. Bed was comfortable but could not get shower to work and as bath was small had to go with out till I got home so a bit disappointed. Hotel was very cold corridors where freezing. And while having evening meal at the bar area there was a bad draft and table area was also very cold there was two heaters next to us but none of which I found to be strange especially at this time of the year. My meal was good but partners steak pie was not so good. A very small individual steak pie with very little meat and gravy so she left disappointed but must say gentleman that served me at the bar was spot on. Pool was freezing but sauna and showers where very good. This hotel is certainly no better than 3 star. But is crying out for improvements in every aspect.

Attending a wedding with an overnight stay. Wedding was great and grounds and reception rooms adequate. The accommodation and hotel above the ground floor was however small and had dated décor. Our room had a view of a wall and a broken TV remote. Many random switches in room who knows what they controlled! It was clean but not a £115 per night room. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was good. However bar prices were on the expensive side. I would probably try the other local hotels 1st before staying again.

Beautiful house. Friendly staff. Good food. We held our wedding here. Our friends enjoyed walking the grounds. Path to the alter is gorgeous.

Lovely weekend away. Hotel and grounds lovely. Used swimming pool sauna and gym. Breakfast very nice.

Only draw back was the spa facilities. Went in on a Sunday afternoon and there were kids swimming lessons on… Which is fine I suppose but the fully clothed parents standing around the pool was a bit off putting. Not a quiet place to have a swim and couldn't get a shot of a heated bed because the parents were sat on them. Other than that we had a lovely weekend! Good was great and the room was lovely not to mention the grounds.

Wonderful setting, classy building. Not the biggest room we've ever stayed in and quite claustrophobic and hot. We ate in the restaurant which was good if not a bit pricey. Didn't like the loud music they played while we were eating and I'm sure they turned it up when I mentioned it. We had a pleasant drink sitting outside and the breakfast was good.

I've stayed here on five occasions now, it having been a good local hotel but far enough away to make a journey of it for the odd weekend. Each time I've visited I've something more to find fault with. The last two times its been the quality of the restaurant. I'm afraid the last time was just enough to make me decide I'm scoring this off my list. The hotel is now showing it's age and could really do with a lick of paint and I'm afraid no matter how hard I try the food now is decidedly average, possibly below. It's not that difficult to make a set menu presentable, however it would appear it is. I would say give it a go but don't expect fine dining even at the prices that are charged.

Lovely Rooms. Very comfortable accommodation in a clean environment. Housekeeping staff very friendly. First impression not great. I arrived and as I approached reception the person behind the desk went through the back. Very nice place though.

The location is brilliant, the building is great and the service is perfect. The room we had was a bit rough. Very good value though considering there is a spa. Look out for the labelling on the hot tub buttons — spelled incorrectly.

The privileged rooms were poor, either that or they got our room booking mixed up, for what we paid and asked for very disappointing! changed days since the hotel changed hands, and not for the better! staff were polite but not very welcoming!

Great place to stay. Close to Edinburgh. Only con, despite being given free WI-FI. I was unable to connect.

We had our xmas party on the 29 Nov 2013, we had great night, the food was very good, rooms very clean and tidy and the staff were very welcoming. Breakfast was just what everyone needed after the good party the night before. All at Edinburgh University Officers Training Corp we will be back thanks.

Beautiful, Quiet, Relaxed atmosphere. Staff were all friendly and worked to a high standard. Thoroughly recommend.

Great place friendly staff well located for being a base to travel around from.

Our second stay and going back for a third. Very relaxing.
