Skye Backpackers Hostel

CAT, cosy lounge, friendly staff and nice wee room.

I like the true outdoors feel of Skye, the rain the wind that keeps the midgies at bay and a lovely fire. I've booked to camp in the back garden of the Backpackers whilst my better half has a lovely steak dinner braising in the backpackers kitchen. Best part about it is people from all over the world with a common interest (Skye). Lovely people and fantastic friendly staff. Highly recommend here … fantastic eye opening experience … Thankyou for accommodating us in our unique way. I stayed at Skye Backpackers through a tour arrangement with Discover Scotland. The rate was reasonable, and the facilities were adequate. Staff was friendly, and everything was clean and well kept. My only "complaint" (and I hesitate to even use that word) would be that the very thin mattresses on a base of plywood, were horrendously uncomfortable. But if you are only staying a night or two, it's not really that big a deal.

Nice place with great views! I was just expecting the people there to be more lively and full of activity. Warm water and free food though! And the staff are nice.

We stayed 2 nights and found it very friendly and welcoming. Dorm rooms were spacious enough with good lighting. Major downer though is the terrible bathrooms: 3 or 4 toilets and showers only for the whole hostel (several dozen people) just not enough. Waiting up to half an hour just to wash your face and brush your teeth is pretty frustrating. There is free parking all through the town also so their advertisement of free parking doesn't really matter that much.

Stayed in a 10 bed dorm. Turns out it’s not in the building. It’s the “caravan” and outside in a trailer. It’s small and the best are tiny. Feels like a kids room with bunk beds. The mattresses are thin and small. The door doesn’t close easily and on the middle of the windy night the door flew open. It would have been better if we knew the beds were located in the caravan outside. To know what to expect or if we knew we might have booked another place.

Great location, fabulous staff, and comfortable beds — and a cat! I love the artwork everywhere too. The kitchen, dining, and lounge are very tiny for the amount of people and long term guests are not mindful of other guests, quiet hours being a mere suggestion. I think the hostel ethics are due to the type of crowd there though because I didn’t have this issue at Fort William Backpackers.

The staff we worked with were just as memorable as the amazing place we were in. If you find yourself traveling in the Isle of Skye I highly recommend a stay at Skye Backpackers.

On our Scotland vacation in 2008, we stayed in many different hostels. All our favorites were hostels from the MacBackpackers, and our most favorite by far was the Skye Backpackers because it just felt like home and like family! I remember parking our car in front of the hostel, and even while I was getting out, a cat started snuggling with me. I should later learn his name was Hemorrhoid (yes, seriously! ), and he was kind of a mascot for the hostel. I remember these two signs on the inside of the entrance door: One had a picture of Hemi on it, saying "Please don't let the cat in! We love him, too, but some people are allergic! ", while the other one had a sketch of a midge on it, saying "Please don't let the midges in! We don't love them, and it's safe to say the whole world is allergic! " That's the kind of humor you come across all over this hostel. :) Also, when we were entering the hostel for the first time, we overheard a discussion between a Japanese guest and Kate, the manager at that time. The Japanese woman told Kate that she hadn't gotten a key for her room, and Kate explained that there aren't any keys for the rooms because nobody locks their doors on the Isle of Skye, but if the guests had any valuables they wouldn't want to leave in their rooms, Kate would personally take care of them while the guests were gone. That sounded so much like home for me because I was used to open doors from where I come from.
