We went yesterday for lunch food was awful would never return the waitress was lovely the chef needs retraining 1/10 for the food very disappointed.

Stayed last night with a party of 9 over 5 rooms. All rooms were to hot (as discussed with the group and all radiators turned off) with windows not working properly, so they don’t stay open. Breakfast was awful with undercooked mushrooms and overcooked bacon. For an additional £20 you could get a night in the Aviator luxury hotel! The rooms look ok, but Centre lights are to dim with tacky dated shades. And given the temperature of the rooms, fans would be a good addition. Wouldn’t stay again unfortunately.

Went here for lunch, staff were very cold and abrupt, felt like they didn’t want to be there. Ordered two of the same meals, came out 10 minutes apart, staff being snappy with one another, chef came out to ‘deal with a complaint’ with another customer, VERY rude and felt that although there may be underlying issues with regular customer, we shouldn’t have been seeing that and felt very uncomfortable. Food was ok and reasonable but staff attitude was very off-putting which is a shame as have been here before, but would seriously doubt coming again. Shame.

Stayed here for a week with a colleague while surveying in the local area. The room was very comfortable, although noise from the main street was a little intrusive first thing in the morning. The pub downstairs offers excellent food. I would certainly consider staying here again.

I'd personally would recommend this place. I've had multiple visits sometimes it is touch and go on service on the occasions I've visited. Generally, good service just depends on staffing levels and demand levels at the time of visiting!

Facilities were lovely and modern and rooms were clean with friendly, helpful staff. Rooms would benefit from the addition of a fan as they do get very warm at night. Guests like myself would also appreciate softer closing doors! People passing sounded like elephants through the corridor which actually made the room shake.

We are so lucky in Alton to have The Swan, we can pop in any time of the day and have a very reasonably priced meal, children are well catered for. I'm always in The Swan, such value for money, The staff are so kind and accommodating, for me this is the place to have a very good time with the family.

We had Sunday lunch at the Swan. We arrived at 12pm and were pretty much the first there. By the time we left the restaurant was full. The food was very good although the lamb shank was a little on the small side. Service was good overall and we were all happy with our experience.

Had lunch, peas hard and charged for alternative potatoes. Wine and Soda expensive. Service very pushy wanting drinks order before we had sat down.

Wonderful establishment with a lovely restaurant within the hotel, that serves great meals that aren't overpriced, I definitely recommend visiting.

We popped in for a quick lunch, so cannot comment on the accommodation. We were a bit disappointed with the lunch though. It was nothing special, although to be fair it was fairly cheap. Maybe the pricier options would have been better. There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing, but presumably they were hotel guests going about their business. A chap on the next table was complaining about the price of the lime in his drink, and the manager spent ages talking to him about it, without thinking of all the other people who just wanted to eat their lunch in peace. So it was not as good as we had hoped. It might be different in the evening, and it is in a convenient position in Alton so may be good from that point of view if you are looking to stay somewhere for the night.

The hotel has undergone a lot of positive renovations and the rooms are comfortable and clean. The location down town in Alton is great albeit the rooms are not as quite with some road traffic. The restaurant is good as is the bar and Reasonably priced. What lets down the hotel is the attitudes of some of its staff. Less than friendly at best and down right rude at worse. Never the less, it is probably the better of most hotels in Alton and is always very busy.

Had to meet a friend for a brief business meeting. Nice selection of tea and coffee and other hot drinks. Nice cakes and biscuit selection as well. Staff very knowledgeable of the history of Swan hotel with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The location is a plus, however other things to consider when choosing this place are: the cleaners here are absolutely rubbish. They can get in your room without prior notice or knocking! And when they see you inside they are suprised and never say sorry. Instead they tell you they need to clean the room and you need to get out in 10 mins! Or you room will not be cleaned at all if you will not go away. All the time I was worried someone will break in. Once a male cleaner broke into and I was in my underwear! There is no lock on the door… They do not change the sheets until your check out. They do not hoover the floors. PROS: central location, all the buses nearby. Pub just on your doorstep.

Food is good but not cheap. The eating area by the bar if draughy as there are two doors constantly opening restaurant is good.

Refurbished in the past year, rooms very well appointed, friendly staff and good food. Will definitely stay there again.

Went to the Swan for dinner with a large group, they were very accommodating, food was tasty and well presented — menu on offer has a large range of prices that cater to all needs — overall a very good evening!

Had a lovely few days here with my granddaughter who has never stayed in a hotel before, she loved it so much she didn't want to give the key to our room back coup room was on the ground floor so easy to get to, it was very clean and comfortable, staff were great very helpful, I did have a little problem with my bill but that was put right by the manager as soon as it came to his attention, and he called me personally, will definitely stay here again, and fingers crossed will get the same room as promised to my granddaughter.

Very nice hotel, comfortable beds so a great nights sleep. Free cooked breakfast and breakfast bar with hot and cold drinks. I would definitely stay here again and recommend.

We have been for lunch on a number of occasions now and have been disappointed by the standard of the meal. We have spoken to staff to advise of our opinion. We wanted to book for Boxing Day but not one of the staff appeared to be able to carry out this simple task.

A very cosy hotel located in a fairly quiet town. The rooms are clean and well kept. The restaurant food was well prepared and the restaurant/ bar has a warm atmosphere. The only problem I found was that the windows of the room would not open, which appeared to be due to the last paint job. As a result the room was a bit stuffy since it couldn't be aired during the day. Please note that there is no laundry service but there is a dry cleaners a short distance away .

Great hotel. Lovely atmosphere and the rooms were well set up, clean and cosy. Very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was exactly what you need in the morning and they can cater for your strange morning cravings.

Large, spacious and airy, bar/restaurant. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Decent choices in drinks, although priced slightly above average. Very popular with locals and visitors alike and offering a very good menu, with lots of choice. Bright and traditional decor, complete with comfortable seating, makes this an ideal venue for that special occasion… or just afternoon tea. Highly recommended.

Historic, renovated, cozy.

Very clean, recently decorated in usual grey. Great breakfast service & food. No complaints, comfortable but feels like a chain hotel.

Excellent location in the heart of Alton. Wide choice on the menu. Friendly and welcoming staff. Spacious dining area so although busy it didn't feel cramped. An ideal refreshment stop when exploring this lovely town.

Arrived after a long drive, parked out the front of the hotel. Went in to book in, greeted by a friendly funny and helpful young man. Asked about parking and was given perfect easy instructions to follow.
Went up to our room, and was really pleased. The room was warm and beautifully decorated. Everything was very clean and we were very impressed.
I LOVED the fact that there was Hot Chocolate sachets in the room as we don't drink tea or coffee. Added bonus of a couple of little packs of biscuits. Very welcome after our drive.
Slept really well on the double bed, very comfy indeed.
Went down to breakfast in the morning, we were seated straight away and told to help ourselves to the buffet part of breakfast, perfect selection of cereal, juice, fresh fruit, toast, and various jams and marmalade, also yoghurt with fruit compote as well as some Danish pastries. As we sat back down were we asked about our cooked breakfast, which arrived perfectly a few mins after we had finished our cereal. It was very very good. How refreshing to have decent quality sausages. And more than enough on the plate.
Offered tea and coffee as well.
Overall it was a very comfortable stay with lovely rooms great food and friendly staff.

We arrived on a cold evening after pre booking the room several weeks ago, to find the room extremely cold — 4o as all heating was turned off. We turned it on but was 2 to 3 hours getting it warm. Then we discovered no toilet paper in bathroom and unable to contact anyone as now past midnight, lucky we had some tissue with us.
The next morning we ordered one coffee and one tea the coffe arrived but still no tea after 15 minutes so I reminded the waiter, then reminded him again before receiving 2 teas. The service was very slow and poor and the guy on the next table was complaining as never received hi breakfast when the others in his party had finished theirs.
Then we came to check out and rang the bell at reception then rang it another 4 times so after a long wait went to the bar to find no staff there, so went into the dinning room and final found one lady making coffee who said she will find someone, eventually we checked out some 15 minutes later.
On a poser time note the room was newly refurbished with comftable king size bed
Although we had stayed here before some years ago, the service was now poor, and the rooms needed to heating turned on when we are having period of cold.

On Sunday 3rd April 2016, my wife and I met up with friends for lunch in the Pub at The Swan. Service was fantastic, food was great and delivered very quickly. The setting we thoroughly enjoyed and will certainly be back.

Comfortable, clean and relaxing. Ample parking, good quality Wi-Fi. Tasty food and drink at a reasonable price.

Expensive drinks. Rubbish outside lighting. Warm and friendly atmosphere.

Food was fine, but there was a loud man with very Tory views spouting off nearby which really spoilt the atmosphere.

I hired the function room for my 21st birthday on Friday the 14th of September, at the cost of £150 plus another £50 to use the room for one hour after 12am. At twelve midnight people came in from the main bar, despite the fact that I had been promised exclusive use of the room. They also began to take the food meant for my guests and were rude and antagonistic, claiming they had been given the go ahead by the bar staff from the main bar to come in. I complained at the time to the staff on the bar in the function room, and later wrote a letter of complaint to the manager, expecting a partial refund or at the very least an apology. I received neither. Instead, the manageress insinuated I was lying, she made some unfounded claims and accusations to which there was proof to the contrary. Surprisingly she also stated that she would not have another 21st in the function room and it was not a party venue, a comment which I am happy to pass on to people and should be reflected on the Swan website. Based on my experiences on the 14th September and later discussions with the manageress of the Swan, I certainly could not recommend it as a function venue or even as a place to stay. This is due to the service I received and the rudeness of the manageress, which is apparently routine as it has been mentioned in many of the online reviews; neither will any of my guests or family be recommending the Swan.

I've been stopping at the Swan for several years and it is full of atmosphere. The bedrooms are a little basic, and some have sloping floors — but it is a very old Inn. You can still see something of the historic coaching inn structure in the reception area, although all the other rooms have been swept away to make a big ground floor flexible bar-lounge area. The snag is that it is owned by a Pubco. Greene King, in fact. They are taking too much money out of it to spend on fancy staff at head office. The menus and the atmosphere in the bar are modern, well thought out, and would be fine if you only called casually or stopped for one night. Stop any longer and the cracks begin to show — this week they had no spinach, and could do nothing about it because food (including fresh vegetables) are delivered weekly by head office. The menus are not local, or varied according to the skill of the chef — they are centrally dictated. No money is spent on building maintenance at all. The historic sash windows are cracked and the paint bare, the outside walls are discoloured and ravaged by damp and unsympathetic cement repairs, plants grow in the guttering and all the downpipes leak. Some of the bedrooms have had a coat of paint, presumably to re-afix the aging wallpaper, and the furniture in the rooms is in reasonably good condition. But this historic building which has lasted 4 centuries may not see a fifth.
