The lobby is modern and sharp looking but this modernisation has not continued to the rooms which have been partially upgraded at some point in the past (more on this later). We were greeted by a friendly member of staff as we checked in and they offered us an upgrade to a business room for an additional £35 which they said was bigger and with unlimited tea/coffee and water. I agreed to the charge and they said they would send up housekeeping (with the water I believe she said). We went up to the room and relaxed for a while but no sign of housekeeping so we went out and there was no water when we returned late that evening but fortunately I had purchased some on the way back. The room looked ok at first glance but why do hotels inside on putting throw pillows on the bed against the pillows you sleep on when people throw them on the floor! You look around the room and you see a huge accumulation of dust on top of the fire alarm near the bed and it goes downhill in the bathroom. Above the toilet there is bench top that is adjacent to the sink and it's removable for maintenance but each time they remove it instead of removing the silicon they just keep adding more and more to seal it up each time so it doesn't sit in place and you have huge amounts of silicon around it. The handle to flush doesn't work properly requiring 5-10 pressed at times to get it to flush. The shower curtain had been removed and replaced with a glass screen which isn't really big enough but the other problem is the plastic drip trim at the bottom is reversed so water running down the glass drips onto the floor and it was filthy with months and months of crud and mould building up. The bathtub could have been cleaner and there was mould in the corners and some hair that wasn't ours and outside the bathtub the corners on the floor haven't been cleaned in a long time. I do question if management actually bother to inspect rooms because these are all long term issues and not faults that appeared overnight. How long does it take to inspect a room? The windows were old metal types with a single piece of glass in them but we didn't notice a lot of noise (looking into the middle of the hotel) nor was it cold enough to be an issue. Sleep was good with very little noise noticeable (I tend to sleep through most things but my wife didn't say anything). Breakfast the next morning wasn't too bad, there wasn't a huge variety like we've seen at other hotels but it was still nice and filled us up. We checked out after dinner as we were putting out luggage in left luggage at the adjacent train station, staff were busy with other guests so we dropped the cards in the box provided and left. Would I stay here again? I don't know, I feel that the £35 wasn't really worth it (especially as the water never arrived and I had to buy it), there appear to be some issues with cleaning/maintenance at this hotel (which is a management issue not the staff) and I would want to stay in a room with an upgraded bathroom with shower.
