Reviews of Birch Selsdon 4*
Excellent service. Beautiful place.
First time here for my mums 80th absolutely amazing thxs so much xx.
Lovely hotel great restaraunt good bar too. Not tried golf course yet but in the future yes.
Amazing place and lovely people very helpful.
Easy access, pleasant staff and nice interior.
This is possibly the worst customer service I have ever received from a hotel. I have called the customer services number 8 times. I left three messages where I was promised a callback but didn't hear from the hotel. I luckily managed to get through to reception (the internal phone system sends you round in circles and then cuts you off) and spoke to the Front of House manager, Joshua, to organise a refund and he promised a call back the next day. He did not call back. I have emailed the hotel twice since and have had no response. I'm seriously concerned that I just won't get a refund for my cancellation even though this was promised to me by the Front of House manager. 0/10 for customer service. I'm genuinely shocked that in this day and age and with the transparency of social media that this hotel is still around. I'm just shocked at the blatant disregard for customers. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
Charming staff in reception, dining rooms and bar areas, and the room was spotlessly clean. Will return.
Lovely afternoon tea with my daughter and granddaughter. Very relaxing, friendly staff and fantastic views.
Will never stay here again. Gorgeous surroundings and entrance hall but once in our room well what can I say. Dirty carpet full of stains and creased to the point you could fall over. Window wouldn't shut and rotten TV had big crackers down it. I could go on and on. Complained and staff gave us another room which was boiling hot no air con and the room was a little cleaner but carpet still creased and the veiw was golf buggies and a rat catcher box right outside our window so disappointed. Breakfast was worse and absolute shambles. Very disappointed and will never return or ever recommend this hotel to anyone. Felt sorry for the staff they were very polite but all had sad faces.
Definitely won't be staying here, even if you paid me! 4⭐ Appearance — rather grand with a golf course at the rear. The grounds and the terrace was very nice. Pool and gym looked nice although we never had the chance to use them 2⭐ Room — NOTHING like the picture above (De Vere's YouTube advert), OLD and in need of modernising, our bathroom leaked, no air conditioning although a fan was provided and the room was very warm. Carpets were old and tired, good job we brought slippers with us. Bed was comfortable. We were lucky to have lower ground floor and didn't need to use the lift because that wasn't working for some time and still wasn't working when we arrived. Please read the reviews from TripAdvisor. 2⭐ Breakfast — poor range, bacon probably boiled and not fried or grilled, still had the brine all over it. The hash browns were rubbery. We asked for 2 lots of poached eggs, 2 of them were over done and were sent back 1⭐ Service at breakfast — miserable bunch of staff! We joined another couple for breakfast, didn't ask us if we wanted anything to drink and when we did ask a member of staff for hot drinks, they didn't even notice we had no cups and saucers.
Lovely, impressive looking hotel. Only played golf here, only a golf shop here, no clubhouse whatsoever! Bottled drinks and chocolate only, food wise! Food available in hotel at exhorbitant prices! Good course, long and a bit hilly. More work needed on tee off areas! Not very flat! Fair price though. Friendly staff. Will use again.
Room was extremely forgotten and dated carpet was coming up. Furniture was arranged so badly that getting up in middle of night I kept hitting my leg on corner of furniture and woke up with a large bruise on my leg. Food was good staff was friendly. Night restaurant manager was awful I have no idea how people work with him. Grounds are beautiful and ground floor is beautiful. Riding in the lift you feel like it's going to drop each time it stops. Much work is needed on the place.
What a stunning hotel and grounds. Unfortunately it was let down by our room which was extremely small and in dire need of some TLC. We spoke to reception, however, and were informed that they are due a refit. The photos you see of the rooms are the superior and deluxe rooms! We had a beautiful meal in their stunning restaurant, as was breakfast. Do not be put off going, just try and book one of the nicer rooms.
For the price of the room and the facilities available a very good hotel. The room was large, clean and well equipped. Staff were friendly, helfull and very welcoming. If you are looking for a base outside London, a room for a weekend or just some where to come and switch off and stay and excellent choice.
As we were attending a party close by, my wife booked DVSE, Location was great, setting, brilliant, first impressions entering the Hotel, this is stunning, then you enter the bedroom… nope, very poor. There was even dirty glasses and bottles left outside our room from the previous guests… For a start, no air-conditioning, yet they provide a dyson cool tower which is anything from cool, could have an air-conditioning unit for around the same cost. The room was drab, but fit… for purpose I suppose, nice bathroom that had been given some thought, other then the shower and taps had no pressure whatsoever, terrible… quite laughable really after seeing how nice the bathroom was. Following morning, breakfast. Dirty cutlery and crockery… and these were the cleaned ones? other then that, was ok. We returned to our room to pack and then saw how dirty the base sheets were on our bed, right across the bottom it appeared to have mould showing through… and to think we'd slept on them. Also, do be careful having a pivoting TV screen so close to the desk, if someone turns when standing up, the'll catch their face, worse still eyes on the corner of the TV screen, Plenty of other wall space. Which then leads me to… where is the small table and chairs that should sit in the room, the size of remaining dead space… that the Dyson sits within, where would you sit, drink or eat when requesting room service?
I went with a friend, with an offer to use the leisure facilities and afternoon tea. The member of staff in the leisure area wasn’t very welcoming and made us and some other guests uncomfortable. The pool area is all inside no access to the outside and it was a lovely day it would have been nice to relax in the sun and the sauna wasn’t working.
The afternoon tea was very nice and the staff in the dining area were very friendly.
Having visited other spa’s I wouldn’t recommend this one.
For age of building and large grounds, reasonably well kept. Had a nice stay. Little advice, whilst a lot of effort goes in to keep the huge grounds and building in good condition, do check on the basics in the room. Like shower head cleanliness, damaged plug socket etc. (235) These basics makes the difference and let down. Food and rest of property very nice.
We enjoyed the Hotel it's a stunning place. Golf course needs work, awful facilities in pro shop. Dinner was passable, breakfast cold. No fridge in our very lovely room, 3 bulbs not working and no magnifying mirror in room, very difficult if you wear glasses. On saying all this, we are booked in for a return, l wish we could have stayed longer. A piece of carpet was loose on a stair it was partially detached and still evident an hour later I caught my foot on it. Staff are lovely. Really looking forward to another visit. You must try it.
Stunning place and friendly service. Took some time to order room service as phone was broken and when we finally managed to get through to reception we had an old menu in the room so had to wait for the updated one to come. And we only got one towel between 2 of us. Other than that lovely.
Second time I've been here for a conference, working with the staff here is a dream, they put thought into our requests did everything we asked and generally made my life much easier. Especially Stefan who I didn't get to thank. Facilities are good, food is reasonable and it's cheaper than I expected. Water wasn't very hot in the rooms. No idea about the golf situation though.

Really lovely. There is no Spa (website misleading). Family room good size. Other rooms small. Swimming pool very nice. Needs costume spinner in changing room. Bar drinks basic but lovely decor throughout. I would go back.
Woefully overpriced. Thinks it is a luxury hotel when it is far from it. So disappointed with our stay. We thought we'd splash out a bit on a 'Deluxe room' room but the room was so basic I had to ask at reception if they'd put us in the wrong room, which they seemed to take exception to. We were promised there would be Gluten free options only to be told that they didn't have any so we ended up having to go out for dinner. The more senior members of staff looked stressed & didn't seem to want to be bothered but a couple of the more junior members of staff were friendly & did make an effort so well done them. The room was so warm it was hard to sleep and we were right above the room where there was a wedding party going on so as well as the banging music we also got woken up by everyone returning to their rooms in the middle of the night, with doors slamming shut it felt like we were in a Premier Inn! Used to be such a nice hotel. They asked for my feedback after we got home but they obviously weren't bothered with it as I got no reply. That was the underlining feeling we got from the hotel… Happy to take our money but not bothered if we enjoyed our stay. We won't be going back!
Damp room. Leaking roof with rain dripping in the room. No button on the toilet flusher. Washers need replacing in the bathroom sink. Water pressure so low in the shower it was hard work. Thread bare carpets and front door behind a pillar. The staff, ok. Polite but lack of customer care. Food, very average.
Hmm! What can I say. It was a journey into history, and modernity all at once. With corridors and tunnels swinging left, right (b) up and down, one cannot but be intrigued by this master piece. Very friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms and bedding, large conference rooms for meetings and sessions. A great Gulf opportunity.
The newly refurbished rooms, bar and restaurant are spectacular. Bedding and towels are clean and of good standard. Staff as always are attentive, professional and have a can do it attitude. I will recommend this hotel to everyone.
10 minutes to check in only one at reception why book on line and it takes longer to check in room like an oven no phone no guest services in room had to ring reception on my phone 10 minutes before anyone answered phone. Missed being able to go into swimming pool as it was to late I arrived at 6 45 now can't swim. Moved to another so called superior room cold no heating working had to have a heater room had a shower and wanted a bath man dealing with me was not helpful when I said the room menu wasn't so good it did say bar menu he said what do u want a 7 page menu rude can't wait to leave room also smells damp. De very u have let yourself down won't stay again.
Very cold rooms and it was an upgraded/renovated room. Wind coming in the windows all night. Apart from that, lovely stay, friendly staff and tasty food. :-)
Lovely location and grounds with free parking. Nice hotel with many period features. Good sized room equipped with a safe, iron board, iron and fridge. The room was clean and well presented as is the hotel generally. Friendly welcome and reception staff. Relaxing poolside area with plenty of seating and ambient music to aid relaxation. Sauna and steam room area is in need of a deep clean seeing the amount of dirt under the sauna benches made it difficult for me to relax. On the positive side both rooms were very hot — the steam room temperature was one of the best I have experienced. Evening meal was good. I was made a wonderful fruit punch on request. Restaurant was nicely decorated and a nice environment in which to dine. Breakfast the usual buffet with selection of breads, pastries, cereals, fruit, juices and fry up. I was made a lovely hot chocolate, again upon request, which came with a mint crisp. All in all a good stay.
My weekend stay at Devere Selsdon Estate has been a pleasurable experience from beginning to reluctant end! From the refurbished room overlooking the beautiful grounds, the excellent dinner and breakfast to the wonderful staff who provided an exemplary service. Thank you and well done for giving this amazing building the the attention it deserves.
Very nice hotel with very courteous and friendly people.
Beautiful historic building, well maintained and cared for. The room was very small Breakfast in a beautiful room Very good value for money.
Fine if you are with one of the big wedding parties looking to drink through the night but we were not and between 11pm and 3am were continuously woken up by people drunkenly staggering to their rooms. Perhaps the hotel could rethink their allocation of rooms for families with children? The hotel looks spectacular from the outside but could do with some internal modernisation, for example our room was roasting and the radiator didn't turn off! To top it off I was given the wrong bag when I collected my luggage. It should be a good hotel and the building has a lot of charm, I just think they fell short on the smaller things.
My stay at the De Vere hotel did not live up to expectations. The location is great, the staff are lovely and the food is delicious. However the hotel and room is very dated. There wasn't enough parking close to the hotel as many guests had parked over 2 spaces. Our room was ridiculously hot. We were on the lower ground floor so didn't feel comfortable leaving the windows open overnight. We asked to change rooms but there wasn't any available, but they provided us with a fan. This didn't help and we got very little sleep. Also the room wasn't as clean as I would expect for a 4 star hotel. Overall it was a poor stay and we will not be returning. The rating of 2 stars is for the staff and food.
Fantastic setting, reasonably priced but rooms are a little tired and would benefit from an update. Leisure facilities also run down, lots of gym equipment out of order, changing areas and pool areas desperate for a steam clean. Staff friendly, this place could be amazing with a little investment. Tasty breakfast, lovely views/grounds.
Having previously stayed at 3 De Vere hotels, both of which were of immaculate standard, this hotel falls short of the usual spec. It is a tad outdated both externally and internally and the rooms and most facilities could do with a refurbishment. The pool facility is however nice touch although it's adjoining facilities could do with a spruce too. The grounds are nice and well kept and there is loads of options for people who enjoy sports such as golf, tennis and squash. Not sure if I would stay here again or recommend it to others but I think it's worth a visit at least once.
Came here for a birthday treat which included spa access, 55min treatment, lunch with robe and towels included. Had a lovely day, very relaxing, pool temp very warm, decent sized sauna and steam room plus ample deck chairs situated around the pool. There is also a gym on site. The grounds are beautiful and we'll maintained. Highly recommended and I actually want to visit again and take my mum.
Beautiful setting in stunning grounds. This visit was for a wedding venue which was superb but I've also attended the spa for a day previously. Hotel, Golf Grounds, Eatery, Bar, Spa! It has it all and worth a visit.
An excellent up market hotel, lovely well kept gardens, spotless spacious bedrooms. I don't know why people have gave bad reviews. In my opinion this should be a five star hotel. The leisure centre is fantastic with a great steam room and sauna and Jacuzzi. The staff are very friendly and approachable. I have been out for an hour and the cleaners been and made up the beds and had a clean round and once again the bedroom is spotless. This is the first time I have stayed here but it definitely will not be the last. Well done to all the staff who work here in making this a superb hotel.
Stayed for a golf event, suite was nothing special, so don't bother upgrading. The whole building needs refurbishing, although some works are currently going on. Evening meal was mediocre. Breakfast was not much better. Fire alarm at 4.30am didn't help, lack of organisation during this did not distill confidence in staff either. The walls between rooms are thin, you can hear everything, even casual conversations. Would I stay again… No I would rather go to a holiday inn and then taxi to the golf course. It would be cheaper and breakfast would be better.
Slightly run down decor, only a double bed. Food at the restaurant was Ok but nothing more. Spa and grounds are really nice, so the hotel itself just needs updating.
Very poor customer service from the front desk staff. Room and morning waiting staff made up for this but not worth the cost. This room had been booked quite a while ago for a wedding event we (and several others) were attending. When the booking was orginally made we were advised that we could not pay in advance but would have to pay on check out. We called to confirm booking earlier this week and were informed that my card detail were held for a room not under my name and completely the wrong room type. This booking was amended to the correct booking details and room type. On arrival staff were very rude when we asked if we could check in early or if there might have been somewhere to leave our bags as we were attending a wedding and didn't want to leave them in the car. After the wedding finished and we came to check in (at 23:30) there was a large queue which was not being managed sufficiently. Although there were 2 members of staff on the front desk only one appeared to be checking guests in while the other watched. Due to the original mistake with the rooms we were informed that there were no card details on the booking and we would need to make a payment immediately before we would be given our keys. Other guests (who were friends of ours and had also had issues with their booking and card details being under the wrong name and room type) checked in shortly after and were told that they could not pay till the morning.
For the price it is 5 star! I really hate it when people pay last minute bargain rates and then moan when the place is clearly a 'work in progress and undergoing refurbishment. Give the staff a break folks, they do their utmost and pound for pound it's brilliant. I have another event with 40+ rooms there this weekend and it will be generally very good all round.
Awful spa day, the spa is filthy & antiquated, the staff are rude especially in the bar where you get your meal, there is nothing glamorous or relaxing about this place, it's more like a local authority leisure centre with kids diving, jumping & screaming,, the women's changing room is awful & filthy and the stench in there nearly made me sick.
The pool was filthy with hair & other things floating in it, the jacuzzi is so old you have to stand up & wave your arms to get a sensor going to start the bubbles, the staff were unfriendly & very unwelcoming.
Had a miserable day here de vets should be ashamed of themselves & my previous high opinion of de verse has now completely gone, do not go I urge everyone not to go you might catch something very nasty from this filthy place, I have felt unwell all day today!

Proper s***hole. It's a dated 3* hotel. Look at my pic of the room I had. Seriously a double room that was more like a rathole, no air con, dated, broken tiles in the bathroom and wallpaper that is falling apart. You better off staying at a hostel. Breakfast is awful. Pretty much everything was disappointing.
Staff unhelpful (popped in to ask about wedding venue hire). The appearance of the hotel has been altered but not for the better, the concrete canopy/awning over the entrance is disgusting and not in-keeping with the period of the hotel itself. Inside, it feels run down and untidy. The view out the back of the hotel over the golf course is nice, however I think that is the only redeeming feature at the moment. The whole place feels like it needs renovating, but done properly to keep the period feel of the original hotel.
Played golf here. Nice course, quite hilly and plenty of interest. Hotel is very tired and seems dirty in places, toilets were a disgrace. Would never stay at the hotel or eat there but would probably return to the golf course.
Below Par! Stayed here for a one night stay with my daughter 16th April 2016. Receptionist was rude on arrival, the room was awful, Creased up carpets that we stubbed our toes on, broken window that rattled and noisy heating. The buffet dinner was cold by the time we went for dinner (9pm) We had to ask for it to be changed or replenished. Went to the bar and a group of men who claimed to have been in the bar since 2pm was extremely drunk, loud and ended up fighting. All in all not the weekend of relaxation we was planning on. Room 147 was horrible!
Nice view. However, the hotel itself is quiet isolated from everything surrounding it. The rooms vary in size but are reasonable. Wi-Fi is free but not available in all rooms.
Lovley location, with nice big rooms amazing value for money, pool is always nice and calm with a steam room and sauna to go with it oh I almost forgot about the jacuzzi which I spent most of my day in. I was there with work and had to accommodate a Luton van and a smaller van which the car park can easily fit in as its huge, the area is brilliant there's a sainburys next door and a few shops pubs and takeaways down the road in Selsdon, the only thing I could really pick fault at is the fact of the TV only having 6 basic channels which I think is me being picky, staff exceptional always wanting to help. And its only an hours drive from central London soon brilliant place to stay defiantly be going back!
Took our mum for afternoon tea today, and we all loved it! really good value afternoon tea — so many delicious cakes we couldn't finish it (and they provided us with a container to take the left overs home), lovely service and friendly staff, and really beautiful grounds. Would recommend it for an afternoon treat we're going back for a spa day there! ❤❤❤❤
Food was great, service slow and staff were rude. Gym equipment mostly broken, jacuzzi was ice cold. Room small but clean. Wifi great throughout.
The 1st room we checked into was not the type of room we paid for but due to the hotel being fully booked they couldn't/wouldn't move us. Add insult to injury the sheets were dirty when we went to get into bed. They moved us for our 2nd night to a room type we paid for. However the sheets in this room were also dirty and there were also 2 half drunk pint of beer still sitting on the window seal. The hotel move us again and the room was nice. The reason why I gave it 2 star over the one it deserves is that the duty manager was amazing is trying to sort out the issues with the cleaning staff and making sure we was looked after.
The grounds of the hotel where beautiful and the staff amazing. Unfortunately the room it's self was small very small. The bathroom had signs of mould on the ceiling and the showerhead dripped all the time. The bar was really nice and cozy and stayed open really late. The only thing letting it down was our room.
A good welcome by friendly reception staff, given room early so we can get unpacked and play golf, good size room, great golf course, got upgraded to Al a Carte menu for evening dinner at no extra cost, All in all a great 2 day break at a great price, Well done to all the staff that looked after us, will definately stay again!
Very slow reception — check in 25 min! Room was a disaster: 1. TV round 20 years old. 2. No freeview 3. Only 5 channels. 4. Very limited facilities /sugar & milk for one cofee only / 5. Room was dirty, tele never cleaned, very old fashion.
I havent even got there yet and im worried lol… I have read all the reviews and they are worrying… im staying there this week so im prying my experience is not as bad… god help me.
Does not keep track of their bookings. Evening staff is not very pleasant to deal with. They are not helpful at all. Make sure you come dressed up when you check in or you might be turned away. Booked a room and paid online at 7:00pm and arrived 3 hours later as London traffic is a nightmare. Manager and receptionist would not check us in to the hotel because the confirmation was not at their hotel. I showed them my receipt and they even spoke with the online booking site on the phone. They told the booking site that they have no fax machine access after 5:30pm so they cannot confirm. Why are they still posting the room up for pre-pay on sites like Priceline, Trivago, and Hotwire if they can't even verify after 5:30pm? Isn't a call from the booking site and a copy of a receipt good enough to show proof of purchase. They offered no help and pretty much said to us "figure it out with the booking agency on your own. " To get another hotel in London is very difficult especially after 10:00pm. We wasted 2 hours trying to find an available room. They did not even offer to sell us an empty room which they obviously had available as they were still selling them for that evening on all the popular booking websites. I think it really came down to they looked at my wife and I and they did not want us to stay there. Although the decor is a pretty dated, they think they are an upscale hotel.
When we arrived at the counter the receptionist could not find our booking confirmation. They don't keep track of their bookings! I showed her a copy of the pre-paid receipt and she said it was no where in their system. She then proceeded to rudely tell me to call the travel agency where I booked the hotel and didn't even offer to let me use their phone. Hotwire called them with the confirmation and their manager came out and said that they have no access to their fax machine after 5:30pm so they had no way of confirming the booking. What front office of a large hotel has no access to their fax machine after 5:30pm? I heard the manager get rude on the phone with Hotwire. Although we had the receipt and Hotwire called them and said they faxed the pre-paid confirmation they offered no assistance to help us at 10pm at night. The manager and staff ignored us while we tried to sort this out over an hour with Hotwire and their hotel. The staff probably saw us come into their "golf club" hotel looking tired worn with my back pack and decided we were not worthy of great customer service. During this Europe trip, I stayed in nearly 20 different hotels, I have never felt so uncomfortable and rejected by a hotel staff. Most hotels would offer to book you at their normal rate until they got their confirmation in the morning. Especially a guest who is arriving at 10pm and has no option. They clearly thought we were unworthy of staying in their property.
I haven't even got to this hotel yet and I'm not happy. Tried to call to confirm my reservation today and after I went through the 4th, completely confusing menu (they seem to have several company names), I gave up! Update: Arrived at the Hotel. Either they have an incredibly convoluted check-in system or their staff are just incompetent but I had to wait ages at the reception desk. There don't appear to be any lifts, had to lug my suitcase up several lots of stairs. The room was like a cell, in fact jail cells are probably bigger! It was dirty, smelly and just generally falling apart. Broken tiles in the bathroom, mouldy, nasty single pane, Crittall window made my skin crawl. No mirror near the hair dryer. Huge, old fashioned TV, I didn't even try it! I was down there for a wedding (not in the Hotel thank God! ) and I ended up leaving the wedding early so I could make the drive home to Yorkshire and arrive at a reasonable hour (11pm) rather than face another night in the Hotel even thought I had already paid for it. I feel like I need to disinfectant myself! A shame, because the building and grounds are beautiful.
From arrival to departing we had a unhappy experience. All staff where unfriendly and miserable. Our standard rooms needed an upgrade. The television was from the 1980's. Not enough pillows or towels. We could not have a shower due to not having any water (just a drip) and this was in both rooms that we had booked. When we complained they said they would look into it (it never happened). Our evening meal was three courses but we were sad to find out it was a self service buffet. The food was cold and raw. The food was awful, the staff never checked it, it looked like it had been sat there for hours. I would not of served a dog that food. The bar prices where amazingly high, mostly a round of drinks for 4 people are around £25, we paid for a sandwich £10 and a large bottle of water was £4. I found one friendly member of staff who told me how she was embarrased to work there and I should see the food they serve them (worse than ours). I did complain about the whole experience and was told a manager would speak to me, I'm still waiting. The grounds and the golf coarse are the only good thing about this hotel.
We chose Selsdon Park to host our event. An absolute travesty. Room bookings weren't kept track of. Some of our guests found their luggage moved and their room usurped within two hours of arriving. Complimentary hampers we had provided and assembled weren't distributed appropriately and many went missing. After the event a number of our guests were quite reasonably having a drink in their room. The night manager — Marcus, who has been mentioned before in this thread — instead of politely asking them to keep the noise down or move elsewhere (the 24-hour bar that we had been promised, for example, which had been closed at 2am) stormed into the room flashing a torch and was incredibly discourteous to our guests, telling them to 'go to bed'. He was a horrible little man with a short fuse and even less diplomacy. The catalogue of errors is considerably more extensive. In short, Fawlty Towers.
I was on a corporate event. Terrible customer service — a Manager on reception named Marcus on Saturday 13th June at about midnight — I asked a simple question regarding my colleague leaving their card with him as I didn't need to prior to this, and his response was: "you don't tell me how to do my job, you are rude and are not staying here or I call the Police". As you can imagine I was very shocked after asking a simple question in what I and my colleagues thought was a polite way. He continued to raise his voice. He obviously doesn't enjoy his job as the customer service I received from him was horrible, being threatened to have the police called for clarifying one thing in a calm manner.
Rooms in the expressed the corner of the hotel were only one night there, perhaps because we only had booked a Standard without Extras.
The spa facilities and the food was quite nice. Service and overall conduction of the hotel seriously lacked much needed attention. You find yourself expecting so much from looking at the exterior of this beautiful building, but is a little bit of a let down with the attention to detail inside. You can tell that they are trying to save money on labour withing his hotel as the hygiene and overall service suffers. Overall a pleasant stay for they money in which they ask.
Great reception experience, friendly staff. Quite a few steps to the room but warm, clean, bright and cosy. Large bar area with lots of cosy seats. Wifi only free for 1 hour. 1 Egg sandwich to your room will cost you £11.25 or a 12inch vegetable pizza for £17.50 bit excessive. Would I visit again, Yes. You have a good selection of nearby local shops and open space to walk.
Saturday 7th at the Selsdon Park Hotel — my golden jubilee event. What an AWESOME DAY! It was indeed a memorable day. A big thanks to the hotel for the excellent service on the day. The waiters were so supportive, well mannered and faultless. The Banqueting Manager for the day, Jan Sonneveld was the best ensuring everything went perfect and of course kudos to the Chef. We all really enjoyed the food. A huge thanks and appreciation to Emma Ellis Sales and Marketing Executive for receiving us so well and being consistent throughout. These are wonderful faces for the hotel. Aaah and the room was also very comfortable. Slept like a baby. I would definitely recommend the Hotel.
Very nice but if you're in the older part you might have a lot of steps to manage.
Beautiful hotel, amazing view! Makes you feel like you are in the countryside :).
Worst hotel I have been to. Even hotels in some of the poorest African countries I have visited had a better service than Selsdon Park Hotel. Very poor and disappointing considering the price and the supposed quality one should be getting. My wife and I arrived at the hotel on our wedding night, having already booked a room online. The receptionist was adamant and augmentative that we hadn’t booked a room. Besides, the quote we had online was not the quote we were given. We had a quote of about £180 online, and at the hotel, we were being quoted over £250 for one night. It took over 15 minutes of back and forth conversations until my wife checked the details on her phone as a confirmation of the rate we received. We were given the card for our room, and as we got to the door of the room, the card was not working. I had to leave my newly wedded wife at the door and walk back to reception to get it sorted. Once sorted I walked back to the door of the room. Upon entering into the room, the shower was broken. There was no air conditioning in the room, bearing in mind this was a very hot evening. The hotel did not even have a fan for us; in this state, it could have been better to spend our wedding night in our room at home. We left the room and went back to the reception where we were given another room to stay. This room was just like the first, it had no aircon, no fan and the shower, although was working cannot be regulated. My wife and I were too tired to complain.
Last time I visited Selsdon Park in the late 1990's it was cosy, stylish and very friendly. My husband and I stayed there recently and found it to be run down, staff didn't seem to care for customer needs first, food sub standard and bar just like a sports bar with people walking in and out in bath robes going to the Spa — not a nice friendly cosy bar to meet up with people. There should be at least two bars for choice in a place this size. We checked out on the Saturday and moved to the Hilton, Croydon — there was a totally different atmosphere — buzzing, friendly, easy to get served, rooms large bright and comfortable and not run down! We won't be going back to Selsdon Park in the near future.
I booked up Selsdon Park Hotel as a surprise birthday treat for my mums birthday on the 5th of April 2014. We decided to go down and enjoy the indoor pool almost straight away. We left the pool to go into the sauna where we discovered a huge gash on my knee and blood that had dripped all the way from the pool. At first there was concern as to whether I would have to go to A&E as it appeared there was something still in there. It was clear there must have been something sharp and dangerous in the pool, however the pool was not closed putting risk to others. The cut was so deep that it reopened whilst I was asleep at night and bled all over the sheets. Since then I have been in contact with the manager who has failed to respond in any meaningful way using obvious delaying tactics. It was meant to be a relaxing and special weekend for my mum but she found the whole event very distressing. I am severely disappointed with the lack of response I have received from the management team and would warn others from visiting.
I visited the Selsdon Park hotel on July 12th for our company away day. Upon arrival, I went to the reception and explained I was a coeliac. I asked if I could have some bacon on a plate on its own as I couldn't eat bread. I was given a roll that I was assured by two staff was gluten free but it tasted too good so I went out to reception and I insisted on having it checked in the kitchen. The chef had made a mistake and it was a normal bread roll. I explained that I was going to be extremely sick as a result. I don't think that the staff realise the significance of a gluten attack. I I was sick for three days afterwards. I did receive gluten free food for lunch but my day and weekend was ruined. Upon leaving the manager asked me to write with my name and address so they could "make a gesture". I did receive an apology but I again feel that the seriousness of the situation was ignored. It is very disheartening not to be able to trust restaurant food and I feel that the customer service post incident leaves a lot to be desired.

Stayed there for a wedding on 10/11 Sept.
Helpful staff.
Big room but only chairs to sit on, a sofa would have been nice. I found the room very hot.
Plentiful hot water. Bath very high to step out of. Towel rail on continually.
Found the corridors claustrophobic.
Breakfast ok
Grounds magnificent.
Wedding was great all the family there after such a long time.
I understand the hotel was not fully open.
