I only had one night there but it was lovely. The single room was perfect with a view over the Torridge, the welcome from the lady on reception was brilliant. A nice night away😀😀

We have just spent 4 nights at this lovely hotel. The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
We were thrilled with our room on the top floor overlooking the river. Spotlessly clean. The food is OUTSTANDING, and we spent a lot of time on the bar, having pre and post dinner cocktails. Breakfast was fabulous with a large choice on the menu.
Westward Ho beach is very near. Nice sand and great for children.
We will definitely be back.

We booked in for the Valentines Evening and couldn’t have asked for anything more, we were treated with a glass of Prosecco and the food was absolutely divine… The company wasn’t too bad either the other half did well a lovely evening Thank you.

I phoned for a very last minute reservation for a table of 6. More than accommodating for 2 of the 6 who were dairy and meat free. The food was absolutely wonderful and will definitely be going back! friendly staff who also enjoyed a laugh/joke. Well done The Royal Hotel!

Had the best carvery ever yesterday. A fantastic choice of potatoes and veg. I went for the nut roast which was delicious and came with the most amazing gravy. A great selection of puddings too; all very well presented. Excellent service from very friendly staff.

Me and my family stay here regularly throughout the year, as I have family and friends who live locally. We are always made to feel very welcome. The staff are lovely and always greet you with a smile and a chat. Look forward to staying over the summer holidays.

Nothing expensive food walls like paper could hear the loud people in he next room most of the night.

I didn't book for the carvery today until late Friday evening. The receptionist was extremely helpful and managed to book me a table for 18 for 2pm today for my daughter's Birthday. There was so much room at our table and the food was absolutely delicious, we all agreed the best carvery in town by far. The waiting staff were outstanding and very helpful. We would all definitely recommend this for your Sunday lunch. Well done all and thank you.

Attended a wedding here and it's what you'd expect from a Brends Hotel. Staff were helpful and put what the bridal party wanted together very well. Food was lovely but could of done with more roast spuds! Haha. Haven't stayed here but saw the honeymoon suite, which is amazing and huge. Other rooms are standard but comfortable.

Dogs allowed but certainly not welcomed. Uncomfortable bed with very heavy oversized duvet. Staff quite friendly.

Now as coffee shops go this place is reasonable. Don't expect a gushing welcome and don't expect to be dazzled by their cakes. However, as far as the coffee and tea goes then it's not bad. Would I recommend you go there? We'll put it this way, it's better than Costas but not by a lot. However it is one of the better placed to visit in the town.

Great venue, was able to easily cater for 20 of us for a family meal. Will definitely visit again.

I haven't stayed overnight but family have, there were no complaints and bar service was better than expected.

We are visiting friends locally and booked a table so we could all enjoy the excellent Sunday evening carvery. Beef was melt in your mouth and the range of vegetables was impressive.

Went here for a wedding recently. Very nicely decorated, high price for drinks but friendly staff and great bar selection. Tables were set up well with room for a dance floor, room designed well for a wedding. DJ away from drunken party goers and food at opposite end of room towards bar. Clever technique.

The majority of the staff were kind and helpful. Unfortunately on arrival there was a receptionist that was less than helpful and who was quite rude.

Nice staff and excellent food, double glazing & air con in bedrooms would improve things, but overall it is a great place to explore Devon.

A1 accommodation easy check in lovely views would recommend this hotel if your in the area.

I haven't been any were eles that comes close to this wonderful carvery spot on can't fault the food ore staff very professional.

My partner and I stayed overnight as had a works function in the area. All staff were friendly and efficient special mention to the receptionist who went out of her way to accommodate us. The room was large beautifully decorated and furnished with probably the best bed I have ever slept in!. Congratulations on good housekeeping. I would recommend from arrival to departure.

Fantastic food and wonderful staff. They made our Valentine's evening a great occasion.

It's a shame this hotel is being run unprofessionaly. Staff really need to take note of what is required, be honest with their offerings and start to communicate in the proper manner. In our case… a wedding. The shortcomings were too numerous to mention both for us and for a guest too. This venue is no more than 5 minutes from our home but we won't be patronising it in the future.

The location is very close to the tarka diner the rooms are very clean and comfortable and the service was excellent.

Got married here on the 2nd December, stayed for 2 nights and could not fault it, lovely hotel with lots of character food was great and exceeded expectations, staff were exellent and nothing was ever to much trouble, had the best day ever, a great place to get married and will definitely recommend. Pleasant hotel & staff but food left lot to be desired and were told they wouldn't give us our luggage until Bill was paid.

Benevolence lodge held our ladies night. Function well organized and the staff couldn't do enough to make it a resounding success.

After previously booking. We were not listed in the restaurant The wine list took an eternity to arrive and the waitress brought a glass of wine instead of a bottle Training is needed. Training saves money in the long run Food excellent setting excellent Service needs to step up to the standard Saying that I will return.

To be honest I found the room comfy and well maintained and had a good night's sleep. I made the mistake of going to the restaurant and that was pretty poor unfortunately. I was one of four people in the restaurant and ordered lemonade as soon as I sat down 30mins later I had to find someone to ask as it never appeared. I waited nearly an hour for food and I'd only ordered a main. Very poor service when I was 25% of the customers in the restaurant! I'd stay again but eat elsewhere to be honest if they'd had said it'd be nearly an hour for the main I'd have headed in to town.

Went on our annual Bowls trip and stopped at the Royal in Bideford. The accommodation and food were very good. Would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Nice hotel, comfy stylish rooms Staff could be more helpful at breakfast as once food is served they don't ask if food is ok or you need anything else More facilities in hotel would be nice.

Spent the weekend at this hotel. Disappointed with the room as inspite of a aircon machine thing, the room was above the kitchen which stunk the room out with old cooking oil smells — not something you want at 7 am! You really need to sort your kitchen filters. We used the lift which smelt of damp and was quite disgusting. We were also disappointed that the shower was just a bath mixer tap put on the wall with a shower riser rail and no way to control the water temperature. Certainly not the room of choice if we visit again.

Very clean room had all things needed. Well mannered staff. Lovely location over looking the river.

I only popped in for a drink with a friend but from what I experienced the staff are friendly and professional, and the whole place is clean, tidy and has a nice atmosphere.

We stayed at the Royal Hotel for 7 nights from the 3rd to the 10th of July 2017 in room 212. Throughout, the staff were lovely, very smiley and seemed genuinely happy to help. In particular we felt that Margaret was outstanding and is an absolute credit to the business. The hotel itself is well presented, the bar and restaurant particularly although the rooms could do with some updating. The primary car park is small and awkward when people who aren't capable of parking take more doorman they should but in told there is a secondary one just up the hill. We are. At the bar one night which was perfectly fine but not outstanding. Breakfast every day was very good with all staff seeming happy and alert for the time of morning although they were a bit slow with tea and toast some days even when we were the only ones there. All in a perfectly good hotel and a good base for travelling to local places. I'd stay again.

An average of 4 stars resulting from many 5 stars but a few 1s and 2s. A grand old building full of character and charm, the dining room was very well presented, room was clean and well kept, breakfast food of really good quality — all 5 stars but… the TV signal was awful, very few channels accessible and they had broken digital picture and sound, breakfast is not served until 7:30 but even then was late, staff and food not ready and I returned one day to find my room door not locked, left ajar by the house keeper I assume. In summary contrasting…

Lovely meal, staff are spot on, polite and efficient. Desserts were incredible! Definitely the best carvery we've had in and around Bideford and Barnstaple.

Staff very pleasant and accommodating. Professional throughout. Classic building well decorated inside.

My one gripe. I go to slimming world so chose all the veg that had no sauces over them, and no potatoes or parsnip cos they were roasted or covered in butter. So I had what I thought were safe options… cabbage, peas and carrots mix, green beans red cabbage and ratatouille (not sure of spelling). But when I started eating it discovered cabbage was covered in butter! And I think some of the others.
Could you please do some just plain veg that we who are on strict diets can eat without worry.
Perhaps you could have little signs saying free from fat!

Stayed in the Kingsley bedroom, beautiful room with excellent views over the river torridge. The ceiling is remarkable with fantastic decor, modern bathroom and comfortably spacious. Service was remarkable and the room and hotel was exceptionally neat and tidy. 3 star hotel, 5 star service.

The staff were all happy to help, very friendly and always professional, the food was very nice, we had a carvery which had plenty of good meat and a good amount of veg etc. To choose from. Although we left late, we didn't feel like we were rushed at all and enjoyed the whole experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Royal at the end of May 2009, for five nights. Having read the previously poor reviews of this hotel we were pleasantly surprised by the reception we received, the accomodation, and the helpfulness and affabile nature of all the staff. They were excellent. The accommodation was above average, especially when one considers that this hotel is over 100 years old. The food was exceptional, although some more vegetables would have been appreciated. When extra were requested they were served promptly and with good grace. The house staff ensured that our room was clean and tidy, a bit too tidy for our liking, but that is their job. The only negative point is that the views from the windows are poor, but that is not why you stay in a town centre hotel! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to others, and will probably return.
