The Devonshire Arms Inn

A fabulous welcoming restaurant which accommodated myself along with my husband, daughter, son in law and two grandchildren not forgetting Bailey the dog. A warm welcome upon arrival lovely spacious table, the Sunday lunch cooked to perfection served by a very helpful waitress. We visited on Sunday 14th november having been to Chatsworth Christmas Market. Hopefully we will visit again in January and stay over. Many thanks to all the team, we will be back.

Had a lovely 3 night stay. Staff were so helpful. Especially with the wine menu! Food was superb. Staff worked very hard especially as they were short staffed. Will definitely recommend. Thank you.

You can't fault the food but the service from some of the staff is not what it should be sat 1.30 minutes before we got someone to take our order & that was after we spoke to one of the other staff who could not have been more helpful to us
but the food was great.

Really lovely place, right by Chatsworth. I came for a meal alone with my dog and the whole experience was fantastic, the food is amazing and good value and the drinks are cheap. It is very dog friendly which usually means you compromise in quality of food and the pub but it wasn't like that here. I will definitely be visiting again.

We had a fantastic stay great for walking the dog into chatsworth everyday staff were really friendly and food was great also will definitely be going back again.

Food and relaxing atmosphere are incredible. Staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. Haven’t been there for about 5 months and they still remembered us. Tonight had a light meal between the three of us and each item was wonderful. It was a great value for the money. We will be back.

Waited almost an hour for food, no apology, terrible attitude from the waitress, no manager available to complain to, food was ok though — no rush to return.

Had an amazing two nights here staff couldn’t do enough for you — so dog friendly even brought sausages on the second morning for the the Sunday dinner was amazing the best had in a long time — keep up the good work thank you.

Traditional country theme, with a modern twist. Very relaxed, casual setting, friendly and obliging staff, both dog and child friendly. I haven't eaten here, but wouldn't hesitate to give it a try.

Love this place nice atmosphere good beers/wines. So I'm disappointed to score this place down… the food was poor and expensive I'm sure it was a one off or I hope so.

A very disappointing evening. My husband and I booked a meal for two. We arrived in good time and bought a drink while we waited and waited and waited for a menu. Eventually I had to ask for one wth no apology given and was told our order would be taken shortly. 3/4 of an hour later and another drink, which we had to go the bar for, we were still waiting. After an hour we gave up and left. They admitted they were under staffed — one waitress for bar and restaurant and were also short staffed in the kitchen. I’m not being funny but it was August — peak holiday time and due to its popularity were advised to book, which we did and they have rooms. Surely to goodness they must know approximately how many staff they would need judging by rooms taken and previous experience. Will not be returning.

Only had a drink and snack for lunch but thought the staff were very friendly which gave the pub a good atmosphere. The pub has very nice decor with a range of comfy seats to bar stool tables. Also, dog friendly.

I must have called 25 B&B's recently to find a room for this weekend just gone. Thankfully, The Devonshire Arms had two rooms available for my wife and I and my Mum and from first entering the building to leaving the building was such a great experience! Customer service, food and drinks were all exceeding expectations. The rooms are clean just what you need. I would definitely return when back in the Peak District!

Came late on a Sunday for a roast. Friendly service and really good food!

We were a group of 19. It was wonderful food and a great atmosphere. The staff was really nice, helpful and prompt. Would definitely eat here again.

Stopped off for a quick bite after a long journey and the food was lovely, staff were courteous, however service was a little bit slow. All in all, lovely place and will be back again when I'm not in a rush!

Very disappointed. Was looking forward to a lovely meal at the Devonshire Arms after our day at Chatsworth but was greeted by indifferent staff when we arrived. We had booked at lunch time for 8.30 because we had been told it was very busy but on arrival the dinning room was only a third to a half full. We were placed in the bar area which was fine but by 8.55 no one had taken our order. Having stopped a waitress she reluctantly agreed to take our order. By 9.30 no one had come over to check if we were waiting etc. We decided to pay our drink bill and left. There was a sort of apology but no explanation and no suggestion of chasing our food up. By this time it was too late to get a meal at our hotel. Though a terrible end to our lovely day it did not ruin our first visit to Baslow.

This was amazing I'll never forget it! The food was great and me and my boyfriend's moods were great. Good service helped us relax and drink in the time (and booze) together. Left us completely at ease and ready to continue the night in the lovely bedroom.

Quite pricey, I had the lamb kebab, very odd concept of it hanging, meaning you gwt around 4 cubes ofl lamb. Was still hungary afterwards.

Lovely place to eat drink and sleep! Dog friendly! Staff very friendly. Rooms very clean and with usual facilities! Only negative points is that I was constantly woken by noise of fan when other resident's/guest would use bathroom. (me and my wife stayed in room 6) Can be a pain to park in carpark! Seems to be always busy! Would definitely stay again thou!

A pub set up to serve diners and tourists although as a local I do feel comfortable going in this pub just for a pint, most of the time. I can't comment on food as I've never had any. The pub overall is much better than the Wheatsheaf across the road but doesn't have the great garden that its rival has. It loses out to Rowleys on beer quality but does have three or four local ales that are very drinkable.

Very nice atmosphere and cosily decorated. Friendly and prompt service. Free parking available. Our food was generally good, but the steak was very chewy, didn't feel like good quality meat.

Overall a mediocre experience due to a couple of things. My girlfriend and I had to wait for our tables to be cleared for what seemed like a long time considering that staff were stood talking to one another. I also received my drink in a pint glass that had a chip out of the rim and a crack that travelled half way down the glass. I can't help but feel this could have been avoided if the barman were paying better attention. To the staffs credit, once I noticed the crack they replaced the drink immediately. The food itself was ok although my girlfriend felt hers came out slightly cool.

Lovely pub. Great food (I had the steak and onion baguette! ) which was the perfect amount for aate lunch after a nice walk round Chatsworth. Very welcoming establishment with excellent staff. Highly recommended.

Had a fabulous Sunday roast. The restauarant was packed but the service was still good. Went with a large group of friends and we had 4 children under 1, there were plenty of high chairs and a massive table to accommodate us. Would definitely recommend to all and will be back.

A good range of ale in please surrounding. Don't forget to book your car into the car park on thier automated system. Dog friendly rooms available to. But hey I'll look forward to reading your comments when you have stayed or just popped in for a beer.

Very impressed overall, despite initial reservations — based on the somewhat defensive-at-times website — that this might not be the friendliest of places. We were warmly greeted, quickly checked in and shown to our rooms by duty manager Chris, who gave the impression that nothing could be too much trouble. Dinner in the restaurant was very enjoyable, the room very comfortable (especially with its impressive and luxurious four-poster bed) and amenities good. Breakfast the next morning was superb (buffet of toast/cereals plus choice of hot dish included in the room rate — the full English couldn't be faulted) and the bar had a good selection of wines, beers and spirits especially craft gins & tonics. We were kindly allowed to leave our car in the car park the next day while we visited nearby Chatsworth — for which The Devonshire Arms could not be more conveniently located, in the pretty village of Baslow on the edge of Chatsworth Park. Given the age of the building it was inevitable perhaps that floorboards in the bedroom (room 6) were rather creaky, as was the bed, but this did not in any way diminish the comfort of my stay — others might find it a problem if staying longer than one night. TV channels were a very basic package so anyone seeking entertainment might want to bring a book — or enjoy chatting to the very friendly staff and locals in the busy pub downstairs. Highly recommended, I would definitely stay here again.

Dropped in for a drink. Nice ambience spoilt by indifferent staff and unruly dog barking at every one walking past. Staff spent more time on petting the dog than engagement with customers. Glad I didn't dine here as there could be hygiene issues.

Good place to stay, breakfast and evening meals are good as is the beer. Rooms comfortable and staff friendly. Be aware this hotel is close to a busy main road.

Nice popular pub on the edge of Chatsworth park dogs are allowed in the bar area which is a nice touch especially after a long walk lovely cosy fire in the colder months nice bar food theres also a restaurant service available for more formal dinning.

Above everything else, the people working here are very, very friendly. The children's corner is really lovely and a rare find in a pub. The beer was yummy and food also. It isn't cheap but worth a visit, decor is beautiful.

Only went for an after work pint or two. Service at the bar was friendly. Outside area was nice. Beer was slightly over priced considering we went to another pub previously that was about 5 minutes away and was charged around £2 less. All considered, a good expwrience.

Really enjoyed our Sunday lunch here. Well designed seating area accommodating wide range of party sizes. Food was tasty, well cooked and we'll presented. Most staff were friendly and helpful.

First time in over 12 years that we visited and it was a nice surprise. Friendly and polite staff in a lovely setting. The food was nice — the chips were to die for, the best I've tasted in a long while. Two of us had the beef burger, one had the pie and our fuss pot son had the cheese sandwich with a side of fries. All really nice. The food took a while to come — blaming it on the burgers! I don't think so but we were in no rush. All in all a nice lovely meal. Would recommend and it welcomes dogs too.

Bit disappointed Sunday lunch only apart from sandwiches 3 choices only served with roast potatoes! (frozen) and hard, waited over a hour from ordering 3 people on table had Sunday roasts but we're given only one portion of vegetables between them table at the side of us had 2 people they got the same other table had 1 person and yes he got same amount too! Asked for extra portions but never arrived and very expensive we eat all over peaks and this was most disappointing. Lovely pub tho and glass of wine was lovely.

Well designed decor to make a warm welcoming pub atmosphere. We popped in New Years Eve for a birthday lunch treat, and as you'd expect it was busy with hikers (dog friendly too) and odd local (as ourselves) Food it's great (home made taste and feel), plentiful and well priced (3 mains 3 drinks = £43) And niggle I had was the service on the day, due to most of the staff and owners (I believe) too busy decorating the venue in a Alice in wonderland theme for new years party. Hence only 2 waiting staff running around and sometimes forgetting drink orders and entire tables.

Stayed one night in early September. The room was clean and had everything we needed. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. Good food especially the breakfast, where there was a wide choice of cooked dishes. The only negative is that the dining room is a space with little atmosphere — architect's fault, not the hotel's. Would recommend for a stopover to visit Chatsworth and Haddon Hall as very conveniently situated.

Great pub with brilliant Atmosphere. Allows dogs. Let down slightly by small portions if you choose the expensive dishes.

Went there for Sunday lunch and never had a worse experience. The waitress came over after 2 mins of sitting down to get an order and explained we just got there. She then came back 3 times within the space of 10minutes to take an order yet we hadn't settled let a lone looked at the menu and each time she came over she went off in a semi huff as though we were intruding on her time. The pub wasn't busy. Explained my partner doesn't each meat so the waitress said could do veggies for him and explained he doesn't eat what they had for their veggies. Paid just over £8 for 3-6 potatoes and 2 yorkshire puddings for him. The roast that came out were extremely poor quality and the pork roast I had came out with 3 potatoes and 3 tiny slabs of pork and one yorkshire pudding for £12.95 the beans they sent out were barely warm, sent back and they sent them out the same way again. The only one who managed to eat 3 of them was our dog! When explaining this to the duty manager she had a look on her face as though she was slightly amused and that she didn't really care. I would only recommend this place if you want medicore food that is over price for what they serve up.

It is a beautiful pub and the food and drinks have always been fantastic, unfortunately the service of the staff can be a little hit and miss and really let's the pub down.

Excellent fish & chips at lunchtime. Good local beer and Excellent house red wine. As a result, had high expectations for a Saturday evening meal but felt the menu was quite similar to the lunchtime offer — still very good but expected something a little more special in the evening having experienced lunch. Perhaps that is just another way of saying they have a very good lunchtime menu :-)

Food is decent (though veggie options on a Sunday are very limited). Service was shocking though — even before the place got busy. Had to ask for drinks multiple times, brought three ice creams rather than the two ordered (not that the kids were complaining …), etc.

Really good inn, a nice breakfast in! Small rural hotel, bar and restaurant, decorated exquisite, the attention to detail, the rooms very nice. The only drawback is that the sound is slightly poor.

We visit the restaurant regularly. I understand it's been recently taken over. The food is excellent and not badly priced. If there was a criticism it would be that the menu doesn't usually have any 'specials' but the variety is always good in my view. The staff are friendly so Im guessing they're not the same staff as other reviewers have experienced. I DO agree that the car park is always full and I'm not sure the drivers of those cars are all in the pub, so maybe that issue could be looked at by the pub.

I stayed at the Devonshire Arms on the 30/6/13. Me and my partner were celebrating 18 years together and often have weekends away just to chill out. On arrival we were greeted in the tea room by a young lad who gave a great welcome and a advice on how to "Check In". I was concerned that I had read previous reviews and would be disappointed. May I say, the staff were brilliant and friendly and the landlord made it his position to make us feel very welcome. (Good Host) There was space on the car park but I noticed people parking and not using the Pub. The breakfast was brill and the sausages was proper sausage. We had a very nice visit and the staff looked after us very well. I would recommend this as a good base to explore the area.

The Devonshire arms has just been totally refurbished, so it looks fab. However, you can't park on the carpark because its full. We parked elsewhere, walked in and the place was empty! Clearly management need to tell the staff the carpark is for customers. We weren't made to feel welcome when we went in, the staff are unfriendly, lazy and rude, not even bothering to ask if all ok with food or if we required anything else! The food is limited to say the least and don't even bother trying to get in if you've been walking with your dog, because dogs are not welcome! I followed one member of staff into the toilets, she was so busy texting on her phone that she forgot to wash her hands after using the toilet! Ew! Spending all that money has done nothing to improve this place, except make it look pretty.
