Such a wonderful place in such superb surroundings. We have been visiting every year (except 2019) since 1999 and I have to say it is such a delight to stay. Food is great; lovely rooms, good beer, fabulous friendly staff and they let doggies in. Always accommodating and go the extra mile — thanks for all the wonderful memories 👍👍

Live accoustic singer in the evening. Comfortable room. Inclusive breakfast was continental but very nice. Close to windermere with stunning views down the valley. Would definitely stay again.

We've just celebrated our 3rd anniversary with our second stay at the Mortal Man (missed last Yr with covid-19)
We absolutely love this place staff are warm and welcoming nothing is too much trouble. We booked with the winter offer on a 2 night mid week stay but upgraded our room … worth every penny incredibly spacious and comfy with lovely views. Food is amazing but be warned portions are really on the large side!

It’s a proper old English pub, exactly how you want a country pub to be. Lots of woodwork, roaring fires, decent beer and cracking food. Accommodation is lovely too. Rooms are nicely furnished, in keeping with the age of the building, bed is comfortable, and all the staff are polite, friendly and helpful. Can’t ask for more really.

3 night stay, staff lovely food amazing. Really dog friendly, amazing walks around the area. We will be back xx.

Good food, good beer, good staff.

Took 40 minutes for chips, staff left food on table inside for us to collect and take outside as we had a dog (dont see the difference delivering to a table from kitchen or outside, we are both still food customers. Went inside to remind of food order at bar was told it wasn't ready yet abruptly bar only had about 7 people in so wasnt busy and woman behind bar had attitude. Have been to this bar a number of times over the years and really enjoyed it. Not any more.

We booked for a late Sunday lunch on 19th August at 4.45pm before driving back South as we had eaten here twice before and loved the setting of the pub and the quality of the food. Unfortunately this time we waited 50 minutes for our food and when it finally arrived there was no apology. The food was good although we had both ordered the same meal and one of us had mashed potato and the other didn't. What made me more angry is the lack of an acknowledgement that the service had been bad.

The main problem we experienced is a lack of hospitality. Although the staff seems to try it appears as if genuine hospitality is not in their core. Subsequently the rooms appear totally worn out and the small bathrooms are in a deplorable state. The food is prepared without any love, even the salads are greasy. There are also a few positive points to mention: the beer garden is nice, the surroundings are beautiful and the showerstream is nice and strong. But overall and in the present state we would not recommend this hotel.

A lovely hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. We really enjoyed our stay. Views from the Hotel to die for, walks that are spectacular and fabulous meals. We cannot wait to go back!

One of the lovliest pubs near Windermere. Fab beer garden with amazing views. The food is really good with some lovely ales. Fortunate enough to have been there several times during this glorious hot spell but with its cosy panelled bar I can imagine it being equally appealing in the winter or in Lakeland drizzle.

A great place staff very good a nice room and a great view from the beer garden. Maybe a little bit of variation on food menu is needed.

Fantastic setting just up and to the side of lake Windermere. You do have some views of the lake also, but most importantly the food was fantastic, the staff we all friendly and the atmosphere was great. Didn't stay the night as we had rented a cottage just round the corner, but every night we were happy to make our way here for food and drink. Would recommend to anyone. It is brilliantly placed for scenic walks into Windermere or Ambleside and is not far from Kirkstone pass.

One of my favourite inns in south Lakeland. Stunning scenery, great walks, good food (man-size servings), selection of delicious ciders, the rhubarb cider was moreish. (and deceptively potent). The beer garden has one of the best views arguably anywhere.

Wonderful lunch on Bank Holiday monday. Beautiful beer garden overlooking the valley. Classic british pub menu, won't win any michelin stars but its yummy. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Troutbeck.

Had a great lunch break at the pub during our walk from Ambleside to Troutbeck. The food was tasty, my wife had the ploughman's platter and I had the pie of the day, both were excellent. The beer garden is fantastic on a sunny day. You may need to book if you want a take inside for lunch.

Found this lovely pub half way round our walk, had a spot of lunch and an excellent pint in the Garden Room with a wonderful view over-looking the valley and beyond. The pint was so good we were tempted for another and ended up scrapping our walk and stayed for the whole afternoon.

Been here a few times, there is always a fantastic ale selection, a roaring fire, and great views down the valley towards Lake Windermere. The food is very good too!

Awesome landscape around and pretty nice mountains. In winter, there is snow on top of the surrounding mountains in this area. The food in the restaurant is really good and the prices are really fair. I can really recomment that place.

I have been here for food many times since first visiting the lake district 7 years ago and food has always been lovely but I think the place may have changed hands since my last visit as it really wasn't anything to write home about this time. This was probably the second worst Sunday lunch I have ever had, the worst being from a Toby Carvery. I ordered lamb, the chap put my plate on the table and said "roast beef dinner", I stated that I ordered lamb and he went off to the kitchen, came back and said "it is lamb, my mistake". It was beef. Tough and tasteless, mash tasted of nothing. My husband had the burger which was full of flavour last time we visited but this time he said it tasted dull, it looked it too, the brioche bun it came in was dry. Plus they have stopped serving Estrella. Boo! We won't be returning as there are plenty of other places serving great food in the area.

Well worth a visit. Very friendly staff and food was excellent. Great atmosphere in the bar and will definitely be back.

Food was very nice. It's not cheap but locally represents decent value for money. The service was a weird mix of self service as in you have to get your own cutlery and sauces which isn't the end of the world but for 3 courses you'll be paying £70 with a few drinks. Decent selection of alcohol but for tall people the beams are low so watch your head!

Staying in coniston found this pub in a magazine in our room so decided to pay it a visit what a surprise we got the staff are amazing more than helpful in everyway giving tasters of the in house ciders and the food was scrumptious 12 guest ciders on the wall and I tried 9 of them over 2 visits glad I wasn't driving lol the place is a gem a real old pub well worth a visit.

Great pub to stop at half way along a walk. It has a lovely beer garden with nice views and the club sandwich is highly recommended.

Suggest you stay away from the Ploughmans. We ordered the share option and was provided with what can be described as pathetic, not a double size, missing ingredients from the menu and when asked for more bread we are asked to pay a further pound. As for the £17.95 we paid I expect far better, if you are walking past this venue I would recommend you carry on walking.

I felt totally spoilt by the chief on asking for gluten free meals, the food is freshly prepared & very tasty. Good to get such high quality gluten free food.

Haven't tried the hotel, but I've eaten and drunk here several times over the last three years. The food is fine, adequate, if a little expensive. It's all about the beer and cider, and the friendly atmosphere. The main bar is the hub, with folk evenings, spoken word evenings or plenty of opportunities for a quiet post-walk pint or five. As you move through the rooms, the view improves (big windows looking down the valley) but the atmosphere gets a bit more "hotel restaurant". I prefer the first two rooms. As for the beer and cider… five local ales and (literally) a wall of ciders! Always in excellent condition, too.

The hotel might be a little hard to get to, but it's well worth it. We only needed the room for one night so we picked one of the lowest priced places we could find, but we got way more than we expected. The building looks great, pretty unusual look inside. Everywhere was very clean and tidy. And the staff were absolutely great. All very friendly and helpful, as well as good conversation. The choice of drinks in the bar was remarkable. Definitely intend to stay there again, and can't recommend the place highly enough.

We only ended up stopping for a quick drink as it seemed quite pricey — nice views of the surrounding area though!

Great restaurant and bar. Food was very good and folk music really added to the atmosphere. Restaurant staff were very friendly, and made up for less friendly bar staff. Toilets were dated but clean. I would really reccomend here for a meal out and it is only 20 mins walk mostly off the main roads from Limefitt park resorts.

Had a two night stay at the mortal man, had a lovely relaxing time, friendly staff, great food and the room was exellent, 10 /10. Recomend to anyone.

We hiked to the Mortal Man from Windermere, and unfortunately arrived after the kitchen had stopped serving, so we could not sample their dinners. However, we loved the setting, the view from the beer garden, and the fantastic array of local ciders and perries and ales.

Beer — good. Had a stout and a porter, both from the Old School Brewery. Fine. Fish And Chips — decent. Cod was flaky, batter was crisp, chips were pub chips. No complaints. Venison steak — awful. So bad. Two pieces, both way overcooked and incredibly tough. One retained slight pinkness, but both were chewy and horrid and inedible. Either two pieces of fresh meat had been cooked terribly, or some frozen meat had been blasted and served. And if it was frozen meat, what were they doing serving it pink? Bad. Very bad. Massive mound of swede mash that came with it was nice and buttery, and the honey glazed carrot was soft but okay. For £17 though. Come on. Didn't say anything to the staff because, to be honest, I was too sad about my meal. So I just paid up and left. If you read this, Mortal Man, take it as my complaint and do better next time. Pub is nice — open fires, friendly (although very slow) service — but the cooking needs work. If you can't cook decent venison, just take it off the menu.
