What a lovely place to stay.
Nice rooms.
The hosts Paul and Debbie are amazing nothing is to much trouble.

We stayed at the Waterwheel for a weekend in February 2020 with hosts Debbie and Paul. The BNB is perfectly situated within walking distance of all amenities in Ambleside. We were able to use a guest parking permit and park close by (3 minute walk). Better still, this permit comes with a list of other Southern Lake car parks you can use free of charge during your stay! Perfect. We were greeted with warm, welcoming smiles. We stayed in Loughrigg on the top floor and enjoyed the ambiance, particularly the sound of the running water mill. The room and ensuite were very comfortable with toiletries supplied (bath, shower gel, cotton wool, bath salts, makeup remover etc. ). There is a TV with NowTV providing additional channels and refreshments including port, water, tea, coffee and hot chocolate, biscuits and home-made chocolate tiffins! Debbie and Paul were fantastic hosts. The BNB was spotless, welcoming and they were able to recommend local places to eat, walk and visit. The breakfast menu was the most inclusive we've ever had — options for meat eaters and vegetarians, full english and continental. Something we really appreciated and helped set us up for a day walking. Nothing was too much trouble and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We look forward to returning soon. Well were do we start from the moment we got there we were greeted by paul and shown upto our room which was lovely and had a really good view of the waterwheel which sounded lovely during the nights. We were recommended places to eat and walks and trips. Also the use of the spa was wonderful we used both days we were there. The homemade flapjacks the port the full English breakfast everything couldn't fault it. Our hosts Paul and James were the best we shall be returning.

What a lovely little guest house this is, James and Paul are the perfect hosts.
The rooms are well appointed with lovely touches, posh toiletries and they serve up a fab breakfast.

We were looked after so well by James and Paul whilst staying at The Waterwheel Guesthouse in Ambleside. The bedroom was large but so comfortable, please see the photo of the view out of my bedroom window. We were made to feel completely at home by the owners of The Waterwheel Guesthouse in Ambleside as soon as we stepped through the door. Home made biscuits were waiting for us every evening on our return with a small decanter of Port Wine (how decedent is that! ) we would recommend the Waterwheel Guesthouse to everyone. I’m going to be going on a diet after gobbling up the amazing breakfast made by Paul every day. Thank you so much James and Paul for looking after us so well. Margaret x.

Lovely stay. Great hosts, lovely room. Fab breakfast and nice little touches like homemade biscuits in the room. A lot of thought has gone into the B&B. James and Paul where fab hosts. Nothing too much trouble. Highly recommended. A fab location too.

Just had a 2 night stay here and we didn’t know what to expect. We’d read the reviews and heard about the homemade biscuits but hadn’t really thought much of it, but boy what a shock! This place is amazing! From the moment you walk in your greeted with a smile and nothing is too much to ask (even carrying your enormous two day suit case and 4 more carrier bags up the flight of stairs to your room). Your also presented with a parking pass for the car park which is 1 minutes w…alk away to park your car free of charge for the duration of the stay, (that’s good I hear you say) you can also use this pass in other locations around the lakes too which are all listed on the back of the pass completely free of charge! When you get to your room it’s decorated in it’s own little way and everything is explained to you from the complimentary port in the decanter to the locally produced bath salts from a shop around the corner. As I mentioned before we got freshly made ‘posh jammy dodgers’ and flapjacks during our stay but that’s not where the extras end! You can use the salutations spa across the road which has an outdoor jacuzzi pool which is suitable for all weather (even — 2 according to Paul). Your room also comes with ‘now tv’ which has prepaid access to sky movies and sports to watch before you go to sleep! The breakfast in the morning also follows suit, in terms of high standards set by the host!

Highly recommended! Just returned from a couple of nights stay at Paul & James’s guesthouse! We loved every minute! Lovely rooms, amazing breakfasts and sweet treats to top it off! They are great hosts, gave us some great recommendations of walks/restaurants and places to visit! We used the salutation spa, which was lovely and an added bonus, the heated outdoor pool is so relaxing! Movies on the tv’s, which is nice to chill too after a busy day of walking! Can’t recommend this place enough!

Amazing, fantastic, superb are just a few of the words that describe this unique guesthouse! From the first warm welcome from James and Paul to our last goodbye this place creates one of the most amazing experiences. This beautiful grade II listed building is tastefully decorated with exquisite attention to detail and immaculately clean. The breakfasts were delicious with plenty of choice (even for fussy little me! ) and then we were treated to gorgeous home-baked flapjacks in our room when we returned from our walks. James and Paul are the most marvellous hosts and dedicate a lot of thoughtfulness to provide their guests with the ultimate experience in the Lakes. I can honestly say I've never stayed anywhere as special as this and I can't wait to return!

Wonderful stay at the waterwheel, hosts paul and james very friendly and welcoming. They had great knowledge of the area, where to dine and walks to go on. Rooms immaculate. Homemade flapjacks and port on arrival. Excellent breakfast. Cant wait to go back.

A hidden gem of a guest house in the heart of Ambleside. The rooms are luxurious and romantic, all mod cons in beautifully decorated Victorian style. Paul and James are delightful hosts and Paul's breakfasts are spot on (❤️the potato cakes! ) Will return again and again!

Lovely guesthouse situated on a small side street in the centre of Ambleside. Gorgeous views of the river and the waterwheel opposite. The room was so homely and welcoming. The owners Julie and Nigel were very welcoming and could not have done enough to make our stay amazing. The breakfast cooked by Nigel in the morning was fantastic, just what we needed for a long day out in the fells (they even had drying facilities for our wet clothes when we returned! Would highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a cosy getaway, form all the hussle and bustle of life. If you need some decent chill out time, this is the spot for you. We WILL be back.

We had the pleasure of staying at The Waterwheel Guesthouse a few months ago. The B&B is in a fantastic location in the centre of Ambleside — within easy walking distance to shops, Lake Ullswater and nearby fells. The building has lots of character and the rooms are perfectly clean and well finished. Julie and Nigel were fantastic hosts and made us feel very welcome. We had an amazing breakfast each morning, (cereal, fruits, fresh juices, eggs, cooked breakfast, porridge) and were recommended some wonderful walks around the surrounding area. It was a wonderful few days; we look forward to returning again soon!

Lovely rooms with great breakfasts. Little touches include cake and port in your room. Hosts happy to help with advice on walks, pubs, restaurants; well, anything really.

We have been to The Waterwheel twice and on both occasions have really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are very comfortable and well looked after (the small tipple was a nice touch too! ) and breakfast set us up well for some good long walks. Nigel and Julie are very warm and welcoming hosts, and as keen walkers themselves were well placed to advise us on routes to take. We found the location to be very convenient too, with nice pubs and restaurants within a short walking distance. All in all we were very happy to have chosen The Waterwheel and will certainly be heading back when we can. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and friendly stay in a beautiful part of the Country.

My partner and I have stayed at the Water Wheel House on a few occasions now and each one being as excellent and as pleasurable as the last. The Water Wheel House is in an excellent location and the rooms are beautiful and of an extremely high standard. The facilities on offer at the Water Wheel House are also great and in many instances of higher quality than many of the hotels I have stayed in over the years during my adventures in the Lake District. The rooms, the breakfasts, the owners and the great chats we have with them over the breakfast service, providing advice on great walks and general chat all make our stay each time that extra special. I would recommend the Water Wheel House to anyone… and I have.
