The location of the restaurant is just outside of Kirby Steven. The service is table service and is quite a pleasant dining area. The bar area is smalller than usual but still has a fine selection on tap. There is plenty of space on a nice day to eat outside and let children play. The food was really top notch, you get a lot of choice to play with and all at reasonable prices.

Fantastic place for visiting especially if you have an interest in motoring. The owner is a classic car enthusiast and the public areas are a treasure trove of memorabilia. The accommodation is excellent with comfortable beds and all the usual facilities. The food is excellent with all home cooked locally sourced ingredients. Bar prices reasonable and a good selection of drinks. Car routes for enjoying the local area are available and as we had come as a group taking over all the bedrooms the owner made our tour extra special by taking photographs of our cars at strategic points around the prepared route. Highly recommended.

Lovely and welcoming atmosphere. We stayed there with our 5 year old Golden Lab. Food was lovlely, I will recommend the Full English Breakfast. We will be going back soon.

Delightful and an absolute find. If you want style with some old fashioned laid back simplicity, then this is the place. It's like going to your mum and dad's, it's so homely.

This was our second stay at the fat lamb. The accomodation is good and comfortable. Amazing walks and scenery. The food is excellent, however found the service below average this time. We was looking for staff to serve us, our first night there was a delay in our food due to the restaurant been very busy and was not kept updated. Waited an hour from ordering to receiving our food then on departure when it came to settling our bill. The card terminal was down and the receptionist was very put out that we didn't have cash! eventually after phoning the help line to resolve this she wondered off! hense having to call out for her. My husband and I had a lovely few days away but sadly will not be returning to the fat lamb due to their staff.

I like the Fat Lamb. Lovely woman behind the bar. Always get a good welcome from her. The food is amazing and they sell Kronenburg.

I had the best meal I've had this trip there ; a marvellous fish pie (and believe me I am fussy) and lovely atisanal ice cream. The staff went out their way to help; I'd turned up soaking and they got my clothes dry overnight.

If you like classic cars, a nature reserve complete with hide (which unfortunately seems to double as a garden shed) in the back garden then this is probably the place for you. Rooms are large, the TVs small. The staff friendly and helpful. Restaurant service can be slow (specially if a motor club turns up) but they will warn residents and suggest reservation times that work. Wi-Fi can be a bit iffy it worked on the first and third day but not the second. Would it have been fixed faster if I'd been bothered enough to mention it? Probably but I was not unduly concerned. The food is good, not great, but fine when washed down with a bottle of Malbec.

Friendly service, nice home cooked food and really nice environment. Well worth a visit. The owner was chatty and friendly.

Only went for dinner. The food was great but the service needs updating. There is no till system and the waiting staff have no formal training. I know it's an oldie worldie sort of place but the basics make everyone's job easier and a more pleasant experience for the customer. Also a coffee machine wouldn't hurt…

I went for Christmas eve to watch the Kirkby Stephen silver band. Nice decorations and drinks.

Having read the reviews, thought Fat Lamb would be OK . The whole place is down at heel, the service was casual/offhand, the food was poorly presented on tired and grubby looking boards, and for what it was, expensive, my 'Field and Forest' whatever, was clearly made up some days ago, dried up and pretty tasteless, and didn't I was told come with bread? Pate etc without bread, how odd. I know how hard catering is, but this place really needs to raise its game. Please go to Aspinal Arms, Great Mitton, or Strickland Arms, Kendal, for lunch, go to a New York diner to see what service is all about, you are in a great place I'd love to come again. Best of luck. The end of January was extremely cold and we almost cancelled our trip to The Fat Lamb as road conditions were icy. As it was we were so pleased to have spent a birthday weekend here. Since I had forgotten to bring the dogs' luggage, bowls were kindly lent by the staff, we suspect we were not the first this has happened to. Unlike most hotels we stay in, the bedroom and bathrooms are a generous size making you feel immediately comfortable; the decor neutral and pleasant, everything clean and well maintained. Since there were dogs with us our ground floor room was near to an outside door, so convenient for a last night walk. This door does open; it's just difficult. Due probably to the weather, some fish was not available but salad was generous and imaginative, local meat came nicely presented in large portions, the house wine was an acceptable accompaniment. It is obvious that visitor enjoyment is taken seriously and we were not disappointed; our stay was a special offer and not only amazingly cheap, but excellent value for money. The only small complaint I had was a lack of a bath mat; I don't know whether it was policy, or just a mistake.
