If you are a fan of historical trains and steam, this place is a must go. I went on the Bald Knob trip and it is worth the 5 hours you spend. The people here are passionate about the railroad and love the Shay locomotives they own. It is worth the drive and money to get here.

A great place to visit take a ride on the steam train up the mountain. Check out the museum and watch the movie I've been there 4 times still like it.

I took my son and a friend on the train ride to Bald Knob. It was an awesome train ride. A little long though. The food they gave you for lunch was very poor. They gave us no silverware. Some lunches was missing certain items such as mayonnaise and mustard. They said we're going to have roast beef, ham and turkey but we did not get the roast beef and you only got one small slice of meat. The sandwiches instead of bread they gave us a hamburger bun. They did not keep it cool so the pasta salad was no good. So if you do go I recommend you need to take a lunch with you. I give this a rating of a 3 do to the fact of the food and they don't allow you to spend much time up top at Bald Knob once you arrive. They should serve the food at the top of Bald Knob and give you time to relax and see the views and have a decent lunch instead of something as we received.

We took the 2 hour trip to Whittaker with our 6 and 4 year olds. We road in the last car farthest from the engine and it was a good idea. You get a good view of the track ahead. All the cars have seats facing out so there are no bad seats. The views at Whittaker are great and the people who work at the railroad take great pride in their service. Everyone who worked at the railroad was FANTASTIC. Highly recommend the drive to Cass.

We are fortunate that this facility and equipment still exists and operates. A world class railroad, and a dedicated Group of volunteers. A mecca for railfans. Unique equipment. Just visit.

Beautiful scenery on the train ride. Very unique experience riding a coal powered train up a mountain. Great place to picnic halfway through train ride. Great experience for people of all ages.

Haven't been in years but the last time I was there it was great. I would recommend fall rides. They book fast so be quick.

Great train ride staff was knowledgeable and made the tour fun. Josh was our guild/conductor and he made it great.

There's nothing else quite like it anywhere. It is the place to see geared steam locomotives. The scenery is breathtaking and the history is fascinating. Standing next to a massive Shay engine as it hisses steam is like standing next to a sleeping dragon slowly breathing. On the ride up the mountain, the steam engines pound against the rails as they pull tons of cars and passengers up the winding grade that at one point is an incredible 11%. There's a lot to see and do for the train enthusiast and casual observer. But if you make the trip to the top, you will never be casual about the experience. It's a unique experience.

Fantastic and historical train ride. The ride half way up is great, but go all the way to the top because the view is awesome.

My family and many friends have been regular renters of the railroad houses for many years. This was because of the very fair prices and the full amenities that came in the houses. This year they have raised there rental prices to the point where many loyal renters may not be able to rent as much as in years past which is very disappointing. I would reconsider raising prices because you will bite the hand that feeds and will take away the only affordable option near snowshoe mountain. I would have Given 5 stars but because of the raised prices I have to give 1 star.

We went on the Haunted Halloween Train. It's totally worth it. My son had a lot of fun.

Just an amazing experience. Rented shanty town house in the village, which was CLEAN though rustic. Walk ways made it easy to walk around at night. The trains are awesome. No experience like this on the east coast. Highly recommended though remote and winding roads to get to it. We were on the train for 5 hours up to Bald Knob, the train guide was good though the sound system was just average. Just a wonderful experience.

Thought this was going to be cheesy. IT WAS NOT! Fun times to be had, good stories to be heard, and awesome choochoo ride all the way up and down the mountain. This is a must go with your family.

If you want to see beautiful fall foliage, consider taking the Bald Knob excursion in early October. The views are breathtaking every step of the way. When boarding, be sure to sit on the side facing the parking lot instead of the one facing the depot. I encourage you to bring along ear plugs, especially if you are sitting in the car closest to the locomotive. The whistle was loud even with the earplugs.

If you love nature and the sound of trains this is the place for you to visit. This is an old logging camp. They still use the Shay Engine's that pulled the logs down the mountain. Ride to the top and the views are fantastic. You can see Greenbank Observatory from the top. It's just a great Steam Locomotive ride.

Great place to visit. The staff knows these trains and the history of the area. We took the 4.5 hour train ride to bald knob. AWESOME! Very educational and fun.

The Cass Scenic Railroad is a great adventure. Loved every minute of it. My Grandfather was a logger in this area, and I really enjoy hearing about the history of the area. Beautiful along the Greenbrier, and up the mountains, to the summit of Bald Knob. Would definitely do this again!

Took the train up to Bald Knob. It was an awesome ride! We sat in car A wasnt sure at first about being so close to the engine but it worked out great. Our brake man Thomas gave me some first hand personal historic information that made the experience even better. It was amazing.

Took a ride on the Cass Railroad headed to Bald Knob. Definitely a fine piece of history and we had very good weather for a July trip. Do note that it's a 2.5h ride each way and the train goes between 10-13mph. These engines were not made to go fast. Bring some snacks and water because it's a full day. Given the chance to do it again, I'd probably save a few dollars and do one of the shorter trips.

Looking for information about the area? Go see Tammy in the visitors office. Ride the train to Bald Knob and you'll understand why they say it's almost heaven! Beautiful area. Nice people. (It had begun to rain when I took these photos)

Cool place, unique steam engine, take the shorter ride. The long ride is just a bit too long. It's good for kids, open air cars that don't have padding on the bench but you should be getting up and leave coming around so that is not really a problem.

Excellent and mind blowing how they preserved a century old railroad system. A definite go to place in West Virginia.

Such a beautiful setting. The mountains, country roads, river, train. We didn't take any tours, but drove around the small town just a little and up one of the mountain roads. Not much to look at without the tour guide. I'm sure the trails are worth the hike, and we'll likely return for a hike. There is a visitor center, town shop, and restaurant. They are very helpful and friendly in all 3 places. We did not take the train, as the tickets were more expensive than we expected. But everyone that came off the train enjoyed their trip and the scenery. It was exciting to the see the train pull up, the coal and steam, the sound of the train whistle. You can walk right up to the train. There is no cell service there, due to the Quiet Zone from the Greenbank Telescope. But there is free Wi-Fi.

Very unique destination. Stayed in pet friendly row house Probably best location in park. High on hill, nice view, close to activities and separated from other row houses. Nice inside, but a little less romantic in real, than in pictures. Clean but had that big empty feeling. Still, very nice, cool… Stayed early May, and got there on a Sunday afternoon. Was unaware the park was completely shut down on Monday. So was able to hurry up and see and photographed everything that would be closed the next day. Should have been told, but was GREAT to be the only person in the park (town)! Walk the dogs though the town numerous times, and snooped around in places I don't think I would have if park was opened. Had a good time. Friendly staff.

This is a train ride, that is truly one of kind. As the train changes from switch back to switch back, smoke, billowing from the engine blows through the open cars. Brake men on each car adjust the brakes to keep the train from sliding down the 11 degree slope. Take a lunch along, an enjoy it, at one of the stops, on the side of the mountian.

Tied for the top spot with Strasburg Railroad and Conway Scenic for best tourist trains in the country. The scenery is immaculate, and the place is filled with history. Nothing excites the imagination like a steam engine, and the echoing whistles are an unparalleled sound in the WV mountains. Deserves a ride, if not more, every year.
