We stay every year and love it. I've been staying here since I was maybe 8 with my parents. It's always nice.

Very nice indoor pool and hot tub. The main lodge is spectacular.

Beautiful mountain views.

The Smoketree is a very clean place to stay. The hotel staff are very polite and helpful. Very nice and pleasant atmosphere!

Quaint, beautiful place to stay, clean and well-kept, with friendly staff and a beautiful setting. The pool is great, too. Our only disappointment was that literally nothing is free: even the pool table costs 75 cents per game. The rooms are also quite small; a room that sleeps six had a table barely big enough for two and only one small couch. If you are planning to spend a lot of time relaxing in your suite, this probably isn't the place for you, but why would you? There are so many great places to be and beautiful hikes within easy driving distance.

Really nice place. Homey feel that is nice. Amenities are nice but you have to pay for almost everything. It isn't expensive but it is not mentioned either.

Great customer service. Clean rooms. Great game area. Beautiful landscape with nice mountain trail on property. Dates but has charm. Perfect location.

Absolutely love this gem! I loved the decor in the room and throughout the lodge. There is a very nice area by registration where one can sit and do jigsaw puzzle, read, play pool, some video games. Just plenty to do. Also has a lovely pool and an individual 3 foot pool for little ones. Has a beautiful outside area with two gas grills and picnic tables, other outdoor seating and just gorgeous scenery. The area is very quiet and just a peaceful, lovely getaway. We stayed for my daughter's wedding but we'll be back for casual getaways.

Pool not open, recreation and sauna areas Pad-locked. Told our pool key would allow us access to the pool at check-in… didn’t bother to tell us pool isn’t open. When asked when it would open we were told they didn’t know. Someone from front desk called to tell us we could use the pool at another hotel up the road. How about giving us a room at the other hotel! Very disappointed, we were really looking forward to our trip (first trip to Banner Elk) it’s our summer vacation, and the amenities that we looked forward to are not available (the hot tub is the only thing working, the emergency phone is in the recreation area… behind pad-locked door. I’m sure that there’s something wrong with that! ) Oh and the sign out front of hotel boasts an in door pool… that is closed!

Clean rooms and helpful staff. Love having a place to cook so we can save money on dining. Do be aware that this hotel is not handicapped accessible. There is a ramp to get to the second (ground) floor. Handicapped individuals will not be able to access other levels, the pool, or the main desk. There are no ramps or elevators inside the hotel.

Quiet and very quaint place. Indoor pool and game room big hits with the grandsons. Friendly staff and everything is pretty close by.

Really nice, total mountain feel. But no elevators or help with luggage. Awesome indoor pool.

Stayed a few days… nice view of mountains… lodge really needs updating.

The room was clean and bed was ok. The problem was the noise. If you want a good night's sleep, don't stay here. We stayed 2 nights and didn't get any sleep… kids running in the halls, car alarms going off in the parking lot, other noise from nearby rooms. We wouldn't stay here again. If noise doesn't bother you, then the property is ok.

We have gone here for years. Not a lot of flair, simple and clean and meets our needs. Reasonably priced.

We love staying here. The large Den/commons area is great. Our 2 families cook and eat together instead of being stuck in the rooms.

It is an old but cozy place to stay. The rooms were clean and have kitchenettes. Lobby was very big and entertaining. You can relax and play games (pool, airhockey, foosball, puzzles, etc) in the lobby. Good for families and big groups.

My daughter and I were stuck near the resorts after a snow and could not get back to our cabin. They gave us their last room and even waited past closing to check us in. The staff at the desk were very nice. The room (bed, bathroom, kitchen, dishes) were all very clean. Great value for a hotel! Close to the ski resorts. I would stay here again. Thank you so much to the people at Smoketree!

Very pleasant atmosphere, check in was smooth and friendly, lobby was very large with lots of great woodwork, enjoyed the game room. Swimming pool and hot tub were very clean and the room was very comfortable. Great price and close to area attractions. Spectacular views. Highly recommend this place to stay at!

Enjoyed our stay, great location, good rates. Building is outdated but clean. Units have kitchenettes which we didn't utilize but seemed well stocked. Loved the pool and ganeroom, but was surprised by lack of Wi-Fi (Also no cell service). Unfortunately had a room right by entryway so lots of noise of people coming and going. Would request different room next time but will likely be back as we visit the area frequently.

It's a comfortable atmosphere with a rustic cabin feel. The outside deck by the stream and trees makes you feel like you're deep in the mountains, but it's still so conveniently located. Reasonably priced, too. There are plenty of amenities and the staff are friendly. A great place to stay!

Rooms are older but seem clean. Wish the water in the hot tub was hotter. Nice staff.

The room was spacious and nice. There is a hottub that also quite nice to relax in for a bit after skiing. The staff was very nice.

The front desk staff was friendly. The rooms have an older rustic feel which isn't bad if like that. The Wi-Fi becomes less reliable the further from the main you get. Only real complaint is the tepid water temp of the hot tub. It was no where near the 102 degrees they claimed in the dry erase board. It was maybe 95 degrees. One cannot really relax their muscles with water that tepid. That being said they are one of the few that actually has a pool and hot tub.

Stayed here for 3 nights with my husband. The outside didn't look very nice, but we liked it when we went in. We also stayed in room 103 and no bed bugs (see previous review). It rained the first two days we were there, but we rented movies from the lobby and also from a red box in a grocery near by. The pool was nice for a hotel. The hot tub wasn't hot, but as a former pool operator I understand how difficult hot tubs are to maintain. The lobby is really nice. We played some of the games while it was raining. The workout room is tiny, but we were going to use it if it rained our last day there. However, the rain stopped, so we went hiking on the Grandfather Mountain trail, which was awesome — but wear good hiking shoes if you go there, it's mostly climbing over rocks. We enjoyed the kitchenete. Yes, it's small, but it's a kitchenette, not a full kitchen. We liked that the lodge looked "outdated", it gave it a rustic look, which is how I think a lodge in the mountains should look. The lodge was very quiet and peaceful. The guest laundry is free, not coin, so that was very convenient.

We stayed here for the first time for our annual ski trip. We really enjoyed the convenience to Sugar Mountain and staying in the town of Banner Elk. The room was clean and the bed slept very well. We took advantage of the kitchenette in our room and the hot tub/sauna. It was exactly what we were looking for for our weekend getaway and we are looking forward to staying there again next year.

This is an old lodge that on the surface looks very clean and well maintained. Our room 103 had bed bugs that seemed to be living in the extra blankets and pillows that were stored in the closet. When we placed them on the bed that is when we started to get bitten and then we found the bed bugs. It was already after 11 pm and we decided that we were not staying the night (or the week). The lodge desk staff is young and inexperienced with an air of indifference (oh I'm sorry). After contacting the management the next day the attitude was not much different. I felt that she was not that sympathetic to the fact that we just lost a weeks vacation plus the expense of disinfecting our garment bags and clothing not counting the three hour drive home in the early hours of the morning. She offered a return week, why would we bother.

Amazing nice pool and hot tub rooms are spacious and love the kitchens cooked my own meal every night saved a ton of money to reasonable price for everything you have.

Stayed here in August 2013. Very disappointed with the experience. Never intend to stay again. Facility is outdated, run down and not particularly clean. Had a 2 BR with kitchenette (very small), with limited counter space, had to unplug and move coffee pot in order to fill with water, countertop/bar was uneven, was smaller than expected. One bedroom was extremely small. Air conditioning unit (wall) did not cool into the bedrooms. Sleeper sofa was not comfortable. Had to plunge the toilet numerous times as it would not flush properly. Reported to staff and they 1st put in some drain cleaner and 2nd time they plunged it for us. No good results from either "quick fix". Halls were musty, lots of steps and uneven floors on the way to the pool. Staff was not particularly friendly. They advertise a "game room", 4 of the 5 arcade games had out of order signs on them and the 5th should have had one on it as well, it worked on occasion. I am not a picky person and can make do with most anything but would not recommend this lodge to anyone.

We were surprised at the great location. It is central to Boone, Banner Elk, Grandfather Mtn. And Valle Crusis. The facility is older but well kept and the rooms are clean. The lobby area is large with game tables (pool, foosball, and video), a comfortable sitting area with a gorgeous fireplace. We did not use the pool but it is clean and in a climate controlled space. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoy the NC mountains and plan to stay there in the future, whether by exchange or by the night.

When we got there the week before Christmas in 2009. The main lodge with the fireplace and tree looked Great!. After we got to our room I was very disapointed. I was ready to leave but the wife said lets stay. The room have not been remodeled sence the early 1980's and were Very small. There are harly any windows so see the veiws. The bath room looked worse than Ma and Pa place. To be polite it was Very rustic. The floors were all jacked up. The pool and hot tub were nice all in closed in a glass room so you could see out side was nice. This hotel/timeshare was ok if you are there to do the activties out side the hotel ie. Ski, water rafting. But to enjoy you room and relax better to go down to the lobby. The room is to store your stuff and sleep.
