This is my favorite place to stay in NYC. The rooms are huge & the old fashioned atmosphere is so cozy. The owner is welcoming to children, and our 8 & 10 year old granddaughters thought the place was the coolest place. It’s nice for a get away without the kids too.

Great location and amazing atmosphere, but communal showers, no AC/heat, and kinda unfriendly when you consider they want to attract musicians and philosophers. Hard to start up a conversation with other guests when the only signage is "take off your shoes". They could make it way better. I guess if you're into unique, cheap places, then it's for you.

Stayed here with my son several years ago and loved it! Great jazz nearby at Paris Moon etc plus lobster. Casual & friendliest place to stay and we enjoyed locals. Rooms are large and clean as well as social & musical. Not at all the cold distance of NYorkers but easy walk distance to all! Like Brooklyn has its unique community style, so too Harlem! Hope to stay again when next in NY xx.

A beautiful home — wonderful historic preservation, with charming and unelected details throughout. How often do you get to wander through an old brownstone that hasn't been cut up into apartments? It's delightful.

A beautiful house that's clearly been lovingly restored to a former glory. It's in a good spot close to local restaurants and bars plus the underground. Good shower too. Unfortunately I found the bed uncomfortable but that could just have been the bed I had… or just my personal opinion. It's a good value place to stay though.

I loved the house and Rene but most of all pheobe! Great place and with the bombcylone Rene took great care of us. If I come back to NY I will definitely be staying with Rene again! His pictures doesn't do his place justice.

Charming guesthouse with large rooms, quiet sleeps. Good value. Near some sweet spots to eat and go out. Transit good to other areas.

A fine place to come again after long 10 years.

When we arrived at the flophouse the first thing that hit us were shaky and loosely fitted doorknobs and wasting away front steps. The wood floods were so old and ill kept that we were afraid to take our shoes off and comply with the no shoes inside rule out of fear for getting splinters and debris in our feet. The poorly lit foryay made it hard to see where we put our feet and upon arriving the lights in the hallway upstairs were off and with no windows or doors open it was impossible to see your way up the stairs. Also, there was no staff there when we arrived, only the owners resident black cat and while we don't have any cat allergies what if someone did, they wouldn't know because there is no mention of a residental cat on the website. After going up two flights of dark, slanted, creaky steps we finally got to our hot third floor room. As soon as we walked in the room the heat and lack of modern basics hit us first. There was no A/C only two little fans, little decor, one rickety queen bed with dusty blankets, thread bare sheets, and flat pillows. The mirrors couldn't actually function as mirrors because they were so old the silver was gone from them and nothing in the room looked like it was purchased after the 70's. Dont get me started on the community bathroom on the third floor that because of lack of atenttive staff let the bathroom stay dingy and old.

Great room! Great building! So much character. Great location!

The legendary Harlem Flophouse. World renowned for it's beauty and simplicity. Bare bones service keeps it inexpensive.

So cosy! A hotel with its own style. We loved having Phoebe, the cat, visiting us. The owner was really helpful and answered every question before the visit, both fast and thorough. The price is good too. We will definitely come back!
