Reviews of Harney Camp Cabins
Nothing fancy but definitely would stay here again. The outside of the cabins are a little dilapidated, but honestly my only real complaint was that the hideaway bathroom door didn't have a handle (suuuuper big deal right? ) Since that's not a big issue I can say that it was a super simple place to stay close to Hill City and Black Elk/Harney Peak. The staff was extremely nice and the price was right on the money!
This is not a KOA or a hotel. Saying this place has character is a gentle way of saying that you better be the right type of person to stay here. My 3 kids (ages 2, 4, and 10), my wife, and myself stayed here for 3 nights and loved every moment of it. The price was very inexpensive compared to other cabin rentals. We had one of the 'older' cabins and it definitely needed a bit of TLC (which they were in the process of doing to other cabins while we were there). There are also newer, more modern cabins, but they definitely lacked the character of ours. To get to our cabin we actually had to cross a walk way that went over the creek and along the hillside a bit; the cabin itself was both partially over the creek on stilts and partially built 'into' the hill. Settling of the stilts made the cabin floor a bit uneven. However, I did a 'jump test' all around the cabin and it was structurally sound. The kitchen had both a gas stove and an ancient wood-fired stove. It also was stocked with pots, pans, and dishes. The TV was super-old-school, having a 'pull' volume knob to turn it on (but there was DISH network). All the appliance worked great and we had plenty of hot, clean water (which didn't have any taste or smell I could notice). The AC window unit was at one end of the cabin and basically cooled only the entry room. However, there were plenty of windows and a cool breeze down the hillside and into the cabin, so it really wasn't needed.

The 3 star rating is an average of awesome & awful. The good (5/5 stars) : — Beautiful & convenient location! You're within minutes of all the Black Hills sites that you want to see, like Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Jewel/Wind Caves, etc. — It's a very idyllic setting, nestled into the hills at the foot of a small cliff, with a creek running through the campground. Simply beautiful. The not-so-good (2/5 stars) : — The camp suffers from lack of maintenance & upkeep. We stayed in a cabin across the creek, and the walkway to get to the cabin was right on the verge of being unsafe (summer 2018). Seriously, I would not rent this cabin again unless the bridge was repaired. The general condition is just "run down" and "rough". Part of the roof over the hot tub had blown off in a storm, likely 2 or 3 years ago… would take about $20 and 45 minutes to repair, but wasn't. — The cabin was small, small, small. Advertised as "sleeps 5", and that's technically true, but 4 of us were crowded. — It looked liked a couple other cabins were newer or being renovated, one was closed, another was torn down, but I can only speak to the condition of what they rented to us. I would recommend that you ask how recently the cabin has been worked on, our's hadn't been touched for a couple decades. Random thing that you should know: — You're off-grid. No cell service, no Wi-Fi. That might be awesome, might be horrible.
