Great place, friendly people, I’d stay here every time I’m in Custer!

Place was noisy very very very expensive! had bugs the maid were rude would walk in the room without knocking or when we said hold on they still walk in! very very dirty sheets and towels! the pool was gross and unclean people's children all running around without guidance no supervision! no Complimentary Breakfast when you are paying high extend prices! maids leave notes expecting you to pay them money for keeping the room clean!

Nice rooms. We loved the pool and hot tub. It was a nice quiet place to stay and the staff was excellent.

The Chief Motel is very clean, affordable, and right in the heart of Custer!

Owner was nice and had a lovely dog! The room itself was clean and well furnished, with nice beds and bathroom. Was a lovely stay!

The room was nicely kept. Jamie did a really good job at the housekeeping. It had a Native theme which was cool. The hot tube shoot out kinda hard, but it still felt great after a long day of being a tourist. And the pool was a good size. They even have a sauna.

Nice place. Rooms are comfy. The people at the front desk are friendly.

This place smelled of mold in the lobby. Bruce would not accommodate our dogs when their booking site read pet friendly. He even had a dog barking in the office behind the lobby ironically.

Nice motel … clean, refrigerator, small microwave … not a huge room but big enough for the queen size bed and TV and all our stuff! Really nice owners! Thanks Bruce & Nancy!

Over priced for what you get. Rooms were clean nice thing is they do give you more towels than a average hotel. They will charge you for your room before they say they will and even after you told them you were going to pay cash at checkout and they agreed that would be ok, and then say that they didn't charge your card even though you show them your online statement that says otherwise. Update they charged my card twice leaving me stranded with 4 kids no gas money and no way to feed my kid and get them home now until Monday. When I tried to contact the owner he was very rude and hung up on me several times. I will be contacting a attorney.

The best! We accidentally left my 4 year olds teddy bear and without even asking they mailed it back to us! Will definitely come back!

Nice clean comfortable rooms. Looks are deceiving dimond in the ruff. Great price and the office staff is a hoot. Would recommend.

Service was absolutely terrible. We were greeted by who appeared to be the owner, and not only was he rather rude, he was off putting. The employees seemed to be non-existent, and I don’t blame them. If I worked in a place so sketch looking, I’d be embarrassed too. The hot tub did not work, and the pool was a complete let down. The appliances provided not only barely functioned, but were just set on the floor. I will know better next time to keep myself and my family away from such a terrible motel. And I would suggest to others.

Nice and clean. Pool, hot tub and sauna. Helpful and friendly management. Walking distance to restaurants, Family Dollar, laundromat and town playground/park. Good central location for Crazy Horse, Rushmore, Hot Springs and caves.

What a surprise jewel. Chief came highly recommended but we weren't sure, but now we know it's the only place to stay. Old style personality, large spacious rooms and quiet.

It was very clean and had everything we needed for our week long stay. Will stay again for sure. I recommend it for families. Comfy beds and nice pillows! Owners are very nice.

Best stay of our entire vacation! Clean, comfortable, friendly and did I mention how CLEAN it was? The gentleman at the front desk was welcoming and very helpful. We will definitely have the Chief Motel at the top of our list when we plan our next vacation!

This motel is clean a and cozy. The staff is friendly and willing to help. Kids staying there seemed to be having a good time. No Pets. No Smoking. No breakfast, but there are lots of restaurants nearby. On the main road that leads to the tourist sights like Mt. Rushmore. I would stay there again.

I took a very impromptu trip to Mount Rushmore (decided the night before) — drove 6 hours from Colorado and passed the Chief Motel about 20 minutes from the monument. I did not book a room until 10pm right as the office was closing. They left an envelope with my name and a map of where the room was located when I got in around 10:30pm. Very reasonable pricing and CLEAN! As someone who works in hospitality for a large resort, I pay attention to detail. They do a very good job — kudos to their owners. Decor is a bit dated, but I'm literally staying here for less than 10 hours and solely to sleep! Close proximity to just about everything and in a very cute town. I highly recommend!

We spent three nights here. Totally wonderful. Big rooms. Loved the pool area. Super nice owner who took time to tell us all the awesome places to see around town. We really enjoyed our time here and will definitely stay here again if we ever make it back to South Dakota.

Location is great, off the main road in Custer. Room was clean and comfortable and offered a family room with 2 queens and a full bed. Our family of 7 enjoyed the extra space at a great price. We came down from mount rushmore late, after their office closed, and they had a welcome note and keys taped to the door for us. Staff was friendly. We did not use the pool or spa only thing I'd change is a small breakfast offering, but there are a few breakfast places in town.

Extremely clean, comfortable rooms! The owners are extremely friendly and willing to help with any issues that may arise. This facility is also located in walking distance to downtown and a 12 min drive from Custer State Park. We will be back.

This is the best motel in custer, hands down! Great location 2 blocks away from the lil downtown, and you can't beat the pricing. I would chose this any day over a motel 6 or any hotel in the area including near mount rushmore. I got the 2 queen room and when you walk in, you have automatically A/C on which is a huge plus since its summer and most hotels/motels ive been in won't even turn that on before arriving. The beds were super comfortable, everything was nice & tidy and clean. Thank you for doing such a great job! I will be telling everyone about this place!

The room was cute, pretty nice bathroom, the Wi-Fi was down almost the entire stay (2 nights) and I'm afraid to see my next phone bill. Conveniently located, however, Wi-Fi made it from a 4-star review to a 3-star.

It was a unique experience. Everything was fine and the room was clean. The owner was very inquisitive and weird in conversation.

Very clean, well kept room. Comfortable bed, good air conditioning and very large screen tv. I rarely stay at motels but I would definitely stay here again.

We loved our stay. Rooms were way nicer than you'd expect.

The breakfast left much to be desired. I had asked for a non-smoking room and based on the horrid stench was placed in a smoking room. The staff was not helpful and mostly indifferent to my minimal requests for assistance. Overall, I would not reccomend.

I love staying at the chief, we have stayed there about 10 years now, we even stay there when we just go up for a long week end, always very nice stay, clean rooms, bike parking, pool, and sauna,
My room is 126, so please leave that one open for me… lol… I love the custer area,

Very nice place to stay at very reasonable rates. Love the discounted $1.99 breakfast at the nearby café and the food was great. Very friendly housekeepers and the pop machine is only a quarter!

If you want a wonderful place to stay that is inexpensive, clean, friendly and so much more this is the place. You get a full size swimming pool, sauna, and hot tub. You aso receive a $1.99 breakfast at the restaurant down the street which includes eggs or pancakes, hash browns, toast, sausage, bacon or ham. Yes for $1.99. They also give you a pass to use the whole time you are there for free entrance to Custer National Park. Rooms were cleaned spotless and the cleaning staff was exceptional. I can't say enough about this place other then if we go back in the future we will stay here again. Highly recommended.

When you visit Custer you are out all day and the Cheif Motel was a nice clean place to crash after a long day. The pool is very nice, and the purple pie place down the street was great for ice cream and pie. The rooms were big enough and were clean. Included a small microwave, dorm fridge and a 4 cup coffee pot. The state park pass was a nice bonus for a 3 day stay. The 1.99 bfast was a block away and killed an hour out of the day.

Kids give it an A+++ — 25cent sodas out front were a hit as well as the pink pie place down the street. Great end to day with pool… us adults liked it too — comfy beds, good AC and friendly staff!
