Reviews of Sugar Sands Beachfront Hotel, a 2*
This place is laid back as laid back gets! Rooms are up to date. Clean and huge! Mattress is a hybrid type. And is very comfortable. Will stay again!
Very good hotel they welcome me very good perfect view perfect.
We go ever year and have our room booked for next year. We love it the staff is so friendly and sweet they are like family to us.
The staff was very nice. However, our room was severely infested with cockroaches. When the maintenance guy came to our room he said he knew about the infestation. We had to move rooms at 10:30 at night to a room half the size of the room we paid for. I tried for 2 weeks to contact the manager with no call back and finally gave up. Would not recommend unless you like cockroaches in your clothes.
Quiet, nice, clean, and reasonable. 💯😍
We’ve been here twice now and just love it! It’s a quiet tucked away treasure. It’s great for families and couples. It’s Panama City without all the craziness! 💗my recommendation is to book a suite full spacious kitchen with ocean view!
This is a great place… clean and super friendly staff! Right on the beautiful beach and super warm heated pool to swim in.
Awesome place was very pleased with the accommodations. Would for sure come back. Quiet and peaceful. Like our own private getaway.
So, what their pics don't show is the huge "pit" in the beach, in front of the hotel. They also don't show that there's about a 2-3 foot drop at the end of a sloped entrance to the beach so if you're over the age of 20, you may fall. The back of the hotel was in disarray. There were ceiling tiles missing, the outside showers sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Cracks between the doors & the balconies let in bugs. There's only 1 TV & 1 ac in the room, so whoever is sleeping next to the balcony will be fine. But, whoever is sleeping next to the door will be burning up throughout the night. And if you wake up, unable to go back to sleep because of the heat, best have your phone because you can't watch TV. There's no parking. People make their own spots so then you can't even get out of your real spot. I was just extremely disappointed in the whole trip.
we did, however, have clean towels nightly, except the last night.
Heidi at the front desk was awesome! Very friendly and helpful staff. Prices are very reasonable for the area. This place is beautiful, beachfront, and out of the chaos of Panama City! It is a smaller boutique like hotel, nice rooms and has full kitchen and every room has a balcony with beach view. We will return time and time again!
Amazing staff, beautiful views, peaceful area, and decent place to stay. Only thing parking here is a very tight fit. Would I recommend… yes!
I gave it 2 stars because the location is 5 star worthy. I stayed here 14 years ago and was excited to be back. I get there first impression is upkeep through the years hasn't been there. I learned they are in the process of remodeling but the state of some of the rooms and pool are a health and safety concern. The pool had no lights in it and the pool area had barely any light. The pool at night was dark and having kids in the pool made me nervous then. My toilet broke in around 2 am. I was told I could either move or clean it myself because there is no maintenance or housekeeping 24 hrs. Hands down if you get a room they redid and don't mind the pool being dark as hell at night this is a great place to lay your head while staying on the beach.
It is an old hotel on the beach. The beds were fine for sleeping on and the staff was always friendly in passing. Our room had a full kitchen but we didn't utilize anything but the refrigerator. The fold out sofa bed was not sleep friendly so we just slept on the couch cushions. I was surprised that they didnt perform regular hotel housekeeping services. They did provide clean towels daily but the beds were never made, the bathroom wasn't cleaned, no vacuuming. Maybe this is normal but it struck me as odd. The beach area was beautiful and very family friendly at the time of our stay. Beach chairs and wave runners were available for rent.
I booked a 2 night stay here and arrived a little earlier than usual and the front desk guy was very professional and courteous helping me with getting a room asap. This hotel is at the very end of the strip so it's quiet BUT I cant complain with the size of the room I got. I was very happy! As soon as I got in the room a front desk girl called me to see how everything in the room was. The call made it feel very welcoming and showed great customer service. Check out was easy. HOWEVER my fiance had an accident and cut his finger so I ran to find a towel and grabbed the hotels medium towel. I ended up getting charged $7 for that towel (sadly).
Checked in on a Friday at 3 first floor room 103. First off I'll start with the positive. Great location quite not a lot of traffic beachfront our room location was the best part first floor so no stair climbing and when you walk out the back door there's the ocean! Now for the bad. Dirty. Stained bed sheets couch and carpet. Maids don't no how to clean properly there was dirt on bathroom floor and on carpet. Broken hanging down vent in bathroom ceiling was leaking in bathroom. Paint peeling off door. Pool light came out and was floating around with exposed wires and on our last day there some one popped in pool. Staff was friendly though.
I used to stay at this place every time we went to Panama city Beach. The last time I stayed there it was so bad I made them give me another room. There was mold in bathroom and the lid on commode was broke. This used to be a really nice play to stay at a fair price. The older original owner kept the place in shape but when the sons took over it went downhill. So sad to see it my family and I have some great memories there! It has a wonderful beach side pool and hot tub!
Loved Sugar Sands… usually stay at a sister facility but decided on sugar sands this year and so glad we did… the staff was super. Everyone was so friendly… very helpful! Our room was amazing! With an amazing view. So comfy and spacious… and the shuffel board game was great! You should put that on your amenities. Thank you Sugar Sands for making our vacation wonderful! Be back soon!
Needs some renovating and minor repairs but the staff was super friendly and accommodating. The rooms were clean. Beds were comfortable. Kitchenette waa very convenient The view from our room was spectacular. Access to the beach was awesome. My family and I loved it and will definitely come back!
Really liked this place. The young lady at the front desk was so wonderful and helpful. I wish I had her name. The hotel is under new owners and they are making obvious improvements. From what I could see, new mattresses/box springs, still in plastic, and so comfortable. Big body type pillows, four per queen bed… use what you want! Small yet full-size refrigerator, small stove, microwave and some dishes, etc. I used a knife for pb&j and that's the extent of me cooking on vacation. All linens, bed and kitchen we're new, it seemed. Also there was a sleeper sofa, dinette set and thin HDTV /chest of drawers and all looked new. One of our ceiling tiles didn't fit exactly, was the biggest problem, if that tells you anything. Pool, hot tub, water pressure and water temp, all great. Can't wait to come back.
Check in was easy and the man behind the counter was very friendly! There was no hot water the first night but after a day at the beach a cold shower didn’t feel bad. It was fixed the next day. When house keeping cleaned our room they took all our towel and left one… 4 girls 1 towel does not work! We went to the desk and they happily gave us more towels! The last day a woman asked us how our stay was and when we told her about the towels she took note and agreed that we needed more and said she would speak to the staff! The rooms were clean and the people are friendly. There was no hair dryer in the room and there was no breakfast… it was at the “other location” everything else was wonderful though!
We stayed 5 nights in May. This hotel is nothing like it used to be. They have let it go for too long. The balcony smelled like sour beer and cigarettes. They have tried painting over cracks in walls, rust on all fixtures in the bathroom, missing baseboards and it is ugly. Our carpets were not vacuumed and were as filthy as other people have described. Some staff were nice but others were rude for no reason. Of course, the best part is the quite beach and easy access, but that doesn't make up for the filth. We have stopped recommending Sugar Sands to our family and friends and will not stay here again.
Worst experience! Get everything in writing! We book three rooms, paid with cash paying the deposit in cash as well. However when we went to check out, no one could figure out where our deposit has gone! Our rooms were nasty, if you didn’t wear shoes your feet turned black. The baseboard were either just laying beside the wall, or not there. There was old food in one of the rooms with a hole in the shower, and a crack in the refrigerator. The other room carpet was soaked. Carpets had stains, and looked nasty. Stove had rust. The light fixture in the bathroom you had to physically touch the light for it to work. As we were going to leave we were going trough to check and make sure nothing was forgotten and there was a roach climbing up the wall. Staff was rude, and Would try everything to avoid you. We were told several times they would get it taken care of never seeing anyone. Thank goodness we only stay a weekend. Will not be back!
Perfect location just the structures are too dated and in the original section the beds sag and floors aren't great. Picture in your mind an old Motel 6 with the perfect beach access. Newer section is better and is over pool. Older section first floor will put your door steps from the dunes and beach.
Location is nice, beach seemed less crowded here. Staff was friendly and everything was clean. The room itself was very dated; however, that didn't hinder our enjoyment of the beach. Overall, it's a nice place to stay.
This location is I guess still being renovated, like I said I guess. Bed was comfortable frig was clean room was clean just needs more TLC. We didn't have any hot water none of the days there and I was showering super late at night. Overall it was a ok might stay here again only because the view was nice right off the beach.
We stayed April 2-4. We enjoyed our stay. I was very scared by reading some recent reviews. Yes the hotel was older and in need of some updates but other than that I have no complaints. Our room was big and clean. The housekeeping staff was very friendly. The gentleman at the front desk was very nice and accommodating. We would stay here again. I just recommend they do some updates that are needed.
The website says checkin is at 3pm. Me and my friend arrived 30 mins before check in (2:30) and we were told that a room should be available by 4 so we go to the beach (beautiful beach by the way), so we wait for the call and it’s about 6:30 and still no room. While they gave people who arrived after us rooms in front of us and constantly told us that our room will be ready shortly. The service sucks, one man was EXTREMELY rude, as well as MANY upset customers. Topping it off if it was an option I’d give them zero stars. Lastly they do not give shampoo or a blow dryer, and the HAND soap is in the SHOWER! You can’t even lock the slide door for the balcony, you have to use a steel pole to lock it! Do not stay here. You’re wasting time and money.
No chain on door. You could tell where the door had been broken. Refrigerator was NASTY AND SMELLED HORRIBLE! Took two days to get it seen about. Had to continuously call for house keeping. Room has an old smell, things biting, beds are HORRIBLE! Would not recommend this place for a family! Maybe just some teens coming to have fun and not hardly in room! Oh and there’s no way to lock the sliding door to balcony!
We just left sugar sands after a 5 night stay. It was our first trips to panama city and I guarantee it won't be our last stay at sugar sands. We felt right at home, very comfortable. We couldn't have ask for anything better for the price. Staff was friendly and helpful, rooms were clean, view was awesome, beach was PERFECT! The kids loved the heated pool and hot tub. Thanks so much for helping us have such a great time.
I made a reservation through Expedia. When I showed up to Hotel. The clerk told me it had been canceled. I had drove down with my kids for Spring break weekend. I was so upset and in tears. The clerk did everything she could to fix it and made sure we had a room for the weekend for myself and kids. I can't say enough nice things about all she did. We had a great room. Loved our stay and will be back.
First off this was the WORST HOTEL EVER! As soon we walked into the room the smell was terrible, it had paint on the carpet EVERYWHERE! My husband and I had to go to the store to get OUR own towels, air fresheners & candles because my husband find hair on his bath rag. It was old dried up vomit and cigarette buds outside on the balcony so it wasn't pleasant to sit outside to enjoy the view. The next day we left so housekeepers (which they was under staffed) to clean the room it took them to 5p. M to clean the room. My husband and I left and came back to a fire truck and a ambulance to the hotel which we know anything about. On our last day of staying, the room next to us got flooded. The sink faucet broke off it was so much water flow unto the front balcony. The hotel was very outdated. This was our Anniversary weekend and believe me this taught us to NEVER COME SUGAR SANDS AGAIN! I hope the people reading these reviews never come! PLEASE DONT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE!
Run down and dirty. One bed had a sheet on it with what looked like dried blood on it and the other bed had a bedspread on it with big blob spots on it. The room was not cleaned the whole week. Two days the spreads were thrown up over the pillows and clean towels. To be fair, it was just sold and owners changed. I have stayed here several times before and it was clean and serviced. I probably would not stay again after this week.
Wonderful people. Love the facility, great location, as far as, been away from the craziness of Panama City Beach, yet you stil close to everything, so you won't miss anything. If you're like me whom enjoys "me-time" or need to wind down and recharge batteries; this is a great place to do that. Sugar Sands is small hotel so you don't have too many people coming and going. Besides been gulf front, it feels like the hotel is one of a few that are nearest the waters of the gulf of Mexico. Plus the price is unbeatable, the hotel had a better deal booking directly through them, but I don't think that's going to last long. If you're planning to visit Panama City Beach book way ahead of time, you'll be saving money.
This was a very nice beach side hotel. We stayed in the two room one bath right on the beach and the apartment across the street. Both were great and comfortable for the group we had. The beach is awesome and not crowded. Will go back.
The rooms are very nice and clean. Nothing too fancy, but the beach is beautiful. The pool and hot tub are both nice as well.
While it's not the most gorgeous place… for the price of it, totally worth it. Rooms are large and clean. Most have kitchens. Staff are great. Been there 4 times, will go a 5th!
I love this place. It's my 4th time to stay here and we have had a great experience. Its a great place to stay whether you're a couple, bring the kids or bring the whole family and rent a couple of spots. They are always clean. The kitchens are stocked with enough to prepare meals if you want to and you save enough money on accommodations that you can afford to go out and eat. Staff is ALWAYS friendly and outgoing. They have housekeeping service and they make it very easy to replace linens as needed. They have a gazebo and grills on the deck. One pool and one hot tub. It get busy sometimes but the thing that I love about that is that there are always kids for the my kids to play with while I relax. I always end up meeting people and interacting with other guests. Need some quiet time at the pool? Hint: go in the morning or wait until around 7pm. Everyone has gone out to eat with the money that saved on accommodations and there is no one around the while you watch the sunset from the deck.
The people that work here are so nice. The pillows Suuuuuuucccccccckkkkk but I love this place so much that it still gets 5 stars! Nothing fancy though but we stay at the beach all day instead of our room so we don't need fancy!
Nice staff. We stayed several years ago and enjoyed our stay. This time Comforter was dirty. Food was left under the pull out couch. Mold in shower. Lock broken on front door. Back door had a finger sized gap to outside. We did not end up staying the night. We decided to just drive home.
Pay the couple hundred extra and stay elsewhere! First off the beds are only full size, not queen size like stated. Simple stuff like touch up paint hasn't been done in a long time. Peeling paint and holes in the ceiling. The bathroom door sticks and would trap you in sometimes. The kitchenette is stocked with limited items, some broken. The microwave was rusting away like a old pick up truck on the inside. Paths to beach are super overgrown. The pool area had a loose bricks and the pool was starting to chip all around. The safe didn't work so couldn't secure valuables. The pull out sofa is super beat up. There is a table with 4 chairs but not enough room to actually use it. I guess the only plus is we haven't seen many bugs. I would honestly compare this place to a motel 6 and won't be back and a lot of other guests that we chatted with said the same.
Well this more or less since the price is affordable.
Great location if you don't want the hassle of the strips traffic. I stayed across from the beach. The building is older and a little women but all staff have been really nice. Room was clean and kitchenette stocked. Would stay again. Excellent value.
Best place to stay in Panama City Beach Florida! Our family and friends of ours take several trips a year to Panama City Beach Florida and we always stay here. They are so friendly and there is usually always rooms available, it is a little older but very clean, and prices are so very reasonable. Can't beat their prices anywhere. It is a laid back atmosphere, not overly crowded. Very family friendly safe place. They have all types of rooms, they sleep from 2-4 all the way up to 10-12. They even have 4 units that are little apartment style. I would recommend this place for anybody! Linda is also a great manager too.
Checked in today and room was horribly filthy. Went to grocery before checking in since this place offers a full kitchen. Loaded groceries into the refrigerator and a hour later opened the refrigerator to find out the son of gun wasn't working. Receptionist was a rude and prude older lady that wasn't to helpful. She offered a full refund and said we can go else where… now that's funny because everything is booked and I just drove 10 hours to get to this scum bag hotel. At this point and time I would not recommend and will not book here anymore. Vacationer beware. If they make it right I will update this review, until then I'll stick with this one.
Bed was old style, hard and uncomfortable. Room was dirty. Dirty dishes were in the kitchenette cabinets, staff did not make up one of the beds when they cleaned the room. Nice view, but otherwise disappointing.
The rooms are spacious, views incredible, and easy access to the beach. The cons: the Wi-Fi is terrible and the pool area does not have good lighting at night. Another con is it isn't as family friendly as another place we usually stay at. A lot of loud crowds…
Me and my spouse normally stay here at least once a year when we come visit the beach. Today, on my 24th birthday, we tried to get a room and they say you have to be 25 to rent a room. This is absurd. We rented from them years before when we were younger and never caused any problems. We are loyal and repeat customers, but not after today. The front desk ladies were rude and did not even listen to what I had to say about staying there before. We were really looking forward to staying there but I will not be back. I understand not wanting kids to trash the place but we are responsible adults who have stayed there multiple time with no issues. Good luck running your business, while you're turning loyal customers away.
Great place to stay for families. Great price on quiet end of the beach. David was very accommodating and pleasant. We will be going back.
Recently renovated, very nice and clean. Impressed with room and overall appearance. We were traveling with a trailer and the front desk receptionist, Kyle, accomidated us with a room to face well lit parking area. Would definitely recommend to anyone and will be staying here again in the future. Again, very impressed! Thanks Kyle!
Amazing hotel! Hotel is located right on the beach and offers fantastic views! The suite rooms are very large with two beds and a sleeper sofa. Every room also has a full kitchen stocked with every utensil you could need! The staff was PHENOMENAL and extremely accommodating! Can't wait to come back here again!
I've stayed here twice and enjoyed it both times. Very nice staff and super accommodating, and the Sugar Shacks are awesome! The heated pool and hot tub are both super great for when the ocean is just a bit too chilly or when it's getting dark. Staff went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay, and it was very appreciated. Definitely staying at this hotel again in the future.
Incredibly kind and helpful staff. Very accommodating and willing to work with large groups. Hotel rooms were very clean and well stocked. The pool and spa were well maintained, and has a perfect spot right off the beach. And to top it all off, the rooms were an incredible value for the quality. An incredible stay, I will absolutely be coming here again.
Second year in a row staying at sugar sands and I just love it! The heated pool is awesome, the hot tub is prefect, great grilling area with a gazeebo, clean rooms and a full kitchenette! The staff is also very nice and accommodating. I love this place!
We really enjoyed our time here. We stayed across the street in the Sugar Shack and it was great. Earl & Dave on the night shift were the best! Dave went above and beyond to accommodate us and make sure that we were happy. We will be back! Soon I hope.
I seriously think a lot of these negative reviews are OTHER motels along the beach trying to compete with Sugar Sands and make them look bad. I've stayed here twice in the past, and the maids were polite and nice to have a conversation with, the front desk staff were polite, the rooms were mostly clean (as clean as you can expect for the price of the place), and the location of course is perfect. The only complaint I have is that their wireless internet at the motel was not very good. It was intermittent during our whole stay. It might have been due to the location of our room being at the very top of the tower, but if you're gonna advertise wireless internet, make sure you have enough access points to cover the entire area please. I think a lot of people in these comments also are coming here expecting fancy expensive motel quality for a budget price. People: you get what you pay for, and this place is worth what you pay to stay. It is not a ritzy place, it's not meant to be, but it's not a dump either. We're coming back in September 2015! See you soon.
We went during the holiday the fourth of July week. When we got here our rooms were not ready at all we had several rooms. We waited an hour for our room and they were very rude about that as well. Parking lot was so small that you could hit someone else vehicle. When we get to our room their was a wall in between the beds and no air was getting to the other side. The carpet was just nasty ass hell. The pictures that they have on the website is a lie. Also, the sofa bed had dirty sheets from when other guest stayed before we did. Very poor housekeeping service. Pillows were flat. Other guest were buying pillows for their stay. Sheets were not a match, staff was not friendly. We asked for more towels and management stated that we had to bring the hold ones down because they did not have anyone to wash that night. Needs repairs and we had a old TV that was not a flat screen and we requested one. On the other hand the office told me that most rooms had these TV's. I paid too much money for this POOR SERVICE AND OUTDATED ROOMS. I recommend that people be careful when you book these nasty hotels, condos etc. I will not ever come back to this resort. It was too muuch, and it was not worth the money. JULY 3-5 2015.
Well… I'm still in the middle of my vacation here. So far, everytime I ask for pillows, I'm told their out. I asked for ice, their out and I was told I could drive to a gas station… really, I didn't know that. Stains are everywhere, pillows fill like they're stuffed with smaller pillows and electrical has me worried. I try to use the outlets and I can here the faulty connection in the wall. A/C units are horrible. I could keep going. Other than that… awesome place! Sarcasm folks… find another place to stay.
We had a great time here because we were secluded on the beach — away from the crazy. We stayed in a room across the street which was unpleasant. The fridge was stained and there were dirty markings on the walls. We bought Lysol and sprayed it all over the place. The pillows are very lumpy. The back porch overlooks a nice lake but the frogs are extremely loud at night (a literal symphony). I would stay here if you are in one of the towers on the beach but I wouldn't recommend staying across the street, even if it is cheaper. We spent as much time as we could on the beach to avoid being in the room.
Very beautiful! all rooms had a amazing door to look on the beach (like a balcony) Very pleasant! and the rooms were lovely! deffiently a family place.
The room was great the view even better.
A very lovely place, very beautiful. One of the nicest places to stay on the gulf.
Very nice, quiet, family friendly place. Pool and plenty of beach access. Away from all the noise of the beach front rd. Definitely recommend for a family vacation.
After booking our trip but before going I read a lot of bad reviews about this cleanliness and customer service of this location and I was scared that we were going to go and end up with bed bugs. The place is not the Hilton. Our room was run down with moisture stains running down the wall and it was pretty dirty. The cleaning staff was rude and the front desk staff wasn't that great. The location, however, was wonderful. It's farther down from the primary hot spots of PCB but that was great. We got to see a different side of PCB and the water here has a lot of shells. This is the most shells we've collected and it was quite on the beach without the masses of the big hotels. The pool is small and gets busy with all the guest, but that allowed us to make friends with the people staying there and my kids had a blast with new buddies all weekend. Their a cool little store across the street and we even got a chance to hang with the owner Big Daddy while swimming at the pool with his little girl. It is a real neighborhood feeling hotel. I think we got lucky with a semi-dirty room though and due to that alone I would not stay here again, but if you can deal with it this part of the beach is awesome. Oh and the hotel is so close to the water. It's not set back like the bigger hotels so when your in your room or on the balcony it's right there! That was such a great feature.
This place is very outdated as other reviewers have noted. Me and my guest were their for a romantic getaway and this was surely not the place to stay. Not only was the property is disrepair it was'nt clean either. The big thing for us was the fact that the decks were way too small in the rooms on the left side of the hotel. In addition, the air conditioning unit in the room blew hot air right outside behind one of the only two chairs that were outside. Pretty terrible when the sun is hitting you directly and its 98% outside with no wind and hot air is blowing on your back. This hotel would be a prime candidate for an episode of hotels impossible.
