Gorgeous building, friendly staff.

Not only is the hostel stunningly beautiful, the staff is consistently friendly and competent. I've stayed at other hostels around the world and I keep coming back to this one. It is tops for cleanliness and comfort. Lots of special activities, too. Highly recommend.

For the price of a lengthy stay, I couldn't have asked for a better room to book. I felt safe, and they often had free food on top of complimentary breakfast! I even made a few new friends outside on the porch one night. The photos don't do the place justice and the game room downstairs is awesome! Highly recommend this hostel I will definitely be back.

Loved this place. The building is full of character and clean, despite being a period property. The housemaid (cleaner) was a kind and genuine person who was always up for a conversation. Breakfast was replenished throughout the 7-10 slot. I made some good friends and enjoyed some good food. Thanks, If I am in Sac I will return.

If you are staying in Sacramento, you must stay at this hostel. Built in the 1800s this historical building has been modified to fit the current needs of a hostel. The building is truely beautiful and the prices are great. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast in the morning and a game room to keep you busy at night. Can't say enough about the place, made our time in Sacramento enjoyable.

First impressions were great, and the ground floor area is really nice, it's clean, breakfast is decent, but the shared dorms are nasty. There's no AC, or fly nets on the windows, which means you're confined to a closed underground room with 10 people in it (it stinks of feet). They also seem to have a pet friendly policy, which although nice in theory, means you now have a dog or two adding to the foot smell. It's difficult to park around here too, as the limited spaces are always full and everything in the surrounding blocks is metered or has severe restrictions. Basically; if you can stomach a night or two in a boiling hot underground room that smells of feet and dogs, you'll be fine and it's good value. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

I have stayed at this hostel for a week while my house is in escrow. Great historic mansion, off street parking. But what gives this place a one-star rating is some of the rude staff. I work at night and sleep in the day. I came down to the front desk during the afternoon, 2 days before I am to check out and asked a male staff member if I could extend my stay for an extra night or two. He replied to me in a rude tone “No! Not in the open bay because you are a snorer, he said someone complained about you snoring and keeping them up last night. ” I responded “That’s impossible, I work nights and sleep during the day. ” “How could I keep anyone awake at night if I’m not hear! ” “The only person trying to sleep up there in the open bay from 0830 am to 0530 pm is me”. The staff member replied with “people try to sleep during the day too. ” I plan to give this disrespectfully staff members manager a peace of my mind before I check out.

The history of this location alone was worth the stay. The beautiful, mosiac tile in the entryway, for example. The host was friendly and helpful, and the room was adorable. There didn't seem to be many occupants near our room, as it was quieter than I figured. The shared bathroom was right next door and very clean. I never encountered another person in it during our stay. The location can't be beat. Right downtown with restaurants and entertainment a short walk away. Highly recommend if you are a little adventurous. Oh, parking behind the mansion is easy and inexpensive.

Stayed here for a few days while looking for an apartment in Midtown. Staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful and were happy to help me navigate the city and make suggestions. Clean sheets and towels are provided at check in, the beds are reasonably comfortable for what they are and the rooms are kept pretty dark when the lights are off so it's easy to sleep. A basic breakfast is provided every morning provided you clean your dishes, which is great. Full kitchen is available with all of the equipment one would need to make their own meals. Bathrooms are relatively clean, although I would suggest shower shoes. Location is perfect for roaming around downtown and midtown. One of the staff members is constantly seen cleaning so you know they care about cleanliness (he needs to take a break! ). Would highly recommend this hostel for anyone coming for any purpose!

Peaceful, loving and caring staff, clean rooms and baths. Nice all together. Friendly people visit from all over the place. Check this place our for yourselves and see. 2nd time here and I love it.

Hostel in Sacramento for $40 you can stay in a historical victorian, meet new friends from all over the world. Board upstairs and on the ground level group activities. If you're ready to travel the world via hostels this place will break you in.

Very nice and quiet. Continental breakfast is not bad, the people are friendly staff's friendly. Beautiful interior of yesterday with some history.

One of the most beautiful and well cared for hostels in which I have been a beautiful Victorian house that keeps retains many original elements such as the chimneys of the extraordinary carved wooden ceiling and the floor of the living room. The staff is very friendly and efficient, I had a problem in the room because a guest vomited at night they solved it quickly cleaned to remove the smell.

Nice place to stay. You have the option to bunk in a room with others, or have a private room to yourself. Lights are out @ 11:00p. M. If you need to take care of business, or talk on your phone after 11p. M. You can use the social quarters and dining area. You can wash your clothes for a dollar a load and dry them for a dollar after 2p. M. The majority of the rooms are upstairs and there is NO stair lift nor is there an elevator. But, there are rooms below with a ramp that lead to the rooms. Plus there is a lift to the front desk and dining area.

I've stayed in a lot of hostels, and what impressed me about HI Sacramento was the cleanliness, the ease of use, and the convenient location. One unique feature here is how much space there is between bunks. I could more than sit up on my bottom bunk without hitting my head on anything. This is a hostel where linnens are included, but locks aren't, so bring one, or you can buy one for $5. I didn't lock anything up, and my stuff was just fine.

Parking is kinda confusing. But if you get there, just walk in and buy the parking permit ($6/day). Close to the downtown area, and walking distance to old Sacramento. Cool place, and great interior.

This majestic mansion is the place to be. Many benefits that is beyond the experience of a typical hotel. I feel the warmth and ambience immediately from the shared room quarters to the kitchen and dining area. Meeting friendly faces from all over the world uniting and visiting in one place — Hi Sacramento. I believe this place is a hidden gem that will leave a lasting impression of meeting all your needs from affordability, culture and a peaceful stay.

I have stayed here a couple times. This hostel has had a $5 million renovation (a mansion). The location is downtown Sac. Close to Capital, museums & restaurants. I suggest you take their parking for an additional fee. I parked in front of the building, the meter lapsed 12minutes & I got a $42.50 parking ticket + the rental car company charged me an additional $14.00. They offer a continental breakfast, of coffee, toast, assorted fruit, this changes. If you plan to prepare a meal in their large kitchen, you might pick up what you need before hand. All cooking utensils are on hand, stove, frig. Microwave, etc. You clean up after yourself. I hope this helps the budget traveler. Except for the parking, this was a pleasant experience. Oh, the staff are friendly & most helpful. Happy traveling!

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Facilities were great as well. It is rather pricey for a hostel though. Overall I was satisfied with my stay.

The building was absolutely gorgeous. Worth staying at just to see the building. The reason I only rated this 3 stars was twofold. First, the were very few restrooms. There were only two single occupancy reatrooms for the entire floor I was on. Definitely had to wait in line just to use the restroom. Second, the breakfast was a bit light. Definitely the fewest breakfast options out of any hostel I've stayed at previously. Still, the hostel got the job done.

Location is good, downtown location is convenient, old architectural style, shower nozzle is bad.

This place is great! Close to downtown Sacramento and the public train system. If a hostel setting is okay with you then this is a great option. Only stayed once but staff are attentive and friendly. Free breakfast is provided and there is a game room and lots of outdoor seating. You will have to pay to park in the secure area but it’s only $6.00. And a stay of only $32.00 (plus a $3.00 fee if not a member. ) the place also has single rooms if group sleeping isn’t a consideration but those rooms are priced comparably to other hotel rooms in the area.

One of the best hostels I have ever seen both in States and in Europe. In States is the best in my opinion: building itself is adorable (old Californian mansion), everything is totally clean and stylish, they care about environment (recycled paper, sorting of garbage, efficient use of energy and water). Recommended.

This is a fantastic hostel if you ever find yourself needing to stay in Sacramento. The staff were super friendly, the breakfast was fantastic and the facilities were mostly in great condition. Would defiantly stay again.

It is a very nice place in the middle of town. So there is easy access to a lot of items like the arena, city hall and it is an easy walk to the convention center. The fact out is so.

Location was a quick walking distance away from K street, the rooms were spacious and the service was fantastic. Very friendly. The free breakfast was also worth mentioning. Very satisfying.

The Hostel is perfect, there is not a single detail they haven't thought about. The only con is that is not accessible for handicapped, which is understandable since the building is an old mansion. The bathrooms are very clean, the shower is good, the rooms are very comfortable and the breakfast really nice. The whole common area is great!

Beautiful, Hostel. I loved my four night stay. The price for all that you get is amazing. Staying here was a vacation in itself. I recommend to anyone coming to visit Sac or not, at least once in your life, come stay a couple nights. The dorms are perfect. Someone said something below about this being "a Hilton for The homeless" or such. NO WAY! They only allow a stay of 14 days per year. I came across nothing but travelers, mostly from other Countries. More than half the woman staying in the dorm I was in, were in fact backpackers. Just to mention, there isn't an Hilton that even compares to the beauty and ambiance you get at the Sac HI Hostel, nor any other hotel/motel for that matter. This place is bar none, the best you can get for the money, cleanliness, beauty, history, dining/continental breakfast, atmosphere, PERIOD! They have a spot for everyone here. It is an in-expensive, very fancy place to get away. I could have cared less to even leave the property, I didn't want to takeaway from the short amount of time I had from my stay here.

It's my favorite cheap sleep place in Sacramento. Breakfast is served every morning downstairs. Pretty decent food. Dorm rooms with musical locks, gender-segregated. Nice communal kitchen. The area around Hostel has homeless people a lot. Close to State Capitol buildings for fans of Calif State Legislators.

A beautiful, historic Victorian house with very helpful staff. Dorm rooms and private rooms available. Some rooms are more modern, so ask for what you want. Game room, communal kitchen, common room, patio dining room.

For the first two days I stayed in a single. It was great and quiet… but that did not erase the weird people staying there or that the whole house had a creepy vibe. Two of the front desk staff were friendly. But the grumpy brunette makes sure to let you know you are not guaranteed parking. She seems annoyed with working there. The bathrooms are great and spacious. The breakfast is adequate. I tried my hand at the female dorm but got placed with an older mentally ill woman who proceeded to follow me around the hostel and harrass me. Totally creeped out and after staff even witnessed it I got my last night refunded and left. Not sure about what happened to normal people in a hostel. You shouldn't have to get a restraining order when on vacation. Sigh… I wont be back due to the creepy locals that stay there. My advice would be to get a private room. It makes for a better experience.

Good place to stay in downtown customer service is good but some, of the, workers the, don't have experience to deal whit travalers need more quality personal.

Located in the center of downtown, it makes visiting anywhere around the city very accessible. You will be sharing dorm with strangers for paying less but living there for 4 nights, I didn't see more than 2 guys in my dorm. They also have free good breakfast. I would definitely visit them again.

Really nice historical building. Well maintained and an awesome place to crash. HI hostels are always awesome. Enjoyed my stay here. I'm sure you will also.

I feel safe there. It's haunted. But in a good way. I do limpias to take care of the ghosts! There are a Concierge and a Communal Kitchen there. There are button locks on all the dorm room doors.

A Terrific Accommodating Intelligent Eclectic Staff. And One Pampered Blue Betta.

My wife and I stayed here for one night and loved it. It is great to actually stay in a mansion. We got the hotel like room with its own bath. The staff was fantastic and told us of some great restaurants and shops in the area. The location is great in the middle of down town, which is the only negative as the road noise does not stop until around 11pm and restarts at 6 am.

We had a comfortable stay, like we're used to from any HI hostel. The only downside is of this hostel; there are no mixed dorms! I like dorms. That's how you meet fellow travellers while on the road. It's old fashion. It's 2013. People travel in mixed groups. So we had to stay in a private room. Our room was next to the bathroom. Every time someone uses it, it made a hell of a noise which woke me up. But other than that. Clean hostel, stunning atmosphere, and spacious kitchen. You can park your car in front for free on Sunday. There's a lot next door which cost you $5 a day to park. Walking distance to old town.
