Beautiful location and excellent hotel staff❤️

First time in Porto Santa Maria Hotel located in Old Town, so conveniently for all, but have visited Madeira on numerous occasions and stayed in other Portobay hotels, fantastic friendly helpful staff with facilities to match, food and drinks are a high standard just like the service’s.

Just spent a wonderful week here. Great staff, spacious rooms, immaculately clean, super house keeping, great pool area, close to fantastic restaurants. We stayed on a B&B basis only and selection at breakfast was fabulous, delicious and plentiful too. Ample tea and coffee also. Robes, slippers and towels for sun beds supplied and changed regularly. The pool area is lovely with plenty sun beds and nice pool bar with reasonably priced but nice food. Drinks are really not expensive here also. Only thing I would say is that the sun beds are quite uncomfortable and could do with a topper. Can’t wait to come back.

Stayed here multiple times (and others in portobay family group) — always a fabulous service, friendly staff, good food and drink, cleanliness across hotel (rooms and public areas) has always been good but even more so 're covid requirements. Cannot fault and will be back and definitely recommend.

An amazing hotel in the old town on the front, with Seaver’s view rooms and suites.

The staff are the most helpful that I have met — nothing was too much trouble.
Breakfast was buffet style and there was everything from continental cheese and meats through to a cooked breakfast — including porridge!
The pool is no more than about 4' deep, which was ideal for cooling off after lounging on one of the comfy sunbeds.
The location is ideal if you do bed and breakfast as there are so many local restaurants to choose from.
I will certainly stay here again!

Just home from a fabulous 2 week stay at Porto Santa Maria. Perfectly located in the old town. We couldn't fault it! Customer service was excellent. Great selection of hot & cold breakfast. Housekeeping team were fantastic. Every day we returned to a spotless room with fresh towels & bed linen. Reception staff were informative & gave great recommendations for trips & restaurants. My partner needed to see a doctor whilst we were there & an appointment was booked for him without us having to ask. Airport transfer was faultless. Pool towels provided & excellent bar snacks available poolside. Cocktail happy hour! I could go on! Thank you all! We will be back!

Just a very pleasant place to visit.
As a couple of young oldies a week break at a lovely hotel in the middle of the old town with the sea views has been a paradise.
To wonder down to the quay have a glass of wine and return through the old streets with painted doors has been a relaxing experience and to top it all meet the friendly restaurant owners who invite you to sit and indulge in wine or beer and people watch is just an added coating on the ice long sugar. I was in Madeira for the first time and visited the Hotel Porto Santa Maria. The hotel and its staff radiatesuch sine and cordiality that in my view there is very little and if only for a lot of money. The staff is very committed to ensuring that the guests are well. In case of problems, they always try to help where they can. The rooms of the hotel were also furnished in such a way that you feel very welcome. Very well I found that each room had a small kitchenette where plates, cups, glasses and cutlery were available even cooking you could in his room. I also find it very commendable that the hotel provides activities for the guests every day in order to make the holiday stay very varied. The hotel also has a very good connection to the center of Funchal to the bus it is only 5 min walk. I just loved the hotel and am looking forward to your next holiday in Madeira and a reunion at the Hotel Porto Santa Maria.

What s gem this hotel is! We have been here since Monday eve and unfortunately are leaving this Monday evening but I cannot fault 1 thing in this hotel! Super location, right in the centre of the old town but also on the seafront, fabulous food from breakfast to dinner, immaculate rooms-sooo clean and well set up, BUT the staff are all second to none! — the housekeepers, bar staff and waiting staff — well done to you all and to Porto Santa Maria Hotel you're doing a great job and we will be back, thank you! #

Beautiful hotel and wonderful staff. Beware of garden view rooms that are actually public gardens with added homeless people.

My husband and I have just returned from Maderia after staying in the Porto Santa Maria. This is a beautiful hotel, rooms are of a good size with the most comfortable beds we have slept in. It looks as though the rooms have very recently had a make over and the dining room was in the process of redecoration while we were there. The end result was lovely. Very relaxed atmosphere. Hospitable friendly staff. Everywhere was spotless, both inside and out. We had bed and breakfast as the central location meant that you could choose a different restaurant each night. Lots of excellent eating places literally on the door step. Sunbeds were plentiful, no need to be up at dawn with your towel here! We would definitely come back to this hotel without a doubt.

Just returned from a lovely week at the Porto Santo Maria. We found it was so peaceful and tranquil, being adults only, for a restful holiday. The hotel is in an ideal location in the old town. We enjoyed walks along the promenade every day. No problems getting a space round the pool. Our room was a good size and well equipped. The cleaners came every day and did a great job. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. It was our first visit and we will definitely come again.

Quiet, luxury hotel with friendly and helpful staff, who all seem to speak English very well. We stopped on a Bed & Breakfast basis and what food we ate at the hotel was very nice. There are dozens of bars, cafes and restaurants right outside the hotel gate so it gave us the opportunity to sample the variety of dishes on offer.

An excellent hotel for a quieter relaxing holiday as it is an adults only hotel. My only criticism is that the hot water for tea at breakfast is served in thermos jugs and is only ever warm. However our room had an induction hob, crockery, cutlery, cooking pots and pans as well as the usual kettle so making a decent cup of tea was no problem. The room also had a decent sized refrigerator with an ice making compartment. The hotel itself is in the old part of Funchal on the sea front and everything is within easy walking distance and most rooms have a sea view. The area boasts more restaurants than you can count and the hotel itself has two excellent restaurants.

Hotel Porto Santa Maria is a wonderful place to stay. It has a great location next to the promenade and the Old Town. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the hotel food is excellent. Highly recommended.

Great location for restaurants, strolling public transport. Hotel is modern and smart with nice poolside area. We had a garden studio room which overlooked a public park. This provided great people, dog and cat watching opportunities during the day but was a bit noisy at night. We would stay there again.

A compliment outside the series: Just a week ago we arrived on La Palma after a 30-hour journey, due to a storm. The hotel has four stars and actually "everything you can expect". But it's noisy, the food is good, but boring. People are impersonal, everything is kind of bland. Our favourite hotel in Madeira came together: Porto Santa Maria, where we will be for the sixth or seventh time in autumn 2018. We once again appreciate how beautiful the holiday is there, how great the atmosphere, how familiar and warm the ambience. Our first time there and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Room was great, spotlessly clean with a beautiful sea view. Hotel is perfectly located right on the sea front in the old town by the cable car with a perfect view of the cruise ships coming and going. Breakfast was plentiful with everything you could wish for. Spa treatments were lovely as were the hot tubs and pools. Only sad thing was having to come home!

What's not to like 4 th visit here. Perfect location lovely pool. Good food attentive staff definately 4 star treatment. Love it!

We stayed in December for two weeks at this hotel.
We had a very nice and large room with access to a terrace with a couple of loungers, exclusively for the adjoining rooms. That was very pleasant. Also the beds are very good. Unfortunately, every day from 4 o'clock in the morning we had loud noises from a load-chair, which tore one out of sleep. Without earplugs, the night's sleep would be so early, that was bad!
The location of diesel hotels is really optimal. So you can really relax and do something in the evening. Very good is also the Kostenose underground car park. So you had no stress after excursions to find a parking lot.
The breakfast was very good. Also the indoor pool was very pleasant in December.
We would go back to this hotel, the location is unbeatable.

Great location, nice staff, good breakfast, definitely come again (1 week is too short for this beautiful island). For Funchal alone one can plan a week. The pools are small but ok. Fitness room quite small, with a bit of imagination you get into sweating. But as with all the immobiles: location, location, location — and That's top!

Our 8th stay in your wonderful hotel. The Gourmet dinner is particularly good & lovely pianist helps the evening go along smoothly the waiting staff are attentive but not rushed. Afterwards you must go & listen to Kontraband in the Arsenal Bar — fantastic, a 3 piece band & probably the best you will hear.

Excellent hotel with good facilities and very friendly English speaking staff. Excellent position near the cable car and good facilities for our elderly mother. Not a hotel for the young as average age appears to be well beyond retirement but I would definitely stay there again with or without my elderly mother as the rooms are excellent and the seaview wonderful. Food good and they are able to cater for gluten free. Lots of good restaurants within easy walking distance. I would definitely recommend it.

Been a couple of times, always a value experience. A very nice hotel bar.

Are just there and very satisfied. This Time, however only Breakfast booked, since we even have all the nice Restaurants in the old town wanted to test. We drive very well. There is a large selection and a failure, we have, after 10 days, have not yet experienced. So also such a holiday would be to recommend. And it can be cheaper than the Halfboard. What the Hotel as the rooms are neat. The staff is really good and the location right in the old town and the harbour is great. Here we come back here. It was our second stay.

Great hotel in a great location. This is adults only which is a massive bonus, no screaming kids! It's not a massive hotel which makes it all the more relaxing. The staff are very friendly and very helpful, particularly the guest relations manager (Lina), who seems to remember all the returning guests, (and there's a lot, which says something! ) rooms are cleaned to a high standard and the beds are very comfortable. The food we have eaten here has been excellent, plus large portions. The drinks are a little pricey though. The pool area is great, not a lagoon sized one, but big enough to do laps. Plus there is an indoor pool for cooler seasons which again is a great size. There is also a terrace overlooking the harbour and city which was well under used by other guests, the views are fantastic and the design and decor is something you would see from a roof top bar in a fancy boutique style hotel. We are having a fantastic time, the harbour works haven't disturbed us, or ruined anything. I'd take the diggers over kids any day. One final thing, don't think this hotel is just for the blue rinse brigade, we are 30 years young and loved this place.

After reading the Tripadvisor users reviews about this hotel, our expectations were very high, but however, we want you to be proof of our experience, so that it can help other travellers.
When did the book through internet were aware of that not allowed guests minors of 16 years. We went to Maderia with our 18-year-old son, and never thought that the first phrase that told us the hotel receptionist was: "how old is the boy? ". Even before we welcome or good afternoon. Thought us a swear word Moreover, of a poorly educated person, who made us feel quite uncomfortable.
After our stay in the hotel, want to highlight aspects positive, such as the location of the hotel, the cleaning of the rooms, the parking free and the buffet of the breakfast.
The negative aspects, as well as the already mentioned, have been many. It room with views to the garden turned out to be a room with views to a park public in where is meet homeless and drug addicts. It was a noisy room due to the collection of glass containers every night. It was impossible to have the small open terrace door because they entered flies and mosquitoes, with the risk of transmission of dengue that exist on the island (such as warn health authorities of Madeira). In fact stung my son several times the first night.
Another negative aspect is that it is not possible in the rooms, Wi-Fi or LAN internet access, or free, or for payment. There are only Wi-Fi in reception.

Hotel meals could be better. Hot plates must be a must.
