Great place, great location.

Excellent hostel. Very clean, friendly staff, the breakfast included with the stay was good, and the beds were soft. And the area is not too loud for being in Barrio Alto.

Stayed for one night in the hostel. Nice rooms, street is abit noisy, but apart from that really nice vibe and great location.

Stay here if you want to pay top-end hotel prices for bottom-end hostel check-in procedure. We spent nearly 10 mins just waiting to leave a case and a further 25 minutes, no less, queuing just to begin the check-in process. We then got to the room, which is in a different building from the check-in desk to find that there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. Shabby chic, shabby service.

Great hostel! Nice common areas and friendly staff. Would 100% go back! Right next to the best bars in Lisbon as well.

The rooms are super clean and interesting! The only thing I wasn't prepared for was the triple decker bunk beds. The common areas are clean and have everything you could possible need. Would highly recommend.

Very nice looking hostel at a great place within Lisbon. Rooms are great but because it the three level beds you can experience a lot of noise as a lowerbunk sleeper. Also very noisy hostel bc of thin walls.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in my life. Their deco, rooms, restaurant, lounge areas are incredible! Everything was super clean at all times and its location is great. Above all, it was very well priced, perhaps its unfair to compare it with other hostels in Europe, but this was a great value! Definitely recommend it!

Very good experience. Amazing places with a view of everything Lisbon. Quality food and dishes wanted. The reception is impeccable. There's good music, it's a really hip place. I recommend this restaurant as a couple or with friends.

The hostel was very clean and the service was great. It's located in the middle of Bairro Alto which is where all the best bars and night life in Lisbon are. There's the most incredible view of the city in front of the hostel.

My boyfriend and I stayed in a superior double room for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The room was big and spacious and beautifully decorated. The independente is located in walking distance of everything you would want to see in Lisbon. We only caught the tram once to Belém to visit the gallery and eat the famous pasteis. We like to walk though and don’t mind the exercise — means more vino verde and tapas! The staff are very friendly and their map is fantastic — best map we found! Breakfast is great, it’s simple but exactly what you need for the start of your day — try the homemade juice! I couldn’t recommend the independete more if I wanted to, it’s great value for a comfortable and stylish stay. We didn’t eat in the restaurant but heard the food was good but we enjoyed sitting in the bar a few times. If your visiting Lisbon and you want the style and comfort of a hotel without the large price tag then stay here! Who needs a mini bar or room service when there is a whole City on your doorstep to explore!

An excellent hostel, the place is beautiful, the warm welcome, the reasonable prices, large rooms and comfortable beds, bathroom a little small but the Lounge and the kitchen are at the top! Good breakfast. Attention for the late risers however the hostel is quite noisy in the morning!

We really enjoyed our stay in the lovely Suite 2.3 and would recommend it — despite a very small sink in the bathroom and a rather ordinary breakfast.

Original and very vintage structure! Very nice rooms adorned with antique pieces, functional retro-style bathrooms. Very friendly staff and location.

Our rooms were clean, interesting, and comfortable. The staff was helpful, friendly, and efficient. The breakfasts were excellent.

The Two restaurant and the bar there are the best for a hostel, even close to the one from a hotel. The Place is Amazing, It used to be an embassy or something. Shared kitchen is Amazing, the lobby is a bit small but still, very warm and comfortable. Staff is very well trained. Impress your fellow backpackers. Book a bunk bed surrounded with luxurious White doors and ceilings!

This hostel is situated in a very charming old building, and the decoration is impeccable as well. The view from the room was also really special! The staff are young and great and the cleaning is excellent! Nothing disappointed me, I'm really satisfied! :)

The building is very nice and stylish with high ceilings, beds are pretty comfy and you can lock up your stuff in pretty large cabinets with a small pad lock which you get during check in which is nice. Breakfast is from 7:30 but by 8:10 (we arrived at 7:30) there didn’t seem to be much on offer other than oranges, cereal and milk along with tea and instant coffee. We gave up around 8:10 when we noticed that bread rolls just went into the oven. Don’t waste your time and just grab something in the city…

Wonderful breakfast on the terrace with a beautiful view on St George Castle, well located hotel, nicely decorated room, kind and helpful staff … but the rooms on the front side are very noisy because the hotel is located in a street with a lot of traffic even during the night as well as the miradouro! On top of it the restaurant is on the roof sharing the entry with the hotel which means that people continue to discuss in the street after leaving the restaurant (I do the same when I go to a restaurant :-) ) at 1 in the morning! Probably the rooms that are not situated on the front side of the hotel should be ok. However, both restaurants are very good so at least a good place to eat in Lisbon.

Nice hostel But at sunset destination I liked it more.

It is at one of best panoramic view You could breath in fresh air from Atlantic ocean over coffee in Breakfast Once you enter in Breakfast restaurant, lady would receive you as family house It would be happy experience from long trip However, rooms are under little noisy from street nor little cold end of September but hotel does not prepare individual heater.

Great location, very friendly staff, very cool rooms, bars, cafes, excellent food etc. The area is amazing too. I would have given 5 stars, but I was surprised and disappointed to find Nespresso products in the room and cafe. They are really wasteful in their usage of aluminium pods (and having to have a machine in every room). A step backwards when we need more sustainable solutions to everything. Apart from that, I loved the place.

We had a too-short overnight stay in Lisbon. The Independente was recommended in an article in the NY Times. We loved the funky style of the hotel and the warmth of the people on the staff. We didn't stay in for dinner but the breakfast was outstanding. We hope to return for a real visit, not just a layover between flights, and stay at the Independente again.

Staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. Room felt very safe as you had big area to lock away your personal items. Free breakfast in the morning was nice. And the location was perfect, nice park across the street, right next to erasmus corner to get cheap beers (1.20 euros) and very easy to go into the city. Only problem is the massive hill to get there from the nearest metro station but there are trams to take you up the hill. Definitely would reccomend and stay there again.

The team were helpful from the beginning with some great recommendations. Even received a complimentary drink on arrival (first for me). Rooms and bathroom were really tidy and even got a gentle wake up call after an awesome night out. I'd stay here again!

Stayed at The Independente Suites for 2 nights and couldn't sleep both — even though I changed room after I asked because the roof top bar and lift were right next to the first room (room 2.6). The second room was further from the elevator & bar but smaller, and still had loud noises from the street (room 2.10). The rooms themselves are small, they look shabby — the vintage touches are nice but their condition makes them a dirty addition more than a stylish one. The floor in the stairs & the rooms is disgusting. Yes, the bathrooms are nice & the staff is friendly, but the whole experience was disagreeable — loud, smelly, shabby, and a bit dodgy. Really expensive for what it is. Don't sleep there — but go for drinks or breakfast on the roof terrace!

We stayed in one of the suites with our 6-year old daughter and had a great time. The historic building is beautiful while the decor keeps it funky and unfussy. Room was comfortable with all necessary amenities, though a bit noisy on Saturday night which is to be expected in such a busy area. Loved breakfast in the terrace restaurant, and the bar and patio on the ground floor, our only regret was that we didn't reserve for dinner! Super friendly and helpful staff.

Cracking facilities, lovely & helpful staff, the Insolito was brilliant for both breakfast and drinks, the bars were buzzing. Will definitely come again.

The hotel was more than we ever expected it to be. The place is amazing and the people are fantastic! From Emanuel front desk at The Independente Suites and Terrace to José and Julieta at Uva do Monte. We loved it and we hope we can come back soon in a near future. A unique one-of-a-kind experience that I highly recommend.

I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay, the location the staff and the hostel itself were delightful. Aesthetically the hostel is one of the more beautiful I have seen and I always found the staff exceptionally helpful with any of my requests and more than happy to accommodate me. I was sad to have to leave and will most definitely be returning. Highly recommended.

Truly, I can not say enough about how wonderful all of the staff at the Independente are. We loved our time in Lisbon and being able to come "home" to the fabulous room. Let me tell you, you have one amazing cook there for the breakfasts. Is her name Nunez or Lourdes, We are not sure because she told us to call her "mama" and that made us laugh and then we just never got clear on her name. Any way, she is an amazing cook. Each thing she did was superb, but her cakes are truly tremendous. (I have been a professional chef and baker myself). So please ask mama if she would send me a recipe or two for those great morning cakes. Thank you for all of the help, for the care, and for making our stay so fabulous. We understand that the construction is no fault of yours but it did make it difficult to sleep or to open the door to let air in and the air-conditioning is so loud that the sleeping part was difficult. Thank you again. Jody and Bill.

Very nice and super friendly. Gave us a great parting gift for staying and even some passes for drinks. Highly recommend it for anyone! Great location too.

Very nice hostel in good location. Nice view from small square just opposite street. Tasty breakfast, unfortunately instant coffee but overall I liked it. Good internet connection with strong signal. Quite new showers.

We stayed here for three nights. The best location in the city. The viewing point opposite is fantastic. We are in both the restaurants and we were really impressed. The room was spotless and the bottle of wine was a lovely touch. I cannot recommend the Independente hostel and suites enough. Thank you to all the staff, we will stay here on our return to Lisbon.

Excellent location, friendly staffs, clean beds and bathroom! It gets noisy as doors and windows are not great. The bed are kind of shaky as well. I enjoyed the stay.

Just a bloody marvellous hostel. Couldn't of asked for nor received more.

The decor is very nice, in a retro style and industrial (beds). The beds are comfortable. The Wi-Fi does not work very well (we were on the second floor as the room). Breakfast included self-service (+ 1 sandwich with cheese and ham-head). Quality / price ratio exceptional.

Excellent location at the top of Barrio Alto. Staff were amazing. Restaurant and bar are both trendy, tasteful and exceptional. Nespresso machine in room was a lifesaver. Rooms were classy and immaculate. Can't fault them.

Poor shower and toilet facilities. Did not inform us of building works that woke us at 6 am.

I was in the hotel in Julio2016, it really is a wonderful place, well located, with details of design and distinction. The rooms are clean and stylish. The staff is super atencioso, and the breakfast very varied, and super well served by the genius of Lourdes. Only for people with good taste and money, of course.

Lean a lot of positive comments at the level of cleanliness, the beds were infested bed bugs and we found a cockroach, unacceptable. The service was good but breakfast very simple.

Nice hotel with cool interior design. It's kind of trendy and feels like Cuba. The service at breakfast was extremely friendly. At night it can be somewhat noisy, since the hotel is located in the city center. Definitely a nice place to stay!

The Independente Hostel & Suites helped change the common idea of a hostel, in their innovative and creative way, together with their will to be close to the local communites they've becomed one or the most important names in Lisboa. Even if you don't sleep there for one night, you should go there to have a drink in the great bar or go for a delicious meal in their incredible restaurant.

The restaurant is really worth the reservation.
