Dr. Holms Hotel

Our room was clean. I found the hotel charming. I like the furniture and old world charm. The food we had was good but often too cold. More attention to detail is required. No sink plug, I had to ask for an extra blanket (the room was warm enough but I can not sleep with stuffy heating on. The socket for the fridge was broken and they knew about this as it had been plugged into an alternative. It should have been fixed. Not enough sockets. A tile was hanging off the ceiling. My main gripes — only one course for a fixed evening meal — no vegetarian option either. Lack of vegetables. The front desk was not kept informed of the meal choice and didn't make any effort to find out. One evening we went to the bar for our meal but could only have two courses not three. Why?! The bar was freezing. Even the waiter said it was too cold. The meal of fish and chips was served cold. Poor information on bus timetables. The lock on the boot room was broken and their is no heat for the boots etc. Why can't you go in the swimming pool throughout the day?

It pains me to put this little stars because the hotel is charming, the ambience is uncomparable and the staff is top notch. But the number one requirement of quality for a hotel of this standing (and for any hotel for that matter), is cleanliness. Which this hotel has no concept of. Room cleaned every three or four days, cleaned being a huge overstatement because meaning simple changing the sheets and trash cans. When we arrived there was a used chewing tobacco on the floor, as well as a pacifier under the couch. The worst is probably the months long accumulation of dust under the main bed… our bed. After complaints nothing changed. Last remark for not having any towels in the spa/swimming pool area.

No water or kettle in the room.
Restaurant was fully booked for an event for dinner, I was asked to go to sports bar instead. Should have blocked off some area of the restaurant for hotel guests. I ended up having cup noodle for dinner.
My bathroom toiletries were not refilled, and when I get my sibling to call and help, the housekeeper insisted that I come out from the bathroom for her to go in to fill, instead of passing me a spare.
Hotel looks historical and room looks outdated, as it was previously a sanatorium. It feels a little eerie at night in the premise.
Also, it is at the opposite side of the geilo station to the city centre.
The only good thing: The breakfast was amazing! Best.

I also really enjoyed the restaurant on the first floor; the food was delicious, and I loved the concept of having a set menu each day with four courses including dessert, without needing to choose from a menu.
The restaurant was extremely delicious, and when we mentioned that we don’t drink alcohol or eat pork, the staff kindly adjusted a few dishes for us without any hesitation; they were very accommodating and respectful of our preferences.

Absolutely avoid this place. My husband took me there for a weekend in February and paid for a room with a view. When I checked the room it was shabby, which I could accept, but it was also dirty with bugs crawling on the bathroom floor, leaking shower, grimy tiles and somebody’s hair on the bedsheets. When we complained they told us we can get a downgrade and move to a rom with a view the next day. No discount was even offered for a night in a worse room. The reception staff was indifferent and rather unhelpful. The hotel ignored our complaint email too so I guess they know they can completely disregard guests without consequence.

Stayed in a family group of 6 over New Year 2025. Beautiful hotel with stylish, warm and cosy public areas and rooms. We loved the library for games in the evening. Very pleasant and helpful staff. Excellent facilities including the bowling alley and a ski pass machine in reception. The gym is located in the underground parking area and is a decent size but not easy to find — better signage would be useful. The pool is fairly large and deep but there is a children's pool. As usual both the indoor and outdoor jacuzzis were camped out in — all public jacuzzis usually are and there is room for more outdoor ones. The hotel's location is unsurpassed, views are excellent, it is linked to the station with a lift and walkway direct from the platform but above it so there is no noise. The food was superb with a great seafood buffet on several nights and some classy set menus (for half boarders) on others including delicious fillet steak on New Year's Eve. Breakfast was very good — from an English perspective porridge, a toaster and stronger teabags (Yorkshire? ) would have been nice. One of the best hotels we have stayed in and we thoroughly recommend it.
