Dead Valley Lodge

I had the absolute pleasure of staying here while touring Namibia and Sossuvlei.
One night is just not enough. I wish we could have stayed longer.
Arrival experience: We arrived after a long drive, a little early for our rooms to be ready for us. We were a group of 7. Not an issue.
The staff took our bags from our vehicle and lined them all up. Ready to transport them to our allocated room. The reception guided us to the lounge bar area, where tea and coffee are always available plus the bar is always open.
We had lunch, which was of good quality. The pool area looked divine.
Our luggage was taken to our rooms on a golf buggy.
The rooms (tents) are stunning, so stylish. The bathrooms are large and clean.
There is a fridge with small portions of milk and bottled water.
In the room, you'll find coffee and tea-making facilities (French press for your coffee)
Plenty of electrical sockets, the Wi-Fi is strong enough to stream online movies.
The evening meal is great, so much choice and excellent quality.
We were departing very early the next morning to get to Deadvlie before sunrise. The hotel provided us with a packed breakfast/brunch.
All we had to do was leave our packed luggage ready, and they collected it from our rooms and stored it for us.

An oasis in the desert. Accommodation is excellent — tent vibe but actual brick and solid. Powerful watercoolers that cut into the heat. Excellent coffee tray and kettle. Very spacious bathroom. Good privacy facing towards the dunes. The service is excellent with very friendly, well spoken and efficient staff. And the kitchen is A class — portion sizes are enormous and great variety.

I stayed several nights here at the lodge. Money was stolen from my wallet in my room by the cleaning staff from our lodge, even though the room was locked. When I complained, none of the cleaning staff claimed to remember who had cleaned the room and therefore who had taken the money. Of course this was a lie, because I filed a complaint that same evening and asked for the matter to be clarified. However, a complaint to the management also did not lead to anything.

Chef PP was the highlight of the stay. Himself and his team went out of their way to make the best food ever. The staff are extremely friendly. Great managers too. Thank you.

This property was a major disappointment. The photos were deceptive, and what were advertised as ‘lodges’ turned out to be basic tents. The grounds felt more like a car park than a relaxing retreat and the pool is very overlooked by diners eating their lunch. Staff were unfriendly, the food was poor, and the overall experience was very expensive for what was offered — certainly not luxury. Even the location wasn’t a benefit, as the drive to Big Daddy and the other dunes was still about 40 km away. Management were uninterested in any of our concerns. I would not recommend staying here — we moved to Le Mirage Hotel & Spa instead and had a fabulous stay there for the same price.

Gorgeous lodge right near the dramatic dunes and in the middle of sand with amazing roaming wild animals.
We ate new food which was great.
Rooms were beautiful.
We walked Dune 45 for sunset and then Big Daddy afterwards — to be rewarded with the most beautiful views. Running down Big Daddy into Deadivil was amazing.

A very special stay that I’d highly recommend, with constructive feedback at the end to help overall experience.
Fantastic location for access to Sossuvlei/Deadvlei, about 1 hour drive which is one of the closest you can find. We spent 2 nights here which was optimal time for excursions in the morning and afternoons by the pool. The design of the hotel is beautiful and striking, the rooms are spacious and private “tents” with good air con. In December it’s very hot (35-42c) but the pool and shaded beds made it comfortable. Dinners were tasty with a braai one night and a buffet with plenty of options the next. The chef is brilliant and lots of energy with his singing.
Constructive feedback: management do not greet guests on arrival or at any point during the stay which feels off considering the “luxury” feel and price range. Service is below standard in terms of greeting when you’re walking through communal areas, looking up from phones, replacing pool towels, and general attentiveness. After returning from the 5 hour morning excursions some small gesture like water or cold towel on return would be a nice touch — you get this when you check in but after a morning in the sand dunes it would also be nice. Bottled water should be complimentary next to the tea & coffee station.

We booked this lodge because of its location within the national park and the access to the dunes before the park gates open. This was definitely worthwhile and we thoroughly enjoyed our sunrise tour with Sylvester. Overall the staff were very friendly and efficient.
Room:
The rooms had a tented, safari luxury feel to them. Unfortunately no bath. Aircon can be a bit hit or miss. The rooms are quite far from the main lodge on a sand path so a buggy transfer is available.
Restaurant:
Food was enjoyable with a good selection on the dinner buffet, including various game meats. As we were out on an early dune tour, breakfast was served as a takeaway box at one of the dune stops.
Lodge:
The main building is an attractive area with a small pool that is ideal for looking out over the desert. Even though it was the middle of summer, the water was freezing.

We had the best experience at Dead Valley Lodge, service is amazing, food is great and the views are astonishing. Special thanks to Chico, Kelvin, Samuel, and Remsi for making our stay super comfortable.

A beautifully built hotel, tastefully furnished and decorated. Modern, minimalist, and perfectly in harmony with the style and colors of the desert. An ideal base for excursions to Deadvlei or for a hot air balloon ride. The welcome is generally good, but it’s truly the kitchen team that stands out, bringing joy and openness to conversation and exchange. Special mention to the chef, who greets you in the evening with a cheerful chant: “Death Valley Ho!, welcome to dinner Ho! ” Thank you!

I stayed here for one night on 5th Oct. The room/tent was super spacious and beautifully designed. Service was warm and thoughtful, and my stay was truly memorable. Highly recommended!

The location is absolutely superb, but there is significant room for improvement in management and dining.
The room feels more like an upscale luxury tent, which falls short of our expectations for what a lodge should be. Dinner was served buffet-style, but the selection was limited, and the taste was rather mediocre—disappointing given the price point.
Lunch, however, was the most baffling experience. Upon arrival, the receptionist greeted us with a witty remark, saying, "You’ve already missed lunch, " but added that they would arrange lunch boxes for us to enjoy the next day. Check-out is at 10:00, while lunch is served from 12:00 to 2:00—the timing is utterly confusing. We had booked an all-inclusive package, which should include lunch. However, neither during the booking process nor in the confirmation email were the lunch timing and arrangements specified. His explanation was unacceptable: lunch was reserved for tomorrow’s guests because the hotel was fully booked.
We were paying guests for that day as well—why should our rights be compromised for the sake of tomorrow’s guests? After some argument, we were finally allowed to dine in the restaurant. And the most frustrating part was discovering that the quality and taste of the lunch were far superior to dinner! Yet, there were clear issues with management and allocation.

We had a wonderful stay at Dead Valley Lodge – from the warm welcome to the friendly and attentive team, everything was perfect. The atmosphere is unique, the food was always delicious, and the staff made us feel truly cared for.
A special thank-you to our guide Sylvester, who took us on three unforgettable tours: to Sesriem Canyon, Dune 45 and Dead Vlei, and the Elim Dune. His knowledge about the desert, its animals, and the tracks and nests we saw made every moment special.
We learned so much, enjoyed every tour, and felt deeply connected to this stunning landscape. Highly recommended!

Lovely desert setting with fantastic and extremely attractive communal areas. The pool was very welcome as was the shaded lounge area. Excellent food and a great selection of game, plus other well prepared dishes. Rooms were very spacious with great views, including the Oryx trotting past in the early mornings or evenings. Perfect location right next to the gate.

It’s located inside the outer gate so definitely offer a great advantage. The service was amazing. However the toilet is separated from the room via a semi private space. Also the room was slightly overpriced.

I chose Dead Vlei Lodge for my trip, mainly because of its beautiful setting and the privilege of early access through the inner gate.
We arrived at the lodge around noon and had a wonderful lunch. The first impression was truly positive, especially thanks to Son at reception, who advised us to enjoy the sunset at the lodge instead of going to Dune 45 as we had planned.
After lunch, we returned to our room. The room itself was nice, though the outside curtains were a bit inconvenient, and unfortunately, there was no hot water when we showered. Still, at that moment, I felt it was acceptable, especially since we later enjoyed a magical sunset effect across the whole landscape, viewed from the pool area, which was definitely the lodge’s highlight.
Dinner was a buffet with not too many options. The grilled game meat wasn’t of the best quality.
The next morning, we started early at 6am to catch Dead Vlei before sunrise. Just before leaving, I realized I had left my bag (cash inside) the safe box, but it couldn’t be opened. I reported it to the driver and reception staff. On the first attempt, they brought the wrong master key, and since I didn’t want to keep the whole group waiting and risk missing the sunrise, I told them I’d come back later to retrieve it.
When we returned at noon, the staff brought the right key and told me it hadn’t been opened before.

Great location close to Deadvlei, Big Daddy and other attractions bit the lodge itself: HORRIBLE! We were freezing in the room (went there in wintertime) ; there was no heating. When asked for extra blankets, they were hesitant. There was also no heating in the bathroom and what’s even worse: no hot water… A plumber came and fixed the problem but water was lukewarm. The service was also under par. Food wasn’t good in comparison to other lodges. Staff wasn’t friendly. My advice: skip this place.
