KAUNG Hostel

Although very appealing at first look, it appears there is a serious lack of cleaners in Mandalay as the whole hostel was covered in a inch of dust, to the extent it resembled Shelob’s lair. The air con was useful as a chocolate teapot and the shutters did nothing to quiet down the constant beeping of angry drivers. Perhaps they stayed there before and were beeping in anger. Despite this the women on front desk were nice and helpful but would not recommend this or the city.

I liked the staff who worked here, and two of the receptionists spoke an excellent level of English. Beds were comfortable although the space between the beds was very limited. The breakfast felt like an afterthought though there was enough to share. The water was cheaper than you buy it in the street, which was just great. However, there were two serious problems for me; one, there was no community chill or lounge/sofa area, only the breakfast seating table and chairs. Which was a shame. Though it didn't matter that much as the second problem negated the need to be sociable with the severely limited air conditioning times. This meant it was so very often, so very uncomfortable to be even sat in the hotel.

Top location, nice rooms (space for your stuff, nice beds with enough “privacy”). Unfortunately the cleanliness was improbable; The bathrooms were not cleaned for 3 days (there was a toilet you could tell of that it wasn’t cleaned…), there were ants in the rooms and beds and the breakfast area was also not cleaned for once (trash was overflowing, dirty dishes). All in all the whole space was a bit stuffy, some fresh air (opening windows would have been nice).
However for the price it still was reasonable:)
