Agree with other posts that this is a solid choice for this particular city/country. And probably the best hotel I stayed in over 10 nights (although the standard generally is VERY basic). Friendly front of house. Safe, comfortable rooms. One caveat. It was Ramadan and it would have been nice if the dining room staff (or any staff) warn guests they’re going to drop tools at sunset for 45 minutes whilst they eat their own food. Absolutely they need to eat but if you’re told in advance you can get fed first. Frankly I wouldn’t pick this time to travel here as everything is closed all day and it detracts significantly from your experience. Mauritania has built a tourism school which, allegedly, is opening this year.

A truly unforgettable experience. From the moment you walk into the lobby and are greeted by a mysterious blend of industrial moisture, aging plumbing, and discount air freshener, you know you’re somewhere special.
The intermittent Wi-Fi offered a refreshing opportunity to disconnect from the modern world, functioning only occasionally and at speeds that encouraged deep reflection. The inconsistent water pressure transformed every shower into an exciting game of chance.
After replacing the dead battery in the air conditioner remote, I was delighted to discover a filter showcasing what appeared to be years of carefully curated dust and mold growth. It added a certain historical character to the room and provided a soothing backdrop for sleep.
Each morning began with a thunderous symphony of impacts so dramatic that I was never quite sure whether the building was being renovated, collapsing, or experiencing a localized seismic event. The excitement of not knowing really helped start the day with purpose.
The luxury is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. Most hotels provide comfort and tranquility; Sunset Hotel boldly asks, “What if luxury was an abstract concept? ”
As for the famous sunset view, the building thoughtfully blocks the actual sunset, leaving the rest to your imagination. Frankly, the sunset I imagined was spectacular. Worth the trip alone.
