Mukāwir is a historic hilltop town located in the Madaba Governorate of Jordan. Situated approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Madaba, Mukāwir is known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Dead Sea and the Jordan Valley. The town is most famous for being the site of the ancient fortress of Machaerus, which was originally built by the Hasmonean king Alexander Jannaeus in the 1st century BC. It later became a stronghold of King Herod the Great, and it was at Machaerus that Salome danced for Herod and requested the head of John the Baptist.
