We chose Rantei primarily because it was highlighted as kid-friendly. We were pretty satisfied with their offerings: a small but fun kids area (a few toys but lots of books), 40 degree onsen, and spacious tatami rooms with baby-friendly amenities upon request.
We especially enjoyed the open lounge area with a direct view of the kids play area – where we could relax and enjoy free drinks (including wine & beer) and desserts. I can’t speak for the alcoholic drinks but the juices tasted like the fake kind (not 100%). The desserts were perfectly bite-size and delicious. I wish they also served milk at the lounge but thankfully you can at least buy the bottles at the vending machine.
I was most disappointed by the food. While we enjoyed a private room (a must with two rowdy children), the kaiseki dinner was a bit lacking in flavor. We ordered the extra sashimi which might have been too much given the kaiseki already came with a sashimi dish.
The breakfast buffet was the most disappointing though. Breakfast entry is until 8:45 am (seems a bit early) and we arrived around 8:20 am. By then, many of the items were empty and what was left was just sad-looking and cold. We’ve been to many ryokans & hotels where there is a chef’s station with freshly cooked eggs, for example. But here, it had more of a depressing cafeteria vibe. Also the silverware & trays were dirty. Concerning health-wise.
While all-in-all, we enjoyed our stay but probably will stay elsewhere next time.
