I wanted to see a Hanzaki (Japanese Giant Salamander) during my trip to Japan and stumbled across this gem hidden in the mountain town of Yubara.
Our short, but wonderful stay at Hakkei was truly amazing. The scenery of the surrounding area was spectacular and eye catching. The town itself, quaint and charming — filled with emblems paying homage to the Hanzaki and most known for their ancient hot springs that seem to be around every corner and are publicly accessible.
The rooms were traditional in style, but featured modern amenities as well, keeping them in touch with modern times. A healthy and locally curated breakfast was served each day with the stay, and optionally (as well as HIGHLY recommended) dinner was served as well in the hotel dining area. The dinner was an awe-inspiring multi-course meal, served with local ingredients married to the season.
The hotel overlooks the famous Yubara Hot Springs, which I enjoyed partaking in the traditional customs as a foreigner. I have a few small/medium tattoos and didn’t seem to bother or be bothered by anyone.
We stayed in a room with a private hot spring onsen tub, the high alkaline water seemed to wash away worries, and was so enjoyable that my fiancé wished the inanimate tub a heartfelt farewell. The downstairs of the hotel featured separate communal men and women’s bath houses, with both in and outdoor hot springs, a sauna, and bathing area.
