At the southern end of Lago Maggiore is the town of Stresa where there is the Grand Hotel Borremees. Stay here… and not only because it has a very nice restaurant and the bar is wonderful. The hotel was a favorite of Hemingway. Several scenes in a Farewell to Arms are set in this hotel and it is across Lago Maggiore that Catherine and Fredric Henry row to safety as they make their escape to Switzerland from Italy and World War I. In a Farewell to Arms, Hemingway writes that the Grand Hotel Borremeo “was very luxurious. ” Frederic Henry, “knew the barman and sat on a high stool and ate salted almonds and potato chips. The martinis felt cool and clean. ” In addition to the salted almonds, the hotel serves vitello al tonno, a thinly sliced roasted veal with a sauce made from tuna fish and capers. Sounds bizarre, no? It’s amazing. Order a bottle of rose to go with it. If you are driving through the Italian lakes, this is your perfect stop on Lago Maggiore.

Really nice hotel. Great food and good service. Atmosphere and style is really nice.

The hotel has an excellent location and is right across the lake Maggiore. You need to just walk for 5 — 10 min to local restaurants. The menu at the hotel is limited and very few choices for vegetarians. Breakfast is decent but nothing to write home about. Rooms are small but well appointed. There is a Carrefour at 10 min distance.

Following TA we opted to have lunch here on our trip to the lake and we were thrilled.
Booked in the morning by phone, when we arrive we are amazed by the pomp and the beautiful terrace where you will be dining.
The maitre makes us accommodate and we opt for three menus of the day to €56 with appetizer (stupendous sea salad) or first (delicious ravioli stuffed with duck), main course (Ricciola cooked divinely or meat equally well cooked and delicate) and sweet (panna cotta to fishing). A good bottle of Roero Arneis to conclude and coffee with pastries.
Perfect on the whole line, service accurate and attentive. High price but proportionate to the location

They kept on touching all of my spaghet. And I was touched and did not give consent. You shouldn't accidently bump into a female pickle like that young apache helicopter. You know, It's hard being a young female pickle in this world. Periods are salty all ofi the time.

Grand luxury hotel, elegant, very nice, courtesy of excellent staff, perfect rooms, wonderful outdoor spaces with colourful flowers and lush plants. Fountains and pond with pleasing water lilies. Great spa. High-class restaurant.

Can a Top 5 star hotel have every comfort and not have air conditioning in the rooms? Well yes, fantastic place, breathtaking view price not affordable for all and 30th in the room… I was there with my family on the recommendation of a friend and after booking and seeing on the site all the services he offered (air conditioning included, was marked present) I booked 2 rooms, as they did not have a room with 4 seats.
Sauna night and got sleepy around 4 o'clock at night with wide open windows It's not my habit to complain, but after I made this the problem I was told that an older building of 150 years old and with thick walls releases heat after winter and that the air Conditioning is detached xchè is not yet season… Yesterday there were about 27th outside and yes a little abnormal, but it is a temperature now present from about 20 days… If you want advice do this to those who book, at least you have the opportunity to choose whether to book in a fairytale setting and suffer the heat or go to a 3 stars of a building more modern but with air conditioning and rest in the cool.

On the spectacularity of the location has already been said a lot by other users. I would instead highlight a couple of issues that I would never expect from a 5 star luxury hotel. First of all the fact that the air conditioning in the room was not available, which is why I spent a sleethe night nightmarish in the heat. At the express request to the reception in the middle of the night I was told: "Open the window, at night will not be disturbed by traffic". The second big deal had to do with the hotel restaurant that the night before made me sign an account, but the next morning at checkout I did find a price plus 10%. Their justification was that they had "forgotten to score a course in the menu. " In itself would not bother me, but I firmly believe that in case of errors both the responsible to have to pay, not the customer. In short, a very bad experience considering that — I repeat — this is a 5 star luxury hotel.

A dreamful place, rich in history and beautifulness. Stresa with its wonderful landscape it's the perfect location for a such high level hotel, where Hemingway loved to stay during his travels. In Italy.

This hotel is excellent — definitely 5 star! Super clean, comfortable, elegant, classy, fantastic service, beautiful, gorgeous views, great food, worth every penny! Get a room with a view — you won't regret staying here! Loved every minute and we'll be back.

A unique Hotel of its kind, offering a nineteenth-century taste experience in a stately setting. It stands out from the luxurious modernity of the other hotels in the area, more suitable for those looking for a stay of other times with a breathtaking view over the Borromean islands of Lake Maggiore.

Historic Hotel among the oldest in Italy is active since 1863 and has hosted the greats of the Earth. Still today it hosts real families, international finance and famous actors. It has a beautiful spa. Staying at this place is to do at least once in a lifetime. Or have lunch at the restaurant or sip a cup of tea at the bar.

Absolutely overwhelmed by the hotel. Exceptionally clean and luxurious this is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff are friendly and extremely professional. Breakfast is excellent. Today we used swimming pool and spa and were extremely impressed. Would recommend to anyone. We are here for another four days and won’t want to leave!

Everything is grand… l travel a lot and this is one of my favorite hotel. Even the dinner is awesome. Beautiful place, beautiful people, great service.

A superb establishment, loaded with history but, the pool really leaves a desire… Even if we do not go for it, this place smells very bad (smell of Aquarium…) It's small and, do not be claustrophobic… our room was beautiful and the breakfast never sublime.

A magical place, of luxury and elegance, in one of the most beautiful villages of the world, on Lake Maggiore. They opened the garden to the public, allowing tourists to get in part in the atmosphere of the hotel!

This hotel is splendid. I usually prefer contemporary and minimalist settings. This is the absolute contrary and it was an amazing experience. The corridors are inspired by works of art dating from the 15th / 16th century, inspired by Ancient Greece, Baroque and Renaissance. You can still feel Hemingway walking around. Part of the hotel got some amazing Art Nouveau elements. This palace is on the lakefront of Stresa, walking distance of the the center town. We were charmed by Elena the gouvernante, with her discrete but attentive eye to detail, she brings back to life the memory of this palace’s golden age. The hotel also got a very nice spa an outdoor swimming pool and tennis facilities.

Rooms are extremely small and nowhere to put your toiletries in the bathroom. My husband is not a small chap so can hardly fit in the shower a very uncomfortable experience! Not the usual shower gel and luxuries in the bathroom! Staff are very rude and bar was closed at 12:30 with the staff exclaiming that we were not in England now! I do not recommend this hotel.

Hotel does not live up to the expectations… they should better maintain the rooms. On the other hand very nice and good food. Good parking.

We had a wonderful visit this past week. The hotel is in a beautiful location overlooking Lake Maggiore. The hotel is filled with glorious artwork, painted ceilings, sculptures. There are beautiful fountains outside, including one with lights and music and dancing water features. The architecture inside and out is stunning. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and we were made to feel very welcome. We had delicious options for breakfast and a pretty dining area to eat, either on the terrace or outside. Thank you for a very delightful experience!

Wow! First impressions are that this hotel is fantastic with best location and superbly kept colourful gardens in full Bloom. Entering the hotel equally impressive with each floor having a theme from throughout history. EE were on the third floor, baroque, and luckily had corner room with view over gardens and the lake. Service so far is excellent and there is no better way to start the day than breakfast outdoor on the terrace. Enjoying every minute!

Located in a lovely town of Stresa on the shores of lake Maggiore. Magnificent property and hotel building which dates back to 1863 with lovely garden has hosted many royalties and celebrities in its rich history. Everything was perfect. And if I had to dislike something it would be the indoor pool and the fact that it does not have any resting area. You also need some towel/bathrobe hooks in the finish sauna room. Complementary bottle of water upon arrival is also expected in 5-star hotels. ;)
Nice room, excellent breakfast and super friendly staff. Very nice art collection too so you should definitely take your time and take a walk through the hallways of every floor. Free car parking is a bonus. Nice building and overall good hotel but here is some advice for a better stay. If an upgrade from room on the back (overlooking the garden) to the front (lake view) is proposed make sure that the upgrade is on a upper floor (4 or 5) as otherwise the noise from the road will largely undermine the lake view. If you do not like plastic underbed covers and if you are not less than 3 years old or incontinent make sure to ask the hotel to take them off or you may wake up in the middle of the night wondering why you are sweating so much The service at the restaurant is not to the standard of a 5 star hotel.

Grand hotel in the heart of Stresa: ideal for those who want to spend a dream weekend on the shores of Lake Maggiore. The city is well connected by highway and equidistant from Switzerland, Milan and Turin.

The room where we were eating dinner had no air conditioning and to a excessive heat.

Excellent. All absolutely top notch. Fine dining and really tasty. Remarkable wine cellar and of course wines. The staff always friendly and helpful. My family and I have snacking muoet chandor reserve imperial Champagne. Outstanding.
Prices of course are those for a 5 star hotel. Absolutely well spent.

Shocking experience, we were 15min late for a romantic dinner and they simply refused us! Extremely unfriendly staff told us to come next time, really sad to see such bad service in a "5" stars hotel.

Fantastic property under all points of view. Welcome, staff, amenities, rooms with lake view. All 5 star 10, worthy of the vote. Only two negatives. The first is that for a 5 star hotel, with its rates, the in-room Wi-Fi surcharge is unacceptable, even if only as a matter of principle. The second note instead, although the breakfast was good and rich, not you may be missing the Nutella dessert par excellence for all.

It is unacceptable for a hotel of this caliber does not have rooms accessible for people with disabilities. To my inquiry, I clarified that rooms are available with door width wide enough to pull a pram and with handles in the bathroom, where, however, there is the presence of the bathtub instead of floor-level shower, as required by the law.
It is absolutely pointless to renovate partially existing facilities without adequate studies and consultations that could easily solve obvious inconsistencies that lead you to think that a disabled person on a wheelchair can, you come into the room, but very difficult to enjoy the bath without adequate technological solutions that are surely far more costly than do not replace the same bathtub with a simple floor-level shower.
We remember that we are talking about a five star luxury accommodation! I repeat, absolutely unacceptable.

We wanted to spend a relaxed weekend. Reception: Unfriendly contempt. 5 minutes to ten we were told the kitchen closes at 10. They sent us pizzeria in a tourists. After we at 10:30 back in cash were the hotels it turned out that there was still something to eat. Claim outrageous answers. We are the oldest hotel on the place what are you actually. Check-out the same night because the room was unacceptable. Conclusion: Arrogant, incompetent, and simply rude.
