Philo Hotel

We stayed here in October, the staff were very nice and helpful. We arrived at 5am and our room wasn’t available yet but they were very helpful to get us into another room until the morning when it was ready. Very old architecture building but the staff keeps the rooms pretty good. It felt stuffy but once the AC was on, the room was so much better. I would note that you are directly across from a mosque, so prayer time is extremely loud even inside the building. It’s not the hotels fault at all but it should be noted for future people to know. You will be awoken at 5am for the call the prayer outside😭 the keys to the rooms were cool skeleton keys and made it unique. Location is great otherwise and the price is good. We hired a guide through our hotel to take us to the pyramid and he was pretty good.

Came here last minute after booking a scam hotel (classic move seems to be “plumbing problems” upon arrival and they offer to take you to another location), but it was great at Philo. Our room was nice, everyone was lovely, and obviously the location is excellent. Highly recommend!

Very good and quiet rooms. The Egyptian cotton bedsheets were very comfortable and gave us a really good night's sleep. It's a vintage style hotel, high ceiling, 24 hr hot water and a convenient refrigerator.
Although I must say I was very surprised to see our (working) refrigerator's power plug which was left unplugged after returning to our room one evening. This was after we explicitly told the staff NOT to make our room, when they asked us if we wanted our sheets changed etc. Thankfully nothing was lost from our room (and of course our sheet were as they were). So I don't know how the refrigerator's plug was unplugged. We certainly couldn't have done it as we had our yogurt in there which we wanted to eat cold upon our return.
Hany, and Youanna were of excellent help always ready to make sure customers were well taken care of. We will be sure to come again when we visit!

This has quickly become my favorite hotel in Cairo. Nestled in the heart of downtown, it offers an intimate and welcoming atmosphere. It’s just a short walk to enjoy sunsets over the Nile and close to numerous restaurants and shops in a vibrant yet safe area.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable. My room this time featured a private balcony where I enjoyed breakfast each morning. Daily cleaning is available upon request. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend staying here!

I highly recommend this hotel. It combines exceptional cleanliness with outstanding hospitality. The staff is respectful and professional, making my stay a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The location is ideal, with easy access to the metro station, which simplifies exploring Cairo. This hotel will always be my top choice when visiting Cairo.

Well located and in an old French building with a cute tiny elevator that gets you to the right spot 80% of the time. They have a nice v small balcony for view and taking in the city vibe, unfortunately the roller shutters for ours was fully down and we had to wait for a day for it to be moved halfway up and wedged in with some makeshift solution. This meant you needed to duck to get out onto the balcony but it was functional. The room was not cleaned once during the 4 day stay but staff were personable and helpful, one even unclogged the toilet with huge buckets of water.

I have high standards for accommodation, and spend a long time looking. Cairo seemed to have expensive and very cheap hotels, but not a lot in between. Some hotels have good reviews but when you check on another site they have awful ones. When I checked this hotel I found loads of good reviews and I knew that as our first stop on a large trip Cairo could be challenging/ especially in July.
My sons and I opted for an Uber but arrived during a world wide internet outage, leading us to get a taxi from the airport. This didn’t go well and when I arrived at the hotel I was surprised by the building. It was late, hot and I was worried I’d made a mistake.
We were given a triple room and we tried to settle in. After a few teething issues we met Mr Fillip and I can tell you that at that point it became clear why the reviews are all so positive.
Mr Fillip dealt with every issue, including the ones I had regarding my card being blocked. He supported me and my sons and I saw them settle into this strange country.
Mr Fillip made sure every second of the rest of our trip was enjoyable. My sons warmed to him, and they don’t tend to, and we felt happy and safe. We booked a trip to the pyramids and a Nile cruise through the hotel and I advise you to do the same.
We saw Mr Fillip treat his staff and other people very well, and his customer service was 5 star.
There’s a Dunkin’ donut and Pizza Hut just across so if you’re travelling with family, like myself, it’s very grounding and feels easy.

Very good location, it’s an antique French colonial building. It’s located in the center of the Square, so it’s a good starting point when u come visit Cairo downtown. It’s cheap for a reason, it’s an old simple 2 star “hotel”. Only 6-7 rooms, on the 3rd floor of the building. Yes there is a working antique French style lift, 4 pax max.
The rooms are simple. Very very basic hospitality services, so just be ready. U need to return the keys if u want your rooms to be made up and towels change.
Low cost so do not expect much.

Philo Hotel is a unique and distinctive place in every sense of the word. From The moment you enter the hotel building, the doorman greets you with his distinctive robe and his warm, shy smile that makes you feel like you are among your family and friends.
As soon as you enter the hotel, you are greeted by the daughter of the hotel owner or one of the receptionists, and within seconds you find the hotel owner welcoming you with a wide smile, as his wife and all the employees greet you in the same manner.
In fact, the hotel is located in a distinctive place in all aspects, starting with the vital location in the city center where you can find everything you need from clothing stores, food, cinema and theaters, as well as places of worship such as churches and mosques. All this in clean streets and under the supervision of police patrols around the day.
In addition, the place is close to the metro stations that connect all the suburbs of Cairo and Giza in a wonderful way that competes with transportation systems in developed countries, but it is characterized by cheap ticket prices. Beside that, taxis or Uber cars available in the area.
If you decide to spend some time at the hotel, you will find all the means of comfort and relaxation as each room contains a private bathroom, TV, refrigerator and free internet throughout the day.

Philo Hotel was an excellent destination for me when I visited Egypt last summer. The luxury hotel is ideally located in the bustling heart of the city, offering access to many of Cairo’s top attractions like the Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, the American University, and the Nile River, all within walking distance.
The owner, Mr. Philip, is a very knowledgeable and helpful man. He has a great experience in the accommodation industry as he provides the experience that his guests are seeking. From the moment I arrived, the staff were exceptionally welcoming and attentive. The rooms were clean and elegantly furnished, blending modern comforts with a touch of Egyptian charm.

Big and clean rooms in the heart of Cairo for a very good price. Very friendly staff. Good breakfast served in your room at the time you prefer it. No cleaning during my stay, but that is not a problem for a short stay.
I stayed here for 5 nights and I will definitively stay here again!

Staying at Philo hotel feels like traveling back in time. From the charming building with its ancient elevator, to the rooms that feel like someone’s old home rather than a hotel. Note that it’s not for those looking for modern comfort, though the AC works well. The best thing about Philo is the lovely staff and particularly Mr Philip, the owner. He let us leave our luggage for free at the hotel when we briefly came back to Cairo a week after checking out so we could visit the nearby Egyptian Museum.

I loved my stay! It's an older building and definitely a boutique experience rather than resort experience, but personally that's what I was looking for. The service was good, breakfast was wonderful (and VERY inexpensive. ) The owner, his family, and other employees went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. They also speak English fluently, which was helpful for me.
The location is excellent, just a five-ten minute walk from the Egyptian Museum. The area felt very safe, even when I was walking around at 11pm.

Philo hotel is one of the greatest hotels I have ever been! Mr Philo and his crew treat us so well, which I am so grateful to choose this hotel for staying. Facilities are great and close location to all tourist attractions. Thanks again for this hospitality!

We came to Cairo from Turkey. Mr Philip is very helpful, kind and friendly. Likewise Mina and the whole team. The location is perfect. The room was large and clean. Breakfast was filling and good. We stayed as a family and were satisfied. Thank you and recommend to everyone.

The hotel is located near el-Tahrir square. We had a large, clean, cozy room (this is not a given in Cairo, hotels are often dirty and uncomfortable). The room also had a balcony, I liked watching the busy streets of Cairo from there. Inside, however, there is a calm and very friendly atmosphere, we felt very comfortable here, everyone is nice and helpful 😊❤️. The hotel is safe and a place where you come to really relax. Not all hotels there can offer such a calm, pleasant and friendly atmosphere. We were really happy there and we will remember this pleasant hotel and we will definitely come back when we travel to Cairo again ❤️. We loved it there, especially my six year old son loved it here ❤️. And the people who work here and manage the hotel have become our dear friends we will want to meet again ❤️. We hope to come back here again.

A new hotel in the heart of downtown. Clean, bright, and with good service. The owner, Philip Anis, is very knowledgeable about Egypt and can recommend what to see, but unlike a lot of Egyptian hotel owners doesn't try to push tours on you.
The location is quiet and they provide a tasty and filling breakfast. Plus there are several good restaurants and bars nearby. Airport pickup available.
