Triabunna Barracks

The Triabunna Barracks lodging was an easy drive from Hobart airport, for us, via Richmond. This was our first time to Tasmania, and our first overnight. We were so welcomed! Our contact beforehand was very reassuring as far as details were concerned, and it went beyond what is often experienced at independent lodgings, which often tout their hospitality, but can fall short. Our interactions were very authentic, full of information, professional and generous. It was helpful in so many ways to be with locally based, knowledgeable and friendly owners. We took many of the suggestions made to us (beach stops, food, etc) and felt very well set for our trip north along the east coast.
The buildings are beautifully restored, the bed very comfortable, water is hot, room was enormous and quiet. Kim's breakfast was super delicious. John's stories and commentary were delightful. (Ask to see the quoll video! ) It's an easy walk to the ferry for Maria Island (5 minutes), which was a bonus. We stayed two nights so that we could do the full day on Maria Island, and I'd recommend this strategy if you are coming from Hobart, or beyond. Give our warmest greetings to Kim and John!

Just about the best place we have ever stayed at! The house is beautiful, incredible interior design. The location is perfect as it is a 1 min walk to the Maria island ferry. The room is specious and stylish. The bed is big and very comfortable. The Wi-Fi is great, the spacious bathroom and soaking tub were pure luxury! John and Kim are amazing hosts! They welcomed us with a complimentary wine and cheese plate (even though we showed up late) and cooked us a delicious breakfast in the morning! 100% worth the price! Highly recommend this stay if you are in the area!

A truly wonderful experience. The Barracks have been meticulously restored yet with all modern fittings and comforts. The rooms are outstanding, with top quality furnishings and fittings throughout, and the breakfasts that hosts Kim and John serve up in the beautiful common kitchen / dining room, from their own eggs, fruits, yoghurts etc are divine! The Barracks are outstanding, very elegant and stylish, and very well located next to the Maria Island ferry wharf.
The whole facility is obviously and rightfully an immense source of joy and pride to owners and hosts Kim and John, who made us feel absolutely welcomed. The service is outstanding, and their knowledge and enthusiasm for the local area a real enhancement to an already superb holiday.
We could not recommend the Barracks more highly — truly memorable and one of the best experiences we have had in decades of travel, in Australia and overseas!

Wonderful boutique accomodation in a thoughtfully restored barracks. The loft room is lovely with an amzing bathroom. We were very well looked after by Kim and John. Had a great night's sleep followed by a delicious breakfast.

Simply the best …. We have stayed across Tasmania in everything from tents to luxury hotels and this is the best place we have stayed. Kim and John are excellent hosts. The story of how they meticulously restored the barracks is well worth listening to. We stayed in the Loft room, which was amazing, beautifully finished and with a huge bathroom.
Breakfast was amazing. One of the best coffees I’ve had in Tasmania and fresh eggs from the chooks at the back of the property.
Very handy for the Maria Island Ferry (50m walk) and the Spring Bay Hotel for dinner (20m walk).

We had an absolutely wonderful overnight stay at Triabunna Barracks. Hosts John and Kim were exceptional, serving a delicious breakfast and sharing fascinating insights and history about the property. The meticulous restoration and stylish design of the building made the experience truly special. Highly recommended – it was worth every moment!

An absolute 5* experience! John & Kim the owners are such great hosts. The bedrooms are enoooormous and luxurious with huge ensuite bathrooms. There is a communal lounge/kitchen on the ground floor which is big and again very comfortable. There is an honesty bar with some excellent wines available. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped if you want to self cater and there is an excellent butcher opposite — just check opening times. We arrived a bit late and Kim kindly went to the fish & chip shop 1 minute walk away and ordered our food in case it was closing! Generally in Tasmania everything closes early. There is secure off road parking and the Maria Island ferry is 1 minute walk.
We were on an east coast road trip of Tasmania and stayed in 4 different places. This was the best by far.

Beautifully restored accommodation with all the creature comforts you could need on your holiday. Hosts were exceptional, greeting us with a glass of wine and cheese platter on arrival and cooking an amazing breakfast. Highly recommend if you are looking for somewhere to stay before a trip to Maria Island. Thank you for making our stay in Triabunna so special.

We had the opportunity to stay at Triabunna Barracks several weeks ago for two nights. It was absolutely perfect in every way. The property itself has been restored with such care and finesse by the owners, true to the original design, and adhering to strict heritage guidelines. If you like history and architecture this in itself will appeal.
It is also the perfect place to stay if you are intending to have a day trip to hike or bike on Maria Island. We walked from the accomodation with our bikes (100 metres) to board the ferry.
The breakfast provided was delicious, Kim’s homemade compote, cereal and eggs on home made bread. John made great coffee and chatted to us about the area and restoration. We ate dinner at the pub next door, great food and service (venue suggested by John and Kim).
The hosts John and Kim are passionate about the town and its history as well as to sharing this information with their guests if they want to know.
They are perfect hosts, there to look after their guests but not intrude.
The room we stayed in was beautifully appointed (the bakery room), very specious with an enormous bathroom and wonderfull shower. The products provided were locally sourced (bathroom products and food. )
Triabunna is only a small town but a lovely place to spend a couple of nights if travelling along the East Coast, and the Barracks is the place to stay.

My wife and I had an exceptional stay at Triabunna Barracks. John and Kim were outstanding hosts, welcoming us with a locally sourced cheese platter and G&Ts, and sending us off with a superb home-cooked breakfast.
The barracks have been beautifully and respectfully restored and would not look out of place on Grand Designs. Our suite offered every modern comfort, including underfloor heating, a kitchenette, an art TV, and a deep two-person soaker bath.
The location is excellent, with everything an easy walk away. There is a cosy pub next door serving great meals, and the popular fish van nearby offers excellent seafood. The ferry to Maria Island is only a short stroll from the property. Maria Island is a must, with incredible scenery, and you should allow at least half a day to explore it.
John shared fascinating insights into the restoration, much of which he completed himself, and Kim’s homemade yoghurt, poached fruit, and eggs were a highlight.
We were only able to stay one night, but we strongly recommend a longer visit.

The minute my wife and I walked into the Barracks we were greeted by hosts John and Kim. They showed us up to our room, which was absolutely beautifully renovated and furnished, keeping the feel of days gone by.
The room had a very warm and cosy atmosphere (which was nice as the weather wasn't the warmest outside) with the split system already on for us and bathroom floors heated.
In the comfortable communal lounge/kitchen downstairs the fire place was going when we returned downstairs, with a lovely little local cheese and meat platter with locally made condiments prepared by the hosts or a welcoming start to our stay.
Triabunna Barracks was great value for money, very clean and looked after, in a nice and quiet area.
It's only a 2 min walk to the marina to catch the ferry to beautiful Maria Island about 45 mins away, definitely a great place to visit while enjoying this great little town nestled on the east coast of Tasmania and only 40mins to an hr to Hobart.
Last but not least, it is important to mention that John and Kim are excellent hosts, who went out of their way to make our stay the best it could be. We had a beautiful home cooked breakfast every morning and when we ran into some trouble with the hire car, John and Kim went out of their way to help us out, which saved our day.
We are very happy to have chosen Triabunna for our stay on the South East Coast and hope to stay there again in future.

Had an amazing stay at Triabunna Barracks! Kim and John were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a delicious cheese platter and a glass of wine, such a thoughtful touch.  The accommodation was spotless, beautifully remodeled, and full of character. We stayed in The Loft, which had 2 cozy couches, mini fridge, and a huge bathroom with heated floors. The building’s history as a functioning barracks makes it fascinating.  Everything has been restored with such care and attention to detail. Breakfast was personalized and absolutely delicious. The location is perfect, just a short 2 min walk across the street to the Maria Island Ferry. Kim and John provided lots of great local information about wildlife, hikes, and the area’s history. Highly recommend doing the Bishop and Clerk trek on Maria Island.  It’s challenging but has breathtaking views. Be sure to catch the last ferry back to see the wombats that come out in the late afternoon. Overall, Triabunna Barracks is quiet, comfortable, and luxuriously furnished.  It's a true gem. Highly recommended.

Outstanding renovated historic property in the quiet port of Triabunna. Great hosts, helpful but unobtrusive. Local cheese and wine / beer on arrival much appreciated and home cooked breakfast was great. Large, well equipped room. Only downside we should have stayed two nights to fit in Maria Island! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the beautifully restored Barracks at Triabunna. Our accommodation in 'The Bakery' was exceptionally spacious, featuring high-end finishes throughout and a particularly stunning bathroom.
Our hosts, Kim and John, were warm, welcoming, and attentive, contributing greatly to our overall wonderful experience. The cooked breakfast was amazing and.
Complemented by lovely quality coffee.
The property is so rich in history and has been meticulously transformed into an outstanding bed and breakfast. We sincerely look forward to returning in the future. Thank you Anne & Scott.

Kim and John are wonderful hosts, always up for a friendly yarn at this exquisite B&B — historic army barracks they have restored with their own hands, love and attention to detail. Sitting by the wood fire with a cheese platter and glass of wine on arrival, we were mesmerised by the stories shared about the incredible history of the artefacts uncovered during the archeological excavations undertaken as part of the restoration process. The rooms and common breakfast/ relaxation areas are breathtaking in their modern design and functionality, but still retain the authenticity of the original buildings from the 1800's. A unique stay we will never forget.

We had the most wonderful time at The Barracks — such a beautiful atmosphere and very lovely rooms. John and Kim went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The drinks, platter and homemade treats were fabulous and the breakfast absolutely delicious. Every detail was thoughtful and full of care. Thank you for looking after us so well.

An absolutely perfect stay—the room was beautiful and very comfortable, with freshly prepared breakfast. It's just a 1-minute walk to the jetty for trips to Maria Island. Everything was wonderful, and I'd highly recommend it to every friend visiting here！
