It’s a lovely place fora romantic meal, the service was excellent also, we both had the fish and chips which and the fish was overcooked which was a shame, you could see immediately the batter was a very dark brown and then shattered as you tried to cut into it, all the more annoying was the table next to us ordered the same and it was perfectly cooked.

We spent a lovely couple of hours in the beer garden which was really pretty with lovely views of York Minster. The food was great and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Absolutely love this place inside and out, the beer garden is a great place to sit and relax with a drink, inside is tastefully decorated with friendly and efficient staff, as a regular visitor to York I always make my way here

The food is excellent the staff are amazing Mike made our visit worth while he heard our conversation that it was our 50th birthday and recommend the best wine which complimented all our food choices.

Fabulous food and excellent staff! They even had a water bowl and a piece of beef for our doggy.

We had a lovely couple of hours here just as restrictions are lifted and could eat drink outdoors! The food was lovely staff very friendly and a nice atmosphere.

Came here for my birthday. I can honestly say the staff here are heaven. The best bar staff I have ever witnessed. So friendly, welcoming and FUN! I love them. I would definitely come back. Comfortable, warm beer garden. Please visit! ❤❤

Great place although the service was poor. All going well until about 9pm, then had to wait over 30 minutes for our drinks to be delivered, despite being told three times that ‘they were on the way’.
Go if you want a good atmosphere in a good location. Don’t go if you want good service.

Came here with my boyfriend for lunch and a pint so cannot comment on the hotel. The pub itself is lovely and cosy and the staff are very friendly making for a pleasant atmosphere. We both had a pie (we are very picky on what constitutes a good pie! ) and we'll were very pleased with our meal. The local ales were kept well. Would definitely recommend for a hearty meal.

Stayed here for one night after going to the Shakespeare Rose Theatre. The pub is quaint and the staff are friendly. Our room and en suite were a both a bit small and the bed and floor boards were very creaky. The room was clean and there were decent facilities (kettle, teabags, biscuits etc). The location is excellent, the minster is just at the end of the road. Unfortunately we didn't manage to sleep very well because of the noise. We could clearly hear other guests walking around above us and people talking in the room next door. The noise from the street was also loud. The windows are quite old and thin, so it didn't seem to make much difference whether they were open or closed. The bin lorry came at 5.15 and was extremely loud, this was then followed by the sound of barrels being rolled about.

Quaint pub in the centre of York. You'll find this little gem tucked away in the tiny little back streets next to the city walls. Nice selection of real ales and it has that quintessential British feel about it. The landlord was very polite and friendly which always makes you feel a little more welcome.

Stayed at lamb and lion for one night. Lovely big room spotlessly clean. Fantastic location right next to York minster. Really nice beer garden to rear tho this is very busy most of the time and can be difficult to get a seat. The layout of the pub is quite quirky with lots of small rooms and lots of steps that could be a problem if you have mobility issues. Good selection of beers and ciders and not too pricey. Breakfast was served in the bar area with coffee toast and cereal followed by a delicious full English. I would definitely return to the lamb and lion.

Personal favourite in York. Beautiful smoking area and friendly staff. Food is good if u want a nice meal. Can be a bit pricey for what it is some times but I generally finds its worth the money. Reasonable portions and good flavour more often than not. I recommend them as a place to go for a drink and meal especially during the good weather.

Had a wonderful evening meal with a group of friends (11of us). Last minute arrangement all handled efficiently and with good humour making our evening very enjoyable. Thank you guys.

Small very atmospheric hotel. Very comfortable and cosy. Good food available. Down a lane really close to York Minster. Ideal for all touristy sights. Parking ten minutes away.

Yummy Sunday Roast and great service from Charlotte. Menu limited on Sundays but if you fancy a traditional roast, go! Lots of different rooms and a beer garden to choose from.

Didn't stay at the hotel but had a meal here, lovely view of the Minster from the garden but my main reason for posting this review is that the trio of sausage, mash and gravy was OUTSTANDING! I need the recipe for the ale gravy, the best I've ever tasted, wow!

Really nice, upmarket place. We popped in for an unexpected breakfast (we crashed the overnight guest breakfast), but we were treated really well. The service was top notch and no complaints about the food.

Perhaps our most expensive pub experience, but good. Fish and chips were good, the fish — exceptional, chips sparse and not hot & crispy. Perhaps ditch the cute mesh baskets, they only hold about 12 fries.

Over the years been here multiple times. Great if you can get a booth. Good beers lovely beer garden for the long nights. Not ate here but told good.

One of the best burgers I've ever eaten. The staff were very accommodating, seating and serving four of us quite late and close to when they stop serving. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the meal and beer. Great music on too.

Beautiful old pub tucked away close to the city walls and a five minute walk from the Minster. Great atmosphere and rooms to stay over in as well.

Famous pub on city wall. Good beer and excellent food. (Portions on the small side) though nicely cooked and presented. Well worth a visit, very clean and good toilet facilities. Maybe a bit cramped for wheelchair users.

I stayed in the Lamb and Lion Inn earlier this week and it was lovely. Staying in a superior room which was en suite, warm and secure was great and what made it even better was the period nature of this 250 year old location. I would certainly recommend the hotel to travellers of personal and business varieties to York without hesitation. The staff are warm and welcoming and it's a great place to stay.

Went for a meal on New Year's eve, because the Refectory lost our reservation! They were kind enough to fit us in, we were a bit concerned that we may have to rush, but it wasn;t the case. The food was delicious, staff very friendly, the atmosphere was relaxing and warm. And the bill was quite light for a 3 course meal. Would definitely recommend.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Lamb and Lion. You couldn't get a better location. 1 minute walk to the Cathedral, less than 10 min walk to the Shambles, and about 5 to the gardens. Staff was great and really accommodating, and the room was very clean. Would definitely recommend. Oh… And 10/10 breakfast included in the cost of the room!

Stayed 2 nights and had 2 meals. Very good location, food and service, however the room we were given was on the top floor, was small and not particularly well finished, e. G. Multiple lights did not work. That said the other rooms on the website look in much better condition.

Very olde worlde pub by the walls and central to York. Several rooms but only one small bar with a small but good selection of ales. The outside area is pretty stunning with views across to York Minster. Prices for beers are slightly above average for York.

Booked to stay on 21st Dec for one night our room was right at the top but due to health couldn’t manage the stairs, but a lovely Lady called Holly ran around and arranged a room on the first floor for us, breakfast was hot and very tasty and evening meal was outstanding. All staff were very friendly. Once again thank you Holly for all you did for us it was much appreciated. Would definitely stay here again.

Classic English pub located near York Minster. Pretty charming and atmospheric with a few nooks and parlours to spend a few hours. Good for both dining or drinks only. Decent beer/drinks selection, great British pub food as well.

A lovely, typical pub nestled along the city walls. The rooms are small but nice, some with a lovely view onto the city, Minster, and/or walls. The food is absolutely delicious — I recommend the burger and hand-cut chips. Good selection of drinks and friendly staff.

Stayed here for two nights to celebrate our anniversary. Rooms are on the small side but loads of character and charm. Excellent food and a good range of beers. Epic breakfast and fantastic beer garden. Really enjoyed it and will definitely return.

I have been there 4 times. I love the terrace. The food there is reasonably priced, but there isn't much variety of beers. Service is ok and fast.

Lovely staff and very warm and friendly building, what more could you expect, I don't understand people who give this place a negative review. Its not small its cosy and feel good. Very nice and friendly service. Will definitely look to stay again.

Sadly my experience of the Lamb & Lion was underwhelming! I arrived early so they kindly took my bags. I had a drink in the bar which was pleasant and staff welcoming. I visited the loo before going out and, quite frankly it was absolutely filthy. So not a good start. I always judge a pub or hotel by the cleanliness of the loos and I think a lot of people do too? When I arrived back and fought my way through a crowded bar to check in — fine, I can live with that; then to be shown up to a poky little single room with a sticky floor I found it unacceptable and knew it was not going to be a nice experience walking bear foot, for example to visit the miniscule loo and shower. The stairs leading up to the room were dirty and it was not a good start. In the room, with just a tatty and chipped three legged stool as the only seating, it was more like a boarding house than a £209 for the night "luxury" single room. At this point I decided I couldn't stay so booked a seat back home to London on a train about an hour later. I went down to the bar and the manager was very apologetic and offered immediately to either cancel my debit payment or return me the cash. Because of time constraints I chose cash. Sadly for me in the dash to the train I must have inadvertently lost the cash he refunded but this is very much down to me. 1. Yes, without question, they refunded the money 2.

Just arrived in York today and we were recommended to visit lamb and lion. We have just enjoyed a well cooked meal and two pints for two tired travellers.

Delicious British cuisine. We were there for a drink and snack, the beef and horseradish sandwich was hearty and rare. Good outside space.

A lovely old pub right beside York city walls. Great beer and a wide selection of drinks served by friendly staff. On a short break in York and we've made this our unofficial local as it's such a relaxed and friendly place to while away a few hours. Fantastic beer terrace with views of York Minister.

The Lamb & Lion Inn is very well located at one of the city Gates. The beer garden is beautiful located, snug against the old city wall. Inside the atmosphere is cosy, not traditional pub-like. There's a good selection of beers and a good selection of pub-quality food.

Really nice place to drink. Right by the walls in the shadow of the Minster. A wonderful place to meet friends.

Lovely father's day lunch. The outside seating was enjoyable and backed up to the city wall, with people walking on top. Had a delicious pork with stuffing and apples sandwich. Despite being very busy, the service was good.

It was an excellent experience. The food and drinks were amazing and the service was even better. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. We had the attic room and it was very nice. It has a sorta rustic feel while maintaining excellent cleanliness. It was such a great experience and I only wish we had more time. Thank you Lamb and Lion for a great time!

Ow dear. Not a particularly busy time… Roast potatoes missing from one Sunday roast and here we have an uncooked (rock solid) one on the other plate! We were sat outside but the food was cool before it even reached us… Well done beef ordered but only came medium cooked. Yup, not coming here for food again! You've been warned… Staff were friendly though.

Great location, close to the Minster and Shambles. Food was good. Staff friendly and helpful. Although it was cool and windy at street level the roof garden was a real suntrap and we enjoyed a very pleasant couple of hours chatting, eating and drinking a cold Aspall's cider in the warmth of the spring sunshine. This place gets busy, locals use it as well as visitors, which is always a good recommendation. Great experience will visit again when in York.

The beat beer garden in the city centre, with great views of the minster. Food is expensive. Watch out for the really steep, dodgy stairs getting into the beer garden!

Had a nice pint of local York Brewery beer in the lovely beer garden, overlooking the Minster. Recommended.

Me and two friends had a lovely evening meal recently. Food was top draw and the service was very professional and timely. Atmosphere was nice. Venue is dog friendly.

All I can say is go for the home made steak pie, not only does it taste fantastic but it was that large you dont have to eat for another week.

Sat in a lovely little room woth about 10 friends and enjoyed great drinks! The outside area was great too, even though some drinks can set you back quite a lot.

Very friendly staff and a nice environment to be in. The pub looks very cosy, and the garden is set away from the road behind the city walls so is nice and quiet. A good selection of local beers on tap with some guest ales too. Didn't eat here although the food looked very nice.

Very nice beer garden behind and upstairs butting on to the wall. Good selection of drinks and food. Also has a cosy cubby hole dining table which is good for groups.

Nice cosy pub with some great food. They had run out of a few things on the menu which was a shame, other than that though it was great.

Have been here a few time. Last time we had a lovely evening on their fine beer garden. This time we had a quick drink and left! The tables inside were sticky and there was no atmosphere at all.

Worst food in York Ever have one of those places where you don't listen to your gut, then you're upset with yourself when you don't? This was that place. As soon as we placed our order my gut yelled, I didn't listen. We ordered a salad and a burger. The person that took our order was so rude. Everyone has bad days, but this wasn't the case with her. We were just plain bothering her. I looked past that because I was hungry. The salad was old and wilted. The burger tasted satisfactory. The chips that accompanied the burger were way under cooked. The ketchup served was in a Heinz bottle but, I know my ketchup. This was not Heinz! Back to the problem, the salad. We notified what I assume to be the manager and instead of working with us he went into the back and brought a sample of the lettuce they use. Essentially saying that we were liars. AND! I was not impressed by the "fresh" sample he brought out anyway! I knew we weren't getting anywhere with our concerns so I turned to this review to warn you people. There are many great restaurants in York, no need to waste your time on this one.

We went because it was voted a great Camra pub on Thursday 21st July 2011 and were shocked it had run out of real ale at 8pm only offering guiness wine or spirits so we quickly moved on to 3 legged mare then guy fawkes Ale there was very good. The lamb and lion needs to do better to ensure they have ale on tap.
