Picturesque country house. Rooms are a bit tired and in need of refurbishment. We were also in a wing of the hotel that didn't have much lighting and it was bit of a struggle getting in when pitch black. However well worth a stop over if you need somewhere for the night.

A nice old historic hotel with a lovely bar terrace overlooking a lake. Rooms are nice but cleaning not to usual Mercure high standards. Food in the bar was reheated, edible but I've had much better in cheaper hotels. Breakfast buffet on the first morning and cooked to order on the second. Would use again due to the location.

A beautiful hotel, set in an idyllic location. Currently undergoing some refurbishment. We had a great time. We ate in the bar as the restaurant was busy. Food was good. Our rooms were clean, very spacious, comfortable and we had a great rest. The staff were very helpful, despite preparing for a wedding on site.

Just been to a lovely wedding here. Some great old stone buildings surrounded in lovely grounds for some great picture opportunities. Food was great and the staff were very polite and helpful. The only possible improvement needed would be some air conditioning in the main function room. But overall a very lovely place.

Excellent location for weddings and receptions, insufficient conditions of the rooms for equipment and cleaning. Not suitable for those who use hotels for work. Menu Limited though of good quality.

Beautiful building in a great location. Undergoing refurbishment since the recent acquisition by Mercure. Will justify 5 stars when completed. Good food, nice bedrooms, good bar.

Fantastic afternoon tea. Very pretty hotel and grounds. Be lovely for weddings.

Came for afternoon tea a few weeks ago, my daughter and her partner went 2 weeks ago. We both felt that the venue was beautiful but the afternoon tea was a serious let down… the sandwiches well what can I say… fresh salmon, not everyone's choice, cheese and pickle and ham and something… not entirely sure what! And all of the cakes were shop brought! Feel seriously let down by the whole experience, will not be recommending.

Great place. Not too busy when I stayed so the staff were a bit sparse. The breakfast was great and served by charming staff. Dinner at the bar was definitely below par. Rooms were large and well equipped, veering towards the tawdry.

Attended my friends baby shower at this venue. The grounds were lovely and the room was done out very nicely. Beautiful buildings!

When you drive in, it’s very picturesque… and that’s the good part! This hotel is so bad that it should not be open for business as there are so many areas that require maintenance, repair or replacement. Ceiling are down in the first floor hallway, our bedroom (oriel four poster room) looked like it was going to be next to have the ceiling fall in as it had a huge bowing split in it which has clearly happened once the professional photography advertising the room. Our bathroom was smaller than most cloakrooms and didn’t even have a wash hand basin in it! The whirlpool bath facility did not work and the bath was badly stained. The shower was a hand held attachment with no wall fixings! The flat screen TV was no bigger than a laptop screen and very old. There was a sparse tea tray and certainly not as advertised as it had no coffee maker, no fruit bowl, no water and no fridge! There were no bath robes and one towel for double occupancy! The room certainly required a thorough clean as there was many cobwebs at high level. The condition of the room mirrored the condition of the hotel as everything needs a bloomin good clean. We ventured into the cellars which were flooded to a 2 inch depth! Many roof tiles have slipped or are missing. The staff all appear to be mindless teenagers who do not know the first thing about service or the runnings of a hotel. Hopefully another hotel group will buy it and make it the very special place it could be.

Had an afternoon tea today. The hotel, food & staff were all excellent. Very impressed.

Lovely building, lovely setting, but evidently poorly run. Lots of small, relatively straightforward, maintenance tasks had not been carried out, and this lack of attention to detail detracted from any sense of quality. The staff were well-meaning but would benefit from some professional training, and, as with a previous reviewer, they confused mine and my colleague's bills, as well as trying to charge for breakfast when it was included, and not apologising when this was pointed out. Overall, disappointing — this place could be amazing but needs some active leadership.

Get comfy, this is a rather long tale. I am not one to post reviews, so for me to do so on this occasion means there is something very wrong about how this establishment is being run. I urge anyone reading this not to ever consider staying at this hotel. 1. The toilet in the room didn't flush. 2. The general state of the bathroom was tatty. 3. The radiator in the bedroom was noisy. 4. The pillow was flatter than a pancake. 5. The food menu lacked choice (maybe put this down to me being fussy but once I started seeing problems, others jumped out). 6. After voicing my dissatisfaction, I was fobbed off with two free drinks. This was an insult as I don't even drink alcohol. 7. Upon being moved to another room, at least the bed was better. 8. The bath had mould. 9. The showerscreen seal was split at the bottom. 10. Tiles were cracked. 11. The sink had a large crack in the bowl. 12. I was served coffee for breakfast and even that was cold. I didn't dare take a chance on having anything more. 12. Upon checking out, my reservation was confused with my colleagues reservation.

Wonderful 16th century hotel with oak beams, spiral staircase, massive stone walls and bags of character. Our room was large, clean with an invigorating shower and a comfortable canopy bed. The staff gave 100% to make our stay very enjoyable. Did not meet the chef but the food he produced was delightful. Looking forward to our next visit.

This place was stunning. Rooms were clean and spacious and very warm and cosy. Would definately book again.

Awful place. Ruined my wedding with various issues, mainly no bar stock and food was over an hour late and also incorrect. Do not be fooled by the beautiful surroundings, the rest if it doesn't come close.

A warm welcome and friendly staff. Beautiful grounds inside and out. Historic rooms in shared space, a modern bar and modern bedrooms — a good combination. Loved the wood panelled lounge and that food could be served there as well as in the bar during the day.

Being a big traveller and not picky the hotel itself was very quirky. The dinner at night was top class and generous portions. The service was also excellent. However disappointed with Breakfast. Food and service was very poor. Presentation was poor. Staff were young and very unprofessional. When checking out it was like he an obstacle course walking over leads as cleaner had Hoover lead wrapped around everywhere proper H&S hazard. Just a few areas for improvement otherwise beautiful hotel and good views of lake. Would definitely stay again.

Lovely buildings and setting. Rooms are ok, mine was spacious and generally clean. However, it was a bit ropey and in need of a refresh. The bed could do with being replaced. The desk chair could also do with being renewed — trying to work in the room was not comfortable because of the knackered chair. The room was freezing on arrival. I had to put the little electric wall heater on full-blast all night just to get it to be almost warm. Great potential, but is lacking attention to detail.

Beautiful environment with a leisurely atmosphere in the overall facility. But the room type has new old, no barrier-free facilities. Special designation of room type required.

The hotel is very picturesque, and beautiful to look at. And the breakfast in the morning was lovely. However unfortunately the double bed we slept on was actually two singles pushed together, and the mattresses were so uncomfortable we spent most the night awake as we could feel the springs. We got woke in the morning to what sounded like an alarm, but think it was the boiler kicking in Also only half the lights worked in the room. However most the staff seemed friendly.

I’ve had to stay here a few times now for work, it’s run down, the heating is either on full all the time or doesn’t work. I’ve just checked out because the room I was in was so noisy I couldn’t sleep — they need to fix the heating. And hire more experienced and helpful staff. Honestly, avoid.

Very friendly staff. Always helpful even if very short staffed. Food excellent ambience excellent. Only disappointment didn't see any ghosts. Definitely book again.

Lovely function rooms, beautiful bar area with nice views over a large pond. Staff were amazing, bar staff in particular. I have attended this venue twice now for functions and both were enjoyable outings. Would recommend for weddings or Christmas parties. Only downside is the prices for drinks is rather high.

Absolutely loved this place. Stunning in every way. Great historical room, staff couldn't do enough for us and the location was beautiful; right next to a lake and close to places to get food.

We stayed here for a wedding ceremony and reception. The food was amazing, and the place itself was beautiful. Would definitely recommend it!

Had a truly delicious afternoon tea. The service was brilliant our waiter was smiley and helpful. The food was faultless. Will definitely be going back. Well worth the money.

We had a pleasant stay at the hotel and a meal in restaurant. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The evening meal was very tasty and not too unreasonably priced. We skipped breakfast as other reviews had started it was expensive from what it was.

It's a very nice hotel place nearby Telford, easy to reach by car. The room was quite big, with a large comfortable Bed and Clean bathroom. It all looked very nice. The staff was very nice, too. I loved it and can highly recommend it.

Not a great experience. We walked into the reception and the receptionist shouted instantly "You can't check in until 2pm" before we'd even spoken, even though we'd already called to discuss the fact that the wedding we were attending started at 2pm and we would be travelling 3 hours to the venue with nowhere else to change. In fact all the staff that we interacted with in the hotel were pretty rude (with the reception of the bar staff). The bar ran out of beer and had to sell warm bottles half way through the evening. The electrics in our room tripped at 2am leaving us with no light, when we called the reception no one answered all night. When we reported the issue in the morning we were told that the handyman wasn't in today and there was nothing they could do. At breakfast the hotel decided it was a good idea to only have one staff member in the restaurant meaning the poor woman was so stressed out she was once again rude to everyone. All in all pretty poor. (The wedding was fantastic but the hotel experience was shocking)

Lots of history to the building, set in lovely grounds. A warm and helpful welcome on arrival. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The dinners are lovely in a beautiful banqueting room. The trio of puddings is a must. Breakfast caters for everyone with cooked breakfasts and continental selections. A lovely place to stay.

Very nice setting, seems popular for weddings. Friendly staff & decent rooms. Bar isn't to glamorous but it's better than nowt. Decent hotel if your in the area.

Nice quiet location with lots of character In the building. But housekeeping needs improving.

We had a four day break last summer (2015) … Our room was not one of their best… It was superb. I'd like to see their better rooms! Breakfast included in the tariff was very hearty and comprehensive. It was the perfect place to stay to enjoy the world heritage attractions around Telford.

Return visit, glad the radio was fine from the breakfast room! Lovely room on 2nd floor up the wonky spirl staircase. Looking forward to a 3rd visit.

A quaint hotel, set back from the road. The access road could do with some TLC (Unsure of owned by them or council) The hotel itself appears to have been a large Manor house, the rooms in the old section where I stayed feature exposed beams and are accessed by a spiral staircase.

Excellent Hotel and great staff.

Nice hotel with brilliant atmosphere — plus ideal venue for weddings.
