Pleasant hotel with pleasant staff. It is slightly overpriced in my opinion given its location and room size we had. 4 stars is generous but 3 stars would have been churlish. Tastefully decorated. Superb breakfast.

Stayed here on the weekend for my birthday. What a great place it was to stay. Room was very big and hotel was clean throughout. Breakfast was great and service was superb from arrival. Can't fault this place and would defiantly recommend it. Location was also great.

They were friendly and attentive to the smallest details. Very luxurious rooms, a perfect get away by the seaside away from the busyness of town and gunwharf. Although I went a year ago!

Took my girlfriend here for a 'special' night, to really spoil her, and at £225 for 1 night I felt guaranteed I could deliver just that, but oh how wrong I was! Stayed in room 7 which smelt of wee and sick, and it didn't seem to be the same as the pictures I'd looked at, so I complained to the girl on reception who checked and told me somebody had put us in the wrong room, apparently we were supposed to be in room 5. After some phone conversation I spoke to the manager who told me I was in the right room, but I found the whole thing a bit fishy, I mean why did the girl on reception say we'd been put in the wrong room to begin with? The room in my opinion was worth not a penny more than £120 and that's if it was odourless, and that's still a generous offer. Lesson learnt, will never go back again.

Absolutely loved it… Staff very helpful, no problems with parking, rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Plenty of choice for breakfast and food freshly cooked. Hotel and dining area clean and bright definitely worth paying a little bit extra for.

I loved it here. We had the in room bath which was lovely, breakfast was good and my emails to arrange a couple of extras were dealt with promptly. My only criticism is the lady that worked during the evening of our stay was miserable and borderline rude.

We were very happy with this hotel. The breakfast was good and well presented. Only complaint would be insufficient hooks.

My partner and I stayed one night, found the staff very helpfull/friendly, breakfast was delicious, room clean and comfortable, we had a sunken floor bath, enough room for two but would not have wanted it for a week overall experience rating ; Excellent!

We had the executive king room with in floor bath. The room was a nice size as well as clean, and the TV by the bath was a nice touch. The only things I could think of that were not perfect were the view, which was overlooking flats and houses which they can't do much about, and the range of channels on the TV by the bath tub, which only had kid channels and news (which is weird because they don't accommodate children here) but the main TV by the bed had a full range of freeview channels. Other than that, a fantastic stay. Alot of reviews on here were quite harsh when I was reading prior to my stay, but the staff were all accommodating and lovely, the breakfast was great and responsibly sourced, the room was a great size, the bed was comfy and the location was a small walk from some rock gardens and a beach which was lovely. Not sure what else you could ask for really!

One night get away. Picked the Clarence hotel late Fri 7/7 online, as the girlfriend and I needed to get away for a change of scenery and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. We travelled down by motorcycle fearing we would have to park on the road but luckily we could squeeze them in a corner of the tiny car park. Upon entering we were greeted by a most courteous member of staff who showed us to room 2 a very spacious and clean room with a lovely en-suite bathroom and as it turned out a very comfortable bed. Breakfast in the lovely dining room was very appetising the following morning and set us up for the day. I would not hesitate to book here again.

I stayed at The Clarence Hotel on New Years Eve. The room was on the second floor (no lifts) but wasn't difficult to walk up to, as the staircase was beautifully wide. The room was large, with charming uncluttered decor (I particularly liked the monkey wallpaper). In an unusual twist there was a short 8 steps stair way within the bedroom to a bathroom complete with a large walk in shower and free very nice L'occitane toiletries. There were also bathrobes and slippers in the wardrobe. The free breakfast in the morning was lovely, freshly cooked and hot! With as much cereal/toast/fresh fruit as you wanted. It is comfortably less than five minutes to the beach (or about a minute and a half if you're inclined to run it! ) The staff were beautifully polite, efficient and did things with a smile and very pleasant graciousness. Would I change anything? Just one thing. There is a warning to keep the door closed of the bathroom because the steam could trigger the fire alarms. I could see why after a shower, because it was almost impossible to see in the bathroom, but you couldn't open the door and the ventilator fan went on for about 20-30 minutes each time you turned it on and it was loud (you would need to turn up the television a little if you were watching it), but that really was the only thing that wasn't great. Would I go again? Definitely! (I'm already looking…)

Such a lovely place to stay, really relaxed and quiet and sooo close to lots of lovely things to do. And alot closer to Gunwharf than we realised. Staff and friendly and helpful and generally a really lovely place to stay.

Nice room, good sized shower. Great service, lovely breakfast. Only problem is thin walls, so noise can travel.
