My family is from Hilo, but my husband and I recently moved to the mainland. We, and a lot of extended family, were back and things were a little crowded and hectic, so my husband and I needed a place to stay with some privacy and a central location. The Kama'aina Inn was the perfect choice! We got the real taste of Hilo and Old Hawaii nostalgia that we missed so much. Penny, Tip, and Loke (if you're lucky to be staying when she's in town! ) give you real aloha spirit. Immaculately clean rooms (the geckos are trained to poop OUTSIDE only! ;), delicious chocolate banana bread and fresh fruit from the farmers market, Penny's ukulele during the day, and the absolute best water pressure in the showers I've ever had staying anywhere! There are so many great shops and restaurants within close walking distance, I got the chance to see how Hilo is growing. And oddly enough we both had to admit we actually missed the coqui! They helped us sleep again! Highly recommend staying here as your base to explore the whole Big Island!

Some have mentioned no TV as a negative, but I see it as a positive to get outside and walk around and explore the town! There are so many great shops and restaurants within close walking distance. Even though I grew up in Hilo, it was really exciting to stay at the Kama'aina Inn, like I was experiencing it brand new. Highly recommend staying here as your base to explore the whole Big Island!

As always this is my favorite part of my visit. I love Hilo and this Inn, sad that I can't stay longer.

Our stay at the Kama'aina Inn was wonderful. Tip And Penny are so kind and accommodating. We booked last minute but definitely had a great stay.

Last minute booking for a few nights as I had forgotten to get reservations before hand. Staff are very helpful and easy to talk to. Room came with a queen and a full bed for 2 adults and a toddler. The hotel is relatively small with only a handful of rooms which means its nice and quiet. Situated in the downtown area with lots of restaurants within walking distance (Lucy's and pineapples are both great). Only downside was the lack of AC which sucked during the day but once the sun went down it wasn't to much of an issue.

The rooms were clean and spacious. The owners were great friendly kind people. Wonderful banana bread, papayas, bananas for breakfast. Would definitely stay here again. In a central location close to many nice restaurants in Hilo.

This was a wonderful place with good people. We spent 10 days here right in the hub of downtown Hilo. Penny and Tip made us feel like family. Part of the appeal is the way the inn is laid out, with a central gathering area where guests and owners congregate. You could always find company, fruit, and Penny's ever-changing banana bread.

Great place. Clean and comfortable small six units in garden setting. The owners, Tip and Penny, are very friendly (even by Hawaiian standards) and provide avocados and other foods that they grow. Convenient location for walking the sights and restaurants of Hilo. They have umbrella loaners.

Very friendly owners (with free papayas and bananas from the garden! ), very centrally located and spacious room. The only downside is probably the frogs, which are very noisy at night, because also the provided earplugs do not help much. Personally, it didn't bother me so much, but my noise-sensitive girlfriend had quite a problem with it.

This place is great. Penny and Tip make sure you feel very welcome. Next time we are in Hilo we will definitely stay here again.
