I love this hotel. Not only is it friendly and fun to stay there, it is also worth as much a visit as MOMA or the Met.

Great house cats, unique artwork and friendly… Great value too!

I really enjoyed my stay here last week, The bed was comfy, the room had funky decor and the shower room and toilet were always clean. Good coffee too!
Best part: Topsy my new cat BFF.
Worst part: I accidentally left a sentimental t-shirt in B-floor shower room overnight and it vanished. If any guests (around 16th — 17th April) accidentally picked up my black and white Kite t-shirt, please get in touch and I'll be happy to cover return postage and a little extra!

Very nice people, great location, lovely cats. The hotel is near from 23st station, a good point to visit the most important places in Manhattan.

This boutique hotel has so many great qualities. But, know it is not for everyone. The location was decent. It was an easy walk to 2 train lines, so helpful for weekend train closures. There were plenty of places to grab food, drinks, and snacks. Being situated next to a small college, the street was clean and safe. The owner and staff of the hotel were friendly. They answered questions easily and helped us feel settled. The stuff to know: It is a walk up, no elevator. The stairs are old and steep. It is an old NYC building, that brings quirks in areas. They are part of the charm! The shared bathrooms, for many rooms, keep the rooms inexpensive for NYC. That means it is always busy. The decor is eclectic and avant garde. It is not for everyone. We enjoyed it, immensely. But we heard murmurs from others. There are 2 cats, on site. That was a minor issue as we have allergies, but we knew before arrival, so crisis averted! Overall, the hotel was wonderful. We would stay again, but we will insist on a lower floor if we bring lots of luggage!

Very friendly people! We like the art that is on the walls… but most importantly, the beds and bathroom are clean. Our room has a view on 3rd avenue. Which is nice, but also quite noisy. As New York never sleeps! Some earplugs solved that quite ok.

My husband and I stayed for a few nights at the beginning of our East Coast to West Coast road trip; the location was great, right near Madison square park and easily a walk to most central tourist spots e. G The Empire State Building, Times Square etc. I absolutely adored the resident hotel cats; one in particular was super sweet and kept coming back to visit us! We stayed in room 14b which was a rainbow theme; it was very quirky — which we knew before we arrived, but I think possibly a little too much for our taste — it was recommended by a friend who stayed last October. The room felt quite cramped, and as we were travelling with lots of luggage for the road trip, it felt like there wasn’t really much room. My husband also got bitten quite badly in the night; we didn’t have windows open or anything, but the furnishings being quite dated we thought may have had something to do with it — perhaps bed bugs of some description? We also had to share a bathroom — I think this was probably the most uncomfortable aspect for me. Again, we knew all of this before we arrived, but the condition of the shared bathroom was a little disappointing. It smelt of urine the entire time we were there, and there was a clump of black hair stuck to the wall the entire stay; I saw it on the first day and thought urgh that must have just happened, but then when no one cleaned it off for the 3 days we were there, it was pretty grim.

Great little cheap hotel in The Gramercy! Cute kitties walk the halls, and rooms are decorated with very cool Lovcraftian art! Staff is very laid back and welcoming! Great place, I will stay here again!

You can’t beat the price an location. Make sure to bring your own soap/shampoo. Staff was wonderful, especially the four-legged staff. Bars and food were 5 steps away, and everything tourist-y was within walking distance I ended up getting engaged in our hotel room, overlooking the city.

We stayed there for a night. The decoration is really special and the building age. I don't know if on a long-term rooms are adapted. No elevator, air-conditioning a little weak and you can hear the street, thankfully rather quiet. Well located in the heart of Manhattan. Several levels of room, starting with those with toilets and showers in the hallway.

We booked a private room months ago. Our room had a single glazed window, partially open for air con machine so lots of noise from the street, and the loud music played from bar right under us until 2am. We asked if we could change rooms but were told they were full, and we had been given that room as we had only booked to stay for 1 night — A poor reason given how far in advance we booked. My wife had no sleep at all due to the noise and how cold it was in the room, a paper thin sheet and a small thin throw was certainly not adequate for a chilly night. Even with towels on top it was cold. It was also dirty. The cute artwork we had booked for, doesn’t make up for it. It was the worst place we have stayed in the western world (and that includes some very sketchy places around Europe). Would not recommend.

Simple but effective! Perfect location to have a fun night… several bars, restaurants all walking distance. The bar downstairs have amazing drinks! The front desk guys was very friendly and helpful. Have in mind that is a hostel/boutique kinda place, so is not too big. Every floor has two showers, one of them is with the toilet. It is nothing fancy, but I'll definitely stay here next time!

A hidden gem: Carlton arms is brimming with personality and an aesthetic that you can't fake. This place is absolutely covered in art in a way that really makes you feel like you are in the middle of the village (even if you are about 15 blocks north) at the height of it's expressive history. If you need and elevator, room service, shampoo, adequate lighting, or to otherwise be pampered don't stay here. It's not lavish, it's not quite beautiful, but it's a place you really should stay.

My home whenever I go to NY… single, with friends, husband, pregnant, with baby… always the best option. Great staff! Fantastic location! Superb art!
My baby daughter fell in love with the cats and the xmas lights! And couldn't stop exploring the hidden details in the rooms!
This place simple makes me happy.

If anyone needs a good place to stay in NYC, this place was awesome! The price is right, it's in a great section of town, and is really cool. Definitely recommend to my artsy friends as the place is totally covered in artwork.

The Carlton Arms… I can not say enough GREAT things about this place; It's not for everyone, but I've been stayin here, off and on for over 20 years. It's clean, it's creative over-the-top, the staff is awesome, it's affordable, and the house cats are your best friends (sort of).
