Locally owned, clean and comfortable beds. Price is excellent as well. Continental breakfast included but we headed out early for a flight.

"Onsite Parking" is laughable with about 10 spots for a 39 room hotel plus staff, otherwise you have to park on the street if it's available (I got there one a Monday about 5 pm and I saw people parked 2 steeets over parking with luggage because the street it was on was full) or across a busy 4 lane street that is partially under construction. It was honestly enough for me to eat the cost and just go somewhere else. I honestly picked this hotel due to the claim of the on-site parking, I don't do well with long walks to a place with a handful of baggage and am not the greatest at parallel parking. They were nice enough to send me an email saying I'd be reimbursed for the room due to the inconvenience, but I haven't seen it yet.

A awesome weekend getaway for my husband and I. All the comfort 's of home. Robes, a kuerig, phone charging ports in the nightstand.

While we were only here for one night, it was memorable! The check in staff was BEYOND welcoming. Room was nice, as described. Respectful of covid precautions.

Highly recommend for a weekend getaway. The inn is quiet and close to the airport. The Pizza Villa across the street had a friendly bartender and the pizza was even good cold the next morning.

Great historical appearance and kind staff. Also in a great location for easy access to the interstate.

My boyfriend and I are staying here right now with our service dog. We absolutely love it and both agree it's the best hotel we've stayed at in awhile. It's homey, well put-together in detail and just has an overall nice feel to it. The staff is great and the breakfast was really thoughtful and generous. I would definitely recommend staying here and will be coming back again! Thank you for making our stay great.

This is not your typical hotel, so don't expect Hilton or whatever. But it is very cute, the rooms are spacious and has it's own interesting character. Very clean and quiet. Very friendly and helpful staff at the front desk. They also have complimentary bottled water, coffee, tea and cookies 24/7. The breakfast can be better, unless all you need is a bagel, coffee and some fruit. The fruits were great though. I had some peaches and plums and skipped the bagel. There enough other food choices very close by if need a late night snack or cheap Chinese.

This was a nice Inn, but be ready to climb stairs! Once we made it up, we had a clean, spacious bedroom the bed was a little uncomfortable for my girlfriend but we slept fine. Our room came with a small, detached private bathroom (across the hall, locked with the room key so no one else used it). There's a lot of noise coming from the front, it's right across the street from the hospital so we heard quite a few sirens from ambulances. Not a bad area of town though! For a economical stay, not a bad choice in my opinion.

A great opportunity to step back in time! Extremely clean, great decor and historic Inn! Friendly staff… you won't be disappointed unless you are looking for a "chain" hotel on the Interstate!

This hotel is beautiful! The bed is so very comfortable and the pillows are heavenly. If you can, reserve room 7B. Yes its on the second floor — but totally worth the stairs. So Happy!

Absolutely adored staying here! 10 out of 10 would recommend! We stayed for 2 nights. The room was amazing when we first got there, feeling homey but elegant at the same time. The staff was perfect too! Of course this Inn has it's… differences. The bathrooms are not in the room, although there is a sink in the rooms. And there is no elevator so if you stay on the 3rd floor, it's a bit of a hike. But that's not a huge deal, the location is perfect and with the friendly staff and perfect amenities (did I mention daily breakfast! ) it's absolutely amazing.

(May 2018) My second time staying here (business trip), and just as delightful as the first. (March 2017) Charming, soothing, calm, enfolding. The Inn At St John, despite a short stay, has been a welcome respite during the workweek of business meetings. I loved that the continental breakfast is served until 10am and that there is a variety of whole pieces of fruit. My 3rd-storey room overlooked a road, and was very quiet. The heating worked well and there are (yay! ) bathrobes in the room. A very clean, comfortably elegant independent hotel / b&b. As to the stairs, if the Victorians could do it, so can we!

Excellent value, clean rooms, comfortable beds and friendly staff. I didn't have a car and it was about a 15-20 minute walk downtown. I also booked a room with a shared bathroom and found the bathroom to be clean and vacant whenever I needed it. Staff happily held my luggage for me after check-out while I went out for lunch. I would definitely stay here again.

Quaint place to spend a night in Portland. Bathrooms that aren't in room are a bit of a hassle. Bed sheets are a bit yucky. Complementary breakfast consists of a few pieces of fruits and packaged pastries along with nature valley bars. Offers free water and cookies which you can grab anytime. Decent value for the money.

This is a really great hotel. Rooms are clean and unique. The staff are extremely helpful and pleasant. Only had one small problem. The room we stayed in was next to the entrance so it was loud in the mornings. Other then that it was perfect.

Great location, rooms are very clean. The front desk staff was very friendly. Bed wasn't super comfortable but for the price you can't beat it. Fresh baked cookies always available in the lobby. Perfect if you're just looking for a place to sleep that's clean and quiet. Pay the extra $6 for a private bathroom.

If you’re looking for a cool, not too expensive, delicious (free cookies! ), and comfy place to stay in Portland, Maine… Stay here. (Or don’t, and then next time I’m in Portland, Maine there will be room here. ) The staff was chillin’. The breaky was excellent (donuts, yogurt, bagels, cereal, fruit, bars, you get it. ) The beds were comfy and clean. Really, it is the best. I’d sleep here again for sure.

Maybe the best value hotel in Portland! Staff were all very helpful and accommodating. Neighborhood is quiet enough, but a short walk from all the restaurants and bars downtown. Few rooms have a bathroom within them, as most have a private bathroom across the hall or a shred bathroom nearby. Having stayed in a room with a bathroom inside, this wasn't a concern and the price was still well worth the comfort and location. The inn provides breakfast, but there are many great cafes, bakeries, and restaurants for this as well. Food directories in the room cover the area well. Wi-Fi was high quality, even on corner of top floor. Room was spotless and spacious. The bed was a bit stiff, but sleep was still no issue. Would definitely recommend the inn to anyone looking for a great value stay in Portland!

Great place, fantastic value for the money. Room was extremely clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. Staff were beyond friendly and helpful — set up an extra air bed in our room no questions asked, called to let us know we'd left a phone charger behind after we checked out, etc. Free parking, breakfast in the morning, and cookies, coffee, and water throughout the day, all while costing less for the room than any standard chain hotel/motel in the area. And within an easy walk of pretty much everywhere in Portland. They'll definitely be our default for any trips here in the future.

Friendly staff, convenient location, and the best rates in Portland. This is our third visit staying here. The Inn may not be right for everyone. There is no elevator and some rooms do not have an attached bathroom. The rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. Free Wi-Fi is fast. Free breakfast has a good assortment. The staff is very helpful. An easy walk to downtown and Old Port so you can avoid parking issues. One of Portland's hidden gems.

2 night stay on 2nd floor, private bath. Room was clean, bed was comfortable and quiet enough for sleep. Front desk staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient. The decor was very quaint and reminded me of Europe. Would stay again if I needed to be near Maine Medical Center again.

Stayed in room 106, staff was amazing! The room was great, nice and well kept. Jetted tub was nice too :) if in Portland Maine you need to stay at this privately owned hotel!

The renovated rooms are amazing. Look right out of the early 1900s with modern amenities. Fantastic staff, great price and friendly helpful staff. Would gladly stay again.

I had to stay for an extended amount of time, for an interview this past week. Could not have been happier with the experience, the rooms are great and were easily the best value compared to other local bookings. I had no problem getting around town, it was close enough to walk and a short uber/lyft to anything else I wanted to see. Staff was always friendly and made everything a breeze. Would definitely stay again.

Great spot on the dodgey end of town. The Inn was beautiful, affordable and the room was clean and have everything that a spartan traveler like myself needs. I would have stayed longer had I not had a friend who lived in Portland who was free to host me. But I would definitely go back to that spot again.

This was a fantastic deal and the ideal place to stay in Portland. The staff was super helpful, there were free cookies in the lobby, and the rooms are very cozy. Downtown Portland is only a 10 minute walk away but this neighborhood is nice and quiet at night. I'd stay here again.

We recently enjoyed an overnight at the Inn. The staff were very friendly. The room. A large 1queen and 1 double bed with bath was cozy. They have a parking lot on site. Hot coffee, hot water for tea and hot chocolate available. Lots of bottled water in refrigerator. A wonderful extra. Thumbs up I will definitely return.

A breath of fresh air. No more sterile motels and so called inns. The rooms were excellent, sorry to here some whiners thought they were too small, but some people like to be bitches when it comes to reviews. Character, cosy, and clean is what matters. The Inn at St John has all three. The staff are the best. I have recommended this place to all my friends. Noted here is a sidebar with regard to jaded reviews. Mass-holes always find fault with something. My guess is that any negative viewpoint, regardless of weight, is coming from one of those jerks. Thanks for your hospitality.

I absolutely loved it here. It's touted as the oldest working inn in Portland and it still has it's old charm. The staff was incredibly friendly and the Continental breakfast was really nice. They also offer complimentary bottles of water all day long as well as cookies in the afternoon. However, consider yourself forewarned. There is no elevator and the stairs are a little narrow and uneven. The staff, though, is incredibly eager to offer help with your luggage. There's also no air conditioning in the main lobby, so it can get kinda warm. They have a portable one by the complimentary computer, but that's it. There are ac units in the rooms, so do fret. When I was booking my room, I had the option of a private bathroom or a shared bathroom. I went with private, but my bathroom was not attached to my room; it was down the hall. This still does not detract from my 5 star experience. It was just something different. The bathroom was clean, and had pink and green towels, which I thought was unique, you don't see that ever. My room was nicely sized with a full sized bed (it was just me) and I was on the "second" floor, which was actually the third floor. Like I said, the stairs are old and narrow and uneven, so take care when descending. There was also a mini fridge and a microwave, as well as a coffee maker. There was an ice bucket, but there isn't actually an ice machine available to guests, you just have to ask the front desk.

Really cute historical Inn. Had a first floor room with in-room bathroom. I think it was the smallest of the bunch. Room was cute, smelled a bit damp. Bed was comfy but sheets felt polyester. Breakfast was good if you don't like protein in your diet. Scratchy bathrobes but that's not really important. It was part of our honeymoon and it was romantic feeling enough but being on the first floor next to an entrance it felt less than private. Would only stay again with a cheaper Rate like we had this time. Couldn't imagine paying for a shared bath room, just get an airbnb fir cheaper.

A friend from NYC kind of panned this place saying she would not ever stay here again. Well my own experience could not have been more different from that. The super friendly staff who get along as well with each other as they do with guests to nice Wi-Fi thru out this building, use of a pc in the lobby, the great continental breakfast included and this place is very competitively priced compared to other places or hotel chains. I would gladly stay at Inn at St Johns when I make return trips up here from NYC. Two thumbs up, five stars and great overall lodging operation they run.

Great service and stay. Stayed in a twin room with shared bathroom. It's basically a private hostel, no frills, room. The shower is small, the room is small and a bit outdated/dingy. But that said, everything is clean, the staff is very friendly, they have a nice assortment of breakfast foods and cookies throughout the day. There is free parking and downtown is just a short walk away. At the price, it's definitely a great stay.

A great option for single travelers. There are cozy single rooms, small, but for one place is quite enough. Quick check in, courteous and friendly staff. Continental breakfast is included in the price. In addition, tea, coffee and water are always available. Portland Transportation Center (main bus station) can be reached on foot in 15-20 minutes. The old port is 20-25 minutes walk, but under the hill. The only downside of the hotel is the cramped shower cabins. For high or full people is absolutely unacceptable.

It's hard to believe that the Inn at St. John was under $150 per night considered the wonderful customer service, clean furnishings and lovely historic experience. The hotel is conveniently located within a brisk 15 minute walk of Congress Street. Travelers will be impressed by the warmth and personable nature of the front desk staff. For example, I came back to the hotel from a long walk and was immediately greeted with a cold bottle of water! The staff also made excellent dinner recommendations. The rooms are petite and appointed with simple, old-fashioned decor, however, I was comfortable for 1 night on my business trip. Breakfast, coffee and 24/7 cookies are included and cannot be missed.

Good location. Great atmosphere. Extremely accommodating staff. Continental breakfast, free parking. No elevator and a couple of flights of stairs but the staff is very helpful with luggage. I will definitely be back and highly recommend the Inn.

Excellent customer service, second to none! While being affordable with free parking and a buffet breakfast this gem is very close to the middle of the Old Port! With such excellent service it is a great place to visit. It is obvious the staff takes great pride in their work! I will definitely stay again when I am in Portland!

Very clean and cute restored building. We brought our German Shepherd and he loved it. I was very surprised somewhere so nice allowed dogs! Nice walking distance to Old Port. They had fantastically friendly staff too! Thanks again!

This place has a ton of character! We stay here every time we visit Portland. It's clean, locally owned, the staff is friendly and personable, it's in a nice location, etc. We've stayed in rooms with private and shared bathrooms, and both were very clean. It's a pleasant one-mile walk to Old Port with plenty of dining options along the way. This is a really great place to stay.

This was a really cute place! I never slept better in a hotel bed and the cookies were a definite plus! The staff was always friendly and helpful. Will definitely return if I'm in the area!

It's beautiful 100 year old hotel. My wife and I were very pleased with old world feel. The concierge were excellent. And free cookies too. I recommend the pizza place across the road.

The room was very nice and loved the little details. They really go above and beyond to make sure you feel welcomed. I also love that it is a historic building.

Impromptu trip to Portland this past weekend led us to the inn. It's truly a "hidden gem"; cozy, cute and they had complimentary cookies and water in the lobby. The staff was friendly and our room was clean. I was surprised by how quiet it was given that the room was right next to the lobby so that was definitely a plus.
The inn isn't in the center of Old Port but it certainly made for a nice walk.
I'd certainly recommend this hotel and would definitely come back and stay here.

Quaint little bnb is an affordable option when the rest of the town is booked during the summer. We don't mind the shared bathrooms or carrying luggage up 3 flights but others might. The breakfast part of the "BNB" is more continental, but for the affordability of the room, we would definitely start here again.

Beautiful building, out of the city center, decent breakfast, wonderful staff. A warren of rooms, some with private baths in the room or across the hall. A little dated but an interesting place to stay. Not too many mid-range options in Portland.

Lovely place! A bit far out from Old Port, but the walk was beautiful. Its clean and the bed was comfy. Free coffee in the lobby, too. Pretty good deal for the money.

I just love this place. It has so much character, the rooms are clean, cool, and cheap. The breakfast is good, staff is friendly, and the location is close to old port. This is the only place I stay when I spend the night in Portland. Can't be beat.

Excellent place! Super cool and old, Victorian style was cool in rooms and layout but the hotel wasn't stuffy or overdone. Stayed here for a weekend in a two person room, was spacious and clean, free breakfast was simple but good, and free coffee and other amenities like that. Very affordable (we had off-season rate, about $114/night with taxes and fees). Staff was nice and helpful. Location is awesome, 10 min to downtown and near the highway (but not loud) if you gotta go somewhere esle. Stay here if you can, sure a 2 star motel may be $30 cheaper but isn't right downtown and isn't as cool.

PRO: Affordable price. Staff were all friendly, they were trying to help. Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, cookies and coffee. Room was very clean, and we had our own private bathroom. Walking-distance to Downtown Portland. CONS: VERY NOISY! I couldn't sleep AT ALL because of car noise outside. It was really loud that my sister couldn't sleep at all either. We had to stop at several service areas the next day so we don't do sleep-driving. Bed was kinda small for two people. Small parking lot. We had to park other place. No elevators. Overall, my first impression of this place was very good. However, when it gets to night, it was not very pleasant because of all the noise from outside of the building. I could hear every car driving by. Travelers like me (from MD) who are looking some places to sleep in might want to look out for other place. If not, I think this would be the good 'affordable' place.

Quaint little European gem! I got the room as a treat for my girl because she deserves it and it didn't disappoint! Robes and free water were really impressive, and girl is now going to be the mother of my child because of that place!

I should have taken photos of the beautiful rooms here. I stayed here last summer and plan to stay here again. The hotel manages to keep each room unique, different bedding, different wallpaper, while keeping the entire feel of the hotel consistent: old-english, crisp, cozy, victorian, traditional, elegant, quirky Unfortunately for me, this place is very VERY friendly to people with dogs. I don't blame them for this, but I have a dog allergy and did not know if I could stay longer than one night (maybe next time I will try two nights). I slept well and opened up the windows to air the room out. I was only staying one night in the highest room because all rooms were booked. Place does not have an elevator so be prepared to stair climb, for people with a lot of suitcases. I ended my trip to Boston and Portland Maine in this very unique and wonderful hotel. Desk was kind. The beauty, peace, uniqueness, and hospitality of this hotel is unforgettable. Everyone that visits Portland should stay here at least once. My only suggestion is to maybe make some rooms off-limits for dogs?

My boyfriend and I first booked at The Inn at St John because it was really affordable but we will definitely recommend it to anyone on a budget that will be staying in Portland. The staff were all really friendly and genuinely seemed happy to help you. The rooms were clean and styled after the hotels original Victorian Era roots. The hotel also offers free breakfast every morning which was tasty and fresh. If you're a late sleeper though they always have free cookies, coffee and water in the lobby for guests! If you're looking for a stereotypical hotel this place is not for you and if you require an elevator you are out of luck, but personally I really enjoyed my stay here.

Beautiful old building, but well maintained. Staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful. Free breakfast options are great and proximity to Portland's West End is 10-15 minutes, walking. Really enjoyed my stay here.

Wonderful place to stay that's only 15 minute walk from downtown. We were a young couple on a low budget staying there on a tour along the east coast, and this was one of the nicest places we stayed. You must have some humility for what it is and sharing bathrooms and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The staff was great (love you, Grayson) and they offered to send the watch I left there back to me for free. Don't expect too too much of breakfast but I had no problem with it.

Quirky and friendly hotel within walking distance (or a quick Uber) of downtown Portland. Can't beat the value. Rooms are always very clean. Lots of choices to match your budget including en suite hotel rooms and rooms with shared bathrooms.

Nice place, but or first room didn't have a bathroom and we had to pay an extra $40 just to have a bathroom.

The Inn at St. John has some very quaint old world charm. The rooms are old fashioned, but in a pleasant way. The beds could be a bit bigger, but are at least comfortable. You even get air conditioning which is nice for humid nights or drowning out the street noise. Unfortunately it is on a busy street so can be noisy. The bathrooms are also separate, so you have to go through the hall to yours, but you can get a private one, so it isn't that bad. The staff was superb and very helpful with suggestions and directions. They have snacks and even nicer, water bottles available in the lobby all day and night, and the water bottles were great for exploring the city on a hot day. Unfortunately, the downtown is a bit of a walk through an area that feels a bit underdeveloped, though not dangerous. You have to walk past a hospital and lots of houses to get there, but there are also nice restaurants and good coffee places on the walk. A breakfast is included which includes tea and coffee, muffins, english muffins, toast, jams, and cereal. Nothing too fancy, but enough to get you filled up enough to make it to your lunch of lobster. Best of all, they are very dog friendly so it is a perfect place for bringing fido on your trip.

Beautiful rooms harkening to the original period for the building and bringing classy to the edge of downtown, walkable Portland. The staff is top notch, the breakfast is more than cold cereal and well presented at a serve-yourself cafe counter. They're pet friendly and have someone at the front desk 24/7.

Pros: Staff was wonderful, most professional and courteous i've ever experienced. Rooms very clean with a keurig in each room, an older hotel but well maintained. Easy access parking, pizza place and small store less than 100 feet away, very close to hospital. Cons: Very hard beds I mean really hard on a 1 — 10 scale (10 being concrete) they were a 8, no elevators (!? ) so get a 1st floor room, and worst of all while they did have a "discount" for people using the hospital nearby it was only $5.00. — Really — $5.00 better to give no "discount" at all, 180.00 for one night.

I've stayed here twice in the past year or so, and loved it both times. Super affordable, very clean and elegant, and a great location whether you are exploring on foot, by bus, or by car (there is parking! ). All of the staff are so friendly and helpful.

Very quiet, affordable and clean. It's known for being a historic hotel and its reflected by the interior design. Old-fashion style. Our room was small. There was a lot of extra included such as parking, Keurig coffee maker in-room, complementary breakfast.

Not happy. Room was tiny for the price and did not offer any outside smoking facility for the guests. I was on the 3rd floor over looking a parking lot and instead of taking a trip to the lobby level I opened the window and smoked outside being very careful. I was observed from across the parking lot by an employee also smoking and apologized. Next the in room phone rang and I was tossed out on my ear. No refund and a really nasty attitude from the staff. I tried to speak with the manager but he/she was no were to be found. Pleaded and even offered my smokes for them to hold and was confident once burned turn off the stove. No dice! They even were talking about calling the police if I didn't leave and I was being very nice. Tried to call back and got some guy at the front desk to again plead my side and to retrieve my nights paid rent and was hung up on twice, FYI his name was Tim. I know this because we share the same. Totally unprofessional! All in all the hotel is not worth your time. Yes they have large rooms but the beds I'm sure were bought at a yard sale. Kuto's to the maid service very responsive and pleasant. They also did some cool tricks with the linen, offered a robe even though very cheap and nice sides like soap and hair products. If your looking to stay in Portland on a reasonable rate do yourself a favor and drive 4 miles south to S. Portland. A few hotels on Rt. 1 that are chains but you will get the same price if not better and your dollar will go father.

This hotel was fun. Our room had a bathroom in the hall but it didn't seem to matter. Everything else was clean and proper. Had a historic feel that made you feel at home. Gluten free breakfast options were a great surprise for the gf. Would stay again. Great value.
