This was my first visit to the Whitehall and I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious room and proximity to Michigan Avenue.

This hotel is one of our favorites! Beautiful and you can’t beat the location!

Beautiful room. Reasonable rates. Perfect location. All around pleasant experience.

Would NOT recommend this hotel. For one the drinks in the fridge were expired and they still charged us for them after we had told them they were expired and nasty. Second my JBL speaker was stolen from my room after the house keeping ladies cleaned the room and I realized this after I had left. I called several times before I finally got in contact with someone and they were supposed to give me a call back and I still have not received a call and I stayed there back in June it is now November ridiculous! Also every time I call it goes straight to voicemail every time they transfer me to security.

Great location, comfortable beds, excellent service. Plumbing needed updated took forever for the water to get hot and the faucet drips. Otherwise I loved it.

This hotel was a big disappointment the room we book was not the room we received. Photos nothing like the room we had. From the time we arrived it was not a good experience. The lady at the front desk seen my husband and told him that this was not a party hotel. Mind you we from out of town and husband had camo pants and a tank comfy clothes for the 6 hr drive we just did. Advertising said free parking not true either come back after midnight and park on street for free and come back and pay @650am or $50a night for the parking garage. Now about the room was no mini information and had to call and get it. Not enough towels and asked for them and they was never brought to our room. Hot water handle came off and door to bathroom was missing door plate. We reserved a double queen room and room we received was a single queen. Just poor quality and customer service. Also no microwave. Expected more for the location and the cost. Also was told no deposit would be charged and that was also not true. Would not recommend this.

The room is not nice no trash bags there's food underneath the bathroom sink cheap shower clothes the phone doesn't work.

One block of Michigan Avenue it is a fun historic building. The rooms are quiet and spacious with very nice appointments. Very helpful staff and fast elevators!

No smoking. No party.

Beds are hard, sheets are not soft cotton, more like rough linen, pillows are crap, no coffee pot in the rooms, lighting in the rooms are horrible, there is absolutely nothing luxury about this place and I will not be recommending this hotel.

Great location but not prepared for a bus that had reservations months in advance only a few rooms were ready and although for view from my room was great windows were dirty and air conditioning auto turned on every half a hour and would wake you from your sleep.

Stayed two night leading into Labor Day weekend. Comfortable room, extremely courteous staff, enjoyed the stay very much! Reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the area. Would consider this as a top 3 option for another stay.

Not newly built, it is true, but absolutely clean and equipped with every comfort.
The location is great, you can't look better nearby if you also consider the price. It is often on offer on booking or other search engines, if you do not find discounted rooms wait to book and you will see that a few days before your stay will be lowered prices! In August we spent 110 euros a night plus taxes.
Rooms are quite large and for breakfast 100 meters to the left there is a comfortable Starbucks. The Wi-Fi is free and works great. I recommend it.

Out of all of my trips I've taken to Chicago this hotel has to be the best priced for its location. It might not be the fanciest hotel in existence but it makes up for it with a very very reasonably priced room in such a great location. The paint in our room could have used a touch-up but other than that there were no complaints at all.

The hotel is dated and starting a downward trend. The wallpaper is peeling off the wall in our room. The ac shuts off continually. The carpets are shot. It’s too bad. Sometimes the maids leave a full compliment of towels, sometimes not. (We do tip them each day) This was a decent place to stay 10-15 years ago. I just happened to have a personal safety device with me that checks for Carbon Monoxide. It was reading unacceptable levels of carbon monoxide. I notified the building engineer. He researched carbon monoxide some online and used my carbon monoxide detector to check out the hotel. They tried moving us to different rooms, but the carbon monoxide levels were still too high. We left. I asked for my money back, but I have not had any response yet. We went to The Talbot just down the street. No carbon monoxide at The Talbot! Plus The Talbot is much nicer and updated for about the same price.

Exactly what we needed. My boyfriend and I stayed here for only one night, but it was great! Locationally it was wonderful. Super close to shopping, and quick bites, but also close to enough to the red line for easy access to wherever you wanna go! It’s an older hotel, but I think that’s what we liked the most. Lots of character. Only bad I do have to say is that you have to call for ice which can take a while considering it’s a big hotel. But, I wish my trip to the Chi would have been longer; I’d stay here over and over.

Our stay at The Whitehall Hotel was wonderful! We arrived very late at night, but we were still greeted with a happy, smiling face! Check in was seamless, breakfast was delivered to our room desk the next morning, and the room was comfortable and clean. We visited the bar one evening and the service was fast and efficient. The seating area in the bar lounge was wonderfully decorated and had such character. I would recommend valet parking to make your stay easier. The valet service was excellent, but plan accordingly for price of valet parking so you are not surprised when you arrive. We used Uber to take us to our sites, but Taxis are lined up outside as well. Overall, this is a great hotel and their customer service is amazing.

The staff and location of this hotel is amazing … a hidden gem in the Windy City. I will be back.

What a GREAT historic spot! Very romantic, well appointed rooms. Very friendly and helpful staff. Gorgeous bar. Yummy Chinese restaurant. We'll definitely be back.

I stayed at the Whitehall for 2 nights for business reasons. The location of the hotel is good. The right size room. For the whole stay in the room I felt a heavy chlorine smell. Another thing that I do not accept is the outlet of the nearest current to charge the phone is from the opposite corner of the room… With the hope that in the morning I could hear her. Overall a good structure. I was there already and maybe I'll be back.

I loved staying here. The location was convenient, within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. We had a little bit of a rough start when arriving with the check in lady, but after that everything went so smoothly. Hotel is conveniently located across the street from the Surgery Center so if you’re having a procedure done by Dr. Haney please use this location. The short wheelchair ride back to your room makes all the difference. I usually have trouble sleeping in hotel beds but these beds were extremely comfortable. The doormen were so nice and helped with luggage checking in and out. The check out process was a lot easier and the lady that assisted me was nicer too. We’re definitely staying here again when we visit Chicago. The rooms don’t come equipped with refrigerators or microwaves but they are readily provided at your request. Ice is also provided as well. The incidentals are $75 per day so that was shocking and should’ve been mentioned up front when booking, so be mindful of that.

Good hotel. Got upgraded to a suite because the overbooked my room. Which was fine. Huge room, two bathrooms. Had water spots on the bay window and the ceiling — but good view and right across the street from the surgical center. Good location, nice staff.

I will admit it. I am not used to this type of hotel. Doormen, valet parking, tiny elevators. Not the sort of place I usually stay. However we needed a place that allowed dogs and this one had a good price and location. The people were helpful and understanding of our needs. The room was fairly large and they had tried to do tasteful modern updates. As I am from a more rural area I was concerned about noise levels from the street but it turned out to be not that bad.

We recently spent two nights at the Whitehall Hotel and just loved it. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The room was affordable and well appointed. Enjoyed dinner at Ditka's, which is less than a block away. Will try Mei's Corner the next time we visit. Thanks so much.

Beautiful hotel of the thirties, very good maintained. The room is very spacious, comfortable and decorated with very good taste.

I had great experience here; the front desk was efficient, the elevator smelled nice, the room key worked every time, loved my king bed, bathroom was elegant, room service was easy and immediate. The room was quiet as long as there's no loading truck delivering right below my window side. I walked to the Magnificent Mile. Oh, the Chinese restaurant had great food. For all of these the price was unbelievable affordable. I stayed for 3 nights.

I've stayed at the Whitehall from time to time over the years and stayed there last week. On the positive side, this hotel is in the perfect location at the north end of Michigan Avenue, a short walk to great shopping and restaurants. While it's an older hotel, it's not too big and impersonal. We got an excellent price that included valet parking, which was another price. While our stays are usually pleasant, this time our room had a problem with the heat and we were quite chilly most of the night (by the time we realized the heating system was in fact not going to provide any heat, it was nearly midnight and we did not want to ask about switching rooms). Second, upon check in, the hotel placed two holds on my credit card totaling over $150 that have not been released after nearly 7 days – even though my payment for the room was processed in full a few days ago. I think that holds that hotels place on credit cards should not last for more than 2-3 days after checkout when a full payment has been processed — — this is an inconvenience.

This is one of the nicest hotel in Chicago. My check in was good, no issues of any kind. And my check out was a lot better, because the lady at the front desk was so so nice to me. She even made some jokes that made me laugh so hard that I thought I would miss my hotel room. Also the room (oh my…) Almost Everything in the room was perfect and ready to go. Except the TV that I had to plug in myself. I will definitely come back!

We enjoyed our stay at the Whitehall-where we stayed for a quick overnight to Chicago. Check in and check out was quick, any staff we encouraged were courteous and friendly-offering service or assistance any time. We hung out in the lounge one evening, that was really cute with attentive service and good drinks with lots of options for types of seating. We happened to get a top floor room with a nice view through downtown which was fun. Room was clean and pretty, very cozy. We'd definitely go back!

Very nice Hotel in Chicago, good value for money, large room, clean.

Clean, but very small rooms. The internet was super slow. The shower was lukewarm at best broken as it continuously spins when trying to turn from cold to hot. On top of this when leaving they tried to charge us for missing mini bar items that were not used, it needs said that they did fix this, but just annoying that it was even an issue.

Very good location. And the staff very friendly. Spacious and very comfortable rooms. Highly recommended.

Excellent hotel at reasonable prices.

The service was great. We had problems with the hot water and the heating controls. The heating controls were extremely annoying considering we stayed during a very cold time. We set it too 75 and the heat wouldn't kick in until it dropped to 70 and would stay on until it hit 80. It was hard to stay comfortable at night. We were also not able to connect to the internet during our last night. I also didn't like how they left no room on the mini fridge for personal items. However I will say that the location is great. And again. Great employees. And good price. But you might be comfortable paying $10 more a night for a cozier place down the road.

This is the worst hotel I have ever been to. Not only was there food in our "just cleaned" bed but the valet left a eaten corn cob in our car with a trash bag. DO NOT stay here. I have never been treated with such disrespect after spending good money. Take your money elsewhere. This place is disgusting! It doesn't even deserve the mandatory one star.

I was meeting a guest from Germany who was staying in the hotel. We used the meeting room, and had breakfast. The staff in the reception area were very friendly and helpful. So we're the staff that parked our cars and packed the cars with all the samples. The waitress we had for breakfast could have been a little friendlier. All in all we had everything we needed and the staff we felt with were super professional. We will use the White Hall again for our guests.

I was not able to stay at this hotel due to scheduling mix ups and they were already booked but I still have to give them a 5 star for the customer service I experienced. At Mei's Corner, Sara was absolutely amazing host and genuinely cared as she made me feel better about my situation as I figured out a solution. The valet was also very courteous and waived parking for me instead of charging me for the few hours. I truly appreciate all the help I received.

Totally not what we thought this place would be when we looked at the pictures online! Our room was much smaller than you'd expect for $200 a night but this hotel is basically on the magnificent mile so they can charge more I suppose. Their service is good though and we didn't complain and demand another room like some others in our group. Also the elevators are very small and only allow 4-5 people at a time in them and there's only two. Possibly the worst part is the parking across the street is outrages at $40-$50 a day ouch!

Service was wonderful, so helpful and attentive. Room was perfect. The food was terrific as usual, we always stay here when in Chicago!

Never stay at this hotel! My husband became sick at the last minute and we could not stay at the hotel. We contacted the hotel and asked them if they could move our reservation out and initially they did not wish to help and then lied stating they would move our reservation and send confirmation… the confirmation never came and now they are acting as if they could not move our reservation at all with a late notice after they told us they would. Liars! To add insult to injury, we dealt with a number of different people who kept making us someone else's problem. The person who finally addressed our problem lied to us to get us off the phone… Poorest customer service of ANY hotel we have ever had the misfortune to deal with. Before booking here, I suggest you stay at any other hotel or motel before coming here. This hotel is simply an unaccomodating overpriced mess!

The location is great, near the north end of the miricle mile. It is easy to get to and easy to get around the city from. The staff are very nice. The rooms are clean though there are some things that could use an update, the shower curtain is heavy and gross which is an easy change for the hotel to do so I hope it gets done. And the carpets could stand to be switched out.

I took my lady to chicago for labor day weekend and The Whitehall Hotel was exactly was we were looking for. We knew they didn't have parking so decided to fly in instead and it was even cheaper than driving and parking all weekend. Staff was nice. It's not your typical chain hotel. This place has been around a while and it has great character. Their rates were far better than others on the same block. Divvy bikes were 2 blocks away on Washington Square and a Potash was on N State St with good affordable food while staying there. Would go here everytime I visit the city!

I would not rate this a 4 star hotel, I had no hot water, the limited power outlets also didn't work other than a single point near the bathroom. Good for the hoover. It seems in need of a little TLC but the staff are pleasant, rooms are ok and clean but definitely not 4 star.

Ideal location to stay in Chicago! It was minutes away from the John Hancock center and the heart of downtown. Staff was very friendly and the room was very cozy.

Nice location, not accommodating staff! We arrived and were told they couldn't accommodate our vehicle and gave us zero options. Already paid for the hotel room we had to figure out where to take our car, and walk blocks back to the hotel. Wouldn't go the extra mile with anything. My recommendation would be to spend a little extra to get a higher quality staff!

I was there to pick up a friend. The location is right beside the 360 Chicago attraction in a nice neighborhood away from the noise but still in the thick of downtown. My friend was very pleased about the rooms and service, and he has a preference for best-in-town kind of places.

Great location, Nice bed and easy checkout but place was a little run down. Asked for Shampoo and never got it. Had to get new remote. Has a lip in the bathroom that you have to be careful of because I hit it hard in middle of the night. It was very noise early in the morning. I had 7 am meetings and was awaken by a beeping garbage truck every day at around 5:30 am.

My girlfriend and I had a great stay at the Whitehall Hotel. Tracee at the front desk was extremely nice and helpful. Our upgraded hotel room was amazing and had more than enough room. Two bathrooms and showers! Great view and comfortable bed. After our experience at the Hilton in Chicago, this was a refreshing change. The location is really nice too. Still in the city, but far enough away to all the chaos. Most things are within walking distance. I would definitely stay here again. The only thing negative was the lack of drinking fountains in the building. Plenty of chargeable water bottles in the fridge. That's to be expected at a hotel though. Edit: One of the valet drivers was really cool and helpful. I can't remember his name but he gave great advice for food and helped us with parking. Everyone working at this hotel is very nice.

Had a pleasant stay at the Whitehall. Had a large and comfortable room, but had a slightly odd smell about it (bit musty perhaps, the carpets and some decor needs replacing). Friendly desk and door staff. Nice breakfast at the in-house Italian restaurant. Great location. -1 star for the stupid mini-bar policy which meant that every time I wanted a drink I had to phone the front desk to unlock the fridge door for me (which only worked half the time so I ended up just going thirsty). Bit of a shame and ruined our stay a little. Plus the hotel obviously missed out on revenue because of it. My requested ice didn't ever show up either. Would only stay here again if they change this.

I stayed on the 19th floor with a gorgeous view of the city. The room was beautiful and you could tell that a good amount of money and time are spent making the appearance live up to the hotel's historic label. Sadly, Chicago drivers use their horns for turn signals. So no amount of sound proofing will save you from the never ending horn blasts throughout the night. Also there are only shear curtains on the window providing a minimum of privacy but letting in an obnoxious level of light through to ensure you have a hard time sleeping. The elevators are just large enough for two people and a cary-on bag. I realize that there is not much the hotel can do about that since it's a historic building but it does make for a very uncomfortable elevator ride if someone gets on at another floor. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even offered to print directions to a local restaurant and bring it to my room. The valet was the most kind and thoughtful person of them all. While waiting for my car we had a nice chat about the city history. All in all, it was a pleasant stay in a beautiful room with excellent staff. Be prepared for noise and cramped spaces. Also be prepared for substantial holds on your credit card for incidentals. It comes off but for a 2 night stay, I had a $500 hold on my card before I even got the bill.

We spent three nights at the hotel. Great location for walking to everything on Michigan Ave and such. Service was great from both the front desk and bellhop. Rooms were a good size for price and had updated amenities.

This was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The service was horrible, the rooms were dated and they have nothing special to offer. There are a hundred hotels in Chicago that offer better service, amenities and in same area. I totally regret booking this place and hope my review saves you from making the same mistake we made. It is obvious to me they pay for reputation management as these good reviews are obviously not from people that actually stayed here!

Very nice hotel in a bustling part of the city. Rooms are spacious and the customer services are very pleasant. The one drawback was that the elevator was down for maintenance so the wait time was longer because only one was working and they are tiny.

Decent boutique hotel but renovation/repair are not guest friendly. Rooms are nice but need attention to detail such as broken trim and other issues. Bathrooms are smaller than most Porta-pottys.

We got to the Whitehall around 6:30PM on Friday night, to find one of the automatic doors to enter was not working correctly. Next up: one of the elevators (of only 2 tiny elevators) was broken down. Everything had a luster of the past, but needed updating, cleaning, replacing, etc. In our room, the carpet was stained and one of our sheets had a hole in it. To add insult to injury, of the 2 phones in the bedroom, one didn't work at all, and the other only worked if you pressed 0. (ie, none of the corresponding keys to concierge etc worked). The shower faucet where you adjust the temperature was also broken — as it was loose and hard to finagle into getting a temperature that didn't scald or freeze you. And maybe the worst of all? We had gone out for brunch on Saturday, and come back, said we didn't want to be disturbed, but then, while we were napping, someone CAME INTO OUR ROOM without knocking to check our minibar! What?! Who does this!?!? This hotel is 2 star-worthy, not 4. They need to SERIOUSLY up their game or deal with reality. Also — we were charged for 2 items (a granola bar and candy bar) that we didn't even take. The lady said "sometimes touching something in the minibar triggers these prices). I said "that would make sense if either thing were even *in* the minibar! " So, there you go. That's the truth of the place. Judge for yourself.

Good location close to transit and shipping. Our room had a great view of the John Hancock Building. Room was nice. Biggest complaint is that the free Wi-Fi is only 1mbps, and to upgrade is fairly expensive for the marginal speed increase.

Cute place and convenient location. However a bit outdated. Not many power outlets.

Our stay has been great. Just off Mighigan Ave so close by to the shopping. The people have been great and super helpful here. The room is small but doesn't matter since who comes to Chicago and stays in their room the whole time anyway. We are just here to sleep and get ready for dinner. The hotel definitely is historic and if you love staying in historic hotels for the feel they give then I recommend again.

Great Location! Room was nice but a bit small. Parking can be a bit confusing as in every city. Amenities were good but not great. Overall would stay again.

Stay here last month, with the girlfriend for 7 nights. Hotel lovely and clean, not a sound during the day or night time, breakfast was massive every morning, excellent staff. Bedroom nice and tidy, one or two things wrong nothing big tho bit of dust above the bed and the shower head was very low down. (just being picking) Fresh towels every day even when not ask for. Hotel was just off magnificent mile super location, couldnt ask for a better location. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anybody who is travelling to Chicago. Super price also for the week we stayed.

The Whitehall was very elegant and the staff was very courteous. But the bed had a huge dip in the center. Not a very comfortable sleep. The location is perfect for a big time shopper, but if you're going for the city attractions (shedd aquarium, navy pier) you'd be better off staying somewhere else for that price.

I stayed for 3 new nights and I purchased it as a Hotwire Hot Deals and I would agree with other reviews that this hotel should be rated a good 3.5 stars and not a 4. The room was clean, quiet and updated. Location is fantastic with only one building separating it from the John Hancock, the Miracle Mile and a few late night bars and restaurants. The staff were all friendly and very helpful. Other reviewers complained about a small lobby which is true because the hotel has a small footprint and most of the ground floor has been turned into 2 restaurants but that wasn't an issue since I don't spend my time hanging out in the lobby. What I didn't like was that the showers still had shower curtains, some mold or something on the grout and the AC didn't cool at first, I did notify the front desk and it was fixed within the hour. I'd stay again if the price was right.

This is NOT a 4 star hotel! Maybe it was a 4 star hotel 15 years ago? The wall paper in my room was peeling off and there were water marks on the ceiling. The windows are not sound proof and mine opened (odd being on such a high floor). Everyone take note there is a fire station nearby. We could hear them very well from our non-sound proof windows! The bathroom was very out dated. I’m tall and the shower head hit me in the chest. The elevator is small so during busy times you may have to wait. If you are going any time soon (July 2015) call and check 1st. While I was there they were chiseling bricks off the side of the building for updating. This was not disclosed to us prior to booking! So much for sleeping in past 9am! For just a little more money you can stay at the 4 Seasons across the street.

Staying at this hotel you feel like you go back in time to the 1930s which was awesome. Overall service was great and the staff were very professional and courteous. Rooms were decent but could use a little "modernization" (finding an outlet next to the bed was not easy). I had to move some furniture.

Stayed 2 nights January 5-7. Staff were all very nice and accommodating. They lose a star from me for the condition of the bathroom (some mold in tub, vents dirty). Other than that the room was very comfortable.

Danny at the Front Desk is the man. I booked through Hotwire, and it took a while for them to fax the reservation to the hotel. While we were waiting, Danny was helpful, funny, and easy to talk to. He hooked us up with an absolutely amazing room with great views, a comfortable bed and tons of space. All the staff are professional and personal. If you're in the area, stay at Whitehall Hotel. Between location, service and value, I'm not sure you can beat it. And if you see Danny, you're in luck.

My husband and I stayed one night and really enjoyed the hotel. It was old, yes, but the room we had was very comfortable and quiet. I want to have this bed in my home, most wonderful bed ever! The staff were very friendly. We felt our room was very warm, cozy and welcoming. The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do while in Chicago. We would definitely stay here again.

Very small lobby, not much to the hotel. Outdated old room (I was terribly disappointed). Half the staff were really friendly and nice. The other half, not so much (they weren't rude, just not very nice). Won't go back. It feels like a fancy motel. Not a 4 star hotel. I wont stray from the Hilton again.

Located across the street from the Water Place, this is a beautiful hotel in the heart of downtown Chicago. I would like to call it "Chicago's best kept secret". This hotel is older but I has been updated. The bathrooms are beautiful. The beds are very comfortable with a contemporary headboard, 42" flat screen t. V. And the focal point of the room were the draperies. The staff was very courteous and most helpful. You cannot beat the price for this location.

Overalla The Whitehall Hotel is a gem in the heart of Chicago's Magnificent Mile district. The hotel features two great restaurants. It has a beautifully refurbrished 1920's style lounge that shows off this hotels grandeur from its early days. The hotels business centre is a useful tool to those who are travelling from out of country as you can print your airline boarding passes free of charge. The hotel is also Wi-Fi equipped throughout. The rooms are on the small side, I recommend spending the extra money and getting the larger room. The elevators are really dated, they definitely could use an upgrade at some point. This boutique hotel has superb customer service, the bell staff and doormen are top of the line — you definitely get five star service from those guys! One downside is that towels and toiletries are not replenished on a daily basis, I had to telephone the front desk and request to have some brought up on more than one occasion. If you are travelling to Chicago, or highly suggest considering The Whitehall Hotel.
