The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and did everything in their power to make sure my stay was as lovely as possibly. The rooms were great and modern. The location could be considered less than desirable, but there are wonderful restaurants within walking distance. The only downside was the relatively expensive price in comparison to other hotels of seemingly similar quality.

Very kind personnel. Rooms are tidy and neat, but the bathroom is a bit smaller than expected. Big, roomy walk in wardrobe, not sure why. Complementary coffee and tea refilled daily, which is good. Wifi is kinda slow. They give you coupons for breakfast at the hotel. Pretty neat, all said and done.

Stayed here for 2 nights in May 2018. Staff are lovely and friendly. The location was really well suited for access to all areas of San Francisco. Close to the trams and taxi's are easily hailed. Only let down was the rooms and elevators are quite dated, but for the price I would happily recommend it.

We had a great stay here at the Hotel Carlton. Very clean rooms and hotel, outside of area is a clean area compared to most places around the price. They upgraded our room and sent a bottle of wine to our room for our honeymoon. The restraunt below was amazing. Make sure you stop in and have a beer or wine with their "from scratch" food. I am giving 4 stars because their was no AC units, even in the upgraded room. We are from a colder climate so it would have been nice to have during the day. Personally could not stay here during the summer. Also no mini fridge. We like to eat our dinner leftovers for lunch the next day. A way to save a few $$. Could not do so.

For the price this is a really good hotel. The rooms are large and clean and the staff really helpful. There are a couple of downsides though: •our room was near the lift, which is quite noisy. •we could very clearly hear the family in the next room. Thankfully they weren't up unusual hours but the walls are definitely pretty thin. •the area just south of the hotel is *very* sketchy. That being said, this was about $30 per night cheaper than the next comparable hotel.

Absolutely superb. Clean. Courteous service. Lovely decorated. Very comfortable beds and great neighborhood. Watch out, valet parking is like $40 a night or something and there really isn't any street parking. Lots of wonderful restaurants nearby. I am in San Francisco a few a year and will absolutely check if they have space first. The cost is about 1/3 what you would expect from such a lovely place.

This hotel was everything I wanted it to be and more. They have live music in the lobby along with wine in the evenings. The rooms were small, but very nice and quiet. The employees are what made the big difference between here and any other hotel, especially Theo! He was friendly, thoughtful and did that without losing his personality!

There’s plenty to love about this charming hotel like Theo at the front desk, wine and musicians in the evenings, eclectic furnishings, and filtered water machine in hallway BUT it’s lacking in some of the hotel basics like mini fridge, the bathroom is tiny, and the main reason for 3 stars — THE NOISE. You hear literally everything in the hallways and neighboring rooms. Slamming doors and conversations into the early hours and starting again not too long after for the early risers. The noise is reason enough for me to find other SF hotels for future visits. I’d recommend you do the same if you’re reading this.

The Hotel Carlton is my goto choice when I stay in SF. It is reliable, comfortable, affordable, in a fine location, while being a little quirky. Your likely to be entertained by the staff, with Theo as a standout for his humor, positivity and consistently good restaurant recommendations. Meanwhile the nightly wine and music in the lobby is fun. What's bad about free wine and free live local music? Overall this is always my first choice of hotel when I'm in town. Highly recommend.

Way. Noisy: We hear conversations in the next room and passages in the hallway. Tiny bathroom. And not very well placed.

Really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The staff is wonderful and they are all very friendly and quite humorous. The rooms are comfortable as well are the beds. The hotel is in a great spot for walking around SF. If you carry water around like we do they have places to fill your water bottle on every floor.

My wife and I absolutely love this place. The Front Desk concierge are absolutely awesome. We have been repeat customers this last stay for 4 days but prior to that we have stayed 6 other times. Beds are so comfy and the rooms are perfect for 2 adults unless you get the room with 2 beds. Overall I would recommend it to everyone. Wine and music @5pm.

A nice hotel, inside clean and tidy. The rooms have a coffee machine with coffee and tea. Nearby on Polk Street you can choose where to eat.
Given that I like to walk, I liked the location — 30-40 minutes you can walk to interesting places, to the sea.

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Out of my weeklong travels throughout the area, this hotel had the friendliest staff. They were knowledgeable and helpful, as well. It is an old building but they have done a good job of updating it with some great features that make it feel more modern and comfortable. There are some things that could be fine tuned with maintenance but it certainly was not an unpleasant stay for us. One thing that could help a lot would be curved shower rods to add a little more elbow room in the shower. Great decor, fabulous wine, a comfortable bed, clean surroundings. I was happy. Thanks!

Really nice hotel with extremely helpful staff. The front desk were great getting tickets sorted and maps etc. The bar has some nice beers and again the staff were great, knowledgeable about the food and wine etc. Rooms were well appointed and a nice size. Location is not too far from Union Square, about a 10 walk so all round a cracking choice.

Loved staying here! Staff were friendly and very helpful about sightseeing and getting around the city. It was in a great location and close to shopping and sightseeing. Complimentary wine hour was accompanied by live music and a great chance to interact with fellow hotel guests. The room was clean and spacious however the bathroom was on the smaller side. Our room and a coffee machine and tea bags and mugs which was wonderful. Particularly loved the addition of a water jug and cold water dispenser in the corridor! We arrived well before check in time and they were more than happy to store our bags at no extra cost. Highly recommended and would stay again when visiting San Francisco :)

Great hotel with character! Reception staff were always friendly and helpful. Beds were comfortable and the shower was good. Location was central to everything we needed. Would definitely stay here again.

Ask for everything. Double room= 2 full size bed. There isn't air conditioning, but you can ask for a box fan free of charge. There wasn't a fridge, but you can ask for one free of charge. We picked up pizza and forgot to grab plates at the take out restaurant but we randomly asked and they had some down stairs. The rooms are pretty small. There of us are sharing a double and its hard to walk around with luggage taking up any free floor space. There is a decent size close, but its a funky shape so just put the third persons luggage in there. Tiny bathroom reminds me of a first apartment but it works. Bright, clean, shower shampoo and stuff mounted to the wall. They have a zillion rooms in this place. They are pretty much dorm size plus the tiny bathroom. They have a single serve keurig in the room for coffee.

I loved this hotel. Beautiful in the common areas and well decorated in the rooms. You can't hear the street noise. The area is full of homeless but at no time have I felt violent. There's respect. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Undisputed visit to the hotel restaurant. You have to try the crab Chowder. Buenisimo. Live music every day in the reception area with free wine for the guests. Very good value for money for this city so expensive.

Booked same day cuz it was pet friendly — and turns out it's super all around friendly — — professional hospitable staff, impeccably clean, excellent mattresses — my son and I occupied a double and both beds were queen sized — what a pleasant surprise. Oh, and the sub-$200/night rate — pet included was likewise competitive and great value for such an ideal location. Highly recommended — thanks for the enjoyable experience.

Nice if basic hotel, perhaps not in the best location but very friendly and helpful staff with a great attitude. Great base to explore from and reasonable rates, just need to walk a few blocks to more shops/restaurants/things to do. Would recommend.

Nice hotel. Rooms are on the small side but clean. The walls between the rooms are thin so you can hear anything going on in the other rooms (i. E. Lighter clicks, pipe drops, bongs bubbling). Lively neighborhood.

Nice hotel, the staff is very helpful and friendly. They have nice tips of activities. There is also live music in the lobby and a free glass of wine in the late afternoon which was nice. The restaurant is very good, breakfast as well, much better than I had expected at first. Rooms are neat. We had at the moment no car so I'm not aware of parking issues but I don't think that should be a problem. The hotel is situated in a good neighbourhood (you can't say this about all neighbourhoods in SF! ) and is on a walkable distance (10-15min walk) of Union Square. If you don't want to walk Ubers wil take you there for 5-10$ tops. I would come back!

Friendly and helpful staff. Clean rooms and sufficient basic needs. Also a nice restaurant with good breakfast menu. Major downsides are the limited parking, which is inherent to San Fransisco, and the minimal sound proofing. The place is extremely noisy. The elevator is a constant noise and conversations in the neighboring room are clearly audible. Every door on your floor opening and closing is a disturbance. We had a couple of partying guests which was a pain, but the staff eventually responded properly.

Clean, beautiful hotel in a great location. Rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. They also offer free wine every day from 5:30-6pm and they even have a great small Cafe inside for breakfast, although not included. Would highly recommend!

Holy smokes no AC unit in room. Kinda strange sweatin my buns off at night. I WAS PROVIDED another fan so in put near the window at night and that seems to do the trick nicely. Everything is awesome about this hotel. Great staff. Clean rooms. Great location. WALLS ARE TAD THIN and there is no ac in rooms. But other than that great hotel!

Good value for money for the standards (hexoses) of San Francisco. Well appointed rooms. Windows and vintage doors with their consequences or sound nothing (they feel very well the street noises).

Deco Old School but elegant. Clean Really nice welcome. Joe listens in addition to being multilingual. A note of humour in +. Good location, a bit higher next to the Aces is a Shop where you can buy a pass equipped (bus)

Given the prices to the stars of the hotels in San Francisco The Carlton is a great budget option, with neat and clean rooms in an area of the quiet neighborhood with shops in the immediate vicinity.

With a family of 4 this was a pretty crap hotel sorry for the language but if was, I think the only nice thing about the hotel was the people at the reception ok let's gets started, so first of all the hotel l looks really dirty good knows how the hell people can rate this hotel more than 3stars! The lobby was really small not expected my breakfast was half decent our room was literaly in front of the elevator which was convenient but extremely annoying at the same time, our room was so small! Our beds were reasonably comfy, we never had a shower because of how dirty the shower was, luckily we only stayed here for 3 nights, the toilet was small : (and thank heaven we had a TV! Wi-Fi was so crap : (again I apologise for the foul language but it's true, hardly any space for us to put our clothes luckily we only stayed here for 3 nights! At night you could literally here everyone talking through the walls we must have heard atleast 4 rooms worth of people talking on our first night at 10 PM! Including 1 couple swearing at each other then people coming up in the elevator with babies screaming! Air-conditioning and lighting was working fine on our second night at about 8:00PM the lobby was full of people! And such loud music in such a small lobby! So we literally just shoved everyoher out of our way over all I hate this hotel I wouldn't recommend you stay here for any longer than 3 nights!

The staff are wonderfully friendly and welcoming. Rooms are clean and shabby — chic with a vaguely Bohemian/Middle Eastern/world traveler vibe. When we stayed here a year or so ago, we had a lovely corner suite with a sitting room with the "most uncomfortable fold out bed in the history of beds" and an absolutely beautiful separate bedroom with a king size bed. This time we are in a much more spartan and plebian room with two double beds. Sadly, we also overlook the street and even five floors up at 2.30 am it's incredibly noisy. The bathroom is extremely cramped. There is a long, deep walk in closet with a light and full length mirror that could double as a dressing room. If you stay here, be sure to ask for a room away from the street so that you aren't up writing reviews at 3 am. Other things to note are that the in house restaurant, Saha, is fabulous and offers "Yemeni fusion" food — Middle Eastern and Mediterranean with a few familiar comfort food items. The wine hour from 5 to 6 pm in the lobby is great. They often have live music and it's always fun chatting with other guests. One other caveat — we booked it thinking that it was near Union Square, and it's not far, but you have to go through the Tenderloin to get there. I would say it's actually closer to the Civic Center, but it's not far, definitely within walking distance.

I had a great experience at this Hotel! friendly staff and very cute room. Loved the colors and large walk in closet. You can keep all suitcases and lots of things inside thus leaving your room feeling big and comfortable. It felt like a home away from home. I requested a small fridge to keep snacks in. I loved the round tub. Would only suggest more plush matrices it was to to springy feeling for me. The walls are a bit thin it being an older building. I was in a king bedroom with city views 6th floor. You would not have all the charm in a newer hotel. I liked it fit the rest of the cities style and charm. Room was very clean. I would suggest asking for a room maybe not with guests next to you if possible if you are a light sleeper or use ap on your phn with soothing sounds to sleep. I did and slept great!

Room is clean, staff is friendly, I forgot my charger, so they charged my phone :) location is good and Starbucks is nearby. I easily walked to Union square and Chinatown, then visited Coit Tower and Pier 39. I would stay there next time!

It's an okay hotel for one night. There is no parking within the hotel, and pubic parking could come up pricy. There is no control of the A/C and heater, you w'd either freeze or sweat. This hotel doesn't have a kitchenette, which I got disappointed. I found a dirty towel on the floor behind the bathroom door, perhaps their cleaning habits are not the best?. In addition to mention, the staff is very friendly. The hotel however is on a conveniently located area in downtown SF; that there is no vehicle needed, since public transportation is available at all hours. I personally, would not book for more than a day though.

Great little hotel. Checking in was absolutely painless and the deposit wasn't insane ($50). The staff is extremely friendly and have gone above and beyond whenever we needed something. My only issue is that the walls are paper thin (at least between us and the next room) so one night when we were watching TV we got a friendly call from the front desk telling us to knock it off. Keurig machines and French roast coffee come standard, as well. Not a coffee drinker myself but it is a nice gesture. There's also no fridge or microwave in the rooms so if you bring your own food, beware. Overall, would recommend.

Got in several hours early, but the front desk staff went out of there way to make us smile and be comfort while we waited for our room. The room was clean, beds were comfortable, and other than a bit of noise due to the streets of San Francisco, it was a perfect stay.

Not your typical hotel. The interior design is quite unique. It was comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. The price and location were both good.

Great value for money. Very reasonable rates compared with other San Fran hotels. The staff were attentive and friendly. We asked to change rooms because the first was extremely noisy (loud neighbours, thin walls…) and were immediately given a second room that was fine. We had a lovely view without even booking a city-view room. A particularly nice touch was the complimentary wine in the lobby, social mingling, with classical music played by young musicians. The location was perfect, a walk away from bars, restaurants, shops, central San Francisco.

My room is a bit small. I still haven't been able to find the main room light switch. The gap between the floor and the door to the room is so big, someone could easily slide a phone or a camera on a selfie stick under it. Not good. Lastly, there isn't any air conditioning? It's too hot in the room. Which I assume is why there is a ceiling fan but really? On the plus side, they have free wine after 5 I think?

It is a very clean hotel and has excellent amenities, with a restaurant first and very good breakfast, and the Internet is free and works very quickly!

The rooms are spacious, this conveniently located, but the bathroom is more old… does not kill… the truth is that there are hotels that we've been that are better. Oh and it is difficult to find someone that speaks Spanish.!.!
