Beautiful place but I've never had a smooth stay in this hotel. Our first stay there was 2 fire alarms that dropped steel doors trapping us in our area with lack of communication. This past valentine's weekend we gave it another try, our first room the toilet was shooting water when you flushed it, then we moved to the room next door which had no ac just a fan. $65 valentine's dinner wasn't bad but cold after the move. The area turns into a mini skid row after 8pm which isn't the hotels falt but we were woken up more then once to a lady screaming like she was being murdered and crying in the homeless encampment/park.

The bed is super comfy and liked is very very good hotel.

Very helpful if you have a problem. Employees are very nice and friendly.

The Citizen Hotel is my favorite place to stay when I am in Sacramento. It is walking distance from the Capitol and all of the other amenities that I enjoy when I am in Sacramento. The staff are extraordinarily friendly and accommodating. I feel like a movie star when I am there. I love the old historical building. It can be crowded at times when there’s a lot going on in Sacramento but many times I feel as if I have the hotel to myself even when there are other guests. With my Marriott Bonvoy it helps me earn points which can upgrade to additional great experiences at the Citizen. I also truly enjoy their downstairs restaurant, the Grange, one of the best farm-to-fork restaurants in Sacramento.

Very nice boutique-style hotel. Rooms aren't massive but big enough and very nice, nice washrooms with good shower. Hotel is not in the nicest area, lots of homeless people around, but hotel and hotel staff are quality. The Grange is the restaurant in the hotel and was well recommended by locals outside the hotel, but a bit on the pricey side. Oh and this is a Marriott property in case you're with their loyalty program.

Not large rooms, but very nicely designed and clean. Staff is excellent from front desk, to restaurant, to room service staff. Decor and style is unique! Lovely stay at a good price!

The Citizen Hotel by Marriott is beautifully decorated to the 30's time period. Fine detail in the hotel. If one can overlook the smaller rooms, this is the hotel to stay while in Sacramento. Right in the heart of downtown. Many restaurants and bars to entertain adults. The service at the front desk was pleasing. They are very courteous and professional. A great way to start a stay after a long drive.

Although very old, it is very well taken care of. Beautiful designs of the rooms, hallways and reception area. Rooms are clean, staff is very polite and restaurant downstairs (although pricey) serves tasty food. To mention some of the negative things, the smaller rooms are very small. Also, this hotel is located in downtown – you will hear traffic, people talking and maybe a party going on outside in the middle of the night. It was still worth it to stay here – good memories.

Hotel is very nice, but a bit old (clearly). Our bathroom taps were off center and the shower flooded. Luckily we didn't need to take a long shower. The staff is very curteous and we really enjoyed our stay. The surrounding area is really shifty but walking distance to amazing meals. Would stay here again!

We were at the bar for drinks before heading to dinner else where. The drinks were great but the service was seriously lacking. It took 20min for 2 cocktails and two beers to show up. Then it took asking twice and an additional 30 min to pay our check. I will be going back to give it another try as I have had very good experiences at the restaurant before so hopefully we can just chalk this one up to a bad day and I will edit my review to reflect that on my next return.

The room I stayed in was small. The hotel is full of character, which is fun, but at that price tag, I was expecting to get a whole lot more bang for my buck. For about that price, your can stay at the Marquis at Times Square and have your mind blown. Really nice staff though, so that was nice.

Breakfast menu very nice. Atmosphere extremely relaxing yet upscale. Staff courteous and friendly. Front door staff as well courteous and friendly.

It's nice but I'd like the Internet to be included, nobody wants to type in information just to login. This is also the first hotel with a business center that requires swiping a credit card. It was suppose to be a relaxing night but I couldn't do basic hotel amenities.

Amazing space and a solid hotel. All the usual amenities, though the shower was strictly a shower not a tub hybrid if that matters. Bed was magically soft and the view was stellar. Would absolutely love to go back if the opportunity presents itself.

Wonderful staff. A grand old hotel with a political nonpartisan theme… Perfect for these crazy times as some of the quotes were from the greatest leaders and minds of our age. Everything worked fine and had comfortable bed linens & pillows… All good stuff even a nice coffee maker however our Keurig only had one French roast regular coffee the rest was decaf. And I'm a coffee nut. Haha but the concierge and the door men are the best… And pointed us to Temple Coffee Roast…ers phenomenal pastries and the best coffee. Next trip to Sacramento we will stay at the Citizen again. Rooms are small but that's typical of restored old and cozy hotels. PS… the staff goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and special.

Nice rooms, nice staff. A bit swanky, but you're not treated any different in your shorts and t-shirt. I'd recommend for your stay while in Sacramento.

Arrived on a Monday night. When we pulled up, valet greeted us and made arrangements for our car. When we got our room the first night, I was a little disappointed. The room was small but had a very beautiful view! We asked for an upgrade and were switched to a different room the next day. All the staff we spoke with were very pleasant and answered any questions we had. The valet gentlemen would open the doors any time someone went in or out. The only thing I had to complain about it the dirty floors in the hallways. I really need to thank the concierge guy there, he was our favorite! Even addressed us by name.

Great option in downtown Sacramento. Location is near the Capitol. Pros: Service is top notch. Comfortable beds. King size pillows on the King size bed. Rooms are nice with good amenities. Decent gym that is open 24/7. Restaurant downstairs is very good with a fantastic happy hour. Cons: Valet parking is the only option.

My visit to the Citizen Hotel was for lunch at their restaurant, The Grange. It was delicious, and the service was perfect! I had the burger and fries, which I could have easily split with my daughter, who managed to polish off a Cubano with homemade potato chips. My granddaughter had the chicken tenders and fries. I had a bite of the chicken and wished they had them on the grown-up menu. Prices are a tad high for lunch, but given the quality and service, they prices were in line with other downtown Sacramento establishments.

On 4/23/18 & 4/24/18 I checked in for the Women's Business Owner conference, the team there were very social and amiable. The conference was set up on the 7th floor and it was very beautiful with breakfast buffet and beverages. In 2015 my friend got married here as well, it was very organized and the staff was personable. We stayed in the top suite and our photographers were able to capture beautiful photographs of us on the rooftop overlooking Downtown Sacramento. The valet team made sure to open the door for all guests and visitors. The bar is very nice and bartenders also do a great job getting your drinks and checking in on you. The staff has such a smooth operation that you don't feel pressure, whenever I stop by to attend the events or meet up with friends, it's almost like I'm at home. I'd highly recommend this place to social, for weddings and conferences.

The amenities are mostly standard, but the atmosphere is top notch. Where it counts, they Excel with large warm showers, comfy bed and pillows, and excellent HVAC. You will be comfortable here at minimum. Political quotes and cartoons accent the walls, which are mostly white and green pinstripes. It has a retro look without being corny. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful hotel! From the friendliness of the staff, the clean rooms and eclectic atmosphere this place is top notch! The motif is extremely beautiful and interesting in a great way! And they have the fastest elevators around! I couldn't have been more pleased with my two day stay… AMAZING!

Unique boutique experience. Nice being able to gather with local family in the attached restaurant/bar. Valet attentive, quick. Staff friendly. Heat/cooling worked great. Quiet with window/room darkening drapes shut. Could open window a bit for fresh air & enjoy “city sounds”. Pet friendly. Walked short distance to Mass Sunday — beautiful Cathedral to visit.

One of my favorites. This is a classic older hotel, tons of character and charm, a great restaurant and fitness center and a beautiful staircase the runs through the center of the entire building. Its close to the Capitol and is located in a great part of Sacramento with lots of fun places to eat and drink!

My brother and sister in law got married here. The actually wedding event was good. The people involved with that did a nice job. It was the same night as the Paul McCartney concert so there was plenty of outside noise and helicopters during the dinner at night but that isn't The Citizen's fault. What is The Citizen's fault is there atrocious service for rooms. My mom (mother of the bride as well) arrived at 3pm when her room was supposed to be ready. The wedding was at 530pm. They did not have her room ready until after 9pm. Meaning the mother of the bride had to get dressed in a public restroom at first until someone from out party realized the situation and let her use their room. When we complained the night staff tried to give some concessions. They gave us some freebies as if that was supposed to make up for it. The managerial staff at night and in the morning has no idea what customer service is. The general manager was not even available we were told. We felt the hotel should have had the class to deeply discount my mothers bill, if not waive it under the circumstances. They were reluctant to accept fault for their abysmal service at first and then only in the end did they concede when I had to resort to raising my voice in the lobby. This is by far the worst hotel experience I have ever had, anywhere, ever, period bar none. I haven't even commented on how small and noisy the room were. What a dreadful hell hole this place is.

I was here for a wedding (as party of the wedding party) recently. Though I didn't stay in a room as a guest, the experience I did have as one of the purple slightly behind the scenes was quite positive. The hotel staff was quite courteous and handled everything that we threw at them (that I know of) quickly and easily. The event room was a good size with a decent view of the city — the only caveat was that the afternoon sun comes in through the windows at a harsh angle, so many of the curtains had to be drawn, blocking the view. Overall, it was one of the best handled indoor weddings I've been to.

Old building with small rooms. I was told there was parking on site when I made the reservations, but there wasn’t. It was important to access to the car during the stay but couldn’t happen because the car was at another location. Its not acceptable to lie to guests in order to secure reservations. Sneaky. To make things words, we found a smashed cockroach in a coffee mug. See picture attached. While an old building and decor can be justified as ‘antique’ or “retro”, finding smashed cockroaches as a result of poor cleaning and lack of pest control is seriously disappointing.

Attended an all-day meeting at the hotel. The food was wonderful and the high point of the day. Lol the furnishings and decor were very nice. The bar was nice with a great view if the street. I'd like to go back.

This hotel is nice, matching what the AC @ Marriott is shooting for. I was happy with the early check in, matched room preferences, and food on site. Luckily I was on the 12th floor, I can't imagine the noise for any of the lower floors. The doors all slam very loud and you can hear the elevators running for just about anywhere. The bed in my room needed to be replaced, its not supposed to fold in the middle. All in all this place was good, not great.

Very nice spot close to the Capitol with beautiful views of the area. There staff were helpful and always with a smile. I never touched the front door handle entering it leaving. The fitness center is small, but the free access to a local club is nice.

Wonderful staff, super helpful and courteous. Decor is unique and worthy of an Autograph Collection. Clean rooms with cozy layout. The Graft restaurant in the lobby is amazing. Would highly recommend breakfast there.

Very nice service from the time we got there to the time we left. We got to stay on the 13th floor and it had a beautiful view of downtown Sacramento. Loved the restaurant attached to the hotel. We were able to have some drinks and snacks before heading out for the night.

The hotel is beautiful. We were married here. Our most recent visit was for our 5 year anniversary. Rooms are clean and we'll kept. The location is great. We walked everywhere. Staff is friendly and effecient, always willing to give suggestions.

I really enjoyed staying here. The encyclopedias lining the walls of the lobby were really cool. Rooms were nice and we'll updated for being an older hotel. The location is not so great though, the park across the street has a lot of homeless people, so if you have children maybe keep that in mind, but this isn't something the hotel can control so 5 stars none the less.

Pros Check-In Agent was very friendly and professional. Got a call as soon as our room ready which allowed us to roam about. Room: Cozy room. Cons: Ceiling light in room was not working. Could not fix it as ballast was out. Rooms need to be checked by housekeeping for functioning lights. Restaurant: Would love to see better vegetarian options in the restaurant (no points dinged for this, just feedback)

Best customer service I've ever had. Turned a disappointing initial situation into a great experience. Pull up a chair, here's the story: I arrived at the The Citizen at 10:30pm, ready to hit the sack. Go to check-in for a two-night stay, I'm told, "Sorry, we overbooked, we can't take you until tomorrow. " I can't quite comprehend at first, in my exhausted state. What? But I'm tired. After being extremely apologetic, the clerk informed me that they had booked me a room at a hotel down the street (a competitor) at their expense, and that my room will be ready tomorrow. What could I do? Getting all hot and bothered over this isn't going to get me a room in a place where none are available.
When I come back the next day to finally check-in, I am cordially greeted by the staff and in an effort to make good on putting me out the night before, I have been given a beautiful suite on the top floor at the same rate as a regular room, and they would be happy to cover a meal for me at the Grange. The room was awesome, great view from the balcony, and very inviting. To top it off, after I get back to my room in the evening, I find a bucket of beer and a dessert tray waiting for me with letters of apology from the managers.
I'm a simple man of few wants, but for me, the management and staff at The Citizen went above and beyond in making good on an initially bad situation. I am very much looking forward to staying there on my next visit to Sacramento!

The Citizen is a beautiful boutique hotel. We visited the attached restaurant the Grange. The bartender, Sam, came to our table and customized drinks for us. The Chef, Jason, came to check on us and made sure we enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere, drinks and meal were delicious, advice and beyond our expectations.

I went to the restaurant and bar after a concert. The drinks were delicious and they had a great wine list. We also got some appetizers and they were shareable portions for a snack.

We booked a suite and was expecting above average service. The room was nice but small for a suite. It felt like a regular room. There wasn't any above and beyond fabulous extra amenities in the room. Our bed duvet had a fake duvet cover (2 flat sheets in between the comforter). Tthey didn't have any extra pillows and blankets for the pull out bed and we had to ask for some. We ordered in room dining for dinner for the kids and it wasn't kid friendly. We ordered the kids butter pasta which was horrible. It had absolutely no taste-no salt. The kids didn't even eat this simple dish. The chicken nuggets were huge pieces of battered chicken. The batter was so hard we had to take it off so the kids to could the white chicken breast. They gave us apple juice in a
Glass cup and water in a glass cup as well which was not suitable for kids who drop things all the time. And we didn't have a rolling table to eat on so the kids had to eat on the floor. They only gave us a tray. I guess they expected you to eat on the writing table wd a swivel chair. The staff was nice but the hotel itself needs to live up to its star rating. I could pay the same amount at the Ritz and get way better experience than the Citizens. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for those expecting a wow hotel experience.

I attended a social luncheon at the Citizen Hotel. The lobby was beautiful, our lunch was delicious, the service was fantastic. This hotel is very beautiful. I was very impressed with my experience.

The location was in the city, not too far away from old Sac. The rooms were very small, but they looked like nice enough. The wedding was on the 7th floor. During the ceremony I didn't think too much about it, but once they opened up the draping for the reception, it was so beautiful. The lobby was absolutely awesome and the staff were very friendly. The bartenders made good drinks too. I enjoyed it.

Coffee maker, safe, mini fridge. Beds are nice, old school sac politico feel. Good size shower. Lounge had great service. Close to a Starbucks and a few eats. Old school iPhone, iPod dock. $350 for a room was a little steep but that is California nowadays.

Great little hotel in the heart of Sacramento. Really enjoyed the bar for happy hour, and the beds were comfortable. Nice bath amenities. Only real negative is the elevators are quite loud and being in I woke up once because of noisy people in the hallway and the elevator beeping. Still a fun place and pretty good value.

Nice place but direspectful. We had reservations. Arrived 2 hours after check-in time, to be told that their VIP guests (which obviously we were not) would be having a late check-out so we were unable to check in. A special week-end for us, with reservations for dinner, caused us to not be able to make our reservations. Our weekend started in a real negative feeling. Once settled in, we found the room very small but elegant. The bath was large with modern yet age appropriate decor. It was lovely. Very hard bed. The bar was inviting. I wish we had been treated as VIPs.
