Nice boutique hotel. Minimalist room design, but works quite well. Near the tourist attractions.

Cute, clean and comfy rooms. Small but functional. A little noisy, but I was able to sleep through it no problem. Staff is super nice.

Cute hotel in a good location. The rooms are a bit small but clean. The staff is very welcoming. Only downside is the price a bit high but on the other hand it's Long Beach!

The hotel is clean and in a great location. The staff is very helpful and professional. The rooms are indeed quite small (and the shower is a little claustrophobic), but if that doesn't bother you then it's a bargain. I would definitely stay there again if I was headed to Long Beach.

The service is great, the room is clean and updated however very small. If you don't mind paying $180 for a closet with everything within waliking distance… have at it.

Cool hotel with excellent service. Very convenient to the Long Beach convention center and tons of bars and restaurants. The rooms are tiny but that's part of the charm.

The room is really small but oh my gosh it's so cute and it's clean there's no elevator and we're on the second floor but it's so cute, having no elevator is okay with us cuz we're into fitness. We're about six blocks from the convention center so that's convenient. In some circles it would be considered a European Hotel.

The Varden is a nice boutique hotel, not one of those monolith hotels we are used to. The rooms are small, yes small. My childhood bedroom was bigger, which was small. They makeup with the small rooms and bathrooms, with great friendly service… want a slightly earlier checking time… no worries. Want a slightly later checkout time. No worries. Want some water bottles (for free) no problem. Everyone is super friendly and cordial. The continental breakfast was light but good, with milk/oj/muffins/cereal/oatmeal/fruit etc. I would stay again for the service. But wouldn't mind at least a queen size bed.

I travel a lot and stayed at many hotels. This is one of the nicest hotels I have stayed. Very stylish, Clean, with a very polite and helpful staff. Highly recommended.

I've stayed here multiple times over the last three years because it's just a consistently good experience. The renovated rooms have character (in a good way), and they're always clean and well maintained. The staff is super friendly, the location is convenient, and the perks (breakfast, wine tasting) are icing on the cake. For the location and the price, I always check here first. I do recommend paying the extra for a higher floor if you like a quieter room, as you can hear your upstairs neighbor walking around otherwise.

Wonderful staff and very good upkeep of the facility. This is a great place to stay on a quick business trip. Just a warning, the room is small (not quite NYC small) and the showers are standing only. The complimentary wine around dinner time is pretty amazing, especially after 15 hours of flights and such.

Very friendly staff and convenient location close to restaurants, bars, and shopping. Room is good for couples only if they don't use the bathroom. Where else can you go and enjoy a shower with the window open? Yes, the cool morning breeze felt great.

Friendly staff, tiny but clean modern designed rooms. Noisy due to thin walls and inconsiderate guests. You will not sleep well. Better to get a second floor room.

Rooms are far too small. No room for two people with luggage. Sit on your bed and brush your teeth in the sink? Rooms this size at this price are not acceptable in a city like Long Beach. This isn’t Rome or Paris.

Incredibly friendly people. Like most botique hotels, smaller but very comfortable rooms. Dig the breakfast and evening wine hour.

We had such a wonderful experience at the Varden! Our room was exceptionally clean and the perfect size for 1-2 travelers. Every member of the hotel staff was so incredibly friendly and helpful! We would definitely stay at the Varden again!

Interesting hotel. Definitely not a cookie cutter hotel experience. Recently updated with a euro modern feel, the rooms are compact but not too small. Overall a nice place if you prefer something a little different. But, … the shower curtain was annoying; it constricted​ the shower too much and was hard to slide. The sink was impeded by the shelf above it making it difficult to spit into.

Funky boutique hotel. When I visit cities I like to spend my time out and about not sitting in my room. This place is a cool tiny hotel with tiny rooms. It offers a comfy places to sleep and shower (no baths in the room) and is super close to everything. We used bike share and bus to get around and also walked a lot. The outlet mall, beach and convention center were easy to get to. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, yoga studios all minutes away. Shares a parking lot with a bakery that has yummy fresh donuts. Laundromat less than a block away.

Small rooms but a cool boutique design and friendly staff. Only things lacking are more easily accessible electrical outlets and there's no mini fridge.

The rooms make very efficient use of space… That is to say they're very small. That being said, the rooms are well appointed except for the tiny showers and the staff is very friendly.

Unique euro-style hotel that focuses on customer service. Great knowledgeable staff and owners who don't mind mingling with guests. I will stay there again if the opportunity presents it self.

Why are they charging so much for these little rooms. I was disappointed, the bathroom doesn't have a real door. Yes the bed was comfortable but little. It's ok if you want to pay too much for very little.

Great historic property, nice renovation. Very spartan and minimalistic, don't expect luxury fittings.

I LOVE this place. Amazing. Fabulous. Awesome. So nice you won't want to sight see. And a bargain. And the hosts are lovely. I didn't want to leave. It may be the only reason I ever go back.

Retro hotel with modern facilities and intimacy. Spent a night here before boarding for a cruise and the staff was most friendly advising on neigbourhood amenity. Intimate hotel which is a nice break from the modern monoliths plus offers free internet and continental breakfast. Convenience, clean and value.

We have stayed here twice. Staff is fantastic. Highly recommend. Just understand what this small and delightful hotel has to offer. This is a wonderfully renovated old hotel and the rooms are small. Do not criticize it for being what it is. Close to downtown and quiet. Don't miss the historical neon sign at night — "Dolly Varden Hotel", "Bath In Every Room". Just fun!

I will absolutley stay at the Varden again. Everything about our stay exceded my expectations! The staff genuinely care about the guests and I can say its by far the best customer service Ive ever had! On top of that the room was awsome! Melissa gave us some history of the hotel and its cool that they built the rooms around the original 1920's layout. Its quite charming yet still ultra modern. I couldnt believe the 5 star quality we got at such an affordable price! I could go on and on about the Varden and its staff but see for yourself. You really wont be disappointed.

Rooms are basic but nice, could use a painting on the wall, service is good.

I stayed at The Varden for a conference in Long Beach and had a great time. The rooms are very well decorated, spot clean and with a comfortable bed. The hotel is also conveniently located close to DT and very quiet. But the best part of the experience was the staff of the hotel. Everyone I interacted with was extremely nice and helpful and did everything they could to accommodate. I would definitely stay at The Varden again if I am back in the area.

I stayed at the Varden Hotel while visiting some friends in Long Beach. I was very surprised at the level of customer service offered by a small hotel. The front desk staff was extremely courteous and provided great dinner recommendations. As a bonus, all guests enjoy free internet and wine tasting. If you are going to Long Beach, and are looking for a great but affordable hotel, stay at the Varden. It's close to all Long Beach attractions.

I had a hotel malfunction at the Long Beach Hilton during a week of conventions and the only reasonable room rate found was at the Varden. As the alternative was a $ 300+ room at the Hyatt (which I stayed at before and did not like) I decided to give the Varden a try, especially as it was described as a "european-style boutique hotel" so as a European I wanted to test it first hand. The Varden is a nice unique place. First and foremost it is absolutely clean, which is not a given today even at high-priced hotels. It is modern, again something you do not find everywhere these days. And it is kind of unique. Size-wise it reminds me a bit of the Incheon Airport Transit Hotel at the Seoul airport, just with a bit more flair. The room I am in is small, if you have need for a larger size desk to work on you're out of luck, there is only a small workspace area that fits a notebook size computer and not a lot more. But you can work very comfortably on the bed (that is where I am typing this review as we speak). So if you want to stay for a few days and do not plan to spend a lot of time in your room anyway, this hotel is highly recommended. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I came in early in the morning, and dropped off my luggage as I had to run to a convention — when I came back in the evening my room was ready and my luggage was upstairs waiting for me. Again, the bed is extremely comfortable.

We recently stayed at the Varden hotel and had a wonderful experience. Yes, the rooms are smaller but extremely well done. Also, the staff is excellent. Charles, recommended a side trip to LA on the train to a book store he heard about and the adventure was very enjoyable. He also tooked care of our Southwest online check in while we were out. The hotel is within walking distance to everything we wanted (took a cruise from the harbor so used the Long Beach passport bus) plus lots of places to eat and drink. We'll stay here again.
